You know, I am a confirmed fan of fluff, and in such a dark story it feels like they've really earned the happy ending of epilogue A... and yet epilogue B seems weightier somehow. I'm glad you posted them both.

I've read this a few times now and it always gets to me. I like ending 1 better than 2, not just because it's JAMier, but because I think it actually is more continuous with the rest of the story. The whole story is a really excellent grappling with the issues it presents. Good work.

Haunting, in a word. You are a true writer. Glad that I read the sad ending before the happy one!

Author's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to review, and for your kind words. This was my first dip into fanfic writing, way back when, and it's fun to know someone is still interested in reading. I'm delighted you enjoyed it.

OK, I read this ending first, because the title made it clear that THIS was the sad ending. And I 1) love Jim and Pam and only want their future to be happy and 2) just spent the last few hours reading this story through and who wants it to end sad for real? It was "fun" to read it though, just for the angstiness of it (maybe not a real word, but it could be!).

Loved the phone message Jim left, loved that he died in the hospital for medical reasons (not car accident or suicide), loved that you set it up in earlier chapters; Doctor changed antibotic because first one wasn't working, he needed the nose oxygen. (is that called something like a cannala? I've never seen the word written, so I don't know how to spell it, sorry.)

I'm glad Pam found love and married (sort of, come on, I'm and Jim and Pam fan, any other significant other is just wrong). LOVED the gun in the jello. That was really brilliant.

Great alternate ending, but thanks for giving us the happy ending too.

Author's Response: I just found your review while I was poking through some of my old stuff. Thank you so much for your comments - they made my day a lot brighter. I love getting reviews on older stuff and I really appreciate this one. Yeah, Jim and Pam belong together, but I felt compelled to write a "sad but still hopeful" ending in contrast, hoping that would make us all appreciate that it turned out okay, and stay with the theme that life is fragile and what ultimately happens is often determined by small twists of fate. Thanks again, madmen fanatic, and welcome!!

I stayed up late to read this, such a raw and moving story, even had tears in my eyes. Beautifully written, thank you.

Author's Response: Thank you so much Cleo2010 for taking the time to review. It warms the cockles of my heart know there are still folks out there who like this one. It's probably the story I'm most attached to here and I'm glad it "got to you." Thanks again.

ugh, beautiful. i've spent a whole day reading depressing fics, and i targeted this one because it was "dark," and i'm so glad it had a happy ending. thanks for writing this!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, yanana, for giving this a read and for your comments. I'm glad I didn't leave you depressed. (if you change your mind, you can read the part B ending...lol)

This story just made me bawl! I'm personally choosing Epilogue A, but I do love Epilogue B as well, even though it made me cry! ;) Great story!

Author's Response: I'm very glad the story made you cry. *grin* It's that kind of story so if you didn't feel something I wasn't doing my job right. Seriously, thanks so much for reading both endings and giving me the feedback. It makes my little heart glow that folks are still bothering to review this. Much appreciated, jslasb!

That....was...amazing. I haven't found a Jim/Pam story that made me cry in a long time. It was just so beautiful and so sad. I lost it from the moment Emily appeared to the end of the story with the documentary footage. Oh man. Now on to read your other ending, which I saved for last because you said it would be happier! Lol. Great work!

Author's Response: I can't tell you how great it is to get still get comments on this story - thank so much for reviewing. I'm glad you enjoyed it and yeah, I'm glad you were moved enough to cry. I hope you liked the "real" ending and it made you feel better after this one. *grin* Thanks Sammie.

I have a feeling you are going to kill him lol :(

Author's Response: Hannah_Halpert, I'm going to reply to all your comments up to this point in one response, if that's okay. First, it totally made my day to see you're enjoying this one. It's the story I worked the hardest on, and got into the most. I hope you had to go out and didn't just stop reading...you have a choice of endings, you know. Just a hint - it's totally safe to read Epilogue A (So Lucky). Thanks so very much for all the reviews, each and every one was appreciated. And please let me know if you finished it.

So after reading your other story "Somebody" I decided to see what other works you had posted, and found myself getting sucked into this and holy crap. This was just so great.. so emotional and lovely and dark but yet so realistic. I'm so glad I read ending B before A and was really tickled by the presence of Emily in both endings, what an awesome touch.. and Jim's "That girl saved me." just.. guh. SO GOOD. I'm immediately favoriting this and hope you know how wonderful all of it was. Truly. :)

Author's Response: oobadnama, thanks so very much for your comments. It's really fun getting reviews "after the fact" and I'm delighted that you liked it. This story was very difficult for me to write (I got too caught up in it) and it makes me all warm and fuzzy that you liked it. Maybe I should have made the happy ending, ending B...rnrnI really appreciate your taking the time to review.

Goodness gracious I am bawling my eyes out. This entire story was fantastic and so emotional...geez.

I loved the first ending and after reading the second ending, I don't know which I'd choose. However, after reading the second ending I'm glad the first one is there to cheer me up a bit :)

Fantastic job.

Author's Response: Wow, thanks so much JelloStapler. It's fun to keep getting reviews after the piece has been out there awhile. rnrnDon't take this wrong, but I'm glad the story made you cry. It means I've done okay. *grin* Thanks for reading both endings, too. In the end, I have to think the first ending is the real one, but the second one wouldn't go away in my head so I wrote it, too.rnrnThanks again for reading and reviewing, much appreciated.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for reading, and especially for comparing. I hope the series lasts long enough for us to see Jim with kids, because I think he'd be great with them.rnrnMuch appreciated!

After reading "Someone to Watch Over Me", I had to find more jazzfan! Read the whole thing tonight and was spellbound! You really hit severe depression on the head. The dusty, not-unpacked-yet apartment was just too real... Both endings were wonderful in their own ways-- full of love and, oddly, hope. I look forward to reading whatever you come up with! Thanks.

Author's Response: Wow, thanks so much tellsomebodyit, and thanks for trying both endings as well. This was my first attempt at writing here. I started this before I'd seen the season 4 Money episode where Jim reveals his "not sleeping, not eating" to Dwight, so I felt somewhat vindicated that I wasn't totally off in my reading of Jim's despair. (I'm a "new" office fan)rnrnThank you so much for your comments, made my day. *smile*rnrnThanks

I'm pretty sure I know why this took you so long.  I'm a f*cking mess, lady.  I should have read this before part A.  Guh.  I'm blowing my nose and hiccuping.  This was beautiful.  Write me something else happy.  Now.  5-4-3-2-1, do it. Now ; )

Author's Response: This was an ending I felt compelled to write. There are just so many "what if's" in life, and I thought this was one of Pam's.rnrnThanks, and I'm glad it got to you. Writing it sure got to me. I just wish I could have supplied the proper soundtrack, because this song is so beautifully bittersweet and sad.rnrnOnward to happy.

Jazzfan, this picture of married life that you've painted is lovely.  It makes my heart happy AND I actually own this song--didn't have to look it up--so win-win-win!  It played in my head as a soundtrack.  I was pleasantly suprised that Emily made a reappearance.  Very nice.  Great job.  On to ending B...

Author's Response: Hiya NanReg, I'm glad you liked it, I needed to go wild with the happy after the last 11 chapters. rnrn(Great song, isn't it? My favorite version is actually the Chet Baker version but it's not available on youtube anymore. Apparently the heirs to the Baker recordings cracked down on youtube and everybody had to remove everything. It's a shame.)rnrnAnyway, thanks for the review and may they live happily ever after. rn

This story has been haunting me since the first chapter in August. After your ’Confidence’ post yesterday I went back and re-read this story. Thanks for finally posting the endings. Loved both of them. Beautiful and tear-jerkers, each in their own way. I was really ready for a good cry in ending B, but finding out that Jim dies of something other than the result of heartbreak and their misunderstandings, helped ‘ease the pain’ of the situation.

The voice mail. Beautiful. I always imagined that you’d have Jim scribbling his final words of love while hanging onto life on a ventilator. Pam witnessing his last moments. Ripping our hearts to shreds with the sorrow of the situation. Sigh. These lyrics--oh my god. “And when you kissed me, you let a single tear say the very thing you knew I couldn't hear: The truest love resigns itself to everything.”

Author's Response: I'm so happy you enjoyed it MelBal. I considered the whole "deathbed" scenario, but in truth, that so very rarely happens. The worst news is more often delivered unexpected, and you never get to say what you wanted to say. (It was a strange comfort for Pam to know the diagnosis, but on the other hand, it raises a lot of "what if he had stayed here and had gone in sooner" questions as well.) The voice mail was a way to keep the "goodbye" happier.rnrnThe Elling song is truly heartbreaking and beautiful. I was disappointed that I could not find the vocal version for free online so I could link it. I'm not much of a "crier" in general, but the first time I ever heard it, I'd bought the CD in Borders and when I was driving home, I stuck it in the car CD player. As I was listening to that particular song, I literally had to pull off the road in a parking lot and have myself a several tissue cry. I must have listened to it five times in a row. rnrnI'm glad you liked it, too. Thanks very much for reading and commenting.rn
