I'm so happy this one got posted on the Home page because I might never have found it. What a gem. Beautiful flow. Really lovely.

Author's Response: So glad you found this (I didn't even know it had popped up the Home page)...it was written between S2/3, so of course, it's totally off-canon now - so it's great to hear that it still worked for you. Thanks so much, jkfan9989!

Oo, very lovely use of non linear-ness :D The last line of the fic is totally perfect that way.

Author's Response: I'm so happy that the non-linear thing seemed to work...wasn't sure if it would be too confusing, but it just felt right to me while I was writing it. Thanks again, AliLamba, for reading and reviewing my stories!

this is immaculate. i like the way you paint them, whether seperate or together. and, just an observation, i love the way you write them when they're together in your stories. they are such charming characters, but you somehow take that up a notch.

Author's Response: Immaculate? That is beyond flattering. So glad you think I did right by the characters. As I said below, I feel much 'closer' (for lack of a better description) to my more recent stories (1-07 and beyond), but I still have a fondness for this one. Thanks for such a generous review, Emily!

I'm floored that this is something you would consider discarding.

She looks like the rest of his life.

Just lovely....and how prophetic, given the season finale.

The rest of it is just beautiful.

Author's Response: Thanks so much, Sweetpea...this is probably the only fic I wrote before Jan. '07 that I can read now and not cringe! (I guess back then I felt like it divurged too much from what 'actually' happened, so thought it might seem irrelevent...nowadays I just say the hell with that, LOL.) Anyway - glad you found it and 'prophetic' - hee! Who knew?

Just came across this story.  Loved it!

Author's Response: So glad you dug this out and enjoyed it. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing, NanReg!

I like the flipping from the past to the present to the future.  And the ending- amazing!  The ending was perfect.  So poignant.

Author's Response: How incredibly flattering that you're digging these older stories out! So glad you like the ending (the final line actually drove the entire story) and the inverted/non-linear structure.  Have to say, this story is still very close to my heart. Obviously written before S3, hence out of sync with what actually happened...so happy it has some resonance for you anyway. Thanks StarryDreamer - much appreciate the review.

I really enjoyed reading your story. Love the way the timeline is sort of looped around to itself. Made it much more interesting.

Author's Response: Thanks, Sheppy. Glad the unusual timeline made sense to you. Appreciate the review!

How did I forget to review this earlier?  Oh well, second drink, right?  Love the rhythm of this, and how the timeline loops back.  Just. Freaking. Lovely.

Author's Response: Thanks Lisahoo! Glad it worked for you...and second drink is always the best one, right? (In fact, I'm so partial to them that I actually once wrote a rather steamy story by that name in my first Vignettes series.) You're a doll for reviewing!

wow! I loved it!

I loved the symmetry in the writing: how you started with "okay" and finished with it too... You had me a little lost in the middle, with the big jump, but the story caught up with itself by the end!
Sweet, sexy, and perfectly Pam/Jim. Great job!

Author's Response: Glad you liked it. It was fun to play around with the structure of this - jumping ahead, then backtracking. Thanks for reviewing!

This is incredible.  I feel like I need to get down and bow to you.  Someone suggested this to me and said it was the best Jim and Pam they had ever read.  I will say it was definately the most beautiful and I loved the way the plot was out of order.  I was so scared that after the gorgeous description of their life together that someone would wake up and I would have just died.  This was romantic and sexy without being smutty or immature...I adored it.  Plain and simple.  best. story. ever.

Author's Response: Wow. This backlog of fics doesn't get reviewed much anymore, so it's really a treat to get new comments - especially when they're this generous! Anyway, glad the inverted structure worked for you too. And I'm really touched that you felt so strongly about the story. Many thanks!

Umm, how did I never review this? I suspect you posted it while I was away during vacation but that's certainly no excuse! I know I read it, I know I loved it. So full of those Colette moments that I love so much. You capture so perfectly the near-desperation of the two of them when they finally come together, thinking it's not real in the dark hours of the night, reaching for each other just for that connection. You convey the pain and longing and recovery so well. Lovely!

Author's Response: Why, hello there...what a great surprise finding a review for an older story (from all the way back in the dark ages of Sept!) No need to apologize - I'm sure I haven't reviewed a bunch of your older pieces, from before I got into reviewing mode. Anyway, glad you liked this...of course, nothing turned out this way in the show (as if I expected it to!) Yet...I still sense a desperation, as you say (Karen Schmaren,) and all they need is to reach for that connection and it would all be Okay, no? Ah, the agony and ecstasy of fanfic. Thanks so much for revisiting this (one of the 3-4 fics I've done that I actually still like!) and for your always perceptive review.

Well, you asked for commentary. I hadn't reviewed this because I had problems with the transition, or lack of it, between the section where they're longing for one another and the section where suddenly they're together in the back yard while she paints. I felt like I'd skipped a chapter. I needed the scene where they finally reach across that chasm and find one another again.

And then, damn if you didn't give it to me, at the um climax of the story. How brilliant is that? Turning the narrative order inside out on me like that, well, I don't know how to say "well done" enough. I didn't know exactly how to review something that well done. I feel like, well, like John Krasinski evaluating David Foster Wallace. :)

Further, these are two of the HOTTEST paragraphs I've ever read from you (which is saying a lot):

The intensity of it was almost too much. He began to understand why characters in romantic novels go mad from this. Finally, he starts to believe his welcome won’t disappear at any given moment. He finds it’s even better when he starts to trust it, to relax into it a little. Now he relishes making her laugh in the dark almost as much as making her moan.

When they were first together he’d always make love to her like it might be the last time. He’d try to memorize every facet of her body, just in case it was: the luxury of her breasts pressed against his chest; the secret taste of her; her voice crying his name when he’s deeply, tightly, blissfully enveloped by her.

Except for the paragraph starting Sometimes when they lie in bed together which melted my face.

I don't know what else I can say. Except I hope the crew at Reveille is downloading and printing this stuff out, so that the cast and crew can enjoy them as much as we do.

Author's Response:

nej - I really appreciate you checking this out. When you mentioned my collection of pieces in your last review, I immediately thought of this, because, it's the one I suppose I like best. And I really value your opinion.

JK and DFW?!?!? In my dreams! But seriously, I'm glad you liked the inverted structure...somehow, it just felt right to me to deconstruct the order that way - in fact I started this piece with the very last, brief, line.

Strange how these things come to you - the piece I wrote right before this (No Reason At All) is very different, but in my mind is very linked to this. (Also one of the ones I feel closest to, BTW.)

Anyway...thanks for all your comments. I was really interested in what you'd have to say. The crew at Reveille, huh? Nice fantasy! (Oh, and sorry about your face!)

This is absolutely gorgeous - just stunning, stunning prose, as always.  I kept thinking, I'm going to mention this line in my review as one of my favorites....then several lines down, I'd find another.

You capture what Pam must be thinking so beautifully here, seriously -- This? "Maybe being strong isn’t about being alone." -- just beautiful.

And this? "She looks beautiful and focused and content. She looks like the rest of his life." almost made me cry.

Seriously, you are so incredibly, incredibly talented - I just love all your stuff! Keep it coming....

Author's Response:

Talk about writing great reviews...oh my. Am truly touched by your comments. I had trouble parting with this one, and ironically it may be the one I've felt most deeply about, so it's especially great to know it came across - especially to the writers I most admire.

Have a head full of snippets for other stories, but nothing gelled yet...I hope some of your remarkable ability to be prolific (and still maintain high quality) will rub off on me! Or maybe just imagining rubbing up against Jim would do the trick...hmmmm. Seriously, thanks so much.

This was beautiful. I love how you switched back and forth from Jim to Pam. The the section about Jim and Karen was so well done, too.

Author's Response: Thanks, Kaystar. Glad you thought the Jim/Karen stuff worked...who knows how it will 'actually' play out (she says, slightly nervously.)

Wow.  This is gorgeous.  So melancholy, but hopeful.  I want to cry now...

" If only she could do it without this aching phantom limb."  What a great way to express her loss (because that's really what it is).

Author's Response: Many thanks. I do feel like apart, it's like each of them is missing an essential piece of themselves. Sorry to make you cry!

Oh, so lovely! I adore how all the pieces fall together. I think it really worked, showing how they wound up happy together before showing them working it out by starting with the same simple "Okay" that reflected the start of it all. Wonderfully done!

Author's Response:

Glad the slightly mixed up stucture made sense...it just felt like the natural way to do it (at least in my non-linear mind!) And yeah, I thought a simple 'okay' could take it full circle in a sense. In any case, I'm happy you liked it!

Beautiful!  I love how you showed the happy ending before the reconciliation.  It made me anticipate it even more.

Author's Response: Flipping the order just seemed right when I wrote it - it kind of came to me that way (actually, I began with the very last line, how inverted is that?) Happy that you liked it.

My new all time favorite! You're brilliant.

Author's Response: Aw, gee, now I really am blushing. And a little amazed, because this is one fic I seriously felt very unsure of - wrote it all in one rush, than thought...maybe not. Thanks so much!

Yeah. Still love it. Hee! And so you know I'll be (highly!) recommending it on FanForum.Com's The Office board.

The line "She looks like the rest of his life" is quite possibly the most beautiful description of love I've ever heard. Ever. And I absolutely adored the subtle remark about Pam's paintings and how they evolved from simple and delicate to a bit louder and stronger. Just like Pam. And yet Jim loved them - and her - both ways.

I imply can not say enough here. I rarely review (pure laziness I admit!) but this was simply woo wonderful not to. I mhope this encourages you to write more. You truly have a knack for grabbing ahold of your reader and integrating them into the world you have created effortlessly (or "effort-luh-lessly" as Michael would say. ;))

Perfectly lovely.

Author's Response:

Again, thanks Meghan. And much appreciate the recommendation on FanForum. How great is that?

I'm always intrigued with Pam's character possibilities as an artist, as you may know if you've read any of my other fics here, so the detail you picked up on is especially important to me. Am seriously moved by your wonderful review(s)...so generous and encouraging! Really. Wow.

Wow. I haven't even finished it yet but I simply had to comment. This is literally one of the most beautiful pieces of fiction I have ever read. It is absolutely gorgeous and reminds me of poetry. You have a true way with words and your style is a reader's dream. I honestly can barely put into words how much I love this. So much so I know I will be saving it to my hard drive. Thank you.

Author's Response:

It is so gratifying to read your reaction. I love writing this stuff, when the mood strikes, but it adds a whole new level to know it's being read and appreciated like this. Seriously, thank you.
