::attempts to approach you in a cool, collected, un-Kelly-like fashion::

::probably fails::

So, uh, hi. First off, I have the biggest fanfiction crush on you in the history of all fanfiction crushes ever. I decided to start posting here after I read Talk and Prelude (erm, particularly Talk, hence the penname).

Second, thank you so much for finishing this story. I've read each of your stories repeatedly, and I was in the habit of forgetting that this one wasn't completed. Something of a letdown, yes, but then I'd just go read Talk again, and everything would be better. Or at least, you know, smuttier. Same difference?

Again, like everything else you've shared with us here, shows that you have a remarkable gift for language, phrasing, and characterization. The tension and humor are perfect. It floors me every single time I read your work. You should either be writing for the show or letting us know when your novel comes out.

Congratulations on your new little one. I'm sure life is hectic, but do drop in now and again, okay? If it would be of any help, know that you have a willing collaborator. Plus, I'm pretty sure that, working together, we could seriously make NanReg faint. And that would be awesome. :)

Author's Response:

Thank you Talkative!  I've been away for a while, so I'm afraid I had no idea that someone liked Talk enough to take a pen name based on it.  What an amazing compliment, to go with all the other pretty compliments you've paid me here!

I've just read Shotgun Wedding, which well deserves its pretty blue ribbon.  If you can guarantee that NanReg will do some comedy fainting, I'd love to collaborate with you on a story some time.

Summary: Why does he always have to say things that make her think of a hundred different 'what ifs'? How come half a minute of staring at him has suddenly made her rethink all her future plans?

Hey, you. I came in here to read (& re-read) the rest of your stuff after my third pass through "Feeling Green..." and I came across this. It's great - I love how you're handling Pam's confusion. There are a million little possibilities for what she was thinking/feeling during season two, aren't there?

This needs finishing. I will totally sic NanReg on you.

Author's Response: This is SO OLD, haha. I never got back in the mood and never figured out where to take this next. I was still testing the Jim/Pam waters at this point. Maybe I\'ll come back some day =)

Kells, this is great. It's so touching and so spare. And this - "He thinks it’s funny that they handle these things so differently. She makes small changes, one at a time, to get where she’s going, while he jumps forward with both feet without really thinking about how he’s going to land. He discovers that these differences, once frustrating to him, probably balance them out a little" is spot-on. Well-said. And Jim's "No, no. You should have. Really." made my toes curl. So there's that. :) Please keep updating regularly.

Don't you hate it when the chapter tries to kill you? I'm glad to see that you've emerged victorious - this is a fun story and I've been waiting for it to come back.

I love how you've written the characters (seeing Jim happy with his professional life is so strange, btw) and that little bit of steam at the end was a great way to start the day.

You also manage a nice balance between showing and telling, between what they're thinking and what they're doing. It's a difficult thing to do sometimes (esp. with Jim, in my opinion, as there tends to be a sizable gap between his thoughts and his actions), but it comes across very well here. Nicely done!

Author's Response: Yes, it drives me crazy when the chapter just turns on you like that ;)  I know it's strange to see Jim happy professionally, and I wanted to emphasize it here because I really wanted them both to learn how to be happy apart before they were happy together.  Sounds cheesy and very Dr. Phil-like, I know, but there it is.  Thank you so much for the kind words - I love hearing from you - you are one of the authors on here that I truly admire.  Thanks again, Talkative.

Dammit, Colette. I knew this was going to happen sooner or later. I'd keep posting parts of No Stairways Just Stairs and then you'd show up, being all awesome and... why are you so awesome, anyway? This is really fantastic - sweet and simple and sweaty. I figure if we all keep writing them happy and engaged enough happy and engaged residue will build up and it'll just happen. Right? Right.

Um, if you go check out my latest installment, there's a little present in there for you. Just a little one. It's pink and waterproof.

Author's Response: Dammit Talkative! It's an honor and privilege to have our fics posted side by side ;-) And yes to willing an engagement into being...let's all concentrate - maybe it will be like Jim moving the coat rack. I absolutely will checkout your latest chapter, as soon as I have a minute. Pink and waterproof? I'm intrigued. Many thanks!

Strange, since they're ostensibly about Pam, but I love the way that so many of these summer stories lightly touch on Jim's confusion about his own future. I'm learning from personal experience that it's difficult to write, but you do it so well here, Colette. Also, I love your Mayan princesses, the rain, and the kiss on the subway. You've done it again.

Author's Response: Yeah, I wanted Jim to seem still unsure, but just beginning to find his footing - and Pam to be encouraging, but trying to give him the space/time he needed. (Though maybe a bit frustrated by his always prioritizing her needs over his own.) Frankly, I'd like a Schrute buck for every smart, capable person  I know who was still sorting all that out in their late 20's; and 'career' wasn't always what ultimately defined them.  But, I digress. Thanks again, Talkative - appreciate all the reviews!

"He sighed faintly, then as if driven by some unconscious self-protective instinct, moved his hand from where it was flung over his head to his belly, wrapping it loosely around his early morning erection."

Good God. I can't - I can't even speak. Such a mental picture.

This chapter was great, Colette. I'm really looking forward to the next one.

Author's Response:

See now, Jim holding that spring roll in his hand brought that mental picture right to Pam's - okay, my - mind. Calling Dr. Freud.

Glad you're still enjoying Talkative. This is a fun one to write. Thanks much!

Summary:

This will be a series of self-contained chapters (oneshots) exploring various "what ifs" pertaining to episodes spanning seasons one through three. Each chapter will examine how things would've gone differently if either Jim or Pam had responded to a given situation the way that (most) fans had wanted or almost expected them to.

For example, the first chapter focuses on how things would've happened differently if Jim had confessed during those twenty-seven seconds of silence on the booze cruise when we were all holding our breath and hoping he would.

Among the other chapters I have mapped out: What if all the reminders of Jim in "Gay Witch Hunt" had provoked not a small, sad smile from Pam at the end of the episode, but rather, had motivated her to take action -- drive to Stamford to see him for the first time in four months? Or what if Jim had responded to Pam's text in "Diwali" via a post-Jagermeister phone call? What if Jim had walked in on Pam crying at the end of "Back From Vacation"? (...You get the idea.)

Again, though, each chapter will be confined to an episode, so it will essentially be a series of oneshots that are unrelated to each other.

Re: your comments at the start of chapter 8 -

I've had two major relationships in my life. One ended because of some massive emotional/intellectual changes that were sparked by higher education. The other has only gotten better as he and I have gone to school/branched out/explored our individual interests. Because of these experiences, I am completely able to buy Pam and Jim going either way (though it would kill me if you're prognosticating here). Unfortuately, I think Jim's assessment in this chapter of Pam's inability to put herself out there during S3 is absolutely correct (and wonderfully written, btw). It's one of the less appealing (yet totally understandable) aspects of her character.

Keep going. It's delicious torture.

Author's Response: Talkative -- sounds like our relationship histories are similar ;-) Maybe that\'s why I can see this story playing out like it does, even if it is a bit of a stretch for some. Anyhoo, Pam\'s inability to put herself out there for Jim is personally MY biggest problem with their relationship (and Pam specifically), and perhaps that\'s what feeds my energy to write this story. I just never saw them deal with all that season 3 hurt (I know a lot of people think Jim was douche-y during season 3, but I have never blamed him one iota. That guy was in serious self-preservation mode.) And if they never dealt with with the hurt/guilt/confusion/etc. up front, out loud . . . that could lead to some serious sh*t down the road (i.e. this story). So . . . let the torture continue. ;-) Thanks so much for reviewing!

Despite being a massive sap who insists on always leaving Pam and Jim basically happy and together, I have total and absolute faith in their ability to drive their relationship into the ground via lousy communication and all-around cowardice. I have the same amount of faith in your ability to knock this one clean out of the park. I'll be eagerly awaiting updates.

Author's Response: Talkative, thanks so much for giving this ugly stepchild of a story a chance. Hopefully your faith in me will be deserved. I agree, though . . . these two have always had crappy communication and terrible timing. I don\'t think all that just magically disappeared when they started sleeping together. ;-) (BTW, I\'m a massive sap, too . . . this story may leave scars on my heart.)

Oh, wendolf. You've got me, hook, line, and sinker. Emily's great and your Jim is just perfect. I'm really looking forward to her reaction to the DVDs (how strange would that be?) and their first kiss was darling. Your story is making me reflect on the less-than-healthy aspects of Pam and Jim's relationship and I'm feeling oddly... happy? for Jim's being able to move on. Weird. :)

Author's Response: Wow, thanks so much talkative. I so love your writing, so the fact that you like this story is so flattering. Yeah, the DVD watching would be so surreal, wouldn\'t it? I\'m working on that part today... And yes -- even though we all love Jim and Pam, they\'ve had their share of disfunction in their relationship that can\'t be ignored (at least in this fic). I like to think that they both learned a lot from their mistakes... Anyway, thank you so much for reading and for your review!
