nqllisi wrote the first line to belsum in an e-mail, who then replied with the second line. It was pretty easy to finish from there. The title is from a book neither of us have read.

She was using him as a life raft, not letting herself acknowledge that he could barely keep himself afloat.

It was why he ran away. A drowning man will save himself first.

Miraculously, though, she never did sink. Neither did he.

When they met again, for real, they were both standing firmly on the shore.
