I enjoyed Jim's tension being extended beyond the Money episodes, because what he disclosed to Dwight was serious. Insomnia, loss of concentration, profound depression to the point of losing awareness of simple necessities. As Michael correctly said in The Secret, "Look, Jim needed a relaxing lunch. He has been depressed." Jim was an easygoing, pleasant and largely unmotivated man. For him to lose it as much had he did really demonstrates the level of pain he was suffering inside. That kind of pain doesn't just disappear. He spent three years pining for Pam, and by the time of the Money episodes, he had only been dating her for several months. Of course, bringing up the past would signal a return of those dark days. Nice job. Only advice I would give is to separate out Pam's reaction from Jim's dialogue, so that the prose reads smoother. Other than that, I enjoyed this.

As fundamentally cheerful as S4 was, it feels like there had to have been some moments like this that we didn't see. Thank you for writing one.

"I would just go home from work and lay in my room and stare at the ceiling, and like I could feel how long my life was going to be" - really, all of Jim's dialogue in this is so cutting.

Stablergirl, because I like your recent stuff so much, I'm going back to read some of your past stories (I really haven't read THAT much fic yet . . . I swear) and I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED this. When Jim came out of that stairwell I could see all this brewing beneath his lovely surface. And when he kissed her in Money, I was actually surprised. So I really liked how this played out. Because I love the beauty of words, here are a few specifics (of many) that I liked:

  • It sometimes amazed me, in moments like this, how much we were still afraid of each other.
  • I had learned that fears could be dealt with like this. That sometimes they were as unsubstantial as clouds or bubbles or Shrute Bucks. Sometimes they were just unnecessary and all they did was hold me back from the things I wanted.
  • I felt my mouth pulling into that certain kind of frown that almost always meant I was about to cry.

    Oh, just great job!

Wow. This was so heartbreakingly sad that it truly brought tears to my eyes. Very nicely done. I liked how you tied the butterfly pendant in with her feelings.

    Author's Response:

thank you so much.  Yeah I always like a little bit of a metaphor ;-)  And I wanted to do something other than the butterfly emerging from the cocoon business, so I gave butterflies in the stomach a try.  Glad it worked and you liked it!!!! Thanks for the review.

I really like how you dealt with the emotional parallels between Jim and Dwight.  I thought that was a powerful moment in the show and I'm glad that you expanded on it.

Author's Response: thanks belsum!  I always love when you review ;-)

I loved this! I've felt the same thing about these opening episodes and especially the last one. It didn't surprise me in the slightest that Jim is still in love with Pam and this is it for him. I'm still waiting to see on-screen Pam make a big gesture and show that she's "all in" too. Great story!

Author's Response: Thank you! Yeah I think we're all waiting for that big gesture.  I want to see it so badly!!!!!! Anyway, thanks for reading and reviewing, I'm glad you're with me on this one ;-)

Break my heart, why don't you? This was heavy and beautiful and poignant and I've been where Jim's at, I've felt what he's feeling and man, you really nailed it.

You owe me some kleenex, okay? Beautiful, beautiful work.

Author's Response: lol aw ok.  Sorry to break your heart ;-)  Glad you enjoyed it, or felt it (if you will).  Thanks for the review!!

Ooh, Jim angst!  This was the scene I was waiting for in the ep, to be honest, and I was so relieved when the writers just kept it light.  Darkness is for fanfic.  I quite like this, although Pam's last lines ring pretty hollow.  What was the significance of the butterfly necklace, by the way?  I think I missed that.

Anyway, good job.  Sad Jim makes me bizarrely happy (not in season 3, please, though!)

Author's Response: the butterfly necklace was sort of a tie in to the butterflies in her stomach and how once she finally said what she had to say and heard jim out the nervousness and fear was gone, so she was only left with the literal butterfly.  Sorry Pam's words don't ring true to you :-(  But glad you liked the rest :-)

Vintage stablergirl...You make a dinner date seem almost like life and death while still being totally grounded in the characters' real emotions.  You do tortured Jim so well.  And hopefully Pam does him well too.

Author's Response: LMAO.  This review was awesome.  Wow I really enjoyed that.  Thanks brokenloon!!!!

Wow, that was really good. 'Cause I think Jim may end up expressing something like this on the show. Pam has gotten brave... but has she gotten brave enough to tell him what she really feels? Really nice story.

Author's Response: I hope she's brave enough, but I have a feeling we're going to get some tension back in our lives...  Maybe not, you never know ;-)  Anyway, thank you so much for the review!!!  I'm glad you enjoyed it.

i have to say that the x-files reference at the beginning got me way too excited about the possibility of mulder-esq angst! and the story did not disapoint! i loved this! i mean, i love fluff as much as the next person, but total angst, whew, i can't even explain! ok, i'll stop rambling now. you're amazing, this story was amazing, angst is amazing. thanks for sharing!

Author's Response: lol yeah XF!!  I feel like I can't even help putting a little Mulder into everything I do ;-)  Glad you liked the story and the angst!! And ramble anytime, I loved this review.

Wow! I loved it! I really felt like Thursday's ep was like a coming-home of sorts for Jim and Pam.  I just really loved that we were able to see some sort of depth to their relationship that's been missing so far this season. And I'm so glad that you carried it over from the show and worked it out here. Wonderful, achingly lovely story!!

Author's Response: thank you!!! yay I'm so glad you reviewed ;-)  Yeah I'm hoping there's more of this depth and closure for Jim and Pam on the way and we'll get to see it, cause I'm so addicted.  Clearly.  (Would I be here if I weren't?)  Thank you again! I'm glad you liked it.
