First, congrats on posting your first story here.

 Originally I wasn't going to read this as reading about Jim being dead was just more than my poor heart could take, but today I had to read Chapter 4 to validate it, and I thought, wth, I'll read them all. And I'm glad I did because even though they are extremely sad, they are also very well done and very moving. I like this style, you say so much in so few words. Nice job!
