Happy Something on a Stick Day (http://www.somethingonastick.com/)!

If you need some ideas, the Iowa State Fair offered over 50 different items on a stick (http://www.iowastatefair.com/fair-attractions/food/on-a-stick/) last summer.

Let the inappropriate comments begin....   ::)

Go to aol.com and click on the link for mail. How awesome is it that my friend Sara is on their page?!  ;D That photo is also on a few billboards around San Francisco, so it'll be interesting to see where else it shows up. :)

Haha - this is a message Sara just received:

"I have no idea if you're real or not. AOL keeps showing me your fetching countenance every time I log in to check my email. You're pretty."

I told her that it's better than match.com. :)

My Dad, who is awesome, does not get the concept of waiting for the beep to start his message on my answering machine. Hence, most of the messages I receive from him go something like this:

(my machine's message): 1st message: beepdinknDad: ".... so anyway, that's why I was calling. Sorry I missed you, give me a call back so we can talk about it. Love you."

OR,

my machine's message:
1st message: beep

dinknDad: "Hello? Hello? I can't tell if it's recording or not (to my mom)."
dinknMom: "Did you hear it beep?"
dDad: "I don't know, I can't tell."
dMom: "Just have her call you back."
dDad: "But what if she doesn't get the message?"
dMom: "She usually calls first thing in the morning anyway."
dDad: "Hello? Oh I don't know." (hang up)

This love child story of Arnold Schwargenegger is driving me nuts. Being that the woman and son live in Southern Calif. they are beating this to death on the news. >:(

That's why I avoid the news!  The media grabs onto one story and beat it to death.  Meanwhile, there are actual newsworthy stories out there that are getting pushed aside!

So maybe there is something wrong with me, but that link was pretty cool.  And, I don't really remember the blue whale at the Smithsonian, but there was one that hung from the ceiling at the Museum of Natural History in NYC.  When we were younger my dad took my sisters and I there all the time with my aunt and her  kids and we would sit around talking about how cool it would be if it fell.... yup, there is totally something wrong with me!

Ditto. Ever since I was a kid I've been freaked out by underwater creatures (even went through a phase where looking at dolphins scared me). Around that time, I went to the Smithsonian, and didn't even notice the whale until I was half-way through and I thought I was gonna pass out when I finally looked up. I had to put my head down and run out of that museum!

Can someone explain the obsession with Pippa Middleton?  The girl is on every gossip and entertainment page!  Sure, she's very pretty and all, but why so much attention to Prince William's sister-in-law?  And the stories aren't even that interesting, she was seen shopping or clubbing?  So.....
Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?

Because she's more attractive than her sister and it's something to talk about while the royal couple were off creating the next heir. And she's got what John Oliver and Andy Zaltzman call England's A-Bomb. ;) Is it overdone? Sure but as long as the media are giving attention to so many trivial things, like Beatrice's hat, I get adding this too.

We do something similar. When new president's are elected, suddenly their family members are temporary celebrities. I knew more about Patti Davis than I ever wanted to thanks to that media mentality.

Does anyone here live in an area or have a commute where you don't encounter traffic? I'd like to hear if such a place exists so that I can be jealous. Maybe it's because of the excessive heat or my impatience, but it seems like traffic, at least in the greater Philadelphia area, is getting worse and worse.

I lived in Atlanta and Seattle before moving to Durham and the lack of traffic is one of the best things about where I live. Additionally, I *rarely* have to get on the interstate so most of my days are on secondary streets and it never takes me longer than 30 minutes to get somewhere.

Sorry traffic is so bad for you. :( You & the fam can come down and visit any time.  ;D

I live in South Jersey, near the beach but not at the beach, so in the winter I rarely hit traffic going to and from work.  Now in the summer, it's only a problem in Fridays but I plan my work schedule to avoid it if possible.

This makes me sad. Even more than Columbo, I think of him in John Cassavetes' films - these guys invented 'indie'. My mom had a crush on Peter Falk back in the day - quirky, smart, gritty, no bs pretty boy crap...she had good taste.

RIP.  :)

Peter Falk - John Cassavetes - Ben Gazzara   When I think of one of them, I think of all three. Toss in Gena Rowlands, too.

Dang wish I knew last year when I was there; would have stopped by for some sweet tea ;). What you have in Atlanta that blew my mind was the 12 lane major highway that went North/South through the city. This is something we desperately need, but never will get, here in Philadelphia: the river is on one side and sheer rock cliffs and houses on the other.

B: I'm so disappointed I didn't feel it.

I about lost it when I read that.

Since I have lived through 3 major earthquakes, I am petrified of them. I have never felt dizzy or nauseous but I'm sure it could be common. I didn't mind them so much until the 94 Northridge quake when I had two little kids I was responsible for. They are terrifying when you are asleep when one hits. It didn't help that we had $100,000.00 in damage to our house. >:(

My first earthquake!

It was a strange feeling.  I was at work (on Long Island) and I felt a shaking of my chair so I thought someone had come up behind me and was shaking it.  Much to my surprise nobody was behind me so I looked at my coworker and at the same moment we realized what it was.  We evacuated the building and about 30 minutes later we were sent home.

I was working in my office building in downtown DC and yeah, definitely felt that. It lasted, it seems, like a full minute. We basically all looked at each other and then headed to the stairwell. I finally left at 3:00 but I didn't catch a bus until at least 4:30 and didn't arrive home until 6. I live near the National Cathedral and it was damaged. :(

So now after the little quake we had, we also have to prepare for Hurricane Irene in the northeast!  Here in NJ it's supposed to hit sometime late Saturday, early Sunday as a category 1.  I haven't lived through a hurricane (that I can really remember), but my husband is going into disaster mode.

Yeah, people here are running to the store for milk and bread.  ::) I just hope it doesn't hit us at night b/c I don't want to be up all night worrying about it. At least during the day, I'm already up and feel like I can handle things quicker if something happens.

My husband is panicking - he's away for work and flies back home Friday so he's so worried that he won't be able to get home.  But I read that it was hitting the Carolina's on Saturday or Sunday, so I assumed it would be up here a day or so later?  I'll have to read up about it...

I don't know that I feel the need to stock up on stuff, but I think I might feel sort of "eh" about a hurricane, like it won't really hit us hard.  Which is probably naive of me, since apparently this could be a big storm.

I was at the grocery store, buying milk, bread, eggs, etc. so I'd be prepared for any hurricane related weather -- when the earthquake hit.   ???

Mother nature is totally messing with me.

BTW, you have to love how the freaking Federal government and every other official entity shuts DOWN, causing yet another traffic snafu, while the Giant employees calmly go through the store cleaning up the few broken jars of jalapenos and spaghetti sauce.  I think the biggest crisis was that everyone couldn't get through on their cell phones when they called their friends and say 'did you feel THAT?'.

My sister texted me -- no problem.   ;)

Kells, I hope your husband gets home safe.

My biggest fear about this earthquake?  Being stuck in the house with no power with two boys.  My kids get antsy when it rains, they are outside boys so we usually have movie time when it rains.  If the power goes out, they're going to be off the wall.

I have to go to Walmart today to get non- hurricane items, but I was thinking I might pick up a few storm staples just in case.  My oldest would live on PB&J if we let him, so I just need anything I could feed the little one if the power goes out.  My stove is electric so if we're powerless for any length of time, we'll be eating nothing but sandwiches!

Oh,  and to revise what I previously said, I have lived through a hurricane!  I was 4 when Hurricane Gloria hit and vaguely remember evacuating to my Grandma's in north Jersey!

OMG IF I remember Gloria! lol.  I remember watching the rain pouring down off of our back porch...I think I'm a wee bit older than you, I believe I was 8 or so when Gloria hit.  Too funny! (I too grew up in NJ - more South Jersey though)

So this morning I'm hearing that we almost def will get hit, so on my lunch break I'm going to at least buy some water, extra flashlights, batteries, and maybe some non perishables like cereal, etc.  My kids will be so hard to feed without power! Ugh!

Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?

Kells, I grew up at the shore, still live close.  I agree about feeding the kids with no power.  I make them a hot breakfast every morning, they're going to freak if I give them cereal for breakfast!

I wasn't so worried about the storm until today.  The more I watch, the more I freak out.  I live a few miles from the bay and they are expecting the bay to flood about a mile inland here.

These are the times I most hate my husband's job.  He's a police officer in a small town.  A lot of the town is bay front and a memo went out today alerting them all of the recall schedule.  Because my husband was supposed to be off this weekend, he's on call for two 12 hour shifts: 6pm Saturday until 6 am Sunday and 6 pm Sunday until 6 am Monday.  This means they can call him in if needed during those times for either part of the shift or the whole shift.  When he told me this, I started freaking out.  I know this is a part of his job, but the thought of being home alone with my small children (3.5 and almost 2) during a hurricane is making my hyperventilate.  I keep playing things over in my mind; a window breaking and I don't know what to do, etc.  I am seriously considering taking the kids and going to my in-laws if he gets called in, but then I worry about driving in the bad weather.

Oh no IF - I'll keep you guys in my thoughts!  Stay safe.

Just watching the latest tracks tonight is freaking me out.  They are even talking about evacuating some parts of NYC! Can you imagine if the subway system floods?

I got lots of stuff today, I think tomorrow I will get more water and some batteries.  My husband should land around 5ish and hopefully will be home by 7 or so to help me bring the rest of the stuff in from outside.

Stay safe and dry everyone!

My mom & sister & nephew & the dogs are leaving OBX in the morning to stay with friends in Chapel Hill.  That traffic is going to SUCK!

What is UP with Mother Nature?  I really wasn't planning on explaining this much to my kids.
Last week we had hail -- 2 days in a row.  Had to explain that no, that does not mean it's going to snow.
The 4 yo said she was afraid of the earthquake, 7 yo said she wasn't, 'but she was nervous'.  Ooooookay.
Now I'm getting the questions about what a hurricane is.  Hmm... I guess they weren't around for Isabel.

This is turning out to be a lot more educational week than I had planned on.

Italian Food, if you end up with an actual emergency situation while your husband's gone, you can call the police. I'm sure they'll send some really nice police officer. Maybe even someone very familiar to you. ;D

But seriously, talk to him about what kinds of situations might come up and what he'd want you to do. It will be okay. bighugsicon

Unfortunately, we don't live in the same town he works in.  Fortunately, my neighbor is a police sergeant in the town we live in, so fingers crossed he's home if something happens and my husband is not.

He left at 4 this afternoon for his regular 10 hour shift, plus 4 hours hours of overtime that was scheduled a long time ago.  He'll be home at 6 am tomorrow and his on call starts at 6 pm tomorrow night.  They were all told this afternoon that it looks like everyone should expect to work most if not all of their on calls.  Plus side, that's a ton of overtime.

Funny story: While my oldest was at preschool this morning, my husband and I prepared are backyard for the storm.  All of the toys are in the garage plus all of our patio furniture.  Our yard looks desolate.  When I brought #1 home from school, he looks out the back door and yells, "What the heck happened here?  Where are all my toys?"  My husband and I both lost it.   ;D

Irene go home!!  >:(  Not liking this hurricane business one bit.

And to add to the fun - my son recently left his apt. (in a supposedly 'transitional' neighborhood - only not so much at 2 a.m.) after being mugged outside his building, with a kitchen knife pressed into his belly. So, he moved to a pretty cushy housesitting type of situation while he looked for a new place. Which now turns out to be right in 'zone A' - i.e., the area expected to be hardest hit by the hurricane.

What next? He moves into his new place in two weeks, and a meteor bursts through his window? A mom can only take so much.  ???

We survived the hurricane pretty much unscathed here.  We had a few downed tree branches and a bush that was already dying thanks to chipmunks was uprooted.  My backyard looks like a swamp, but that's nothing unusual for a heavy rain.  We only lost power for a few minutes.

My oldest was terrified of the wind, as I posted in the Parenting thread, but finally fell asleep in my bed at midnight, 4 hours after his usual bedtime!

Glad you were safe, IF. Same here. Got a little dicey during the toronado warnings. We also had water coming in vertically into the top of our front door transom, which is under a roof. That sort of defies the laws of physics. We rigged a little wall of plastic bags and had it drain into a large cooler. McGyver would have been proud.

I believe this is the right place for this. I was flipping channels and The View had a tribute to "All My Children" today. I got completely choked up seeing some of the old footage. When Greg ,Jenny, Angie and Jesse came out I was right back 30 years ago. I watched on and off that one from the beginning until about 5 years ago. It makes me sad that the soaps are going to be a thing of the past. The memories I have are always going to be with me. <3

Go to The Black Rose  (http://www.yelp.com/biz/the-black-rose-boston) and listen to Irish music and drink a lot.  Then tell people that you work for the Boston Globe and are covering Irish Bars in anticipation of an article for St Patrick's Day and pose in a ton of pictures with them, take email addresses and never send copies of the pictures.

Or maybe that's what I've done when I'm in Boston. ;)

Seriously though.  The Black Rose is a good time.   It's also near Fanueil Hall so bonus!

What is the etiquette on sending a wedding gift when you know you were on B-List for invites?

A female coworker of my husband had planned on having a destination wedding in November until she found out that her husband-to-be had been cheating on her for months, maybe even years.  They split up, cancelled the destination wedding and that was that.  Fast forward a few months and they run off to Vegas to elope without telling anyone, not even their parents.  Now, they are having a small reception to celebrate at a local restaurant.  We know that invitations went out a while ago because we've heard people talking about it, but today we got the invitation, a printed wedding invite, but the RSVP date was changed with pen.  We are assuming we weren't initially invited and now they must be getting a bunch of declines so we get the invite, with about 3 weeks until the reception.

My husband outright refuses to go.  Knowing what he knows about the husband's extracurricular activities, he says he's not going to celebrate a marriage he doesn't think will last.  Plus, he has to work that night and will not waste a day off for this.  Also, I know she doesn't like me. (It's a long, very stupid story, but I can say I am totally innocent in this.)  Are we obligated to send a gift eventhough we are being invited last minute?
Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?
Post by: sora on October 18, 2011, 04:18:43 PM
If you're not attending, I don't think you need to send a present... ^^;; Just send a card, declining, but wishing them well. Heh... then again, that's just my option.
Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?
Post by: lisahoo on October 18, 2011, 04:42:01 PM
I agree -- don't go.  You aren't obligated to send a gift if you don't attend.

Let's see -- she doesn't like you, husband doesn't like the husband-to-be.  Pretty easy decision there.

Post by: Italian_Food on October 18, 2011, 06:27:22 PM
Thanks to both of you.  The decision to not go was an easy one, but I a friend of mine implied that it's rude not to send a gift when you are invited to a wedding even if you don't attend.

Post by: SnoWhiteSally on October 18, 2011, 10:56:49 PM
Maybe it's rude when the wedding you aren't attending is an actual friend, but I think you're good. I'd do what Sora said, send your RSVP with a little mesage wishing them well. Mean it or not, you'll look good :)

Why can't my kids just pose, ONE picture, nicely? Why is it a wrestling match/smear the queer/avoid the camera-fest, every single time? Now we have the uncooperative dog in the mix. I'm seriously thinking of reusing last year's picture and see if anyone notices. Sheer luck got me that one.... Come on guys! Cheeeeeeeese.

My kids are the same way, unless we get professional pics taken.  Apparently they respond better to strangers than their own parents.  This year, however, we added my 5 month old neice to the mix so we can give my mom a shot of her grandkids.... she was impossible.

I didn't really know what thread was best for this. It's happiness, fear, stress, excitement, and a hundred other things all balled together from one little fact:

In 79 days I will take a single suitcase, get on an airplane, and move halfway around the world.

The amount of work involved in doing this seems to grow more and more everyday. Sell almost everything I own; sort out things like banking, insurance, student loan payments, medications; make a budget without any financial information; mentally prepare myself to leave everything and everyone I know; and do all this without the slightest hint that anything will ever come of it!

*Deep Breath* *And Another*

Okay.

I'm not doubting my decision to do this. I know without a shadow of a doubt that if I didn't take this chance now, I'd regret it forever. But I think I'm doubting my ability to do this. So far 2012 has, overall, not been good for. Actually, it's probably been one of the worst points of my life, to be honest. I just feel very fragile, I think. Like, I'll go and do this huge thing and completely break.

But, I'm still excited. There's a part of me that is hopeful that something really great will come of this. If there wasn't, I wouldn't be doing it.

Anyway. Sorry to ramble on. I'm just having a bit of a freakout!

London, England. I have a 2 year work permit and residency visa. I finish grad school one month from today, and am heading over to find an internship, the final requirement for my program. I'm hoping to find something with a development agency that includes a bit of travel to Asia.

I'm also hoping while over there I can at some point tag along with beanyb on one of her adventures to India, Morocco, or any other exotic location! Heh.

Have a great time and give us lots of updates! London is such a great place. You're going to have the time of your life.

Thanks, Callisto! I love London so much. I did a year in England during my undergrad, and spent most weekends in London. I've been able to go back an visit twice since. All that time, and still so much more to see! In case I don't get to post much here, I'll be posting regularly on my blog (http://sloanesquare.wordpress.com), I hope!

Sometimes we just have to push the "reset" button and do something out of the ordinary.

I really hope that's the case! And thanks for the kind words, OL. They mean a lot!

I'm excited because I'm actually making legitimate plans for my first solo trip back to the motherland next year. If I'd been more organised I could have seen the Olympics, Wimbledon, Euro 2012 and the Jubilee. But I'm not, so 2013 will have to do. And I can't wait  ;D

I heard rumours of this! And I'm so excited so get confirmation!! If you come, and we don't meet up, expect a severe shunning coming your way, lady! TA gals meet-up is a MUST! I know you have family in England, but you're staying with me in London for at least a couple days. O will come for sure, A should be living there by then, R might even fly over if we ask- It's going to be AWESOME!

----

So, yeah, the prospect of many visitors is getting me excited, if that's not obvious! So many MTT folks, no less! Sally lives there (and I will see her every-other day I'm sure!), VanFan is coming over in the fall, summerteeth will be over whenever she can find a cheap flight (and vice-versa), beanyb is moving to London too in the next while (or even if that changes, she's a short flight away), SK isn't too far so I can't spend 2 years over there without seeing her, and who-knows who else along the way! (Well, M&S, as stated above! Heh)

Plus, lots of family and friends from home who said they'd be visiting. I best invest in a good air mattress ;)

I'm also super excited about traveling. There's so many places in Europe I've yet to do, or want to re-do. Poland (top of the list!), Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Turkey, Croatia, etc, etc, etc. And it'll be so cheap to do weekend trips!

Now, let's our fingers and toes crossed that I find me a job!

What kind of jobs are you looking for, btw?

Also, now we have a great excuse to visit London!  :D We've only been once, and it is a really great city.

PS. I have to start paying more attention on Facebook, 'cause I feel like this shouldn't be news to me. :: embarrassed::

Yes! You and M coming to London would be wonderful! I'm just finishing up my post-grad in International Development, so I'm looking at jobs in that field. Most positions are with NGOs, which would be my preference. We shall see though.

It's my fault this isn't news, I suppose. I haven't emailed (boo me) or sent an annoyingly long letter your way in ages. Though, I'm not even sure I have your new address, now that I think about it. This must be corrected! I shall email you this week! Heh.

Spencer, like others have said already, this will be an amazing experience for you. You're going to love every second of it! Plus, you're going to London, which is one of my two favourite cities in the whole world. But seeing as you've already lived in the UK, you probably already know how wonderful London is. :)

I moved to the other side of the world a little over 10 years ago. While it was a little weird in the beginning, it was also the best decision I've ever made. I made some of my best friends there, and even though I was supposed to stay for only a year, I ended up staying for almost five. I loved it so much! Living abroad gives you a different perspective, and it usually changes your entire outlook on life.  Plus, you get to travel, which is a huge bonus!

Also, it's so cool that you'll be living not too far from my neck of the woods! If you ever decide to go to Norway, you'll have to let me know. After all, you can't travel across the Atlantic without seeing a couple of fjords and a Viking or two. ;)
Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?
Post by: S.K on May 29, 2012, 09:08:54 AM
The fjords are magnificent, but what about the people eating moose?? Or the moose that bite people. Or something like that.

No, wait, that's Sweden.

Carry on.

ETA And it's also lovely lakes, not magnificent fjords. I fail at my Monty Python quotes so hard it's not even funny.

kreidy- I think Norway is a must. I got an email a few days ago from Sally that included something like "We're [myself included] going to Norway, btw." I will definitely be picking your brain before said trip!

And all these potential visitors! So much to be excited for! Which reminds me, I need to email you updating you on my current adventure plans, I'll do that in the morning.

Also, Jedward totally only lost the Eurovision because of the flat hair. I don't know what they were thinking! I fully intend to vote to send them to represent us every year until they win. We can't afford to host it, so sending them every year is the best plan!

My husband and I have very different ideas of "relaxing."  His mom is babysitting tomorrow while we go to a funeral, the following conversation ensued this afternoon:

Husband: My mom says she's going to go visit my grandparents when we get home from the funeral.
Me: Okay.
Husband: I was thinking I would take the boys and go, too.  You can come or just stay home and relax.
Me: I have to go food shopping when we get home.
Husband: Oh, well it will be relaxing to go food shopping by yourself.   ::)  wallicon

My kids are older now, so I pretty much always go food shopping by myself, and actually, it's nice now with a kid with me, because they aren't any work in the store and they keep me company.

But back when they were little and it was a pain to shop with them, I did find it really relaxing to food-shop by myself! It wasn't as relaxing as being home on my own, but it was more relaxing than shopping with little ones.

The most relaxing thing is to go away without the kids for a weekend, like to a wedding or something. Luxury!

Anyone familiar with Wattpad? I guess it's a site for writers to post fiction, but I had never heard of it before a few days ago. I just read that a 17-year-old girl got a three book publishing deal because one of the stories she published on Wattpad was such a hit. I just went to check it out and at first glance it seems like an archive for fiction and fanfic, mostly for teens? Lots of One Direction stuff, etc. ... I just don't know anything about it...

(BTW, I downloaded the book that got the girl the publishing deal. Yuck. Reads like mediocre fan fiction.)
Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?
Post by: Callisto on March 25, 2013, 07:28:46 PM
I haven't heard of that, wendolf, but I gotta say, from everything I have ever heard about publishing yourself, it's a bad idea. Perhaps my sources are biased (that is, agents and publishing houses!) but it seems like you lose all your credibility when you publish yourself.

Have you had any luck finding an agent? I haven't cast a net in a while, but I am working on what I think (hope) is shaping up to be a pretty good YA mystery and will try again when I finish it.  The first novel I finished, frankly, wasn't all that good. I'd like to make some changes to it and try again to sell it, but I'm already involved in too many writing projects!  A good problem to have, I suppose... beats writer's block :D
Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?
Post by: wendolf on March 26, 2013, 12:51:30 AM
Yeah, I've heard the same thing, Callisto. I think the industry usually sees self publishing as a sign of an amateur, but I thought maybe there might be some good fiction (or fan fiction) on that sight ... Wondered if anyone had heard of it. Seems like it's mostly teenagers, from what I can tell. Not the most discerning of audiences. But I thought it might be fun to post some of my older fiction under a pseudonym. It's stuff that will never get published conventionally -- I wrote it all when I was in my 20s and its just not good enough -- but I think that audience might like it.  ;)

I'm kind of in a holding pattern in finding an agent, thanks for asking. I have a young agent from a decent agency interested in my YA novel, but she wanted me to do a little tweaking before offering me representation. She gave me a lot of great feedback and I did a revision and resubmitted it. Now I'm just waiting to hear back. It's torture, but I know that this is how the publishing industry moves. Like molasses. If she's not interested after reading the revision, then it's back to the query process.

I agree -- too many ideas/projects is better than a writing wasteland! If you ever want to chat writing ... Let me know! Good luck with your new YA mystery!

Yes, it's arthritis. After my left hip was replaced in January 2012, I had a lot of physical therapy and water aerobics and was able to take a road trip to Arizona in April and then take a trip to Italy in May with friends, tromping all over SE Italy. I thought I was home free! And then my right hip started being grumpy and it was down hill until now -- I'm hobbling around. At least my body is telling me that I made the right decision to have a replacement.

Thanks for all your good thoughts.  bighugsicon

I'm walking with a walker for awhile --   It reminds me of that scene in "The Producers" -- all those ladies in their walkers. It's fun having my daughter here -- she rescues animals in New Mexico -- and she talked me into letting her bring this little Chihuahua mix. He was going to be euthanized but she rescued him. He has these little flat ears (sort of elfin-looking) and a row of shiny white little teeth that protrude above his lower lip. OfficeLady, or BionicLady?  ;) Glad the surgery went well. It is good to have that as an option; I expect I'll need that some years down the road.

I have not been able to tear myself away from the news all week (except for when my kids were around) and as soon as I switched on CNN this evening, the reporter heard the shots.  I haven't looked away since!  I keep checking twitter for John's response, but nothing since Monday.

Personally, I hope they can get suspect #2 alive.  I want answers!

I wasted my whole day in front of the TV news while my kids were at school.  I feel a bit ripped off that I missed when they finally caught the guy.

I was also thinking about whether the Boston MTT'ers were OK, and how they were holding up with the lockdown, too.

I wasn't at the marathon, don't personally know anyone injured, and my town wasn't locked down. I had one family member in the lockdown (which wasn't just Watertown but a number of surrounding towns; she was in one of the other towns) but I knew she was safe & not going anywhere.

My kid's friend's Dad was standing near where the first bomb went off about an hour before it happened -- luckily he was safely back at work (one block away), and when he heard the blasts and found out what had happened he went home as soon as he could. I know there are a ton of stories like that..."if it had been 10 minutes earlier..." kinds of things.

The Boston Marathon is always such a huge deal here. People come from all over the world to run, lots of people from the area run (many for charities), there are "regulars" who run, like the Hoyts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Team_Hoyt)*, and people year after year head for the route to cheer. It's extremely well-organized and an amazingly positive experience for everyone. Sunday night there are always bits on the news about all the people "carbo-loading" pasta and beer in preparation.

I've watched from the route in the past, but in more recent years, I just really enjoy watching from home. One of the stations has marathon coverage starting before the race starts and going into the afternoon, more than an hour after the "winners" come in. This year their coverage ended at 1:30; the first bomb of course went off at 2:50, so they were back on shortly after that with coverage. All their reporters were still there, hanging out, waiting for people they knew to finish the race, etc. Again, just such a wonderful and happy atmosphere.

So for something like this to happen was really hard to fathom. I can't imagine ever thinking about the marathon again without thinking of the bombs.

I also don't know what this will mean for the security of future events. The area had been checked by bomb-sniffing dogs earlier, but it was the side of the street people could watch from and could come and go as they pleased. There are businesses there, apartments...I can't imagine they can check every backpack big enough for a device, and/or send everyone through metal detectors.

Even if you lock down the last three blocks before the finish line, there are plenty of other places where a big crowd gathers. I don't envy the people trying to figure out next year's security...the mind boggles. :-\

To leave you with a more positive kick-ass feeling, I give you this wonderful picture which some wonderful person made (https://twitter.com/MariaSiaflianis/status/325418401503797249/photo/1).

*According to wikipedia, "The Hoyts did not finish the 2013 Boston Marathon. They had about a mile to go when two bombs exploded near the finish line, and were stopped by officials along with thousands of other runners still running the race. They were not injured. A bystander with an SUV gave them a ride to the Sheraton hotel but they were temporarily separated from Rick's wheelchair."

I can't believe how life imitates art. My son and daughter-in-law are going through almost the same scenario as Jim and Pam. My son has taken a new job in a conpletely different field -- he had her support when he made the move -- but he was gone during weekdays for training and home on weekends, This has gone on for 6 months.

Now, he's home, but still in training and is very stressed about making a go of the job. (He's a "power worrier"). He came over yesterday to visit with me, and  revealed that there won't be openings near his home.  My daughter-in-law has a profession that she values and won't move. They have two children, 10 and 3 -- and they are faced with him being assigned to another area where he will once again be away from home for part of the week. He told me that she is very emotional about the whole thing -- just like Pam -- I can't believe that I'm watching this play out on two levels -- real and fiction!!

I just shared with my son that I hoped that he valued his wife and children above all -- and his response was, "I'm doing this for our future." Sound familiar?  I know that the fictional couple will be all right -- because the writers will write the story that way. But the real-life couple have to deal with what is presented and I hope and pray that they are strong and commited to each other.  I love them both so much and try not to worry but to have faith that things will work out..  bighugsicon

They've started filming "50 Shades...." in Vancouver, BC. Here are some photos of the scene where Anastasia and Christian go on a 'coffee date'.........one of my favorite scenes in the book. I think the books tell a really beautiful love story above and beyond all the erotica which gets all the attention. I'm a fan and hope that they can pull this movie off with this assortment of B-list actors. bighugsicon

Is anyone else besides me following the filming of "50 Shades of Grey" -- taking place right now in Vancouver, BC.? Such an interesting cast -- I don't know what to think -- full of 'B' actors I've never heard of, and then they cast Marcia Gay Harden as Christian's mother, a part that is rather a bit part at best. And the choice for Mia.....!! I'm not familiar with her work but the photos make her look like an exotic dancer ----absolutely the opposite of the Mia in my mind.

I know that many could care less about the book -- but I am a fan of the love story and really hope they can pull off the movie. At this point I think they need a lot of luck..... bighugsicon Any thoughts?

That's weird casting - she doesn't seem "dignified" enough. She seems more like a typical mom next door - not a classy doctor.

I was wondering if anyone .....left  here ( laughingicon) has posted on the TWOP forums. Because of my deranged interest in SOA I decided to sign on and post a few thoughts on that forum. (OL......you live dangerously  laughingicon ) So I think I'm smart and cute....but first get edited by some moderator and end up with two warnings.....something about 'Board on Boards'....haven't a clue.....but I guess I now know that they control that forum pretty tightly And is there some kind of purgatory that you're sent to if you get warnings? I won't be posting anymore...because I'm over my shocked reactions to the finale.....and I don't want to be edited.   ::)  laughingicon

OL, you have just discovered for yourself the reason MTT was created way back in 2007. The hand-slapping and interference of the moderators drove a lot of us away.

If I recall correctly, Boards on Boards means a poster is talking about the forum itself, not the actual show. Maybe something like, "Oh, I'm really happy to have found kindred spirits to share my love  of SoA with." Or "This forum is the prettiest forum of all the forums." No wandering off topic, either. If you're in an episode thread, God forbid a poster should mention how cute JK's smile was when he bent down to kiss Rainn Jenna.  ;D  Cuteness is not part of the plot!

I got back on TWoP over the summer to post on the New Girl forum some, but I'm retreating once again because the negativity towards the show is off the charts now. It's the same reason I left The Office forum there to come to MTT. I don't mind constructive criticism and differing opinions, but when people go on and on about how much they think something sucks, to the point where I'm thinking "why do they even watch this show anymore" it definitely takes the joy out of discussing the show. I had no idea they were so strict on editing people, though. Probably depends somewhat on the particular moderator, but I wasn't aware that it had been that way in TO forum.

Thanks for the input. I do remember that people referred to TO forum on TWOP as crazy-making. I used to read the posts on TWOP back in the day but could never sign in. I guess it's a good thing -- I would have been very frustrated as I am now. A third warning that I got was for posting on a 'spoiler' thread something that wasn't a spoiler -- but for some reason it was removed. I think I clicked on some promise to understand the rules....or something.   laughingicon  (People like me have no business on the Internet, methinks. bighugsicon)

Catching up, so I'm way late to the topic...

If I said something like, "I don't understand how all you people like Jim and Pam together!" I think that would be "board on boards." Also, saying something like, "Why do you people even watch the show if you dislike it so much?" would be BoB. Even something like, "OfficeLady, I like the way you think!" might be considered BoB. You have to be really careful to just discuss the show, and even to be in the right thread.

I read the Walking Dead episode threads and there they really come down on people who discuss something from this episode in comparison to prior episodes, like "Carol did this in this episode and Rick was mad about it, but Rick did something just as bad three episodes ago and no one called him on it." Then the moderator might tell people to take it to the All Seasons thread or a character thread.

Some mods are more moderate ;) but yeah, this is a big part of why MTT went from being a great place for Office fanfic to a great forum to talk about TO and other things.

My family will be starting a big new chapter of our lives! My husband is at home packing the truck (while I work my last day) and tonight we start driving to our new life on Long Island.  :o My husband got a job at Hofstra University, I'll be looking for a new job, and Funkytot will be in daycare until he starts Kindy in the Fall (here, he'd start next year, but the cut off is later in NY).

Exciting and scary times, but we're thrilled to be so close to NYC and I can't wait to see Funkytot's first view of the city. :D

We've been here since Saturday and already had a crazy time! Mostly b/c there are squirrels in the attic. The maintenance guy would trap one, then have to come back an hour later b/c another squirrel got in. They finally caught on and actually plugged the hole.... after pulling 3 out (and there's another trapped in there right now).

Then my husband had to go to a work meeting this afternoon.... and realized that he had only packed 2 right shoes. We ran to the mall to get him shoes so he wouldn't have to show up with sneakers and a suit.

On the plus side, Funkytot was going to be slowly transitioned into his new school - 2 hours on Monday, half day Tues & Wed, and full days Thurs & Fri. We went to pick him up today and he wouldn't leave b/c he was having so much fun.  ;D So yeah - that worked out well and it's one last thing to worry about!

I think it'll be a while until we go into the city - probably after it warms up a bit. Sheesh - this polar vortex is crazy! Although, our previous city got snow dumped on it the other day and we only got a dusting.  ;D

Sounds like the typical moving crazyiness, Funky!  :) Hopefully, things will settle down for you all soon. Glad Funkytot likes his new school, though! That's always a relief when you can drop them off at school and not worry about them being upset or nervous. Heck, mine has been going to the same preschool all year and I still have to wipe some tears and pry him off of me some mornings. ::)
Title: Re: Random Anything Else: Have you ever tasted a rainbow?

In th previous city, I had to pry Funkytot off me, too. I assume he's just excited about all the new toys and he's been bored at the rental house because we don't have any of his toys unpacked. I'm guessing he'll go back to having difficult drop offs in a month. One thing I think is awesome about the school is that it's part of the university and they take walks around campus when it's warm. They go to the museum, visit parents at work, go to the library, etc.

The squirrel count is at 5 and there are 2 still in the attic. I'm afraid that a hole was plugged, but they're getting in through another one.

Has anyone seen this website - http://www.markedout.com/ ? It was linked from On Location Vacations, and it was listed as a place where people post their encounters with celebs. I couldn't find a way to search for old encounters (which is frustrating), but then I went into the forum. It really just seems like a place for autograph hounds to hang out. I did a search on Krasinski, but nothing came up. There were, however, a bunch of threads referencing Steve.
