I know this was written some years ago, but thought deserved a review. On the one hand this was brilliantly written and very absorbing, but I also wasted over an hour of my life for Pam and RYAN?! That’s should have had a warning! Absolutely abhorrent as an end for me I’m afraid (I should have seen it coming) Congrats on the excellent writing though. JAM FOREVER!

Wow, this was not where I thought (or wanted) the story to go, but you did a great job.

I read this a long time ago, and I still come back to it. It's a fun ride all the way through, and the final two chapters hit especially hard. There are so many lines that I've quoted to myself.

I love your attention to detail in this story. You manage so many little throwbacks, like the stamps that don't say "love" on them and Ryan asking Jim to send a postcard from Australia. Your use of quotes as chapter titles is honestly inspired.

The characterization is amazing. You use real issues from the show that undermine Jim/Pam (e.g. Pam being friends with Dwight, Pam being friends with Karen, Pam wanting something more than Dunder-Mifflin, Jim always holding onto the railing) to make Pam want more. And Jim is so recognizable as he leads Karen on and tries to start a relationship with Pam without really putting himself out there.

I ship Ryan/Pam, but I appreciate how this fic really transcends shipping. At its heart, this story is a love letter to Pam, and I'm very proud of her every time that she realizes that she needs to do something for herself.

Thank you for a wonderful story!

I'm going to be honest, when I started reading this I had actually no idea it was Ryan/Pam, I came here looking for Jim/Pam and just wasn't paying attention. But I have to say you completely SOLD me on Ryan/Pam! This was such a gorgeous story! The relationship grew so naturally, and you really made Jim and Pam not work in a way that seemed believable and in character! You are so talented, thanks for writing this!

Awesome ! Ryan and Pam is the best- please more of them. Also when you said she went tober to his place you never said it was Ryan's place so you might have wanted to state a name .

So I know this was written agessss ago. But it's such a different fic that I just need to vent, even if you probably won't read this.

I like Jim in this. I think you've portrayed him fairly spot-on, in a broody, angsty way. One of the things I think everyone loves about Jim is that he's always just been so in love with Pam. Even when he was with Karen, even when he was in Stamford, even when she shut him down, he loved her. And I like that you've portrayed that in this.

Pam in this is... too much I think. I appreciate what you're trying to do with her but i just don't see it. I mean, this was prior even to the fancy new beesly we have now. She was still wearing her hair up (ultimate symbolism), she hadn't had her coal walk, she hadn't done, or been through any of the things that make her the stronger character we see in the series now. The thought of her jumping into a relationship with Ryan, at this point in the series, seems just off. At first, I thought she was just using him to bait Jim, which I can imagine a bit, but yeah, not to this extent.

And Ryan. I like that you justified his douchieness. I'd probably be a bitch if i had to work with michael scott too. And in S1-3 he was half way normal. It took my brain a while to work its way around the dynamic they have now in the series - where Ryan and Pam seem to hate each other - to where you're portraying them to be. But yeah, all I could think about when I was reading this at the start, was Ryan's continuous rejection of Pam when Jim left. Like Pam's smiles at him in the conference room and him being like "what". I don't know. It just didn't sit right.

But honestly, it was fantastically well written. I'm a die hard JAM fan, so I was never going to fall in love with this. So you did pretty well in trying to convince a lost cause.

So, I first read this back when you published it in, what, 2007? And then this morning, at, like, 5:00 a.m., I woke up and my first immediate thought was, "I need to find that Pam/Ryan story and reread it. That was fantastic." And now, several hours later, even though I haven't read Office fanfic in years, and stopped watching the show months ago, here I am, grinning from ear to ear because I just love this story so, so much. I want this Ryan. Also, I really need to bookmark it so I don't have to search forever next time.

you got it, i'm really split. so far i'm leaning towards liking ryan, because even though karen's acting so nice (what's with that? is she just drunk???) jim's still weird. but now they've forgiven each other, so i guess he's just too shy to say how he feels. by the way, just wanted to say somewhere, i'm so excited for the premiere this season!!

ooohhh! i can tell this is going to be a good one! i love the anger in it (how can a person love anger?!?), yet you can see flecks of romance along with it, a nice contrast.

i probably won't review for a bit, just reading, but it'll review again at some point for sure.

That was completely wonderful.

How it went back and forth, you could sense her hesitation and trying to choose between what her head thought she wanted and what her heart felt - just excellent. I LOVED IT.

I don't think I've ever reviewed this story before, so I just wanted to thank you for writing it. I re-read it all the time! I'm so glad you didn't give into popular opinion and have Pam end up with Jim, despite probably getting a lot of negative comments about that. I love any (fan)fictional universe where Ryan and Pam get together. I hope you write more Pam/Ryan things in the future!

Oh my god!  This story was amazing!  I don't even know where to begin!  For one thing, you got the characters down perfectly.  It all felt very... real.  And for another, you got me to like Ryan!  I guess he was the only one who was out of character, but he still felt real, too.  Like, if he had randomly become nice and developed a thing with Pam, this is how it would have gone down.

And there was just the perfect dosage of humor (so funny) and angst and the sexy stuff.  And you wrote in such a way that made me feel so empathetic for Pam.  I personally would have chosen Jim (poor Jim got rejected a whopping three times now by Miss. Beesley), but the way you wrote this story made me glad she chose Ryan.  And became friends with Karen.

So yeah, I just really loved this story.  I had to take a break from reading it to go to work, and I was dying all day to know what happened next.  And let me say one more time how real this story felt: it felt very, very real.

Thanks for the response to my response, DF. I get where you're coming from. I'll keep your explanation in mind and re-read the story in a bit. I can see someone acting the way you describe for Pam; maybe it's just hard to get my head around the actual Pam doing it, if that makes sense... shock to the system and all. Thanks for the response and the story!

I would definitely watch the Pam and Karen and Ryan in New York show.

One of the fun things that happens when you read an epic fic like this but after the fact is that you can fit so much of it in to what actually happened on the show.  And while sure, Pam and Jim are the ones that actually got together, I think you were strangely prescient with a lot of the mood.  Particularly hitting the graphic school element.  Nice work!

The writing is very good (thematic development, pacing, grammar/syntax, et al.) The dialogue is pretty much spot on also. This story has stuck with me for two reasons-- one facet that is very unrealistic (Pam) and one that's very realistic/in character (Jim).

The unrealistic thing is how Pam gets with Ryan. This story starts only a few days after her second, final breakup with Roy, and his subsequent attack on Jim. A lot of her thoughts are going to be about processing this and her whole decade-long relationship with Roy. A lot of her other thoughts are going to be on her long and conflicted (currently, especially) relationship with Jim: jealousy, anger, hurt, longing, regret and attraction. I don't see a lot of immediate mental room for jumping into a new sexual relationship with Ryan, whom she doesn't even know or like that well at the beginning of the cruise. Given that she barely even tried to contact Jim in Stamford when they're both single and obviously attracted, and she's just gotten out of things with Roy (the only man she's ever slept with), it's hard to see her doing much more with Ryan than just beginning to develop a glimmer of attraction, certainly not making a love nest and flaunting it in front of Jim-- all in a couple days... spurring a little jealousy in Jim, perhaps, but not closing the door to him or making the situation desperate. Even if she does have a fling with Ryan it's hard to see her, after only a few weeks or a month, not even being able to perceive a possible relationship with Jim anymore, after years of wanting it on some level, at the end when he is newly single.

On the other hand, if you can take the budding Ryan relationship as a given, then Jim's behavior and the alternate-universe final outcome are intriguing, because Jim's conduct is very much in character, even though he seems like a jerk. Same character + different circumstances = different outcome. In the show, Jim breaks up with Karen and then comes back to Pam without 'holding onto the safety rail'. Be he has heard Pam's none-too-subtle Beach Games confession, Pam is single, and Jim has a lot of good history to draw on. So no safety rail but he knows the chances are good. Here, he makes the pathetic, jerky deal that he will break it off with Karen if Pam promises in advance to be waiting for him. It seems like his character is very different from canon but really the only thing that's changed is the external circumstance of Pam's new hookup with Ryan. It's just too much for Jim to handle given their history.

It reminds me of another fanfic (Nearing the Edge) where Pam has a car breakdown while Roy's out of town, a few days after the Booze Cruise, leading to Jim making his Casino-night confession much earlier, allowing him to stay in Scranton while Pam processes Jim vs. Roy, and eliminating the whole Stamford/Karen path. Funny how little random things, beyond anyone's control or even knowledge, can change the whole course of history! So I like this story for illuminating this truth.

Author's Response:

Wow!  First off, thank you for this thoughtful review, I really appreciate you taking the time to explain what you did and didn't like about the story (instead of just - "This is totally not Pam! You suck!" haha).  I really liked what you said about Jim, and how even this isn't the Jim we normally see, it COULD be him, given the situation.  Fanfic is all about circumstances, in my opinion, and putting characters you love into new situations, so I'm so happy that you could see this Jim (I know quite a few people had trouble doing that when reading this).

As for Pam, I think we're approaching her differently.  I completely see where you're coming from - how could she jump into something so quickly and shut off the possibility of Jim without fully knowing what could have been there, right?  Basically, how I envisioned it was that Pam has spent her entire life with one guy, and the only time she's had to be single has been spent mooning over someone who supposedly isn't interested anymore.  She gets back together with Roy, which ends up being an obvious mistake, so I think at least for her relationship with Roy, it's really over for her.  I think that she would want a clean break from it.

And then there is Jim, who's got this steady relationship that she has to watch play out in front of her everyday.  So, when the possibility of Ryan comes up, he's someone she's never even thought about and it takes her by surprise.  It's a powerful feeling, when someone completely new is showing interest in you like that, which she's been lacking for such a long time.  So, when things start out with him it's just kind of fun, but she's still got Jim on the brain.  Plus, there's the added effect of being on a boat, away from work.  So I think all that combined could explain her fling with Ryan at least.  Then, when they get home everything is real again, it's not just vacation like it was before.  She has to go back to staring at Jim and Karen everyday, even if Jim is showing a renewed interest in her.

I guess what I was trying to convey was that the trip changed Pam's perspective a bit (like with Jim's character - it could be all about circumstances).  Like, she's only had two options this whole time (Roy or Jim), but now there is this completely unexpected third option.  I think I just wanted the story to be about how, even though you can have this idea in your head of who you SHOULD be with, you could be wrong, and the right person could end up taking you completely by surprise.  It isn't until the very end that Pam makes a decision about wanting to be with Ryan over Jim because she's maybe afraid of letting go of what she always thought would make her happy, instead of taking a risk.  I think in that situation she might be even more prone to eventually taking that risk because she didn't take the risk with Jim at the end of S2, and regretted it.

Anyway, that is my completely rambling, probably incoherent response, but thank you so much for the review!  I'm glad you got something out of it :)
