I like fics that let Jim and Pam have major foibles, making them fully human in ways we all are. This is a good example.

Just felt compelled to read this again - and I still think this is incredible. Fantastic job!

P.S. - I don't mean to nag, but are you going to continue Cardiac Care? You've written such beautiful chapter already, I can't wait to see how it continues!

Author's Response:

Thanks!  It's always nice when people leave take the time to leave a review for an "old" finished piece.

Yes, I'm still writing Cardiac Care.  I've committed to finishing it my May 1!

So, on my way to FINALLY read Cardiac Care (since you have a firm date of completion,) I wanted to read some of your other stuff first and I'm glad I chose this one :)

I read it long ago, but it was a pleasure to re-read. I love this part "... And taking care of her is all he really focuses on. He just keeps looking at her and saying She’s perfect. She’s just perfect.”

Pam drew a deep, shuddery breath. “I look at them and I think he was mine first. I had him all to myself and now I have to share him with you – forever. What is wrong with me, mom? What kind of person thinks that about her three day old daughter?..."

It's sad, but I think a lot of mothers feel this way (I know I did.)

And this- “Everything I do or say sets her off. The house has been full of crying pretty much all day.”
Yes, Jim, my husband knows that feeling, too! lol

Wow!! So perfect! What a twist! I was expecting a Jim and Pam thing but her mother being involved is AMAZING! WOW! So, so perfect!

Pam, trust me, I've babysat for over half my life, and I pretty much make a career out of it. But I know that I have absolutely no idea about what to do when that kid is born. So um, I'm just saying, you'd be screwed even if you were the world's best babysitter.

Aww, I've never met a Rachel Halpert in any of the stories, but that fits perfectly.

Anyways, Pam, this story just proves why I like to wait until they are a few months old. Much easier, and much less breakable.

RE: my name; those numbers are my wedding anniversary. I figured if I was going to announce myself as a John Krasinski fan, I better make sure my husband was in there somewhere.

I would LOVE to see an update to Cardiac Care, but I won't nag...

Author's Response:

Ah, a wise woman indeed!  I notice Krasinski comes first though...

I'm actually working on the next chapter of CC tonight.  For real.  LIke the one I'd need to finish up if I actually want to post it instead of just having it hang out on my hard drive for a few months.  The lunch scene on Saturday afternoon.  Hope to send it off to the beta posse in a couple of days.

I really liked this! I'm a fan of JAM babies and I don't think I've read a fic quite like this. I do wish you'd continue... just think of all the angst you could saturate us with if Pam had post-partum depression! Ooh!

Can't you uncomplete a fic? Come on, all the cool kids are doing it!

Author's Response: I'm really glad you liked my little drabble!  But tonight I am writing the next chapter of Cardiac Care.  Finally have actually gotten back to the keyboard.  This one's done.

Wow, you made me actually login!  What an unexpected and creative take on this challenge, and so well done.  I loved that you incorporated Pam's insecurity with children into this, and it was very believable, as was Jim's exasperation.  You ended it so perfectly with that reassurance to all of us that things were going to be alright.  So well done, and thank you!

Author's Response: Wow to you, Annika!  Thanks so much for the really positive review!  It is really great to get detailed feedback.  I really, really appreciate your kind words.

Well done, as always. I've really missed your stories...

Author's Response:

Thanks jkfan9989.  (Do those numbers have some significance??)

I'm glad you enjoyed.  I keep thinking about writing Cardiac Care.  Not quite the same thing as actually doing it though.  I hope to post soon.

I almost passed this by when I saw "angst", but I'm a big fan of yours so I gave it a read. I'm so glad I did - what a perfectly perfect little family story.

I absolutely loved this:

“I look at them and I think he was mine first.  I had him all to myself and now I have to share him with you – forever."

Great job on this very creative piece!

PS Any chance of an update on "Cardiac Care" anytime soon??

Author's Response:

Thanks so much, kaystar.  I'm glad you braved your way past the angst label – and liked the story.

Yeah, yeah, there's always a chance of a Cardiac Care update.  I feel like the boy who cried wolf.  I'll get the next chapter posted sometime!

aww, sad.

but lovely (:

Author's Response: Nah.  Not so sad.  Everyone will feel a wee bit better after their naps.  And grandma will have everyone relaxed in two days time!  Like I said in another review response, eventually your hormones are balanced again and life is good.  You just gotta live through a few hellacious days to get there.

VB, have you been hanging out in the Parenting & Pregnancy thread?  Glad to see you writing & posting again.

I do think Pam still worries about how she'll do with children of her own.  Let's hope we get to see  ;o)

Author's Response:

IS there a Parenting & Pregnancy thread??  I do agree with you.  I think Pam worries.  I see parenthood just coming naturally to Jim but Pam having to struggle a bit with it.  (But you just read my story, so you knew that!)

Oh, goodness. My now-14 month old was having trouble nursing for the first couple of days, and we both cried a LOT for that first week. You capture that desperate, exhausted feeling very well. Nicely done!

Author's Response: It's been 19 years but I still remember that desperation & exhaustion.  I'm glad it rang true for you.  Thanks.

I was not expecting this at all. What a wonderful little gem. I saw angst and I was afraid to click it but I'm really glad that I did. You've created a very believable concept here from the show's history.

I love Pam's take charge mom, Pam's fear, and Jim's uncertainty. Great last line as well. Thanks for the read!

Author's Response: Oh, yay!  I'm so glad that I surprised you.  Thanks for taking a moment to leave a review and letting me know what elements of the vignette worked for you.

I have to admit, I was wondering where this story was going during the first half until I read this heartbreaking and completely realistic sentence: I look at them and I think he was mine first. I had him all to myself and now I have to share him with you – forever. What is wrong with me, mom?

I'm so happy with the direction this story went compared to the other recent "He Was Mine First" fics that have been written. A very fresh, true take on how that phrase could be applied to Jim and Pam. My Mom told me she felt the same way when I was born and I've always feared I'll feel the same way when I have children. Thank you for this :)

Author's Response:

Thanks, Lux!  That was exactly the reaction I was hoping for!  I wanted to leave the reader a bit confused until Clare got to Pam & Jim's room.

I liked the other responses to the challenge, too.  This image of an insecure and jealous Pam just popped into my mind and kept rolling around until I wrote it down.  I really liked the challenge.  There was no way I could get it down to 700 words, though, try as I did.

You might feel this way for a while after you have children.  I remember being all freaked out that my husband wasn't holding our son enough.  (My personal fear was that "men never pull their weight.")  I was crying at him in our garage and all of a sudden it hit me that this was post-partum depression and I was thinking completely irrationally.  The realization helped but it still wasn't quite enough to dig me out of it.

Eventually, your hormones reach equilibrium again and life ... and your baby!  ... are beautiful.

This isn't finished, right? Please continue it! I love it!

Author's Response:

Nope.  Sorry.  The story is definitely a one-shot.  I don't need another albatross hanging over me like Cardiac Care!  I just forgot to tick the Completed checkbox when I posted the story.

Thanks for leaving the note!  I'm so glad to see you liked this little glimpse into Pam's post-partum depression.

Oh, how I like this, VB.  Great idea for a fic.  First, JAM baby--automatic win right there, and her name is Rachel, which I love.  The images?  Wonderful.  So realistic.  You know, this is the first fic I recall reading where mommy is jealous of baby.  I'm used to seeing it the other way around.  I love the imperfection.

It's not marked complete...dare I hope for more? ::crosses fingers::

Author's Response:

Hey, NanReg!  I was hoping I'd get a comment from you!  I love the name Rachel, too.  If I had a girl she would've been named Emily Rachel.  I thought of using Emily but just couldn't do that after Philly Jim.

I could definitely see our Pamela struggling with these demons as her chemical balance goes haywire post-delivery.  I'm really glad to see it is striking the readers as plausible.

This was awesome, VB. I love the different take on the challenge, and seeing someone explore a feeling that happens all the time and not many people write about. Well done and very in character. *claps*

Author's Response:

You crack me up with your little homemade emoticons, jazzfan!  *giggles*

I'm glad you enjoyed my little twist on the challenge.  It does happen all the time.  That post-delivery hormone rollercoaster is a bitch!

Hey, VB! I just love it when you explore Jim and Pam's family life...you write 'family' so well and with so much heart. Great job, Mrs!

Author's Response:

Thanks, BA!!  I like to think that Jim and Pam have wonderfully supportive families.  Those brothers on the show were imposters.  I'm glad you enjoyed.

This is such an interesting take on the challenge, this idea never occurred to me! I like it, can't wait to see how you continue it!

Author's Response:

I'm glad you liked it!  No more, though.  This is a one shot.
