The contrast here is lovely - you've said a lot about Jim/Pam and Pam/Roy without having to run on with it. And it's just very well written.

This is lovely and sad and hopeful. Great job with the comparison. Oh, and that last line is so appropriate for the scene AND their life right now. Really lovely work here.

Lovely, lovely story.  Well not lovely because of the beating-up...but still great.  I loved Jim's last line...that could apply to many many things.

Author's Response:

Hahaha...thank you!  I guess anything having to do with getting beaten up can never be lovely, but I'm so glad that you liked this!

Wow, how did I miss this? I love how you used the memory of Roy to frame this...the juxtaposition between the his level of emotional honesty with Pam set against Jim's - even now, even inspite of his efforts to detach/hide from her. So poignant. And I really love the multiple meanings in Jim's final Yeah. It hurts...without looking away. Awesome.

Author's Response: Oh, thank you!  I'm so glad that you liked this.  I guess after Cocktails I found myself comparing Roy's reaction to what Pam said to Jim's reaction to when he thought Karen was being serious about being with all of those guys.  Even though the circumstances were different, it made me think about how opposite Jim and Roy are with expressing their emotions.  Thanks so much for your review!

This is lovely.  I love the parallel between Roy's inability and Jim's ability to admit when something hurts -- that's a great way to show just one way that they're different, one way that makes a huge difference in their "rightness" for Pam.  And Jim, oh Jim, hiding his face so she couldn't see where Roy had hit him, and not blaming Pam at all, and just... Jim.  Yes, yes, yes.

My favorite line:  It's the kind that's not full of things unsaid, but full of questions with half-answers and almost-truths.  It feels like progress, maybe, from where they used to be.

Gorgeous job!  This is fabulous.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much!  ♥  I don't know why, but that difference between Jim and Roy has always stuck out to me.  I know it's supposed to, but for some reason it's so much more significant than the "Jim is so funny" thing.  It's obvious he's sensitive and like to talk about things, even though he does tend to hide.

I'm so glad you liked this, and thanks again!

Both of these scenes are so lovely and real-I felt like I was sitting there watching both of these moments unfold in front of me.  As others have commented, the parallel was perfect and the last line so full of meaning.  I also loved the way you wrote Pam's thoughts in both sections--it was so true to her character on the show, which is so tough to do.

Author's Response: Thank you!  I am so glad that you think that this was true to Pam, and that the parallel between Jim and Roy was realistic!

I love the parallel between the two stories, especially how Jim can be open with Pam while Roy can.  It really encapsulates the contrast between both relationships.

Author's Response: Thanks so much!  Roy is such the big baby type who holds everything in, even though he comes across as way stronger than Jim.  But I don't think Jim's afraid to admit to Pam that everything hurts.  Thanks again!

Oh, that was just lovely. It had a nice sort of quiet simplicity to it. The last line is just perfect. And I love the parallel/contrast with the opening Roy/Pam scene.

Author's Response: Thank you, it is so nice to hear that you think it had a quiet simplicity!  I know that I love those types of stories and it's so flattering that you think mine was like that too!

Ouch! This hurt my heart a little.  I can't deal with the thought of Roy pounding on Jim. Very well written, I like the comparison of Roy/Jim and how they deal with feelings/anger/hurt.

Author's Response: Oh, I don't muck like the idea of Jim getting hit in the face, either.  Let's hope it doesn't really happen that way.  Thanks so much!

This was wonderful, especially: He exhales.  "Yeah. It hurts."

Author's Response: Oh, thank you!  I'm glad you liked that part because I wasn't sure if it was too abrupt, or whatever, but I'm really glad it works!

Yeah -- it does hurt.  A LOT.  And it will keep hurting until Pam does tell him everything.  Nicely done, 69CON.

Ahhhh LOVE.  This was so great, you did such a fantastic job showing the contrast between Roy and Jim!  I love the tenderness mixed with a desire to feel that Pam has -- she wants Roy to feel, but he doesn't -- he won't take down those walls, but Jim -- he's just Jim, he's that open book and yes, it hurts, and that's just -- so double-sided, that phrase.  Very nice job.

Author's Response: Wow, I'm so glad that what I had intended to show actually did come across because I was beyond worried that it wouldn't.  I appreciate the review!  Thanks!

So good:  "There's quietness between them now, and there always has been, but it's a different kind of quiet. It's the kind that's not full of things unsaid, but full of questions with half-answers and almost-truths. It feels like progress, maybe, from where they used to be."

Your writing style is really lyrical and this struck me a very beautiful and very true.  Thanks I needed this pick me up today!

Gorgeous contrast. Jim's pain has always been plainly on his face; finally it had to bruise, didn't it?

Author's Response: Thank you so, so much!  I totally agree that we've had to see Jim in pain before, and not that kind of pain, but it's been coming.  And now maybe Pam sees it for the first time.  I really appreciate your review!

Oooohhh, angsty!Jim.  I like him.  "Yeah.  It hurts."  I like how "Yeah." is a sentence all in it's own.  Great story.
