This was an interesting experiment for me; the original version is 1,916 words.  :o)

They were re-stocking the shelves in the supply area, talking about nothing.

 

And then she blurted, “Do you still feel it?”

 

He looked stunned – then guarded, almost angry.

 

“Pam – “ 

 

Fear in his voice.  He was running; and she really couldn’t begrudge him that.

 

But she wasn’t willing to waste any more time.

 

And so she said, her voice a caress: “You have to take a chance on something sometime.  Isn’t that what you told me once?”

 

His lips trembled.  He didn’t blink; the muscle in his jaw bulged, tears in his eyes. 

 

She knew why he hesitated.

 

What he wanted.

 

So she stepped forward, standing on her toes and taking his face in her hands, pressing her lips to his. 

 

His voice was a gruff whisper against her mouth: “Yes.”
