Again, the emotional manipulation Roy performs with Pam's friends and family is just absolutely brutal to read. Poor girl. I'm glad she has someone in her corner.

The sections of this with Pam's mom before she accepts that Roy is abusing her are really just so difficult to read.

Very much appreciate you having Jim make the choice to work to prepare himself to be as much of a resource to Pam as he can here, as opposed to letting him just stumble onto the right answers.

You know, there are a lot of very hateable versions of Roy in JAM fanfic - I honestly think yours might be the most vile, and I mean that as a compliment.

Definitely some interesting choices being made here, especially with Jim - seems sensible enough that he's sort of stumbling with exactly how to help Pam, even though his intentions are obviously good.

"There was no one in the world but her and Roy. She knew this as surely as she knew the earth revolves around the sun."

One thing I think you do a good job of throughout this fic is painting how isolating Roy's abuse is for Pam - and that starts right from the beginning.

So I kinda cheated. I went over to FFN and read the rest of this story cause I was dying to see where it went. I'll try to keep reviews on topic for each chapter or chapters though.

I'm glad here that Pam finally admits the truth to her Dad. I feels like slow progress on her part, but it's still progess.

Nice chapter here. Good to have a bit of brteak from all the heaviness. A nice walk in the rain, get some anger out, and then a nice evening at home. There's still a lot to get through, but this was a greak break.

The shadow of Roy is long. He's not there physically but he's still trying to get everyone against Pam. Sadly, save Jim, it seems to be working. I really hate that even though Pam is the one with bruises on her face people seem to think Roy was somehow ok in hitting and hurting her. Doesn't matter if he's drunk or sober, NO IT'S NOT!!!!!

I know I keep saying this, but it's true. I'm really glad that the best person who could be in Pam's corner, is. Keep it up Jim.

I get why Pam's not telling her Mom things over the phone, but I also have this feeling that maybe it would be better if she did come clean. She's angry that her Mom's not on her side, but her Mom doesn't have the whole story yet. Hopefully that's something to get fixed sometime soon.

Roy's still a jerk. May want to see about expanding that PPO to any of Pam's family as well.

Jim's great as always.

Love that Pam is progressing with her recovery. The nightmares seem really troubling thus far. Understandable of course. Glad she's first off agreed to talk to the counselor and to start opening up about it all to them.

Jim is still being great. Yes he loves her, he wants to be in a relationship with her, but to push that now would be taking advantage of her and he knows that. That's the last thing she needs. Really glad to see Jim acting like this.

Great progress on Pam's part. Getting away from Roy. Calling the cops right away. Not letting him in. Loved that though she's scared, he doesn't control her anymore.

Still love this Jim. That he's there to do everything to protect her.

Their discussion there was great. How Pam is opening up more. Realizing everything. Seems like a lot of progress. Good job that Jim is just there to listen to her, be there for her. Loved it.

So that's annoying with Toby. Knock it off.

Pam still needs time to process things. Gonna take some time though. Though having her hear her Mom say that about Roy would clearly sting.

Oh holy crap. This can't be good. Glad she didn't let him in and reached for a phone right away.

Yes it's going to be a long road. The nightmare shows that. However she does show signs of progress. Letting Jim take care of her. Agreeing to the safety plan. Lots of good progress. Hope to see more of that. Likewise I hope any and all bail is denied for Roy. Let him rot.

Finally! Get that creep behind bars and throw away the key. Now hopefully Pam can really start down the road to recovery. One where she's not jumping at shadows. One with her best friend at her side. One that shows her light and hope.

Big turn for Pam here. Wanting to go to the cops. As well she should. Then there's Jim. He knows what to do, he wants to fix it, but he also knows it has to come from her. It has to be her choice otherwise nothing really changes. Good on him for realizing that.

I’m dying to know why Pam won’t go to the hospital or the police. I get the feeling there’s more involved than her exhaustion. I’m also worried that Jim isn’t going to be able to defend them against Roy... I’m excited for the next update.

Okay, I finally have time to sit down and actually write a review. Normally I try to review every chapter, but there's been a lot going on. I'll try to hit the big points.

First off there are a lot of Roy's in fics that I've come to hate. Most of the time its because he's abusive to Pam. I think this Roy is the number one most disgusting Roy I've ever read. He gaslights Pam, beats her, does everything to avoid any form of responsibility, I mean the Roy in this story is a monster. Plain and simple.

I love this Jim though. How once he's figured out what's going on he doesn't shy away from anything. I said awhile ago he's going to take some serious steel in his spine to see Pam through all this. That's been proven. Jim has the courage to stay involved. To not just accept Pam's excuses. To seek out the right way of doing things. And most importantly to defend and protect Pam. If the Roy here is the bar none the prime example of toxic masculinity, this Jim is what true masculinity is. Standing up for those you love, being willing to face the hazard, and tempering those hard vitures with love and compassion.

Pam's journey through all this has been the real rollercoaster. To see her gradually realize what's going on. She's able to shake off the fog that was holding her mind prison. Once she saw that it gave her the courage to leave and fight back. Great job Pam. Clearly there are going to be scars. Phsyical and mental, but through all this she's gained the strength to deal with things on her own. Also the wisdom to seek out those who will truly support her and protect her. A hard road to watch her walk, espcially since she backslid a few times, but she's moving out into the light of truth and that at least is good to see.

Great writing to bring all that out.

Author's Response:

Thank you for your insightful comments, and for seeing exactly what I hoped to show. I posted a ex explanation on one of the chapters on another site explaining why Roy so unlikeable, so very mean- I don't want to say exaggerated because there are abusers just like him out there and I'm not aiming to downplay what people are going through- but here is the explanation-

Roy is mean and nasty, he and Jim are polar opposites this way, like a black/white dove comparison. Roy had to be really mean and Pam had to be really dragged down to give things resonance that was lasting; and to show how devoted Jim is to her - the worse Roy is, the better Jim is. Hope that made sense.

Well I’m hooked. I can’t wait for the next chapter. Pam’s struggle with accepting her situation is very realistic and true to character. I like how Jim is trying to help her just as a friend; he’s only indicated his feelings for her a couple times. I think that’s helpful for Pam and might make her feel less guilty. I hope Roy doesn’t attack them both after this. 😬

What a realistic scene you've created. I'm hopeful this isn't the end and some kind of resolution is achieved!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much. This part of the story is  already written, 42 chapters long. I'm uploading as and when I can.

There is a sequel I'm working on (2 chapters currently). Apologies it's long and drawn out x

Well as heartbreaking as this is, hopefully it also means there's a breakthrough. Going to the hospital like that, with doctors and nurses who know the signs and symptoms of abuse. Yeah, it's impossible to deny any longer Pam. And look there's Jim being the great guy he is. As always just there for her.

I really hope this means she's turned a corner. It seems at least Jim is aware just how wrong thing are for her. Seems like he's bound and determined to make it stop. Please lean into that Pam. Lean into true love, care, and affection. Someone who will show you what it truly means to love you for who you are.

Really hoping we see something like that soon.

Okay, so yeah, wow. Give me a second here. Lots of heavy implications. Considering what we know of Roy, having Pam come back to the Dundies seems like it's not going to bode well. Likewise when (if) he finds out it was Jim who gave her a ride home. Just look what happened last time Roy thought Jim was encroaching. Makes me a little nervous as what's to come in the next chapter.

Seems like a good start for Jim. Just letting her know he's there for her. Anytime she needs it, he's there for her. I've got a feeling it's going to take a less subtle approach to the situation, but it seems like a good start. Try not to frighten her away from him, make sure she knows she's safe with him.

You can almost feel Jim's heart breaking for her as he watches her like this. To see the woman he's fallen in love with slowly fading away. Really hope he can add some life into her soon.

Ok there's the glimpse of hope I was looking for last chapter. Seems like Pam does have a clue as to what Roy's doing. No, those aren't displays of affection, they're him marking his territory. On her and for anyone to else to see. But the fact he is so brazen about it all again just makes me want to drive a fist in his face.

Good job Jim. Trust your gut here. But hold on tight. She's in deep and it's going to take some serious steel in your spine to get her out. Though should (when) you win the day, I've got a feeling that the relationship that will be formed with Jim and Pam will be like steel that's been heated, forged, quenched, and tempered. Great writing.
