He was expected somewhere tonight. When his mother had asked him to come the day before to help her move tables and peel apples for the pies, he’d been looking forward to spending the night, eating some of her good home cooking, and even watching the stupid parade in the morning with his dad. But then he remembered there would be relatives there he hadn’t seen since the wedding had been called off.

He figured he could just as easily drive up tomorrow if he asked his brother to help his mom tonight. He let Darryl buy him another beer.
