Wow, is this some wonderful writing.  Bravo!  The uncertainty and the Dickinson and the dialogue which captures them perfectly.  Wonderful work and I look forward to reading more from you.  So good:)

"Maybe the feathered thing doing loop-de-loops in her stomach is hope, and maybe those three words and two taps on the doorframe are all that it took to wake it up."

This was so perfect. It describes it so completely. Congrats on your first fan fic! I loved it.

I agree with the others: this is a well-done, believable, and refreshing take on the first date fic (I'm another who just cannot get enough of these, so I was excited to see this one). I loved Jim's question about just what she meant by "too far": you do a terrific job of portraying their relationship in all its nuances. Great character voices.

I was wondering the same thing as Colette: are we to expect more chapters? I certainly hope so!

“Oh.” A beat, and then: “You’re still beautiful.”

First off, that line rocks beyond reason. So good.

I've read a lot of first-date-takes, but this is easily up there in my favorites. You did such a great job capturing the tension and buoyancy of (what I would imagine) the night was like for them. Your detail with Pam's character was fabulous, and I enjoyed every word! -CH

A favorite line: Maybe the feathered thing doing loop-de-loops in her stomach is hope, and maybe those three words and two taps on the doorframe are all that it took to wake it up. *melts*

Now I know what a chapbook is (Wikipedia, best thing ever).

This is one of the first stories I've read in a while where I find Pam to be really believable as an artist -- looking for inspiration in realistic, accessible sources, talking intelligently about her process without sounding like she's reading a textbook.

I never get tired of First Date Fics.  This was fabulous!  I had butterflies in my stomach almost the whole time I was reading it.  I can't believe this is your first fic.  You did an amazing job. This is my favorite part:

“Oh.” He looks solemn for a moment, then pulls her into a hug.

“You’re probably right,” he says into her hair. They stand like that, eyes closed, listening to each other breathe. Then she feels him grin into her curls. “So, slow like we’ve already gone too far and I need to get my sorry ass out of your apartment, or slow like you’re going to let me make out with you for another hour and then send me home all sexually frustrated?”

“Jim!” She pulls back to glare at him, but his smile is infectious. “Ok, it’s the second one. But you have to stop doing the thing with your hands!”

I hope there will be more chapters to this story!

You had me at Emily Dickinson...how perfect for Pam.

This is terrific - as man first date fics as there are, this one feels really fresh. Great believable character voices - love their convo re: Jim being her patron (“Just something to illustrate what a Renaissance Man I am. Maybe something with me on a horse in a gilt frame.” Ha!) and so many other wonderful  lines. This one was especially touching: And just like that, she has her best friend back.

Just lovely and delicate and ironic/funny and sweet and hopeful - I think you've really captured that thing between them. (This seems complete, but you have it marked as unfinished - is there more?)

Author's Response: Thank you! It was intimidating to put this out there, because as you said, there are so many first date fics... and so many of them are awesome. Pam + Emily Dickinson got into my head, though, and I just kinda had to write it. rnrnAnyway, I wanted to respond to answer the question about whether this is finished or not. I had it marked as unfinished because I was playing around with a second chapter, but then I realized that I'm allowed to write more that one story! What a concept! I think you're right - this feels complete, and the ideas I was playing with are better suited for another story. So apologies to everyone for the tease (TWSS?), and thanks for giving the eleven-millionth first date fic a chance. All of the nice reviews really made my week.
