    So I had this vague memory of there being featured iTunes playlists for the main characters and after a google search I learned I remembered correctly! Don't quote me on this but I think the actors themselves may have selected these songs for their characters and added comments. Here are Jim and Pam's lists (list from March 2006 so right during Season 2):

    Jim's playlist (aka mid-aughts male indie angst!)
    1. “Let the Cool Goddess Rust Away” by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah!: “The best new and in a while. Plus, the lead singer has an odd voice that drives Dwight crazy, so I play the album a lot, in the office.”
    2. “Sing” by Travis: “I’ve gotten a lot of my friends into this song. It’s nice to dance to. Or, like, sway to.”
    3. “Rebellion (Lies)” by Arcade Fire: “My roommate and I drove to Philly last month to see them play. They’re amazing live.”
    4. “When I Laugh” by The Glands: “If the Rolling Stones were from Atlanta, and like 60 years younger, this is the kind of music they’d make.”
    5. “Chicago” by Sufjan Stevens : “Heartbreaking and great. Plus, I love any song whose title is a city that isn’t ‘Scranton.'”
    6. “Rich Girl” Gwen Stefani ft Eve: “Yes, I am a music snob, but my ex-girlfriend Katy put this on a mix for me when it came out, and I got hooked. Try to listen to this song without smiling and/or singing along. I dare you.”
    7. “California Stars” by Billy Bragg & Wilco: “There’s about 15 Wilco songs I’d like to put on this list. But that would be boring. So: buy everything Wilco puts out.”
    8. “Ghost” by Neutral Milk Hotel: “Buy the whole album. It’s incredible. If you don’t like it, I, Jim Halpert, will give you a free box of Dunder Mifflin 8 1/2×14 legal pads. (Then I will be fired. So, win-win.)”
    9. “A Quick One, While He’s Away” by The Who: “An epic 8-minute story. Used to perfection in Rushmore.”
    10. “Try Not to Breathe” by R.E.M.: “I can’t believe I chose a song from the same album as one of Dwight’s songs. What are you gonna do?”
    11. “Gone for Good” by The Shins: “I know it’s ‘trendy’ to be into the Shins, but I don’t care. Their new album, due in a few months, is my #1 looking-forward-to-it release of the year.”
    12. “Drunk by Noon” by The Handsome Family: “A really depressing, but very pretty, song. I think about the title every day, Monday through Friday, around 11:45 AM.”

    Pam's Playlist
    1. “The Way I Want to Be” (no artist listed but I think by Village Green?): “These guys write perfect 3-minute pop songs. Impossible to listen to without dancing.”
    2. “Me and Julio Down By the Schoolyard” by Paul Simon: “When I was a kid, my parents used to play the Concert in Central Park album all the time. Everytime I hear, ‘Gerry Niewood on saxophone,’ I think of my mom.”
    3. “Another First Kiss” by They Might Be Giants: “It just makes me happy. That’s all.”
    4. “Those Sweet Words” by Norah Jones: “I have this CD-playing alarm clock, and I wake up to this song every morning. It’s soothing and pretty — it sort of pulls me gently out of sleep. My fiance hates it.”
    5. “Angel” by Jane Jensen: “I like to listen to this song when I draw cartoons. I have a female heroine that I sketch sometimes. She’s an adventurer and I imagine this is her theme song.”
    6. “Through Any Window” by Wisely*: “This is my new favorite album. I like almost every song. But this one is probably my favorite.”
    7. “Wonderful Tonight” by Eric Clapton: “I know it’s cheesy, but it’s my song with Roy, my fiancee. Give me a break — we’ve been dating since high school.”
    8. “Phone Call #27” by Admiral Twin: “This is the only time where I like the sound of a phone ringing in my ear.”
    9. “Somewhere Only We Know” by Keane: “This has a really great lyric that kind of haunts me: ‘So tell me when you’re gonna let me in / I’m getting tired and I need somewhere to begin.’ That gives me shivers, for some reason.”
    10. “Somebody to Love” by Queen: “I love to rock out to Queen. When I was younger, my sister and I would dance on my bed and sing into hairbrushes like in that movie ‘Adventures in Babysitting.'”
    11. “One Down” by Ben Folds: “I love that this guy had a deadline for his record company hanging over his head and turned it into a song. It inspires me.”
    12. “At Last (Single)” by Etta James “This is going to be Roy’s and my first dance at our wedding. Kind of fitting, after our 42-year courtship.”
    * this is why I think the actors made these lists because Jenna was in this music video
