This just feels very accurate to Pam's mindset at that time.

Ouch, Pam. Those last few thoughts are a doozy. I do think these are realistic, other than I think there's like an 80% chance Jim would've invited his mom over to meet Pam. But definitely right for Pam's POV. Nicely done.

The only problem was that she could also see the look on his face when he told her that it wasn’t working out, that she wasn’t enough for him, that for him the fantasy had been ten times better than the reality.

You know, that is something that has never really been alluded to, yet I think it's EXACTLY why she never took the chance.  Maybe even now is still hesitating.  She doesn't feel good enough.

This was really insightful - you should make time to write more!!!!  I really liked it. :-)

I think you got the root of the ambivalence Pam has always felt between Roy and Jim perfectly. It's all about her own insecurity and fear of change. Your last line is so sad...and made me really hope she redefines 'enough' (in the show too, not just fanfic - cause that's not enough!)

Awww, poor Pam.  I thought you captured well her dilemma when it came to Roy and Jim.  Safety makes her stay.  Nice story.

This is a fabulous insight, and a part of Pam's dilemma that I haven't seen expressed so succinctly before. An outstanding line in a great piece!

Really enjoyed this. You did a great job with Pam's comparisons between Roy and Jim. But this line almost broke my heart - "The only problem was that she could also see the look on his face when he told her that it wasn’t working out, that she wasn’t enough for him, that for him the fantasy had been ten times better than the reality"

Aw.  The last few paragraphs are so sad -- so much of what I can see Pam thinking -- the real reason why she won't let herself be with Jim, because she's afraid of the rejection, and Roy -- Roy has always been safe and easy for her.  No fear of losing him, right?

Also:   this may sound like an odd comment, but I thought $49 was a lot for a shirt.  I think I must be cheap.  I would probably think $29 would the price which I'd think, "Ah, that's kind of expensive, but not so much that I'd feel guilty about only wearing it twice."  If it was a dress or a pair of jeans...  well..  yeah, I know, I'm cheap.  I just had to comment on it because I don't see Pam as the kind of person who'd spend a lot of money on herself.  Although it's not like she's buying Gucci sunglasses, right?  Mmmm... Gucci....

I love the idea of Pam imagining Jim at the mall, though.  Going to the Gap for a new shirt, and then "rewarding" himself with a new CD.  Also:  I was wondering afterwards why Jim didn't introduce his mom --- maybe that would be too personal.  "Hey, Mom, this is Pam, I'm in love with her, but she's engaged to be married and thinks we're just friends."  Ha!
