Bio:
20-something fangirl; I've only really had two other fandoms (X-Files and House MD) so I tend to be pretty loyal to my 'ships.

Obviously JAM is my number one interest on The Office, but I also enjoy Jim/Katy, Jim/Karen, and Pam/Roy for the insights into Jim and Pam they provide. Kelly/Ryan and Michael/Jan are interesting too- but I really only have time for one main interest on the show, so JAM it is!

Love reading well-written fic (which this site is a treasure trove of) and tend to leave somewhat analytical reviews- a remainder from writing for a literary criticism magazine. I do intend it to be of interest to the author though because from the few fics I've written I enjoyed getting meaty feedback more than 'OMG totes awesome BUT WRITE MOAR!!1!' reviews :)

If I move from writing House!fic to writing JAM!fic, I'll be sure to share it; everyone here is fantastic and I'd love to contribute.

Oh, if anyone is looking for a beta (grammar, flow of the story, character development), ask away!

I use the same username on LJ and Metafilter, I'm on Reddit under occidental_inkling.

Liked it very much ;)

I loved the idea of being stuck in the truck together; what a way to 'force' them to speak to each other or come up with one of their unique Pam and Jim ways of amusing each other- smut involved or not.

so I'm ignoring your suggestion and reading this one first... meeting someone from Jim's past intrigued me.

I'm going to leave a gargantuan review at the end, but I needed to say that
‘Yeah, she’s fine,’ Sara answered, pulling him towards the elevator. ‘I was just blabbing to her. Nothing important. Really liked her, by the way.’
resulted in me laughing out loud. Sara's voice was so clear in my mind; clearly telling him 'girl talk- so MYOB!'.

Entertaining, but in a wonderfully substantial way.

Author's Response:

Sorry to be such a bossy little thing, telling you what to read, lol. It’s not that I don’t have affection for these early stories – I just kind of cringe a little, cause my writing has gotten a bit sparer since then. But, I just glanced over this for the first time in ages, and noticed something: I gave Jim writing aspirations way back in pre-Philly Jim days. Who knew? And this was also written before Karen had even been invented. Wow.

Anyway, Sara is (I think) the only totally 'made-up' major character I’ve ever used in a fanfic, so I’m glad she felt real to you. (I tend to be more interested in riffing on canon-based stuff.) Also glad you're finding this entertaining, but not mindless. Thanks so much variella - flattered that you're checking out my stuff. ;-)

So, hope you’ll read some later stuff, but glad you’re having fun with this too!

Summary:

So this started in my mind as a little one shot (cue mocking laughter).  Of course it expanded to a little more.  It's pure speculation on my part, and is probably quite off.  :o)

OMG I love Sensitive Michael who can be tactless at exactly the right moment sometimes. You 'did' him perfectly (that's what she said...).

I, too, am a sucker for Sensitive Michael -- glad you enjoyed him here!  (That is also what she said.)  :o)

I like how you added in Jonathan. And I love this fic- my weakness is for fics that take a canon moment (that doesn't necessarily do much in the show) and use it as a jumping-off point for something entirely different but in character. Or close to it ;)

I liked your Karen... you portrayed the K/J relationship well and in a way that followed the ep, but you didn't make her she-devil!Karen.

And Jim and Pam ending up together... well, that's just icing on the cake. They're the one fic pairing in any fandom I have where it doesn't sound unrealistic to have 'I love you' pillow talk- they're just too sweet together.

This might be an older fic, but it's a goodie for sure.

Nice chapter. And by nice I don't mean 'here's a throwaway adjective', I mean you really struck a balance between exploring Roy and Jim... and it didn't seem far-fetched at all for Roy to ask what he did. Personally, I'd think Jim would be one of the first people Roy would go to for advice or information because he has the inside track on Pam. And imagining Jim playing basketball is always a winner ;)

Jim and Pam from around the time of The Return. She asks him to come over to help her move furniture. Starts out slow and sweet but builds to deserve the MA rating.

This is really cool- seeing things from Karen's perspective helps show how she could have not known about Jim and Pam... and the suspense is fun too!

I like the idea of Karen and Pam being friends- I don't like Karen with Jim, but Pam needs a female work friend too and Karen's the best candidate.

Pam fought the urge to pick it back out and pocket it, a little souvenir of the day.
such a girl thing to do. *sneaking a look at my own box of mementos on the shelf*

Like what she expected would happen when he walked through that door.
I feel so guilty for just assuming duh, you're going to bed with him since if they just wanted to chat they could have gone to Starbucks.

Her first fantasies of being with Jim predated her break-up with Roy by years
THANK YOU! *cheering*

she was glad that her fantasy of Jim's style seemed not very different from reality
This is a really sexy statement... maybe because it communicates the familiarity and novelty of the situation at the same time?

Unlike her previous sexual partner, she somehow knew she would be able to trust Jim to remember her needs, too.

wow. I'd say cheap shot, but I have a feeling he-who-shall-not-be-named deserves it.

fast in, slow out
using those four tiny words turned a useful sentence into a white hot descriptive one. nice. very nice.

Honestly, Pam, I had no idea you were soooo easy
You have such a great Jim!voice. And this line tempers the other emotions a little to make everything together more realistic.

Obviously I enjoyed this, not hard to do since it was so well written :)

Really, really good. Very Pam/Roy I think, as they were in their relationship at this point in the show.

He was still the only man on the planet who had seen her naked.
I'm about 99.999% sure that this is canon up to the point this fic takes place; and a huge reason why she took awhile to consciously clue into how she felt about Jim.

I have a sneaking suspicion this is pretty much what happened when she left after the wedding....

Summary:

“I get it now, she’s everything I’m not.” She says as a few tears slip out from beneath her lashes.  His subconscious realizes at this moment that she’s unconsciously mimicking a line from the Royal Tenenbaums, one of their joint favorite films. When he replays this conversation in his mind later, this will break his heart.

Speaking as an extraordinarily moody woman (and officially diagnosed as such :) ) with very nearly the same issues as Pam... you are more than fair, and describing the feelings in Jim that my extraordinarily understanding and patient man has had to deal with.

I thought you did well at 'painting' Pam's feelings without too much sympathy or taking sides with her. I really liked knowing that you are writing Jim from personal experience to some extent- something I think is missing sometimes with the majority of writers being women.

Enjoying this so, so much.

Nice. Jim and Pam may be adults, but I think they're both adolescents, emotionally speaking, so this seems a natural consequence of that. Loving Lisa in the fic; nobody can succeed without a mentor or role model of sorts and that is a role Jim simply could not take on.

You're right about relationships having one issue that will keep coming back to them, and this seems to be theirs.

Author's Response: Wow, it's neat to get some new reviews on an old piece.  I'm gratified you're reading and appreciate your thoughtful comments.

Well, it might not be likely, but certainly plausible... One of Jim's more disturbing traits is his need to please or be liked by women above his own feelings or needs (or so it seems so far, that is). Also, when it comes to things that cut deep emotionally Jim is not a risk taker, which sex with someone you care about definitely is.

Karen is the hardest one to see happening the way you described, but the brick wall in their physical intimacy would go a long way to explain their emotional disconnect (or Karen not really realizing? willing to see it?) over his feelings for Pam. Karen would be quick to blame it on the sex angle... very interesting to contemplate.

Not to mention that after a certain amount of time I could see a guy just stop pushing and go along with whatever woman he was with was willing to do.

Okay, most of this is my stream of consciousness rambling, but in conclusion I thought it was written well and Pam acted very Pam. Nice to see her being the more experienced and confident one for a change ;)

See, lines like “It feels like electricity,” He murmurs, before realizing that he should be embarrassed. are wonderful... being able to say it despite the fact that maybe you 'should' feel differently. And Pam accepted it :)

These same words will ring false on another night, in another bed, but under all her halting, nervous twittering Jim knows she means it. Tonight, knowing and hoping will mean the same thing.
I was thinking, I could almost skim over the first sentence as not meaning much in context, but you put it in there for a reason... and it brings up an important point. Disturbing, but important. So glad you left it a little open... and after all, if they do stay together it will not be perfect.

So I have my own ideas, but "You taste different" vs She still tastes exactly the same.: what did you intend by that? Or is that purely up to the reader? ;)

Loved it and favorited.

I enjoyed the entire story- and I'm very glad I came across it when it was complete, I don't think I'd be able to bear waiting for new posts!

One of the things I liked best was Pam leaving Jim's card alone; first, respecting the fact that Jim decided to keep it, therefore it is NOT HERS.
