This makes S3 worth it. I know, I know, that Pam needed S3 to grow, to really realize what she wanted out of life (not just realizing she didn't want Roy, but what she wanted, not what she didn't want).... but, it still hurt. But, this is possibly what it would be like if it didn't happen. And I wouldn't like that.

(oh, and in case it wasn't clear, I liked the story!)

Author's Response: Thanks! I totally, wholeheartedly believe that Pam and Jim needed to be apart in order to be together (if that made any sense). I'm glad you liked it!

Wow, I really enjoyed this. I know everyone wants that perfect ending to Casino Night, but I really don't think their relationship would be as strong as it is now if that ending had happened. Pam needed that independence, something you really can only get by being by yourself, no matter how loving or supportive Jim could be. Pam would just fall into another bit of safety and she needed to feel unsafe and alone and challenge herself. And Jim needed that too. He needed to step away and not be so caught up in all the drama. And yes, even be a bit of a prick. It has made them stronger and you highlighted that here in many great ways. I love this final covnersation between them. It was rough but so true and so needed. Really wonderfully done.

Author's Response: It was kind of hard to write, but it's something I've always been convinced of. I'm so glad it didn't actually go down this way.

I can't say I was eager to read this, but I think it's a very plausable scenario of what would have happened if Jim and Pam had gotten together right after CN. I don't think they would have this many differences (but who knows?), but I wonder if they admitted to themselves that him going to Stamford and her being on her own for a while, even getting back with Roy for a minute, actually led them to where they are now. Then I realize that I think way too much about the relationships of fictional characters. Fictional, really? Not in my head. Sometimes I worry about Jim and Pam as much as I do about my own relationships. Anyway, good story, though I need to chase it with a shot of happy now.

Author's Response: I'll admit I wasn't totally eager to write this, it sort of got in my brain and wouldn't let go. And don't worry, they aren't fictional in my head either. Thanks for reading!

I have also always been curious about this scenario and man,you really nailed it with this piece. It made me ache in the most awesome way imaginable.

Author's Response: I have to do it...that's what she said! That's what she said!!!!!That Michael moment out of the way, I'm so glad that you liked it!

Oww. That was a sharp stab in the grief bone. But so good and SO spot on.  Impossibly high standards those two kids had/have. Glad to see a more realistic portrayal of what could have been.

Author's Response: Seriously impossible standards. I'm so glad you liked it!

I'm pretty much in love with the fact that my humble fic had something to do with this. Because I love this. It's heartbreaking and totally believable. Of course it would be hard for them if they had gotten together after season two. And I think you are spot on. Jim thought Pam was perfect, and if she hadn't screwed up and told him that she couldn't, he would never have let go of that assumption.

This is superb. Like, really, really superb. And I love that you leave it vague at the end. I would love to see another, but I would also be totally okay with it ending just like this, up in the air.

And gah! The part about knowing whether she had made the right choice broke me in half.

Author's Response: Well, thank you for writing that story! Nothing humble about it! I was worried about the vagueness, so I'm glad you liked it!

Ah, bashert ... ever since I wrote Philly Jim I've been less sure about Jim and Pam for exactly these reasons. Thanks for being brave and exploring these ideas, too. I sometimes think we're all so enamored by the idea of "soulmates" that we forget Jim and Pam are supposed to be (fictional) real people, not superheros or whatever. Great job.

Author's Response: Thanks! I summoned a lot of courage to approach this. I didn't want to be tarred and feathered. You lead the way, I just humbly followed. I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Wow this was amazing. Although I don't personally think this would have happened, your writing did make me believe it! Possible sequel?

Author's Response: Thanks!

Guh.  So true -- the only way out is through.  As painful as S3 was, it was necessary for both of them to work through or S5 never would have been possible.  Nicely done, Bash.

Author's Response: Truer words were never spoken. I'm glad you liked it!

I am SO happy to have lived through Season 3, because this just breaks me heart.  Great job, bashert.  As much as it hurt to read it, I think this was a true portrayal of what could have been.

“You should go,” Jim interrupted. “You should go to New York. Be on your own for a little while. Just please…please, come back?” Whew.  I'm spent.

Author's Response: If it makes you feel better, it broke my heart to write it too. Thank God for season 5 fluff. It warms the insides.
