I just signed up to MTT after reading this story, because all I can say is...wow. That was simply wonderful - a perfect mix of angst and loveliness. Your dialogue, particularly the unfinished sentences, perfectly captures the way Jim and Pam would talk to each other. I loved their dance.

Summary:

This will be a series of self-contained chapters (oneshots) exploring various "what ifs" pertaining to episodes spanning seasons one through three. Each chapter will examine how things would've gone differently if either Jim or Pam had responded to a given situation the way that (most) fans had wanted or almost expected them to.

For example, the first chapter focuses on how things would've happened differently if Jim had confessed during those twenty-seven seconds of silence on the booze cruise when we were all holding our breath and hoping he would.

Among the other chapters I have mapped out: What if all the reminders of Jim in "Gay Witch Hunt" had provoked not a small, sad smile from Pam at the end of the episode, but rather, had motivated her to take action -- drive to Stamford to see him for the first time in four months? Or what if Jim had responded to Pam's text in "Diwali" via a post-Jagermeister phone call? What if Jim had walked in on Pam crying at the end of "Back From Vacation"? (...You get the idea.)

Again, though, each chapter will be confined to an episode, so it will essentially be a series of oneshots that are unrelated to each other.

Oh wow, I really enjoyed this. I love the way you've spread the angst out across four longish chapters without having it go stale. I can't wait for the happy end chapter but at the same time I want it to keep going! Very much looking forward to the next chapter.
I'm new to Office fic so have had it easy, reading all the completed chapter stories from the past few years. This is the first time I've had to wait for the next chapter to be written. So I'm extra excited about chapter 5. :)

Author's Response: Don't you hate it when angst goes stale? Sometimes I worry about going overboard, because there's only so much even *I* can take. I don't want Jim/Pam to come across like Angel/Buffy or some other desperate star-crossed romance like that. So I'm pleased that it doesn't seem that way!

I am also relatively new to the Office fiction world, and now that I'm starting to find pieces that aren't updated frequently, it hurts my heart a little. But I'll try to get my next chapter out ASAP. Thanks again for reviewing! :)

I'm really enjoying this. I love the serene rhythm of their dialogue and the way they feel stung at times by what they're saying to each other, yet accept that it needs to be said.

This is a great story!

I loved the girly shopping chapter - this line was my absolute favourite:
“But nothing too slutty. And nothing green.”

And now things are getting tense in the office. You've captured it so well, it almost makes me feel uncomfortable reading it! But I love how you've covered the very real, conflicting emotions Jim has in relation to Karen and their past relationship.
