Love the idea, love the repitition and all the sensory details... this is great! The ending is fabulous because it's so obviously lacking that second sentence (and because it's just a great last line). I also love the lines about the key turning in a lock and tasting the beach and how all men should wearing Levi jeans... there were more, definitely, but I don't want to end up quoting the whole thing! Really, really nice job here.
Author's Response: Thanks, allibabab - I do appreciate the specifics! Glad you liked the format - it was a bit of a stretch :)

Oh gosh, this is so sad. I love the ending, though, where Jim noticed everything about Pam's appearance, not like he's trying to but like the memory of this bad experience is kind of branding itself into his brain... awesome job including that. That's how those things happen, I think, so you including it makes this story that much more realistic. I love the line toward the beginning about Roy waiting downstairs but being a heavy weight on their back -- what a great metaphor. This is just great.

Aww, what a cute story. I love how you included the talking-head moments -- it was a really good way to finish. Your dialogue was also really good. Thanks for this! Sometimes it's easy to get bogged down by angsty Jim/Pam stuff, so it's always nice to read something lighthearted and fun like this. :)
Author's Response:
Thank you so much- and thank you for taking the time to look at some of the older stuff!
The angst has been killing me lately, but these two can be so much fun together!

Oh man. This is another one of those stories where I want to quote practically every line because there are so many really, really good ones. One, for example, was this: "But we were standing in the parking lot and your eyes were- And I was drunk." I seriously love this because with all of the context, I know exactly what look you're talking about and you didn't even have to describe it whatsoever -- it's like it's this indescribably look, which fits perfectly. I also love the line about how she's not supposed to touch him and how he'd have understood what she wanted even if she hadn't said anything, even if she'd just looked at him. And! Lastly, my other favorite line was how she's "never felt anything so close to love as this and that's a horrible thought because [she's] been engaged for three years." I know this review is not being helpful or thoughtful at all, but all of those lines are so beautiful and meaningful and wonderfully written... this piece is just amazing. The title is great as well, not only because it fits literally with the story what with the darkness and Jim's silhouette over her, but also metaphorically in that silhouettes are ambiguous and representative... just lovely. Amazing job with this.

Oh gosh. Another perfect piece from you -- I love everything about this, from your dialogue to your descriptions to... well, everything else. I love when she wonders if he's playing differently because she's there and then he tries not to but can't really help it. That always happens, and it's always cute, but this story is just undeniably adorable. Awesome job, as always.
Author's Response: Yay - I'm always happy to hear the dialogue sounds right to a reader. Thanks, allibabab!

This is such a clever, sexy idea. I love that Pam finds out it's Jim's advice that's giving her so much pleasure and that pretty much makes it Jim who's doing anything to her, even when it's really Roy. Really nice idea and lovely writing -- thanks for sharing this!

Aw... if only things had ended up being as simple as all this. You've done such a nice job here -- my favorite line, though, would have to be this: "...at this break of the silence, time seemed to speed forward with a whoosh and the sound of a sob..." This was just a great way to bring this feeling to words because it really is just like that when things like that happen. This was lovely. Thank you for sharing!

Lovely. I adore the line about "letting out the breath they'd both been holding for so long" -- what a great way to describe the release in the tension. Beautiful title and idea, too. I love dancing stories. :)

Oh lord, this is hilarious! I think Paper Girl is probably my favorite. She hasn't yet given in on this point but he's optimistic if he wins Salesman of the Year again, it might give him the leverage he needs. This sounds just like Dwight, and this was such a clever idea, and you did it so, so well. Fabulous job!
Author's Response:
Thanks allibabab! I love Dwight so much. He's just such an enigma and a fool but always fun.

Oh gosh, I love this. I can so see Pam living contentedly alone, happy enough by herself, but still just a little... without, and missing him. Her finding the directions, printing out the directions, driving closer and closer every time is so great -- she's all for taking small steps, I think; grand gestures are a little too scary sometimes. My favorite parts are when you wrote about her being happy and going about her week because that really just fit with me in terms of characterization, and my favorite line was probably the third to last, about everything that's changed and everything that hasn't. Nice to way end this piece, as well. Lovely job! Thanks so much for this.
Author's Response:
Thanks allibabab! I'm so glad you reviewed this because it caused me to read this again and it was nice to see that this is one story I wrote this season that still seems to ring completely true. There's nothing here that I don't think Pam would have or has done.
Thanks so much for taking the time to tell me you liked it. It means more than you know.

Hmmm... it's a hard decision, but I'm going to have to say that 4 and 5 were my favorites of all five -- in fact, I'll even go so far as to say 5 was my top favorite of them all. :P I think you showed some real insight here, especially in this line: "Pam had always felt more important to him and that somehow made it all bearable." That makes so much sense and it really explains how Pam would have been able to more easily deal with his dating other people (well, not to mention her excusing everything with her engagement to Roy, but that's a given). This is just lovely. Thanks so much for sharing it with us!

This is so wonderful! Karen may have been difficult for you to write, but I think you've done a great job with her voice. I absolutely love your last lines to every section about Jim's happiness -- using the italics to emphasize different words and just changing the entire sentences up was brilliant. Those lines really said a lot about the rest of the sections that they were attached to. This is wonderfully written. Really nice job.

This is beautiful! I've said it before and I'll say it again -- I love stories that are all action and description and no dialogue. I think it leaves so much up to the writer to explain and you've done such a nice job with that. There are so many things about this that I think are fabulous: 1) all the "once" sentences where she leaves Jim speechless, 2) using the ring to just symbolize everything about her relationship with Roy (the way it doesn't fit, the way it tarnishes, the way it weighs her down, etc.), and 3) this line: "She sees the hurt in his eyes, but doesn't think before she speaks, because if she does, she won't be brave." That is just so, so Pam and so, so real -- it's so much harder to be brave when you've already thought about everything that could go wrong.
This is just great. Awesome job.

Oh gosh, I'm such a sucker for stories with no speaking. It seems to make it all the more intimate because they're able to communicate without using any words... sigh. This was lovely. Having no dialogue really allowed you to describe things more fully and it's left me feeling even more in tune with the story. I love all your imagery and your repitition of the line, "And it's all she could do..." not to just jump Jim's bones, etc. :P
My favorite line was probably this: "The air is thick between them, and if she hadn't looked outside, she would have thought there was a thunderstorm brewing above them and in the space between their arms and their joined palms." What a charged image to bring forward -- I love it. This is so nicely written. Thank you so much for your review on my story and for sharing this lovely story with us.

I love this. The Pam/Karen dimension is something that's pretty new to me but I absolutely love it -- I think there's something so heartbreaking about being in love with the same person and the way it connects you to your "competition" (for lack of a better word). You've written this just beautifully, showing us so clearly the way Pam and Karen feel about each other. It's a nice change from having two generic girls fighting over one generic guy -- this, I think, is something that happens more than you might expect.
Anyway, I'm rambling about this because I just finished working on a Pam/Karen piece and I'm feeling thoughtful about it. About your story I'd like to comment that the tone you always bring forward is just fabulous -- it's quiet and contemplative and really just about the connections these characters all have with each other. And you bring this all forward with so much subtlety... I think it demonstrates what a great hold you have on all the characters.
This is just wonderful. Thank you so much. :)

Oh lord. What an ending! Poor Jim. Well, not really, is he? More like lucky Jim. :)
I love this -- it's a perfect mix of awkwardness and fumbling and wonderful, anticipatory tension. I love Jim's line, "That's my desk," because there's really nothing else appropriate that he could say.
Awesome job with this. Fabulous.

This is just beautifully written. There were a few lines I wanted to pull out and tell you I loved but it always messes with the formatting and suffice it to say everything in this is just lovely. I love the whole bit about twos and fours, and the way Karen is still included but there's no bitterness. The way you describe their second kiss is just amazing -- I can't tell you how much I adore it. Oh! And the part where Pam "tackles and confronts" Jim after work... also wonderful.
Okay, I have to include my other favorite line because it was just so great: "It used to unsettle her that she knows and notices these things -- now she thinks it follows after the sky is blue and the grass is green."
Oh gosh, just marvelous. Thank you so much for this.
Author's Response: I don't think I ever told you how much I loved this review - but I do, I love this - thank you so much for pointing out what exactly you loved about this story!! And thanks for spending so much time on this, too. :):) Nothing like reading such an awesome review to kick-start my day.

Okay, so, I read this again. And I seriously, seriously still love it. A lot.
I love the way you structured it, parts of it in the present, part in the future, parts that are no tense at all. And I love all the bits about two and four and how they make up each other with all the adding and dividing and subtracting. I love that Jim hopes she wants to red flowers.
Mmmmm, yes. Definitely still amazing. <3

Hey! So re-reviewing is my thing, but I love that this was actually worth a re-review, much less a reread. You rock really, really hard, you know that? Just so you remember, see.

Wow. This was just great.
I love how you use the same line to begin every chapter -- it adds a real sense of connectedness (continuity?) to this story. You did a really nice job with all of the character voices in this piece, but I think my favorite was Roy because even though I obviously want Jim and Pam to end up together, I do have a little bit of a soft spot for Roy just because he's trying so hard now. It's just nice to read a story where he's not a villain -- he cares about Pam and that's nice to remember.
Your last line is killer. I love it.
Thank you so much!
Author's Response: No, thank you for reading and reviewing! I have such a soft spot for Roy nowadays as well...I even wrote a story about him, such is my love lately. :)
