I thought you did well with Jim in this chapter - he comes through clearly as someone who isn't lying to anyone as much as he's lying to himself, and you can see how he could talk himself into Karen being a step forward. His choice not to come to the show also feels less petty and more like an act of self-preservation here - this is very much *not* about hurting Pam and very much about moving on, and telling Pam in advance at least acknowledges that he knows her feelings about it.

Pam feels distinctly more like she's genuinely making progress here... feels like it's going to sting so much more this way, somehow.

Aww, too bad for Pam that Jim is unwilling to face that if he can't go to the art show he can't move on. But very good work on your part working through the emotional beats.

Oh I love the Mark mention - he’s not wrong.

“He couldn’t imagine it otherwise; he didn’t have the energy to.” This is Season 3 Jim all over. I feel like he’s kind of fallen into this thing with Karen and it seems simpler than any alternative so he just goes with it.

“he had always been her cheerleader” This whole section is kind of heart breaking. He’s always been her friend, but now there friendship isn’t what it was and he can’t even be there for her in that way. Ugh. Poor Jim.

“the way she used to smile when Roy” Ouch. Oh boy, that packs an emotional punch. I like that Jim tries to fix it a little bit. It’s nice to have his point of view and get a glimpse into his motivation for not coming.

I love that more people from the office have actually shown up at Pam’s art show. Thank goodness. Her glances at the door add a touch of angst.

Thanks so much for reading, and quoting! That makes me feel so good.

I am glad I am able to flesh out S3 Jim. And yeah, I always wanted him to have a friend to talk to during S3. And Business School was just so heartbreaking that I needed to fix it.

This was positively heartbreaking. I feel for Pam in this so much. While I understand where Jim is coming from, I'm not happy with him. I get it's self preservation, but dang I just want him to kiss her after her show.

Ah, I know. But l always felt super bad for S3 JIm, he was really struggling. So thought of cutting him some slack, haha.

I love the premise of this story and your writing is very good too! I've thought a lot about how Jim would react to Pam getting a boyfriend, or even being confronted with her dating while he was back in Scranton, so I'm really, really interested in how you'll have him react. Thank you so much for writing and I cannot wait to read the next chapter!!!

Author's Response: Thanks so much for reading! I am glad you like the premise. Writing S3 Jim is so tough!

Oh Jim, that hurts. Like I said clearly they're not over the other one but they're trying to force themselves they are. And it's just making for hurt feelings all around. Intersting to see that things are starting to get rocky for Jim and Karen. It makes sense since he knows in his head Karen should be great, but his heart is still telling him otherwise.

Likewise it's tough to read Pam being let down by Jim. It's great writing to bring out these feelings don't get me wrong. Very interested to see where we go from here.

What can I say, I always felt super bad for S3 Jim, poor thing was just trying so hard. And JK portrayed the conflict so well.
