“Okay,” was all he said, letting her hands slip away. He felt the ripping of his heart and wondered if it were possible to continue living with pain like this.

He was alive long enough to slide into his car. When the tears stopped, he flipped open his cell.

“Jan? Yeah. I’ll tell Michael tomorrow.”
