I don't think this chapter was excessively sentimental. It felt real and heavy with the need to let your partner know just how much you love them, how much you need them. I really enjoyed the imagery of young Jim reading letters from his dad. The first time I read a love letter from my dad to my mom, it was so intense and I realized that they had this whole life before I was born... they had inside jokes and nicknames and a level of intimacy that I couldn't even begin to fathom until I was much, much older. Beautiful chapter (and beautiful song! God Bless Joni Mitchell.)!!

Author's Response:

Seriously, who knows heartfelt, soulful love affairs better than Joni Mitchell, lol?

Your take is precisely what I hoped would come through re: Jim finding his parents love letters - I always imagined him growing up with parents who truly loved each other, and the impact that had on him, on how deeply he's able to love Pam. So happy you could relate to it so well too, heartcarved.

What a heart-swelling (and heart-breaking) contrast between Jim showering with the two women. I really enjoyed the way you wrote this -- that it was somewhat of an invasion when Karen did it, but Pam is invited, welcome to every part of Jim. Lovely.

Author's Response: Exactly...I think his sense of borders with Pam would be completely different, because of how much he loves her. I'm glad that was clear in the writing. Thanks so much again, heartcarved, for being such a perceptive reader and kind reviewer!.

I love the intimate romance of Pam watching Jim sleep. I love that they can finally touch and hold hands and not everything has to be careful and controlled. :)

Author's Response: There's something so intimate about them sleeping together (just sleeping, lol) isn't there? And I wrote the line about them walking down the street holding hands BEFORE Fun Run, so you can imagine how happy I was to see that actually happen. Who knew? And I agree - they'd be so relieved simply to be able to touch. Thanks again, heartcarved!

How did I miss this story???

It was complicated. All this not touching. It could be so distracting that he’d miss the entire gist of whatever was being said. He didn’t care.

Oh, that makes my heart beat faster. There is nothing more appealing to me than pre-Casino Night Jim... because it's so desperate and haunting and full of want. But also now that they're together and her hand on his thigh under the table...  Ugh. I love it. Off to read more!

Author's Response: Wow, thanks heartcarved! Tell you a secret - the first two sentences you quoted are my faves in this chapter. And I know exactly what you mean about pre-CN Jim...so soulful. What's not to love about him, lol?

These were just beautiful little nuggets of Life, Colette, thank you for writing them!

Author's Response: 'Little nuggets of life' - what a perfect description for what I intend these scenes to be! Thank you so much, McGigi - so happy you enjoyed.

That was a lovely ending. I just discovered this story today, but I read all the chapters and fell in love with it. I thought the final chapter was a beautiful way to end it.

Author's Response: Well, I'm glad you found this and especially glad you liked the final scene. Thanks, nandance!

Fantastic job.  Sad to see it end but anxiously awaiting your next work of art : )

Author's Response: Thank you so much. Much appreciated, NanReg!

Aw, it's ending?  Well, I read this one a few times, and liked it more every time.  Jim's memories = tugged heartstrings.  I love the imagery here:

"Her neck, highlighted in dim pinkish lamplight, a glint like a flickering star at her ear as her head falls back.  Jim, Jim, Jim, Jim dissolving into a moan, a vibration he feels deep in her throat when he drops his face there in the final swell of it."

And the "were you expecting someone else" line made me laugh out loud. And the "morbid" one.  Ok, so I liked it. :)

Author's Response: Ha! I'll admit - I liked the 'you were expecting...' line myself. And especially pleased you cited the 'Her neck..' passage, cause I kind of struggled with that one. Thanks so much for the kind comments, thirtypercent!

this story has been kickass. thanks so much for writing it. I'm going to go finish swooning now.

Author's Response: No, thank YOU so much for saying that! Glad you liked it and proud to have induced a swoon ;-)

I like how I always want to read your snippets several times in a row - because I they really put me in the moment.  Very nice, colette.  But that's no surprise to me. :-)

Author's Response: Aw, Mox..these little scenes putting you in the moment is about the best compliment of all. (Cause that's really all they are, is little moments, lol.) Thanks, as ever, for the generous review.

So many favorite lines... guh.

He knows exactly where he is. She’s a place.
She's his home.  Yeah.  Sweetness.

Love her response to the diamond earrings.  I have a pair and ever since HooHusband gave them to me, I may as well throw out my jewelry box.  Well, all the other earrings anyway.  So lovely to hear Pam with the same sentiment.

I hope that if you are finishing this story, it clears the decks for something else.

Author's Response: Something new? Never know...and I agree, he's pretty much content wherever she is. Glad you liked the diamond stud thing too...just seemed right to me. Thanks, as always, Lisa for being the best audience a girl could have ;-)

Well of course I had to reread the whole thing.  These are just so wonderful and poignant to read, and even more special since we know they're together, so it's not just our wishful thinking.  Simple moments of being in love = Jim and Pam.

Author's Response: Yay! So honored you re-read these. And yes, knowing these types of scenarios aren't pie-in-the-sky is a relief. Thanks so much for being such a great reader/reviewer, EH!

this series is away adorable, but this is probably my favorite one. there's something really magical about caretaking, and your writing was so evocative here, i can see sick little jimmy halpert in a semi-pathetic state being tended to by his loving gf... and it's just adorable.

Author's Response: Was afraid I might be enjoying Jim feeling sick just a little too much...glad to hear I'm not alone. He is kind of endearing like that, isn't he, lol? Thanks so much Emily - pleased that the writing works for you, cause I've really been enjoying your stories as well.

You say, little scene about nothing like it's a bad thing!  Your nothing is always something.  That was just a lovely moment, and Pam's comment's "Jim, is that you?" made me laugh because  I can relate to that kind of sleepy confusion.  Very sweet.

Author's Response: Have to admit, Pam's incoherence at 3 am, might have been a bit of a projection on my part as well. And no, nothing isn't necessarily a bad thing...I just feel like I should warn anyone expecting, oh say...a plot, lol. So pleased you enjoyed - thanks, MA!!

Colette, my dear you need to work a little bit harder making something beautifully sweet, a little bit steamy and overall lovely.

j/k of course.   You continue to amaze.  Don't let that stop you.

Author's Response:

Hee! I'll try, I'll try...

Thanks as always, you...oh, and especially for pointing out the 'lobe dichotomy' - just the kind of thing that drives me nuts, lol.

How did I not see this story before?  I'm going to go back and re-read all of these but I wanted to leave a review first.

Love these!  I love these little glimpses into their life together, and I imagine their life to be exactly how you've laid it out here.  Quiet, simple, little moments.  When I think about what their relationship would probably be like (you know, what we don't see on the show) I pretty much picture it EXACTLY like this.  Brilliant.  Nicely done :)

Author's Response: Why, thanks, kells8995! Once in a blue moon, I write an actual plot for these two, but mostly I tend to think of them in terms of these small, connected moments. Glad to hear that works for you too!

this is such a lovely thread. i really liked this one, though - there is something so old school romantic about jim writing love letters to pam. it's one of my favourite things that we writers force him to do :)

Author's Response: So pleased you're enjoying these. You know, I'd read lots of fics where they email or IM each other, but I couldn't remember one where he writes her an old fashioned, in his own handwriting, love letter. Somebody had to make it happen, lol. Thanks Emily!

Oooo cozy Jam. In sickness and in health, that's our Jim and Pam. I love the fact that he retains his teasing sense of humor even when he's sick ("What am I, an animal?"). You make these little vignettes so cozy, Colette. I love them all.

Author's Response: Cozy. I like that. Really, all these scenes are meant to do is capture a simple, relatable (is that a word?) moment...so, yeah, cozy ;-) Thanks NEJ.

Aww.  I like the idea of Pam wanting to take care of Jim -- plus, I have a weakness for the image of her pushing his hair off his forehead.  :)

I also really like Dwight's cootie line.

Author's Response: I kind of like that image too. And, ah yes, the wisdom of Dwight....Thanks so much, thirtypercent!

I ADORE that. Even germ infested - they're adorable! You know, I think this might be the first time I've read anything where Pam was the one being the caretaker...I really, really liked it. I actually think I got a lump in my throat over it at one point. So, so, so sweet and romantic in a cootie kind of way. :-) LOVE IT

Author's Response: There's just something about her taking care of him that gives me a lump in my throat too. Jim has that combo of being adult-sexy and poignantly boyish that just begs for a little TLC. Not to mention some hot cooties. Glad this came across as romantic - who doesn't love the flu, after all, lol? Thanks LoveFool - as the master of small moments, your praise always means a lot.

Sign me up for Jim cooties!  Vicks has never had it so good:)  Great slice of life and the voices were spot on, as always.  Oh, and thanks for the lovely clavicle image.

Author's Response: Jim cooties...I bet he could bottle and sell those things, lol. Thanks much re: the voices (that means a lot) and for reading, reviewing and sharing in the clavicle love, bitterpill! (I think I need a 12-step program to quit writing these slices o'life. Somebody stop me.)

COLETTE!!! Oh man, this warmed my little nurse's heart! Loved it so much... and makes me regret my career decision just a little less... hehe..

Thank you for being all the things you choose to be!!

Author's Response: Didn't know you were a nurse...glad you could relate to this! (Do many of your patients resemble Jim? ;-) And thank you for being such a wonderful reader/reviewer, StarShine!

I've read this four times now, Colette.  Never has the flu sounded so romantic and sweet.  How did you do that?  I love that very first image of her pulling his shirt off with his arms in the air.

"Maybe she'll do anything he wants."  Yeah, she will.  Lovely.

Author's Response: Tickled that you said that, cause that image was the seed of this one. I needed to purge it from my head, lol. Thanks a lot, Sweetpea (fellow vignette-writing-addict!)
