Author's Response: OK, I've been hiding my head in the sand long enough. I've been reviewing other stories, so it's not like people think I dropped dead and have an excuse for not posting. I'm working on the next THREE chapters. Unfortunately, I'm working them in reverse order. Three is done, two is in the works, one is still sorta muddled ideas in my mind. WHICH is why I haven't posted. Really struggling with the upcoming Ted-Jim chapter.
I'm snowed in again today and will hopefully finish "two." When I finish "one", I'll post all three in short order. I'll probably try to space them 5 - 7 days apart, on the theory that the time will give me a chance to write "four" and "five" without this horrifying, embarrassing lag between chapters. That will probably get us close to "the end."
I want to thank you for taking the time to leave a review. These nudges that let me know there really are, unbelievably, people out there actually WAITING for the next chapter are pretty much the only thing that's keeping me writing.

I found this story months ago, with only like 15 chapters in it, but it was absolutely amazing. I reread it a few times after that but then took a break from obsessive Office fan fiction reading. I got bored the other day, came back on and remembered this fic. I found almost twice the amount of chapters I'd read before and just an even more awesome story than I'd remembered. I like need another chapter, this story is just plain amazing.

So, uh... Yeah, I think it's time for an update. How's about a 5 or 12 chapter update? Not being pushy or anything, but if you'd like a visual as to how I'm feeling... First of all, I just want to commend you on writing such a fabulous, intriguing, and realistic story. At first, I was a little wary of this story because of the title, but I was just reminded that you can never judge a book by its cover.
This chapter particularly got to me, and I'm not really sure why. It may have been because of how Jim's insecurities were shown through his tears, or maybe it's because I have something going on in my life that rang familiar with this chapter. In any event, it had me crying....that's how good the writing was. I'm so glad you are still updating this story because I always check back! Thanks so much!
Author's Response: Wow, I somehow missed this. Thank you very much for taking the time to leave such a lovely review! I'm glad the story in ringing true for you. I finished my first draft of the LAST chapter tonight. (I keep writing out of order.) I hope to update by the end of February with the next chapter (which will be Jim and his dad) and then hopefully the rest will follow quickly, since I've outlined it and written a bit of the remaining chapters already.

Oh man...read this on my phone tonite. It was worth every second of squinting! Lol. I have really missed this story. It occured to me that I found it for the first time the night the stupid virus first started happening. I hope the next time we're graced with a chapter of this story that is all over. This was a great addition to the story. Can't wait to see what happens next.

Thanks, KH. I was feeling a bit neurotic about the lack of reviews. I like things when I post 'em but then, if there's very little feedback, I start to second-guess myself and think, "Well, maybe not enough happened." or that I've bored the pants off everyone, readers are finally losing interest ... my mind goes through all kinds of scenarios, none of them any fun.
The story won't end as soon as Pam and Jim talk. I've got a few more chapters in me.

So I had been avoiding this story thus far because: 1. I'm usually not crazy about early season AU stories about Jim & Pam getting together because they tend to feel a bit too implausible to me, 2. Stories with 30+ chapters are daunting and scary, and 3. I'm a healthcare professional and I get too distracted by stories with a poorly-written and inaccurate medical plotline. (Wow, I sound like a total fanfic snob, don't I? I promise I'm not really).
But all that being said, I was bored this weekend and disappointed in the lack of new fics, so I caved and decided to see what all the fuss was about with this fic. And I'm so glad I did because I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE it. The medical details are extremely well thought out and essentially impeccable, the writing is fantastic (especially when it comes to the dialogue), and the plot is captivating and very believable in my opinion. I read the whole thing in one night because I just couldn't stop. My only regret is that I didn't hold out longer and wait until the story was finished, because now I'm dying to read the next chapter! So keep up the great work! :)

Well, just wow! Thanks a LOT for taking the time to leave this review. I'm SO glad to hear that you think I'm getting the medical details right. That is something that drives me batty about some stories, too. I have to stop reading if the plot developments become totally implausible. I've worked hard to keep the medical stuff realistic, so I always appreciate hearing that it's working.
And you made my night with the compliment on the dialogue in the story! I've read a lot of stories on MTT where the dialogue is spot on and I've thought, "Mine will never be that good." So I'm psyched to hear that the dialogue is a selling point of the story for you.
I hope to hear from you on the next chapter ... when Ted gets extubated! You can let me know if you think I get the next one right. (I do have a respiratory therapist giving advice, filling in the details that I've forgotten. So I'm hopeful that it'll come across as believable.)

First-time reviewer...what to say? Well, I'm enjoying the ride. Glad to see Jim finally have it out with Karen, because I think that issue needed to have some sort of resolution before anything significant could happen, Jam-wise. I also appreciate the fact that you didn't portray Karen as some crazy person. While I'm a PB&J guy all the way, I emphasized with Karen too. She was a pretty likable person, but people tended to dislike her because she was a sort of roadblock between the pairing everyone wanted to see. Glad to see that you stayed true to her character, and didn't make her out to be some villain.
Anyhow, sorry I haven't reviewed before now. But I'll certainly be reading the rest of this story, and will try and review as well. Good luck, and keep up the good work!

VB, this was like an oasis in the desert.
You had me near tears with the goings-on at the hospital. I'm feeling bad for everybody. Pam's thoughts of her dad really kill me. You know I'm always happy when walker man makes an appearance. That was a nice bright spot. The phone log at the beginning--nice touch. I'm so relieved that Jim's mom is herself again. On the edge of my seat, as always, my friend, waiting for the next chap.

The site is still coming up as an attack site for me, but that doesn't keep me from checking for a new chapter nearly everyday! The suspense is killing me...I want them to get together so badly, but I know that when they do the story will be over and I will have nothing to look forward to, at least until you start another epic story. I was so excited when I saw a new chapter to this story! And, I'm so glad the Karen drama is over. Your writing is so realistic - I almost forgot this was an alternate universe and kind of wish it had really happened this way. i read it earlier in october and recently i was actually admitted to hospital with just a collapsed lung, and i actually used some of the stuff that Pam suggested to Jim about hospitals! like asking questions, collecting cards, etc
