Junior Seau committed suicide.  :(  Even though he played for our rivals, it was impossible not to like him - such a classy guy and a great, great player. RIP.

So sad about Seau. Growing up a USC fan I have always loved him. He was such a good ambassador for the game. It's sad that is seems he had such sorrow in his life. My prayers are with his family.

On a brighter note Jared Weaver just pitched a no hitter for the Angels. It's a nice night for what has been a slow start.

Go Kings Go!  Up 3-0 again.  Put 'em away!  Oh and in the other West series it's that wimp ex-Stars coach we ran out of town because he couldn't win in the playoffs  >:(  Uh we haven't been back since and they've made it at least twice (I think three times).

No-hitter for Weaver was nice.  I missed it tracking the Caps/NY Rangers game.  Sad for my bro as he stayed up late to watch only to have them lose in 3 OT.  Gotta get 'em Saturday.

First thing I thought about on Seau was concussions.  Didn't have any evidence at the time, but it sounds like my intuition was right.  A tragedy.  If any help on concussions comes from it then a small result from the tragedy is possible.

Big story today is reported ACL tear from Mariano Rivera of the Yankees.  No surprise that as a Rangers fan I don't like the Yankees.  But I've always respected him and Jeter (and while they were there Williams and Posada).  Guys they drafted and are unquestionably elite HOF players.  Lots of fans boo Jeter in starting lineup, less so when he comes to bat.  I don't cheer for him as he's on the other team, but what possible reason do I have to hate a guy who stayed with the team that drafted him?  Both guys play hard every day.  I'd love them to death if they'd spent the last almost 20 years in Texas.  Want to boo Teixeira and ARod Rangers fans?  Go right ahead.  Both bailed on our team and insulted it on the way out.

WOOHOO! I was at the Kings game tonight. The place was very loud. Kind of disappointed in a few jerky fans, but overall o.k. I unfortunately sat behind someone who felt he had to stand up every time the Kings had a scoring chance. >:( I would like to be more comfortable about them closing this out. I only can relax when that 4th game is won.

I was sorry to hear about Rivera. I have learned to tolerate him and even respect him for the great player he is. That doesn't mean I want the Angels to face him. :) Well after the great game last night the Angels were back to their ways. Zero runs once again. :-\

Coming out of lurkdom to say that as a lifelong Yankees fan, I'm devastated.  I thought I would be if this was indeed to be Mo's final season, but I thought I would have an entire season to prepare myself.

I know accidents happen (my father's passing a few months ago is much sadder proof of that) but it's frustrating to see the greatest closer of all time (IMO) taken out by something that wasn't a game-related injury (not that it would make it that much easier to take, but still).  I'm sure my Dad is griping about this as I type, and that brings a smile to my face.

I do hope that Mo heals for himself and gets back to the strength he had before the accident.  Whether or not he ever comes back to pitch is secondary to his health and well-being.  If this injury does end his career, I can say I had the pleasure of watching a true class act and supreme pitcher help my favorite team succeed for a very long time.

Unbelievable the Kings just swept the Blues! This has been both thrilling and nerve wracking to watch. I want to stay positive about this team, but history doesn't give me any hope they can keep going. ;)

The good news is there is no history for this kh :) No 8 seed ever took down the 1 and 2 seeds.  Just remember all my good will cheering for the Kings when the Rangers are playing deep into October after Anaheim has gone home for the season ;) That is if we can ever win a series again *shrugs* Oh and Pujols hit a HR so even more good news huh?

You got it! The way the Angels are playing I think you will be worrying about the A's or the Mariners first. ;)
I was lucky enough to go to both of the Stanley Cup final games in 93, but with the prices now and three kids still at home the chances are slim and none if we make it. I'm very nervous to play either the Coyotes or the Predators.

An absurd beast of a game from Hamilton last night.  Set the American League record for total bases, tied the MLB record for HR and set a career high in RBI.  He went 5 for 5 with 4 HR, one double and 8 RBI.  And since it was against Baltimore my bro up in DC got to watch on tv too!  Oh and Hamilton's last at bat Monday?  Also a two run HR.

Really wanted to win yesterday's Rangers game off CJ.  I can't even guess how long it's been since a guy started and lost on two consecutive days.  I'm guessing possibly 1800s.  Consolation prize was drilling Weaver for his first loss.

Going to be very busy at Staples Center huh?  Kings, Lakers and even Clippers using it over the next two+ weeks.  Congrats on another win :) Sorry to Callisto if you're a Nuggets fan.  Don't recall you talking about them, but sad for a team from your town to lose.

Also be very careful when typing that team name on iPhone!  Not sure what error I made (guessing i for u). Ended up with autocorrect that would be exceedingly inappropriate.

Yeah, I really enjoyed the game 5 and 6 wins, and I was hopeful they could pull it off last night, but I can't say I was surprised.  Now I guess I'll root for OKC, as I have always hated the Lakers.  (Sorry LA fans.) I still like the Celtics, too.  Unfortunately, once my team is out, I only pay passing attention to most of the other matchups till we get to the Finals.  Same with hockey. I gotta say, though, Kings are on fire! Wouldn't mind seeing them make a run for it.

Yea it's hard being a Kings fan in LA. The Lakers dominate most all the talk. Even the Clippers are hardly mentioned and for the Kings and them it's such a big deal they are doing this well.
I made my family go to a sports bar for dinner tonight to watch the Kings game. It was fun but ended up being quite expensive. My oldest had some friends join in the fun. :)

Rangers are listing lately.  Bugs me they aren't racking up more wins against dregs like KC.  But in other news GO KINGS GO!  Three straight 3-0 leads!  My brother noticed that if they face NY it'll be the hardest possible playoff schedule (regarding all 1 seeds, etc as historical equals).  And NY would have the easiest of all time.  LA would go through 1,2,3,1 and NY would play 8,7,6,8.  Weird huh?

I know there is only a few hockey fans here but I will tell you my tale. I went in to my son yesterday at 10:00 a.m. and said let's drive to AZ for the game. A half hour later, 3 stub hub tickets purchased near the ice seats (half of what Staples charges), we are on our way for the six hour drive. My son invited a friend so I got to enjoy some nice quality time with 2 great guys. :) The game itself was fantastic, the fact the Kings won and are going to the Stanley Cup unbelievable, the only bummer was the fans were pretty classless and it didn't have a good end. Six hours later we are home and watching every replay we can find on TV. ;D These are the memories you will cherish forever.

For the record Brown did not hit that guy knee on knee and it was very loud, we did NOT hear the whistle for offside. >:(

That's awesome, kh! What an experience. I'm always a little sad for the series winners when they take it in the opposing arena - it has to be more fun for them to have their own fans screaming in excitement rather than a stadium full of sullen, sad (and let's face it, sometimes mean/classless) folks.

Should be a great Finals no matter who they end up playing.  :)

Well sorry you had to see the only game we won.  In news you did see (if you stayed through the 7th) the longest HR in any MLB game this year.  Nellie just absolutely destroyed that ball and nearly cleared the hill out there in left center.

I tell you this team is in huge trouble.  The lead will evaporate very quickly.  Anaheim has turned things around nicely.  And we can't even bother to get out of our own way.  Lost both of those games on just stupidity and your guys taking advantage of said stupidity.  Not bothering to throw the ball when you field it because if you think it hit a player apparently that means the play is over.  Or making three plus errors in a game.  Or not running more on Wilson and instead just enjoying GIDP after GIDP.  I went to the game against Seattle where we gave up 21 runs.  It was literally the earliest I've ever left a game and the earliest I've quit scoring a game.  We left in the 6th and my friends wanted to leave in the third.  That's when I gave up trying to score the game when it got to 12-0 or something like that.  Spent the next three innings waiting for Montero to complete a cycle (didn't happen) and researching obscure facts like "earliest cycle" (Mike Lansing in 2000 did it in just four innings) and biggest loss in Rangers history (couldn't find that but did find the 30-3 win over Baltimore from a few years ago).  Oswalt worked two scoreless innings in his first rehab start in Round Rock (I went with my dad to see the game).  That makes him better than two of our five starters based on their last start.

In other news...one more game!  16-2 would have to be about the best playoff run of all time I think.  And 10-0 can't be far behind for a road record.  Now go out and get it done!

Yes, we stayed till the end and man that was some home run. My son who hates baseball was impressed with that. :) I was mentioning to my husband how you have cooled off. We still have troubles of our own. It's nice to have a race though.

In hockey news, we went down to LA yesterday during the day to get a glimpse of all the hoopla. Very fun, got a picture with Barry Melrose and had a quick interview with a local news show. We made in on tv for about 15 seconds. Very fun day even if there is no way we can go to the game tomorrow. Nose bleeds are going for $1,300.00. >:( It's been quite a ride though.

It is surprising the Spurs turned so quickly.  10 wins to open the playoffs, then four straight losses to exit.

And I guess the Kings just really don't like game four.  Or maybe they wanted another chance to find Hoffa.  Hope they get it done Saturday!

Oh, I missed the hockey game.  Well, the Devils are a good team, I guess they were bound to win one. I hope the Kings get it done on Saturday too (although I always feel sorry for the winning team when it's the visitors - it has to be so much more fun to do it in front of your own crowd instead of a bunch of sullen antagonists.)

That was quite a performance. 1 road loss in the playoffs, knocked off the top three seeds - wow! Talk about well-deserved.  Congrats to your Kings, kh!!

Don't even talk to me about baseball.  The Rockies were swept this weekend. At home.  Third worst record in MLB.  :(

Thanks guys! I am very happy right now, 26 years as a fan is a long time. This team game me lots of joy this year. I told my husband last night even if they would have lost it I was going to the airport after their flight home. They deserved the support of the fans.

I'm glad you didn't have to come to that decision.  I just couldn't do it for the Rangers last October.  We did stay after the last out in '10 and cheer one last "Let's go Rangers" chant when they lost game 5 to SF.  But that was a decisive loss and their first ever WS.  Being soooo close last year I just didn't want to think about it.

CONGRATS to the LA Kings and their fans.  Tremendous Stanley Cup playoff run.  Very exciting.

I'm not the greatest hockey fan anymore but while I was growing up I used to watch a lot of games and go to Maple Leaf Gardens as much as possible to get autographs and watch games.  We have not had a winner in TO for 47 years.  My family is full of die hard hockey fans (Leafs and Canadians).  Since I don't follow hockey very closely in the regular season my Kings pick at the start of the playoffs was not taken too seriously.  Great victory for the team and I loved watching all of the post game interviews on CBC last night.  Say what you will about professional athletes, hockey players are a very fun loving and hard working bunch of guys with a real 'team' mentality.

Okay, now on to baseball.

rahenson, I feel good about the Rangers chances again this year but they do have some serious competition in the AL.  I'm feeling the Nationals are really talented and equally important, focused and cohesive this year.  So far this season there are some great races in both leagues which have resulted in some very exciting games to watch.  Drew Doughtey and will continue to support our Blue Jays even though the AL East is super tight so far.

My last hockey post. I was able to go to the parade and rally yesterday. What a great end to such a fun playoff run for LA. I'm actually really proud of the way the city responded and celebrated this win.I heard only 4 arrest were made Monday night.
I don't know if it's been talked about nationally but Quick let some language fly during the rally that didn't get censored. He had been celebrating a bit too much and I'm sure in hindsight he wouldn't do it again. It was funny, but I can understand those who maybe didn't find it appropriate. It definitely got a reaction from the stands. Never been to any parade or rally before, it's a great way for the players to interact and thank the fans. LA hockey is not talked about much but take it from someone who has gone to games year after year to watch horrible teams, we are passionate here about our Kings. ;D

Awesome, kh.  One of our sports radio guys made a smart remark the other day that the Clippers probably have more fans than the Kings in LA.  I'm glad to hear your hockey team is well supported!

Cute about Quick.  I haven't seen or heard anything about that, but it always amuses me when people are horrified by colorful language. It makes me think of "A Christmas Story" where Ralphie's mom is demanding where he heard that word! And he ends up telling on a friend when in fact he heard it from his own father every day for the last 11 years!  :D

How sad are we?  The Olympic Games started on Friday and nary a comment on this thread.

I'm not really invested in any of it and Canada certainly doesn't have many strong medal chances (only 2 bronze so far) but these athletes have worked very hard for their chance to compete in this forum.  Respect and admiration for their dedication and efforts.

Sorry Americans but of the 4 channels I can watch the games on, NBC is by far the worst.  What is wrong with NBC and when will they turn it around?

NBC is getting slammed for their coverage. I guess I'm not that picky when it comes to watching. I just go to all the NBC channels (I get 3) and look what is on. I can pretty much watch all of them for a while. As far as the delay goes. Not many people would watch live so I understand them delaying. It's the nature of the beast now with twitter, facebook and every other media outlet that will instantly fill you in.

I've watched a few events so far, and I'm most impressed by the opening ceremony. I loved how British it was, and I thought it was a brilliant move of Danny Boyle to have some British humour on display as well. It certainly showed that they didn't take themselves too seriously.

I'm in Norway, so we watch everything live. (We always watch the Olympics live regardless of where they are. I still remember getting up in the middle of the night to watch the Nagano games in 1998.) I cannot believe NBC is using this outdated and ancient model of airing events. Seriously? You don't think people will know already, what with newspapers, facebook, twitter etc? So weird.  ??? I also thought it was extremely disrespectful of NBC to cut the British tribute to the victims of 7/7 from the opening ceremony.

Anyway, we don't have a lot of chances at winning gold medals - the winter Olympics are our forte - but I've watched quite a bit of handball. Handball might be a tiny sport compared to all the other sports in the summer Olympics, but it's one of the most popular sports in this country.

I also ended up watching synchronized diving today, and I was absolutely horrified by the ugly German bathing suits. Yikes. :o

Replaying sports isn't just an Olympics thing here in the U.S.  Lots of regional sports channels replay a day baseball game that night or the next morning.  I guess they figure (and based on ratings they're right) that people will still watch how something happened even if they know what happened.

A friend of mine just moved to Denmark, and posted yesterday that there was an inexplicably heavy coverage of Danish badminton. That she'd never seen so much badminton news in her life.  So I had to chuckle this morning at the scandal - seriously, throwing games?! I never even knew badminton was an Olympic sport. To me it's always been something you did at a backyard barbecue.  :D

The Danes are really into badminton and tennis, and the referee (who first thought something weird was going on during the women's badminton matches) was Danish.

Speaking of rather unknown sports, we won an incredibly surprising silver medal in fencing yesterday. The guy literally came out of nowhere, and in the matter of a couple of hours the entire country went nuts over fencing. Almost 20% (!!) of the entire population watched the live fencing finale last night, lol.  :D

rahenson1 how many more games do the Rangers have with the A's? They just keep surprising me. The Angels are finally taking advantage of some soft games, but are having trouble capitalizing on the wins. It's a really fun season with all the close races.

Bummed out by the possible lock out for hockey. I believe that will be a huge mistake for the sport. :(

Not looking at the schedule I'd guess six or seven with the A's and Angels each.  I know our last home series is versus Anaheim and the last series is at Oakland.  I'd guess the A's come here and we go to Anaheim on another trip.  Wish we had Boston still.  That seems like three guaranteed wins right now.  They are an absolute train wreck.  Not Bobby's fault entirely, but he has to go and probably before season's end.

I only found out about the possible lockout for NHL a couple of weeks ago.  Frankly if they don't play til November I won't care.  Even my parents finally dropped their ticket plan.  Long time since the Stars were relevant in Dallas.

10 days to go in the season.  Things are settling down in the NL.  Congrats to Nats, Reds and Giants fans.  Two divisions down and the Nats are guaranteed at least a WC spot.  Last spot down to a few teams trying to catch the Cards.  AL is more open.  O's/Yanks one game apart with each in very good WC shape, Sox/Tigers also one game apart.  Rangers are in very good shape, A's in position for a WC.  Angels and Rays hoping for a white hot finish to run someone down.  Time to lock it down and get our trophy Rangers!  Three wins against Oakland over the seven games and either one more win or one more A's loss should get it done.

At this point my husband is hoping for a sweep (I stress the word hoping) by either the Rangers or A's. The worst part of being that WC is all is guarantees you is one more game. Lots of hard work and stress for one extra day of baseball. It's been fun though. :)

As a lifelong Yankee fan, I am both excited and anxious.  I love when fall baseball is like this, but I also wish they kept that 10 game lead they had and we knew already that the division was their's.  Fall baseball is just all kinds of awesome.  Just yesterday, I was happy the Red Sox won and that never happens!

Even on the last day of last year my Red Sox fan friend wouldn't root for NY to beat TB.  Said he wanted them both to win and then have Bos beat TB in a one game playoff.

For the Angels if they sweep their series there almost isn't a bad result.  With a split they are just 1 game back of Oakland and if Texas wins the series then they can catch or pass Oakland.  Oakland wins and they can get within four of Texas and then play Texas three straight games to get it to one.  But if they don't sweep their series then they are very quickly going to run out of schedule.  Texas may have the chance next week to play Oakland into or out of the playoffs.  Kinda like NY and Philly did with TB and Atl last year. The difference is Texas definitely gets the WC with best record and NY definitely didn't.

Anyone watching the World Series?  So far the Giant juggernaut continues to roll.

I was sure the Tigers would dominate tonight but their bats are cold against Barry Zito to this point and Justin Verlander had an off night.  Seems like the 5 day break did not do much for the Tigers mojo.

There has been some very exciting baseball played this post season.

Also, love that MLB is so involved with SU2C.

Yeah I have watched about all of about every game.  My pick of Det in 6 is in serious trouble.  And it is nearly impossible for my MVP pick of Verlander to work.

Congratulations to R.A. Dickey on his 2012 National League Cy Young award.  The man has lived a challenging life and chosen a road less travelled by major league pitchers only to emerge at the top of his field.

Very impressive and most well deserved recognition.

His is a story of perseverence, hard work and hope.  I like it.

I wouldn't know about any other sport stories other than Phil Jackson is not the new Laker coach. I feel back for the new coach, he is getting slammed in every media (as well as former Laker players) before ever coaching a game. I hope he proves them wrong and the Lakers do well. I'm not even a fan of basketball but feel bad for the guy.

Toddy is when we find out whether Trout or Cabreara gets MVP.  Not a bad choice either way.  Both had seasons absolutely deserving of the award.  For the Triple Crown I have to go with Migs.

Also it is the epitome of the disaster the Rangers season became that they (and as it turns out every NL team) would have taken Dickey in a heartbeat.  I saw his first MLB knuckleball start.  It went very badly.  Nothing but respect for him and his development.

rahenson, you make me wish I had something to say about baseball.  Sorry, I can't chime in on that as I have so little knowledge.  :)

Football, though. Broncos are amazing me this year. I mean, we knew it was Peyton Manning and that great things might happen, but it's like the whole team just kicked it up a couple dozen notches. It's been great fun to watch!

I miss hockey.  :(  It was pretty great to see Joe Sakic get inducted into the HOF a couple days ago though. His speech was wonderful. What a fantastic, classy guy. I'm glad he hasn't left Denver since he retired.   <3

Yeah there's a big hole in the nightly schedule where the Stars should be.  They have been terrible the last few years but it's something to watch.  Never had anything bad to say about Sakic.  Modano I think was inducted into the US hockey hall of fame recently.  We are understandably just as enamored with Mike as Denver is with Joe.

Glad Peyton is doing so well in Denver.  For one thing he's on my fantasy team and has me in first place ;) But I've been a fan of his for a long time.  I love how he calls the game like quarterbacks from years gone by.  No offensive coordinator there.  Just him and the defense.

This.  After years and years of meh quarterbacks with some talent but no real brilliance (and one season of a guy with a lot of charisma and luck but not even that much talent),  it's fantastic to watch. We had Elway for years and he was so exciting and great to watch, but Peyton is a whole different breed. I'm loving it. And he seems like such a genuinely nice dude, too.

As much as I enjoyed Tebow with Denver last year watching Peyton is a thing of beauty. I am so happy for him after his surgeries and all the drama that surrounded that. The fact that I love the Browns AND can still root for the Broncos says a lot. (I still can't watch replays of The Drive and The Fumble). Not sure you guys are old enough to remember those. ;)

Speaking of Tebow, anyone care to weigh in with their opinions of his saga? I'm biased and do think it was a terrible fit. He may not be a great quarterback, but I believe he can help some of the struggling teams out there.

Big day in my house, hubby is a UCLA fan, I'm a USC fan. It's fun having the game mean something again after many years not!

I am old, because yes, I watched both the Drive and the Fumble as they happened.  :)  I just read this cute John Grisham book called "Playing for Pizza" about a backup quarterback who takes the field in the AFC Championship when the starter goes down - the team is up by 17 - and he throws three interceptions in a row to lose the game in the final five minutes.  His team? Cleveland. Opposition? The Broncos. :D  I laughed so hard at that, clearly he remembers... (Anyway this QB is so shunned he ends up picking up a gig as the starter in Italy.  It was a fun read.)

I feel bad for Tebow.  It seems that he should have a place in the NFL. At the same time, I only kind of feel bad for him because he has refused to accept that he is not really QB material; he should be a fullback. You have to be able to throw the ball. The NFL is no place for the option QB; defenses are too fast and you are gonna get killed. That said, it really was magical watching some of those games last year, so it just seems a shame that the Jets haven't bothered to find a way to use him.

I remember The Drive.  I actually cried for the Browns after The Fumble.  Woukd have been about ten at the time.  It just seemed so cruel to be beaten twice in a row like that.  Think it was my first sports emotion and probably last sports cry.  I damn near snapped a remote in half when Dallas lost to Anaheim in five OT I think it was back in '03.  And as for the Rangers last year I was too shocked to react any other way to game six.

There is some hand wringing in Dallas.  But no one thinks we should have dropped 125 over 5 for him.  Guess he plays RF with Trout in CF.  you will either be terrible or have a 300 million payroll in about three years when he and Pujols start breaking down.  Like to add an OF like Bourn.  Other than that I take my chances as is against Oak and Ana.

Well let's see.  I like our Berkman signing but it is not a universal opinion.  Some are still bitter he rejected us a couple of years ago as not legitimate contenders.  He has since apologized.

Sorry about the Broncos Callisto.  Thought they were strong favorites to win.  Can't understand why you don't have Manning try to pass for first down up 35-28 with two minutes left.  Not as if defense was playing great all day.

Hockey is back.  Which I guess beats watching the Mavs suck.  Though I have no reason to believe the Stars will stop sucking any time soon.

Right? Dear God, so many terrible decisions and so much poor execution. I was afraid this would happen - I was kind of hoping they would lose a game down the stretch, so they would remember how it felt.  Totally disgusted with the play calling at the end.  And I don't know, it looks like those who were dismissive of the "Peyton can't play in the cold" were right to be concerned.  He threw a bunch of balls into the dirt yesterday and looked like he was afraid to pass.

Sigh. On the up side, now I don't have to care what happens. Go Houston!

I totally agree with you Callisto. Horrible play calling AND why not go for a field goal with 3 time outs and .35 seconds? I knew they were going to lose. I told my husband around week 14 or 15, Denver needs to not go into the playoffs on a long winning streak. :(

The Kings gave away replica rings to every fan in attendance last night. My son and girlfriend went and I have to say I am quite impressed with the quality. I was expecting more of a cracker jack look.

Not much talk here lately so I will ask who are you all rooting for in the Superbowl? I honestly could care less about this one. Not a fan of either team so it doesn't matter one bit to me who wins.

My brother lives in Maryland so I guess Baltimore.  But he grew up in Dallas too and he is not a Ravens fan.  It would bug the Washington (not calling them by their name anymore) fans I guess.

Wonder if the Stars gave away miniature 11th place (or wherever we ended up) rings.  They are settling in right where I thought they would.

I'm not overly invested in either team in the Superbowl.

I don't like to choose this way but it would bother me quite a bit if the Ravens were to win since I can't abide Ray Lewis.  I fear that is what the story will become all about if Baltimore wins.

Even though we have an NHL season I can't get too excited about it.  Maybe once the playoffs start...

I am counting the days until the MLB season begins.  The Blue Jays have had a very avtive and promising off season which makes me more than hopeful for an exciting season.  I can't believe we got RA Dickey.  I know he may not have been the most exciting player to watch in Texas rahenson but after reading his book I am fascinated and oh so impressed with him as a man.  Such courage, determination qand hopefulness.  I don't like to put athletes on a pedestal because of great achievements in their chosed fields but it is fantastic to see his success.

I guess I am for the Ravens, although to be honest I don't like either team. When in doubt, though, I support my conference. And there's the bonus that if the Ravens win, then at least the Broncos can say they lost to the best team that year.  :P

Avalanche are off to another rocky start and it's not going to help that Landeskog, our awesome 19 year old captain, is out indefinitely with leg and head injuries.  :(

Yes he was just another guy here.  Someone to pitch in a blowout.  But we got him to start with the knuckleball so our front office can take comfort in the success he had with the Mets.  I don't know how much money you could have won off of 2007 RAH on the bet that not having RA Dickey would end our two year run as AL champs.

RAD really credits Buck Showalter and Orel Hershiser with his move toward being a knuckleballer.  It's amazing how long it takes to master that pitch in a way that makes you effective in the major leagues.  The Rangers were instrumental in guiding him.

That's what makes it so hard for me.  I was so excited when he came to the Yankees because of the level of talent he was bringing.  I had to listen to many fellow Yankee fans say how he wasn't good for the team, wouldn't fit in with the team, etc.  When he was slumping and all the fans were on his back, I'd give him a pass, saying that even the best players slump.  And now he's just proving everyone else right.

In RA Dickey's book the only player he mentioned by name in a somewhat unfavourable way was ARod.  When they played together in Texas, ARod failed to give him the game ball from his first MLB victory - threw it to a fan.  Not a bad thing per say but it did illustrate how little awareness and thought ARod has for his team mates.

It is difficult not to expect our sports heros. especially those who play for 'our' team to be good people.

Ah but spring training started today.  And opening day is less than seven weeks away.  I think we've got a real doozy of a race shaping up this year in the AL West.  And the AL East.   If I had to guess right now I'd say Detroit will lead the league in wins due to the utter lack of competition in their division.  Maybe the Sox are solid again.  Maybe the Royals finally step up.  But it's entirely possible teams win the East and West without going much past 90 wins.  That and the Astros are going to be very, very bad.  I'd guess 100+ losses easy.  Maybe 110.
Title: Re: Sports #3: I will use your talents come baseball season, my friend.

Having the Astros in the AL West this season should boost the wins for the rest of the reams in that division.  Rangers and Angels look great and somehow the A's always find a way to be competative.  I don't have a good feeling for how well the Mariners will perform this year yet.

We usually always have at least 3 very strong teams in the AL and this year is no different.  The Orioles outperformed all expectations in 2012, in part due to the weaker than expected seasons of the Red Sox and Blue Jays.  The Rays and Yankees will be tough competition again and the changes the Jays made this off season should make them a favourite in the east.

I cannot wait for April 2nd.

As for Hockey - so far so good for the Toronto Maple Leafs.

ETA:  Michael Bourn is now a Cleveland Indian - the AL Central just got a little bit more interessting.

The Stars already killed me.  My friend is actually somehow more into them this year than me.  I have their games on more often than not, but I have missed entire games not knowing they were on.  And even when they are on they do not command full attention.  They're actually playing at LA tomorrow and I can tell you now at best I will see one period of that game.  I'm not staying up til midnight for that.  If they stumble their way into the playoffs AND make some noise that could get me interested.  But I'm not investing passion in them until they deliver something.

If you stayed up you would have had a good night. The Kings decided to forgo defense on many occasions and my Quick of last year has disappeared. :-\ I have known for YEARS that to win a cup you need a hot goalie. I am seeing some doubts about that with Quick. He had back surgery in the off season and is having some long term problems still. It's such a tight race playing the same teams over and over it will be an interesting push this season.

Couldn't disagree more.  What is classless is playing five years in a town then dumping on it as you walk out the door.  Three million people went through the turnstiles the last two years.  And if he wants a baseball town he chose poorly.  Anaheim is at best no better a baseball town than Dallas.  Plus you have had to watch him swing impotently at pitches for four games.  We saw him do it for four months.  They booed him when he wasted chance after chance in the wild card game.  So it isn't just that he left and came back.  Young probably won't get these kind of boos if he ever comes back.  Even CJ didn't get them that bad last year.  Only ARod got stronger boos.  And I am not going to lie - it was very nice to see him strike out, us rally off the Angel bullpen and him make an out in the 9th for the second straight game.

I understand where you are coming from. I just don't care enough about the players to be that passionate I guess. I learned many many years ago, players come and go. You just have to like your team. We will see come Sept. who faired better in that move I guess. I think the Angels have more head problems than ability problems though.

Basketball playoffs started today.  Any takers there?  I only barely watch basketball as it is and with the Mavs out of the playoffs I can't name the teams that did make it and have no clue at all which teams are playing each other and which should win.

Hockey playoffs about two weeks away.  Stars in 10th but still with a shot.  Apparently they have played better after trading all the people who could play.  So I guess you give Nieuwendyk enough trades and he wins some eventually just based on the law of averages.  I have seen bits of their games on occasion when it doesn't conflict with Ranger baseball.  Even if the Stars get in they will be drilled silly by the Blackhawks.  It is very unlikely they finish higher than 8th and the Hawks have already clinched the #1 seed and have dominated Dallas.  As the Super Fans said on SNL about the Bulls many years ago I would almost predict the Hawks win the hypothetical series in 3 with Dallas conceding rather than suffer the embarassment of another thrashing on their ice.

You know I'm ready for the Hockey playoffs. The Kings probably will have the 4th or 5th seed, playing possible the Sharks, Wild, Stars,... it's a close race. I don't want any part of the Stars or Sharks. I know you have to play your enemy at some time. I prefer not to have to the first round. I actually don't have great expectations even if we won the cup last year.

The basketball playoffs are always lowest much watch sports. Don't care who wins, but we catch bits and pieces.

Very slow start for the Angels, but apparently we needed to Tigers to visit. Lots of issues though and don't expect them to give the Rangers a run for it this year.

I am glad the Kings won that in OT.  It was enough if a sham that we got one point.  A goal disallowed for LA that should have counted and a goal allowed for Dallas that was flagrantly illegal.  Apology to the Red Wings, CBJ and Wild.  Hope that fraud point doesn't cost you anything.

Also I am angry the Angels scheduled Wed game as a night game.  Texas is at Minnesota the next day.  They pull stuff like this every year.  But then it makes it that much easier to root for their failure.

Thanks rahenson1 I was wonderiing what you thought of the officiating last night. My son said the NHL doesn't have very good accountability for the refs. Do you know if that is the case?

Also who does the scheduling for the MLB? Does each team do their own? I guess I am starting to understand why you were so glad to get rid of Hamilton. He is really struggling. I will say he at least has made some nice catches. ;)

The teams have some control over their schedules.  National tv can trump them.  For example our season opener got moved up to Sunday night by ESPN and Fox will move games around for their weekly telecast.  Generally teams have an agreement for getaway day games.  Obviously we don't do that in summer as teams would rather get on a plane at 1:00 a.m. than stand on the field in the sun at 1:00 p.m. when it's 100+.  For whatever reason Anaheim has stuck it to us the last few years by having night games on multiple occasions when we leave to go east (usually home but this time even worse as it's way up to Minnesota).

I don't know much about accountability for NHL refs.  I think they get video with some frequency.  Both calls they missed and trends in the league.  So if they are calling too much of a penalty (or more often not enough) they'll get footage from around the league.  A montage say of things that were called that the league doesn't want called or a collection of fouls that weren't called.

Again it's not so much that I would have refused to have Hamilton.  I just don't think he's worth anywhere near 25 mil for the next five years.  For the right price you can deal with his shortcomings.  For that money he needs to be basically perfect.  Pujols something like 10 years ago for example.  I just can't see paying that much for a guy with serious flaws.  He'll have a hot streak where he hits 8 homers in a week and you'll be happy for that week.

I don't care about Hamilton one way or the other. I just watch the "team". My days of liking a particular player are long gone. Now if you would have asked me in the 70's I would have given just about anything to keep the Dodger infield intake forever. :) Especially Ron Cey!

When the Rangers were bad from about 2000-08 I would often have the game on in the summer because nothing else is on.  But I would read or go out to eat without caring about missing part of the game.  About how I treat the Stars now.  Still watch but don't go out of my way like I do for Texas.

Congrats on surviving the Sharks kh.  Tonight you find out if the Kings are off to the Windy City, or sticking around to welcome the guys from Motor City.  Plus the Angels are coming around.  I think Nolan Ryan and Charlie Hough are beginning throwing programs to join the Rangers rotation if their injury trend continues  ::) We had a rookie who didn't make the opening day roster as the #3 starter for a while and now we upgraded to a different rookie who did make the opening day rotation as new #3.

I must come on and give props to the Kings. They didn't roll over tonight after being down 0-2. Congrats to the Blackhawks for winning. I am just so happy we tied it up and didn't go down with the nagging feeling of that noncall on Williams to put them up 3-2. I am not a sore loser, just hate to see a controversial call or noncall decide a big game. Should be a good SCF. I have a feeling the hockey Gods are with the Bruins this year.

Props to the Kings.  I really thought they were going to win that game after Richards tied it up.

What makes you think the hockey gods are with the Bruins?  We barely got by the Leafs.  Rangers had totally tuned out their coach I believe, and the Penguins came in way overconfident and allowed us to get up 2-0 easily.  The only advantage I think we have right now over the Hawks is our goaltending.  Hawks are feeling it too, and now Kaner is heating up.  Hopefully our guy Seguin starts hitting the net too, but Chicago has all the offensive weapons the Penguins have and play much better defense.  Crawford can be shaky, but if you chase him, then you have Emery.  I had him on my fantasy team this year and he helped me a lot more than King Henrik during the season.

It should be a good series.  I'm much calmer about the whole thing compared to 2 years ago.  I guess having finally won a Cup after a 39 year drought does that.  I'm going to Game 4 and I also picked up tickets for Game 6 just in case it's played.  Can't wait!

Hit the Hawks and you have the advantage. Especially Kane, he doesn't like the contact. STOP Bickell with a few hits and you will definitely be better off. I know we lost and everyone has injuries, but I believe if the Kings had faced the Hawks first we would have been better off. We had some pretty bad injuries piled up. I told my husband you have to stay healthy and have a good goaltender to finish it off. I'm looking forward to the SCF. If it's not too personal how much are prices there for the finals? Our tickets were sooo much cheaper this year. We had a lot of bandwagon fans jump on thinking the Kings would skate through again. Then when it got tough they weren't as anxious to go. We could have gone to games 3 & 4 in the third round for as cheap as $70.00. Good luck!

I don't usually frequent the Sports thread, but the Hawks being in the SCF has gotten me to come take a peek. I have to say that I was somewhat stunned by the Bruins defense last night. Besides the Blackhawks I haven't watched many games this season, playoff or otherwise, and last night was just brutal, long and exhausting. It seemed like the Bruins were just EVERYWHERE, blocking EVERYTHING! Hopefully the Hawks will let this victory build a little momentum, but that whole game made me nervous!

We really need Toews to start scoring. Like, now. (My daughter calls him her "future husband" -- too cute. She's 14.  laughingicon)

I know they are national games and all, but can I find someone to punch in the face each time either Fox or ESPN runs footage of the 2011 World Series?  And a double barreled salute to Tim McCarver for commenting that his two favorite sports moments as a broadcaster were Kirby Puckett's 10th inning game 6 HR to force game seven against Atlanta and 2011 game 6.  My team was on the losing end of both those series.  But at least I could laugh at him for getting the ALCS MVP wrong.  He credited Cruz with winning the 2010 award when that went to Hamilton.

I do feel your pain. To this day I will not watch any footage of John Elway breaking my heart as a Cleveland Browns fan or Joe Morgan hitting a homerun on the last game of the year MANY years ago to knock the Dodgers out of the playoffs. Even though I'm now an Angel fan I just can't bear to rewatch that.  On the other hand don't want to admit how many times this past year I have rewatched the Kings winning the cup. ;) It's sure going to be a long summer for me after this next week. The Angels are just not watchable this year. :(

Hope you all have fun on Sunday. Like I've said before baseball is not really on tv much this season. We are watching the college world series. Pat Valaika on UCLA grew up here and my boys went to school with him. It makes it fun to watch.

Hey kh remember back in March when we were looking at this Rangers/Angels series as a critical one heading into the trade deadline?  And here we are with the Angels dumping a reliever for a minor leaguer and sending Pujols to the DL.  Meanwhile the Rangers are drifting quickly back to Seattle and Anaheim and could easily tumble to fourth within the next two weeks or less.  Oh and we're discussing trading our all-star closer.  Don't need a closer when you don't score runs.  Can't win -1 to 0.

I would say the shortest answer for the Rangers is injuries.  At one point they had their #1 (Harrison), 2 (Darvish), 4 (Lewis), 5 (Ogando), 6 (Tepesch) starters on the DL together.  Berkman was signed to be DH and he got reinjured and hasn't been effective.  They have not hit well with men in scoring position (failing even to score runners from third with useful outs when early in innings).  They've had some offense injuries in addition to Berkman with 2B Kinsler, 1B Moreland and C Pierzynski as the more prominent.  A's have played great ball and fully earned their robust lead.  But leads in July and August aren't useful in themselves as we can fully attest.

Rahenson 1, well I threw in the towel last night. I didn't watch the game, but came in the room and told my husband the Angels would lose in the bottom of the 9Th again. It took a little longer, but same scenario. My son called me a fair weathered fan as I announced "I am done" for the season. I look at it as my right as a fan to not support a franchise that is a hot mess. :-\ The owner has made nothing but bad choices in his hiring and firing. Now the odd thing about this is how can I be a Cleveland Brown fan for over 25 years and not give up on them? I can't figure it out myself. I think my love for baseball has dwindled slowly and having such a long season it's too hard to stay with a team that is not in the race.

Well if Tuesday night didn't do it maybe Wednesday did.  First time in Ranger history to have three straight walk off HR.  Still a lot of ground to make up, but we get Oakland this weekend so hopefully we win the series and keep closing on them.  Most of our injured pitchers are either healthy or possibly close.  Two are starting minor league games now trying to go through basically spring training in August and the third could be pitching minor league games within the week.  They may run out if season before everyone is healthy.  Even when the Rangers were bad I would have the game on in the background and if it was a good game I would watch more closely.  I guess even on a bad team I still enjoyed the games they played well.  Like how on a 4-12 football team you might enjoy the four wins even though you know they aren't going to the playoffs.

Tonight is the first televised "game" of the season. It's called Family Night and it's really nothing more than a glorified practice. During a TV interview, rookie Loyce Means said it would be fun practicing in front of 7,000 fans. The reporter corrected him by saying, "No. That would be 70,000 fans." Means looked as if he were being punked. Seventy thousand for practice? Yup. Silly rookie.  ;)

All tickets are 10 bucks apiece so it *is* affordable for an entire family. Not a surprise—all tickets are sold out.

Best thing about the game is that you know the Packers will always be the winner. (http://i131.photobucket.com/albums/p312/neverbeendone/smileys/football.gif)

Alright time to break radio silence.  Two weeks ago the team was in free fall and little I would have typed would have passed through the censors ;)  Obviously our season is now done.  I would say that although not happy with the end I am not disgusted with it as I was last year.  I think they played about as well to slightly better than I thought they would.  In March I thought they were about a 90 win team.  That was before Berkman was worse than I thought, before Harrison missed all but two starts, and Lewis never pitched in a MLB game.  So all that in mind I would say they were better than I would have expected had you told me all those things would happen in March.  The bullpen was much stronger than I thought they would be.  That's probably where most of the gap I would have predicted disappeared to.  The good news is I will get about $1200 back from the Rangers for all the playoff tickets I paid for but won't get to use.  That is less on the credit card I have to find a way to pay.

If you ran across someone in an unusually pleasant mood today there's a good chance they are a Boston sports fan.  Hard to remember a better non-championship day for a town.  Brady with a game winning TD pass with five seconds left to knock the Saints from the unbeaten.  Then Papi with a grand slam in the 8th and a walkoff to win game 2 after trailing 5-0.  My friend is one of those Boston fans and he had written off the Sox game as we watched Redskins/Cowboys.  That game ended just before the Sox game.

Because baseball season never really ends...My Rangers made quite the noteworthy trade.  Big risk in Fielder's salary, but I really like the move.  We needed a spot for Profar and Fielder is much better than Moreland.  Also a good trade for Det.  They get much better at second and can move Cabrera back to first where he is a good defender rather than a liability.

And kh I see the Angels are continuing their gameplan of trolling the Rangers.  First CJ and Pujols then Hamilton and now Freese.  Guess he'll be better than whatever you were rolling out there the last couple of months last year after trading Callaspo.  Bourjos was a guy you could afford to move.  So that's a solid add on your part.  Not really sure why the Cards make this trade.  Bourjos is a better CF than Jay so I guess they plan to move Jay to RF to replace Beltran.  I've also read they are moving Craig to RF to make a spot for Adams at 1B.  If that is so I guess Jay is their backup OF.

There is some wild talk here about Texas signing Cano to play 2B and trading Profar for David Price from Tampa.  I don't think the team will ramp the payroll up that far.  But as it is not my money I am all for it.  You get me Cano and Price and we better destroy the rest of the league and get me my title.

Yes, apparently the Angels like to take players that our declining and roll the dice. The pitcher (can't remember his name) was an o.k. move. We are in desperate need of any pitching help.
I agree that if you complete that rumor, the Rangers should win it all. I like Fielder and even with the Rangers being our rival I will wish him lots of success in Texas (unless he is playing the Angels.). ;D

I think we got the best four teams for the conference championships in football.  These should be two great games.  I am pulling for Peyton to get another ring.  A multiple SB winner cements his place in the very elite of NFL history.  Combines the stats that Marino and Favre put up and the rings of Brady, Montana, Aikman, Bradshaw.  Denver needs to play better than they did today.  He really carried them through fumbles, drops and poor special teams play.  If the rest of the team played to form that thing was 35-0 after three quarters and they don't have to sweat out the last 5-10 minutes.  As for Seahawks/49ers that is going to be some nasty, entertaining football.

What do you guys think about changing the playoff seeding rules?  Some have suggested more teams but unless they go to 16 teams I don't know how they do it.  I have also heard about stripping division champions of their automatic home games in round one.  So this year SF would have been at home and NO too instead of going to play worse teams in GB and Philly.  You win your division you get in, but you have to earn your home game.  A few years ago it was NO that was the victim again and lost to 7-9 Seattle in Seattle because they were a division champ.

I think having a home field advantage is a great incentive to keeping teams playing in top form for the fans, even though their place in the play-offs is achieved. The Seahawks really played hard to have a home-field advantage -- it wasn't a gift and made for good football. How else would you determine who is the home team?

Yes I agree about keeping the team in top form.  This I think wouldn't stop that.  So in the first round right now it doesn't matter what the records are.  The division champ hosts the wild card.  As an example in the last week of the season Kansas City literally sat almost their entire starting lineup.  They were 11-4, Denver was 12-3 and had the tiebreaker.  San Diego beat their 2nd string and got in the playoffs.  If the division champ didn't automatically get home field KC would have had a chance at getting a first round bye or certainly a home game.  Had they won they would have been 12-4 and seeded ahead of Indy and Cincy who were both 11-5.  I don't know if they would have ranked ahead of New England for the bye.  So they could have hosted that game against the Colts and who knows if playing outdoors in January would have made the 28 point deficit Indy faced too much to overcome.  The initial seeding would take place strictly on record rather than prioritizing division champions.

They have kind of done that in basketball.  The three division champs are seeded in the top four, but not automatically 1-3.  They did that a few years ago after Dallas and the Spurs were the two best teams in the conference but ended up seeded 1 and 4 and played in the second round while the worse record 2 and 3 teams got to avoid the best teams until the 3rd round.

Broncos are in the Super Bowl - life is good!  :)  Sorry OfficeLady but this is Fate.  It's the Year of the Horse and everything.  :D

As to why/who/how is responsible for the SB being placed in NEW JERSEY, in FEBRUARY... I am dumbstruck.  New York is a cool city.  But not in February.  NOBODY goes to the Northeast in the winter for any reason other than holidays.  lol  I don't know it just seems fundamentally nuts to me that they would make that decision when all along the argument has been that weather shouldn't be a factor.  If NY can host the game then why can't Denver ever get a Super Bowl?  It was 63 degrees here yesterday.  Yeah, it might be -3 on game day but isn't that the same exact chance they're taking in NY?   ???

I agree, it is so ridiculous that we are having to hear about how they may change dates and venues. Really, you couldn't figure weather might be a problem when you booked it. I feel bad for both teams. It's a even playing field on that day, but because of the stupidity of the NFL.

Sorry for the double-post, but I am reminded of a day, some years back, when my 3 children were on the swim team at a little, quiet neighborhood swim club. We mostly-moms were watching our darlings in practice, chatting etc. When the swim was over, there was a great commotion. It seems like a tall, rather nice-looking guy had walked into the club and was standing near the pool, like he was looking for someone.

The boys got out of the pool and surrounded him --- and the guys, old and young, rushed from the tennis courts to gawk at him. It seems that none other than John Elway had arrived at our little club to meet his girl friend who was one of the swim coaches.

Her name was Janet ---I think he married her. Anyway, that's my tie to the Broncos, where he is now GM, I believe. But on game day....it'll be Seahawks Forever!  laughingicon

Well, guys, I have to bring some cheer to this place.  laughingicon I have always been a big Peyton Manning fan -- except yesterday, of course, being a Seattle Seahawk fan -- born and raised in Seattle.  We are on top of the mountain today -- getting used to being Super Bowl Champs and getting ready for a big parade on Wednesday which I will miss 'cause I'll be in Tahoe.

Seattle has been to the SB only one other time --in  2006, losing to Pittsburgh in Detroit.  So we are beyond happy in this city of ours.

We were slight underdogs in Las Vegas and huge underdogs according to the sports press who were overcome with the charisma of Peyton Manning. Well, our scrappy young players wanted to win this one....and they brought their game.....and the Broncos didn't. For two cities where weed is legal......we can guess which team stayed sober that day!  laughingicon Oh -- I'm just kidding......we all know that Denver is very straight-laced!   laughingicon

Anyway, I'm so happy for my Seahawks and I hope some of you who pull for the underdog will also share in our joy!  bighugsicon

I think they can be there already yes.  I think the pitchers and catchers have to be there next week and the rest of the players shortly after that.  The first real game is in Sydney around the 22nd of March.  I really wanted to go (even though it's LA and Arizona and I don't care about either of those teams).  But the tickets were crazy expensive.  Like more than the flight to Australia.

Anyone see the men's skating short program last night? Man, did that get off to a dramatic start with Plushenko withdrawing and then the American, Jeremy Abbott falling hard and slamming into the wall.  :o I felt so terrible for Plushenko, as that's got to be so heartbreaking to not be able to compete and in what you know will be your last Olympics. And then I was just amazed at Jeremy for getting up and continuing his program so cleanly after such a brutal fall.

I did see some of the skating, very dramatic! It's sad all the backlash Plushenko is receiving. :(

We are big curling fans and I know the US isn't up there with some of the other countries, but man are they stinking it up. My sons played in a league here and quite honestly made some better shots than our team has done. :-\

Looking forward to some exciting hockey coming up.

The men's figure skating final will definitely miss Plushenko -- his skating and his great big ego. I think it's funny that he is so full of himself -- in America, everybody is supposed to be so modest and humble......and then there's Plushenko, all me-me-me, I-I-I-like the sun, moon and stars revolve around him. laughingicon

I just read about the actual men's final -- haven't seen it yet. Without giving anything away, I think they could've used Plushenko even if he could only skate in a straight line.... laughingicon

rahenson1 so what's your take on the Rangers this season? I don't pay total attention to the preseason, but I have been keeping an eye on the Angels. I think we will be better than last year. Maybe that's just wishful thinking or hopeful optimism. ;)
Title: Re: Sports #3: I will use your talents come baseball season, my friend.
Post by: rahenson1 on March 25, 2014, 10:23:23 PM
If the season started another week or two later the Rangers might be down to Jeff Burroughs, Fergie Jenkins and Jim Sundberg from their 70s teams.  We are going to be without at least one-third of our starting lineup (including Darvish) on opening day.  Maybe more as several guys are missing games in the field with small injuries.  They just sent what we thought was their closer Feliz back to the minors.  Three months ago I thought they had a chance to set the franchise record for wins (96 in 2011).  Now I hope they finish with a winning record.  If they get healthy quickly they can still have a good year, but there are so many things wrong with them that it is just not realistic that all of the recoveries will go to plan.  So while I don't know what's going on with Anaheim it can't be that bad.

They did get in.  I kept thinking they were going to do what they've done the last so many years and blow it.  But they won their way in against St Louis no less.  No one here in the media thinks they have much of a chance.  And so far we've been proven right.  They aren't bad, but they aren't as good as Anaheim.

The Rangers have pleasantly surprised me so far this year.  Even more so with Beltre being added to my list of injured players from last month.  Darvish is still snakebitten.  Guy has pitched three games this year and in his 22 innings they have scored 0 runs.  He's worked 21 scoreless innings and allowed 2 runs in the other inning.

For a few hours earlier this week the Rangers had an injured roster sufficient to play several games.  Guys to play all 8 defensive positions, four starting pitchers and three relievers.  I'll repeat they could field an entire team and last for a few days before they ran out of pitchers.  A guy was injured in his sleep.  Also not kidding about that one.  Add in the guys who have recovered and you'd have two more pitchers and two more fielders.  Amazingly they can find their way back to .500 with a win tomorrow.  I would like them to get back there at least one more time before the year completely unravels on them as it surely will.

If they choke this thing out after being up 3-0 I still will look back on this time with very happy thoughts. After beating the Sharks and Ducks every win was a gift to us long time fans. :)

Sorry rahenson1 about all the Rangers injuries. My husband and I can't get into baseball with the Kings doing so well. I think we have slowly lost our love for baseball. Maybe that would change in the next couple of months. It depends if the Angels can ever beat the A's. ;)

No Stanley Cup for me, but it was a good day yesterday.  Rangers beat King Felix for the 21st time in his career (most losses for him against any team) and the world found out about the newest Jenna Fischer baby.  My dad and I went to a Calder Cup (hockey's top minor league) finals game last Sunday.  Texas (the Dallas minor league team) is playing St Johns (Winnipeg's team).  We just barely made it in time as the normal less than three hour trip to Austin became more than four hours with traffic.  Texas won that game and leads the series 2-1.  I can only assume it's due to scheduling conflicts but after playing Sunday, Monday then traveling from Austin to Newfoundland Canada and playing Wednesday they are off until Monday for game four.

Nope that's not allowed.  For more than two months all we've had to look forward to is the #1 pick.  Anaheim needs to enjoy today and let King Felix beat them so Seattle can get within 1 of Oakland.  Then Anaheim needs to beat us three straight.  First pick means more money to sign draft picks and more money to sign international free agents.  Assuming the Grim Reaper moves on to another city next year we should be back and then with proper use of those resources next year we reload the farm and return to the WS.  As bad as the season has been it is delightful watching Oakland self-immolate and to have been a part of it.  I'd like to lose six straight then win some games against Oakland next weekend and send them home with us for the winter.

Yeah my husband and I can't believe how the tide turned for them. The A's went against their "system", went for the big names, traded their power hitter and boom imploded. We were talking that just under or around a month ago the Angels were 4 games back.

We are scoreless as of right now against King Felix with not a starter in the lineup. We are going for the best record so I think we will try the rest of the way. Of course with our starters being slim I'm sure they will change things up to shore up the rotation. We honestly have Weaver and that's it. The rest are a crapshoot.

My husband, as a surprise for my daughter and myself (our birthday was yesterday), somehow magically arranged for us to meet Jonathan Toews!!! And, as an added bonus, we also got to meet Patrick Sharp, Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, and Niklas Hjalmarsson! It was the coolest thing EVER! My daughter feels about Jonathan Toews the way that I feel about John Krasinski, so you can imagine how excited/freaked out she was. Here are pics!

Well kh you've got a long road back.  But it has been traveled as recently as 2012 when the Giants rallied to win three on the road at Cincy.  Tampa nearly pulled it off against my Rangers in 2010.  At least your fifth would be at home.  Detroit has a slightly easier time of it as their next two would be at home and they only need one road win.  I am heading to St Louis Monday to watch game three and if necessary game four Tuesday of the series against the Dodgers.  I really wanted to go to KC but there was nothing available.  Not even single tickets.  I drove up to StL last year on vacation to see games one and two of their LCS.  This October vacation thing is supposed to be for uninterrupted concentration on Rangers baseball but they have not been cooperative the last three years.  Though never as uncooperative as this year  :o

I have no faith that the Angels will even win one game. I'm watching the epic Giant/National game. The series are all strange. Either a ton of hitting or none at all. It's painful to watch the Angels. Trout has quickly entered the doghouse of the fans. I'm disappointed in him, only because he is taking way too many first strikes. It will be interesting if he turns into another great regular season player and a playoff bust. I would much rather have a team like the 2002 Angels, no stars just a bunch of guys playing for each other. That is very cool you are going to the games in St. Louis.
I'm in a very bad mood since the USC Trojans gave away one of the most embarrassing games ever. So my baseball views might be a bit off. ;)

kh, they were very polite, though not exceptionally chatty. Jonathan Toews was the warmest -- came over to US and talked to my daughter, offered pictures and autographs. But then again, he was specifically told that it was a fan's birthday and was asked (by management) to come say hi. So ... I'm not sure how he'd be normally. But he was very kind, put his arm around my daughter and everything. Patrick Sharp was probably the most standoffish. Not rude, just not particularly warm. Kane, Hjalmarsson, and Keith were all about the same -- polite and business-like. My son has a broken wrist and asked them all to sign his cast. Kane asked him how he broke it. When my son answered, "Playing hockey," Kane said, "Well, that's a good way to break it."  ;D

The new young players would have probably loved to give autographs, but we didn't know who any of them were!

Thanks for answering me. With the Kings winning the cup there have been lots of PR outings where the players have to attend. For the most part they are all pretty cool. Drew Doughty is funny and a rule breaker. If they say one item to be autographed he will do more. :) My friends daughter has a huge crush on Voynov and he goes out of his way to make her feel special. Of course there are a couple that it's all about business and you can tell they don't really want to be there. I just know meeting baseball players when I was younger and then hockey players there is no comparison. Hockey players win by a mile.

Well my Angels went down with a resounding thud. (at least I think so, I stopped watching at 5-1) There should be some major changes even though we lost some pitchers. Not enough passion shown for my liking. I am going to root for the Royals because they are fun to watch and look like they are loving this experience.

No problem! It was an amazing experience and we appreciated every minute they gave us. Caw Caw could also describe how they played about the first 55 minutes of that game.  But 5 good minutes and OT was enough.  Indy meanwhile figured they'd try for a full 60 minutes of that style.  And that will always lose a game.

If this was another team I'm sure it wouldn't be such a big deal. Bill and his previous cheat/border as close as possible to cheating might be part of why this has become such a huge story. If all but one of the balls were underinflated then none of the officials who touched them should ever ref in the NFL again.  That's some pretty high level incompetence not to notice the main piece of equipment in your sport isn't right.  Be like if the umpires never noticed 90 percent of the balls in a game were scuffed or vaselined up by a pitcher.  So I guess my take is shame on the Pats for trying (if they did) but more shame on the refs for failing to stop them from trying.  Game's over so there's no going back (though I read some people fancifully wanting them to replay the game I guess this weekend).

It's not the first time the Patriots have been found to engage in suspicious actions to give them an advantage. If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, then it's probably a duck, if you catch my drift. (Sorry Oregon Ducks laughingicon)

We here in Seattle wish the focus would be on the Super Bowl game, not on what the Pats did or didn't do. It's kind of taken the wind out of our sails.......maybe that's the whole idea......we are a bit paranoid in Seattle.....that we're not taken seriously.  But we are ready to play whoever shows up with whatever footballs.   If New England did mess with the footballs, what a juvenile thing to do. Like talented professional athletes can't win a game on their own merits.

My poor Seahawks! We're nursing our wounds here! To lose with a yard to go for a win....and someone calls for a pass....we are having trouble accepting what happened. But we love our Seahawks!

It was the only fitting conclusion to NFC playoff football.  Detroit was jobbed by the picked up flag that let Dallas advance.  Dallas was jobbed by the overturned Dez Bryant catch that let Green Bay advance.  Green Bay jobbed themselves out of a 16-0 lead to let Seattle advance and thus the Seahawks had to find away to cost themselves a win.  All we know for sure is Arizona and Carolina weren't going anywhere.  But I think we knew that realistically before the playoffs even started.  Arizona was an injury away from calling Neil Lomax up from their long gone St Louis days (hyperbole of course).  And Carolina was arguably the worst team ever to make the playoffs.

Got to take the good with the bad.  Everyone thought it was silly for Seattle to throw with 6 seconds left in the first half and risk missing out on a FG.  Take that TD away and replace it with a FG and they have almost no chance to win at the end as they'd have been down 8 and needing not just the TD but a 2 point try just to force OT.  Of course that's easy for me to say as I'm not invested in whether they won or lost.  I'm still largely inconsolable about Nelson Cruz and game 6 of the 2011 WS.  My initial thought about not wanting to wait 18 years like Boston had to between 86 and 04 looks more and more ominously accurate.
