He decided for the thousandth time, to try to be whomever she wanted.

That rings so true - almost devastating, really. It just galvanizes so much of this season - him trying desperately to re-invent himself into this guy who isn't madly in love with Pam with Karen as his main vehicle to get there. But he knows better. And Pam at the end...so, so sad. In a beautifully written way, of course.

Author's Response: Thank you. I'm just haunted by how very, very tired Jim has looked in a few scenes. It's not just Pam- it's Karen, too, because he has to work so hard for this. Thanks, as usual!

oh, you do love to tug at our hearts, don't you?  Like greg daniels and co. don't twist the knife in hard enough??  :-)

Please give me a new chapter soon!

Author's Response: Glutton for punishment, eh, Moxie? Heh. This story is so hard to write. Thanks for the encouragement!

rather interesting story, so far.  i love the end, the single paragraph, Pam wondering about strangers and their directions.  speaks volumes.  respect.

Author's Response: Thank you! I hope I can keep your interest as I figure out where I'm going.

I'm so glad that you're continuing this. Way to go, Pam, staying firm with Roy despite...that. Loved all the details in their old apartment.

Author's Response: Thank you! I may need some help with the next chapter. You game?

He'd evaded, exaggerated, made light of, omitted, and hedged, but he hadn't lied until now. I love your explanation for all his behavior over the past months. Obviously, I'm not liking that Pam ends up with Roy but it was well told, realistic, and as you so nicely pointed out, not likely to come true! Nice one, lis.

Author's Response: Thank you, ma'am. I don't like it either, but maybe she just needed one last reminder of why she doesn't, in fact, live there anymore. Stay tuned...

Oooh, she went home with Roy??  Ouch.  I can't wait to see more... I assume you're going to write more...  I love this so far!!

Author's Response: Yeah; everyone I've ever known to break up after a long relationship has had at least one "relapse", so this seemed plausible. And yes, I'll write more. Can't leave 'em hanging like this! Thank you!

I can certainly understand how this happened, especially under the influence of a few drinks, but I hope it doesn't happen on the show.  I think sleeping with Roy again would mess up the progress that Pam has slowly made so far.  I think he will try to remind her of how good they were together, but hopefully it won't lead to anything else.  JMHO.

But am eagerly awaiting the next installment!  Poor Jim, all alone with the garter, knowing Pam and Roy probably left together.

Author's Response: Oh, I hope you're right! I don't want this to happen, but it played itself out so believably in my head that I decided I needed ya'll to share my suffering. Thank you for your eagerness!

Gah. Okay, it's a testament to how freaking amazing you are that I was actually holding my breath at Pam waking up in her old bed.  And god, I feel so much for them both - for Roy, who's trying so hard, and for Pam, who's still so lost even though she's taking steps forward (or trying to).

Is it wrong that I wouldn't hate her for it if this happened on the show?  Because it would be so real and so understandable.

Your last paragraph about Jim?  Killed me.  Of course the universe would shift that way -- he'd wake up alone on the very morning that she wakes up in her old bed, her old home.

Okay, so you must continue this.

Author's Response:

Yeah, I think all four of them are still in for a world of hurt before it all gets sorted out, and suddenly Roy is almost the most innocent party (quite a shift since season 1, isn't it?). Can you imagine the forum outcry if Pam would do this? Hee. You and I would be the lone voices supporting her, I think! Anyway, thank you so much for the encouraging comments. I hope you enjoy whatever I come up with next.

Oh my god. Oh my god. I love what you've done here - did not expect Roy to be the one to cut in, and when I realized it was him, I was initially disappointed...then you described him in such a way that I found myself almost excited for Pam.

I would pay money - lots of it (that I don't have) - to see this happen on the show.  So many of us have written fics set at Phyllis's wedding, but this one is really an original take, and one that is so compelling.

...Aaaaand I just realized there's another chapter - I am so out of here!

Author's Response: I love your comments, just so you know. :)  I don't want this to happen this way, but Roy's talking head in "Ben Franklin" just...they're setting something up and this is what belsum and I came up with. So I had to write it down. He's not a bad guy, but he (like your Karen) is in so much danger. I feel for all of them.

Oh, I'm hooked. Because I don't liver here anymore. How satisfying was that line? And even though it's so sad, and I can so feel Jim's pain at the end...it's so nice to read him acknowledging what he does - and doesn't - want. I really hope you'll update soon (yes, I'm insatiable!)

Author's Response:

Oh, thank you! I'm trying to figure out where to go here. I have a final destination in mind, but the next step is perplexing me. And yes, it was satisfying, but also sad. Poor Roy, you know?

I can't tell you how happy I am that you've continued this! This chapter was great. Nothing overdramatic over OOC. Just really simple and honest.

and Roy did not wash those hand towels. I am 99% sure [/Dwigt]

Author's Response:

Yeah, I'm with you. Handtowels are just not on Roy's list of priorities! :)

Thank you for the encouragement- I hope you like future chapters!

I think you've made this storyline very believable, and hopefully she would indeed conclude, "Because I don't live here anymore." Pam pressed her lips lightly to Roy's cheek. With a sad smile, she left without another word."  I am really enjoying this story; happy you decided to continue it.

Author's Response: Thank you! "Believable" is what I'm going for here, so that's very good to read! I'm going to try to keep going until things come to a logical conclusion or I get too tired (this is long for me!).

she went home with ROY.... while I can totally imagine it, its just one of those times I want to throw something at her.

Author's Response: Ha! I sympathize with Pam a whole lot, but she doesn't always do the things that will actually bring her happiness. I thought this seemed realistic, at least. :)

Oh yeah. Perfect ending. And I love Pam's rationalizing the little differences as "proof" that she's not regressing.

This better not happen, SHOW, do you hear me?!

Author's Response:

Seriously, SHOW. Hee.

Thanks, sweetie. Glad you like the end.

Can't wait to see what happens next? Hopefully not too much RAM though

Author's Response: Oh, I wouldn't worry. I write very little that doesn't eventually turn into Jim/Pam. :)

OH god, so much hurt and misunderstandings and trying to find happiness somewhere--even if it makes you do things you shouldn't. This was so real and painful and possible. Gives me the shivers, but it was beautiful. That last paragraph just really twists the knife in good & deep.

Author's Response: Oh thank you! Sorry about the knife twisting, but I guess I meant to do that, so...heh. "Trying to find happiness somewhere"...that's the whole theme, isn't it? For Jim, for Karen, for Pam, for Roy...all of them. *sigh*

Dude.  This story... is awesome.  What happens??? OMG, did Pam go off with Roy?  Does she go home with him?  Does she regret it later?  What happens?  I don't care if its AU, I gotta know.  This frickin' rocked.

Author's Response: Wow, thank you! It's definitely a departure from my norm, which was fun. I actually may have to continue it. We'll see. :)

scary stuff!!!  But I like the sniping couple.  ;-)

Author's Response: Heh. Yeah, there's definitely trouble in Karim paradise. I hope it's not too little, too late, though.

I know I'm worried too that the whole "wedding" atmosphere might get Pam and Roy thinking.  I'm also wondering if the news of Pam's broken engagement will somethow get "leaked" to Karen.  Oh well, lots to think about...thank God only a week to wait.

This fic was great and I could totally see it happening...at least Roy trying to cheer up Pam, since she'll be pissed seeing Jim and Karen together in such a romantic setting.

Author's Response: Yeah, I think either the Jim/Pam fans are going to squeeing or sobbing at the end of the next ep- a wedding is too dramatic of an occasion to go smoothly. Thank you!

That was great, even though all the miscommunication is killing me. I really, really, really hope Pam doesn't backslide with Roy, but I think you wrote it in a very believable way.

Author's Response: Thank you! The miscommunication on the show is killing me, too, but I think it opens the door for a scenario like this.

Oh my God. I love this. I mean, I hate the idea that it would actually happen, but I love it. It's one of those, "Gah! This could really happen!" moments.

Two things:

First, I freaked out at the point when Craig gets Pam a drink and returns "smiling greedily." I was thinking, "AH! He slipped something in your drink! Don't take it!" So I'm glad it didn't go that way.

Secondly, please continue this. I know it says you are done with this one, but I'm dying to see the fallout from this. Consider it?

Author's Response: Thank you! I actually may continue it, although I really hadn't planned on it. You all are very persuasive! :)

You know, after the episode last night and hearing all of the speculation regarding what will or will not happen at the wedding, I actually was hoping someone would write a story where Pam slid back to Roy, because it just seemed so possible and heartbreaking...and this is so good.  All of the misinterpretations and insecurities just...beautiful.  Oh, Pam.  Oh, Roy.  Oh, Everyone.  God, I hope this doesn't happen.

Author's Response: Thank you. I hope not, too. "Possible and heartbreaking" was excactly what I was feeling when I thought of it, so I am especially thankful for that comment. Fingers crossed, all together now.

Aaaarrrgggh. They are so sad and frustrating and...just as you've written it. The missed signals and incomplete/misread situations. I think in Pam's most forlorn moments she could stumble back to Roy...I hope that your writing it here (so well!) is a jinx for it to not actually happen on the show. So sad for Jim at the end. Having him holding the garter is the perfect poignant touch.

Author's Response: Thank you. Yes, let's hope this wards it off! I hope, hope, hope Fancy New Beesly doesn't let a few stumbles send her crawling back, but it would be as painfully real as this show always is. And poor Jim- always looking for her and never quite finding her.
