You write these characters so well!

I loved the honest conversation between the two of them at the end there. I'm so happy Pam disclosed the seduction plan and I'm thrilled Jim had an opportunity to explain himself finally. Baby steps, but this seems like the start of them finding their way back to each other.

Early on in this fic, Pam was giving me Peggy Season 1 of Mad Men vibes, but it's nice to see her evolving and gaining some confidence and clarity, just like in canon.

I can't wait for the next update!!

Author's Response: Ah, thank you so much! I'm so thrilled to hear you're enjoying it. And haha, it is definitely baby steps...I was obviously also totally thinking of Peggy when I was writing this. But yes: I want Pam to get her evolution too! Thanks so much for reviewing :)

Oh my gosh, what a chapter! I'm all about subtlety and little moments, and you painted such a picture that... wow. I can't even describe how thrilled I was to read about Jim and Pam's interaction... what effect they had on each other... I don't know how do you do that, but oh, I want more and more of them!
(Also, Dwight and Angela! I'm not sure if they're comedic relief here, but I'm dying to witness their 'double date' dinner).
Danny's still the worst. I like that Pam noticed that he touched Cathy's the same way he touched her (is there such a thing as a shut-up touch?). And 'traitorous heart' — oh, I love this expression!
Thank you so much for providing us such a delicious story! Fingers crossed for the following chapters :)

Author's Response:

Ah, thank you so much! That's so lovely to hear :)  Haha I find it hard not to write Dwight and Angela without making them comedic relief to some extent (but I'm sure in their own heads, there is nothing funny about this and they're the main dramatic love story).

And I think there is definitely a shut-up touch, lol. And I could see Danny being a pro at it. Thanks so much for reviewing!

You're really painting them as still great for each other. Case in point they both were agonizing over what to wear. The thing is they both kind of know it too. There's still a ton of denial and bit of hurt feelings to get through too. However despite all that they just click even through the tension. They're keenly aware of what the other one is doing. They can read each other like a book. They see how they react and at times don't react to others around them. It's all making for a ton of tension that's going to snap at some point.

Dwight and Angela are delightfully in character. Seeming harsh and brusque with everyone else. However for them, it somehow works. Don't ask me why it works, it's probably better off that we don't delve into that.

I do find something else interesting. Jim's complete dismissal of Cathy's advances while Danny has no problems smiling at her, calling her hunny, or touching her even in front of Pam. Pam is seeing that too. While it's already no secret there's problems aplenty in the Danny and Pam relationship here, it's just another thing to add into that. Nice work.

Author's Response: Thank you so much! And yeah, Jim and Pam being on the same page is always something I really love. I'm really enjoying writing Dwight and Angela haha, so glad you liked it (and yes, probably better not to delve lol). So I would say that Danny's interaction with Cathy is more about how slick he is than necessarily how interested in Cathy he is - but yes, still very different to Jim's reaction. And not something Pam's comfortable with. Thanks for reviewing :)

Progress, Basscop69. We’re making progress.

So, obviously we have to start with the fact that Jim is so utterly embarrassed about his appearance and about the fact that he only cares what Pam and his mother think. Like - what? Was he trying to be subtle when he put her on the same level as his mom?

I can’t say I’m surprised as Cathy’s attraction to Jim, although I am surprised that she’d flirt so openly with Danny right in front of her fiancĂ© - and Danny’s not exactly shutting her down.

I love how you’ve written the Angela and Dwight pairing. Both Jim and Dwight don’t seem to like Cathy, but Dwight just completely rejects her in favor of his work interview (and seducing Angela.) And I find it very interesting that the two of them shared the idea of seducing their counterparts in hope of finding out their intentions, while Jim and Pam are clearly uncomfortable.

I’m glad to see barriers being broken, even if Pam does lay down some ground rules. I didn’t think Jim would make her cry, but as I’ve stated several times before, Jim is her mirror. She’s not where she wants to be; furthermore, no one has ever asked if she’s where she wants to be. No one has ever cared.

So the two of them no longer hate each other, and they’re going to dinner, but I feel that Pam’s seduction techniques are eventually going to get thrown back in her face because she was being a hypocrite, and then Danny’s going to probably try to ruin Jim’s career. I hate seeing a hurt Pam, but there’s something about Jim that guts me. Maybe because I too have been in love with a best friend who’s with someone else.

Brilliant chapter as always,

BlindManCassidy

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! And yes haha, there is some progress. Slowly. On the mom thing, I actually didn't think about in from that angle: my thinking was more that Pam wasn't like the girls in Austin in finding anything wrong with his appearance (but then I thought, surely Betsy wouldn't have done either. But mainly just because she's his mom so of course she wouldn't).

I'm really glad you're enjoying the Dwight and Angela pairing! They are a lot of fun to write. And yeah, I quite liked the idea of them both thinking seducing their counterparts would be a good plan lol. It felt quite Dwight/Angela, but not very Jim or Pam.

So I will say wait and see on Pam's seduction techniques...

And agreed on Jim :( Thanks so much for reviewing!

How do I form thoughts. I literally have goosebumps after reading this. Holy crap. You write these characters so so so well, I am 10000% invested with every update. How well Jim can read her, how he knew she was going to cry and how he caught her before she crashed into the cart. How badly Pam doesn't want to fall for him or his "tricks" but she can't completely hold herself back either. I love it too much.

Author's Response: Oh thanks so much - that's so amazing to hear :) I'm really glad you're enjoying it! And yeah, how well Jim knows Pam has always been one of my favourite things about them. Thank you so much for reviewing!

I really need to stop reading these. They actually make me sick, how good they are.

It’s no secret I’m in love with Pam (a fictional character, I know - I didn’t try to!), so it really infuriates me how Danny treats her - again, like a trophy rather than a partner. I’m glad that review tore into him. He needs to be knocked down off his pedestal.

I mean, Pam clearly doesn’t want an article written about her - especially by Jim. Like I mentioned earlier, she doesn’t want any reminder that she could have a much better fiancĂ© and a happier marriage rather than a marriage just for money. But, of course, Danny doesn’t care.

I love how you wrote Michael. I seriously can’t see a difference between 60s Michael and 00s Michael. He’s even obsessed with Ryan!

I think that Danny is seriously underestimating Jim, just like Karen had seriously undeeestimated Pam in the college story. Obviously, he doesn’t see him as a threat - like Jim said, he’s handsome and is rich af. Why would Pam be interested in Jim at all? (Spoiler alert: he treats her like an actual human being.)

I’ll admit it; I’m hooked. This chapter has been my best birthday present ever.

BlindManCassidy

Author's Response:

Ah haha thank you - that is so kind of you to say! :)

I am also in love with Pam. I thinks it's fully justified. And yes lol, I think I might have made Danny slightly awful in this fic. I will say that Danny underestimating Jim is not necessarily for the same reasons as Karen with Pam in the college story - some of it is also that Danny's genuinely not a very possessive / jealous person. And maybe also isn't quite into Pam enough to care enough...

I'm really glad you enjoyed Michael, I always love writing him.

And happy (belated) birthday!!

I'm intrigued by the way the story unfolded! And about that dinner, Pam and Jim are about to have.
Oh, and also Karen's mention! I hope she's real and not just Jim using her initials :)
"Because she's had about enough of everyone assuming she's too clueless to notice when she's being used." I love this line! I also feel that it might be the first sign of Pam snapping (she deserves it so much!).
I said before that no one could be worse than Roy for Pam. I admit I was wrong. Danny's definitely worse... just in a different manner.
Thank you!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! Haha, I can confirm that Karen is real and it's not just Jim using her initials. Although that would be ingenious. And yes lol, I do actually think that Danny might have been worse for Pam than Roy was. At the very least, Roy loved her/was into her. Thank you for reviewing!

More questions and more intrigue (sp). Once more really getting the sense that to Danny and Robert, Pam is just there as pretty set decoration. Neither of them really care about her, her views, or basically anything. They only see the outside and the material. She's pretty and there's oil on her father's land. Anything else is inconsequential. Same with his willingness to let Jim take Pam to dinner alone. Along with that smile he gave Cathy last chapter it makes me wonder why he's so keen to not be around her. Clearly it's starting to get to Pam but she's still trapped in that guilded cage of hers.

So William is in prison for....something. Thus the Beesly's need the support of a guy like Danny. Even more reason for me to not like him. The kind of vulture who swoops down acting the hero, but one can tell underneath he's only out for himself and his reputation.

Nice Michael voice there.

Lots of conflicted feelings between Jim and Pam. Clearly they both still have feelings for each other but there's just a few to many obstacles in their way. Should be interesting to see where it all leads.

Also lest I forget, nice way to bring in Karen. She has history with Danny? Great way to start setting that up.

Author's Response:

Thanks so much! The reason for William being in prison will be revealed, haha. I'm really glad you liked the Michael voice, I do love writing him. And yes! on Karen. I felt like I wanted to continue the theme of Karen and Pam having similar taste in men...

Thank you so much for reviewing :)

I really like how you've portrayed Pam and Jim's relationship in this. They were childhood friends, but instead of going for they immediately 'click' again, they are very closed off towards each other and perhaps Pam has a bit of resentment towards him?

I also don't know why, but I was really confused on who K.F was, until I remembered "Oh yeah, Karen."

I also really like Dwight and Angela's interactions and relationship and it's very much like canon, where Angela slaps Dwight, and Dwight comparing her to animals.

Anyway, really enjoyed this chapter.

:)

Author's Response: Thank you so much!! And yes haha, I don't think I've ever really thought about Karen's initials before this point...Really glad you're enjoying the Dwight/Angela, I do love them :) Thanks so much for reviewing!

I have been really bad at reviewing lately but I am in love with this story. You write AUs so fantastically and this one is no different. I hate that Pam thinks Jim has an ulterior motive when he's made a point to himself to not go through her to get his story, but I get it. I would think the same thing if I heard Dwight say what he did. I can't wait for Pam and Angela to work together, that will be so much fun to explore and read! I love this story and can't wait to see how you make it all play out!

Author's Response: Thank you so much! That's so kind of you to say :) And yes haha, I want more Pam/Angela team-ups. I'm really thrilled you're enjoying it, thanks so much for reviewing!

I'm enjoying the development of Pam here. This feels very much like a people-pleasing Pam who could have emerged out of canon, and she's as poorly fitted to slick Danny and his expectations as she is to domineering, thoughtless Roy.

I love the notes of weirdness from Robert here. We really don't see much of him in fic, and you've actually made him work in this world.

Again, don't love Jim and Pam at cross-purposes, but I'm looking forward to seeing Jim v. Pam in spy games. Should be really fun.

Author's Response: Haha thank you - yes, I did sort of enjoy Robert on the show, just not as a Michael replacement? So I figured I could just have a fic with both of them. And yeah, I couldn't see Pam with Danny any more than I could see her with Roy. Thanks so much for reviewing!

I'm interested in the hints of how Danny and Pam came to be and what exactly his ulterior motive is, because certainly there's a pretty unhealthy dynamic here. Glad you got into that a little. (Too-slick Danny is fun to read about, even if I hurt for Pam, and I love the little dig at canon Roy you worked in.)

The Jim-Dwight dynamic is fun. You can really hear their voices here.

You did really well filling the Jim and Pam backstory here and make it feel rich and deep economically and organically. I know there's got to be a lot more history there, but I feel like I have a much better understanding of who they are to each other now.

Much as I don't *like* the idea of Jim and Pam operating at cross-purposes and having conflicting interests as they seem to here, it's definitely an unusual take on them, which is nice. It's interesting to me that he's able to identify the depth of her unhappiness pretty fast. It seems like our Jimbo is an insightful guy here... but it also makes me wonder if maybe Pam's take on him is more accurate than his inner monologue seems to acknowledge, and if he's gotten a little more away from himself than he realizes. You can definitely see his charm and how he might get some things out of people they would have preferred him not to learn, and that's a dangerous quality in a person if they're not disciplined about using it.

Author's Response: Thanks so much! That's really great to hear on the Jim and Pam backstory, thank you:)  And yeah, I was interested in that slightly slicker/charming side to Jim's personality and what it would be like if he was in a career he actually liked, and not around Pam. I think there are some similarities between him and Danny on that (e.g. in canon, he and Danny are good salesmen and Pam is not) - I agree that line between being insightful and manipulative is a dangerous one though. But I can promise Jim & Pam won't be at cross-purposes for the entire fic...

Okay, I'm really excited to see where you're going with this. Lot of good stuff at the jump here - intriguing set-up with a lot of room for interesting plot, different twist on a lot of the relationships (I love a good Jim-and-Dwight-as-bickering-partners story), a different sort of potential conflict with Jim and Pam than we usually see but still with that same deeply-rooted chemistry. Should be a fun ride! Glad you've taken it on.

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I am also a big fan of Dwight and Jim as bickering partners, haha. Their team-ups are some of my favourite. Thanks for reviewing :)

Really interesting chapter here. Pam's still clearly upset with Jim. However she's also got a conundrum going on in her head. Do the supposedly smart thing and go forward with a loveless marriage as Danny's trophy. Play the part but live in a guilded cage. Or investigate where her heart seems to be leading. Back to the boy now man she once knew. Esecially when she sees Jim as we know him from canon. Sleeves rolled up, tie loosened and all. Her interaction with Anglea was wickedly delightful. Keep an eye on them. Right, that's what they're going to do.

Jim doing everything he can to try and even just talk to her feels real in this setting. Not just for this story he's trying to dig up, but because he knows the pull of her is much to strong.

Robert seemed very in character as well. Odd comments and an obsession with all things powerful. Nice job.

Author's Response: Thanks so much! And yes haha, sleeves rolled up and tie loosened Jim is my favourite :D I'm glad you enjoyed the Pam/Angela interaction - that is *totally* all they're going to do. Of course. I found Robert a bit tricky to write as he's such a weird character lol, so that is a relief to hear! Thanks for reviewing :)

Date: March 11, 2021 06:24 am Title: Chapter 1

So I think I’m starting to understand why Jim hated Danny so much.

On a more serious note, I’m starting to understand why Pam is so unhappy and why she’s lashing out. Danny obviously doesn’t love her, and talking with Jim gave her a glimpse of what life could be if she was with a man who actually loved her rather than a man who saw her more as a trophy than a wife. So it’s not surprising that she doesn’t want to see Jim if he’s holding up a mirror to her and making her think about her life choices.

I might sound awful for saying this, but I hope Danny cheats on her with Cathy. Even with as little as we know about her so far, I think she’d make a better wife for him than Pam; Pam has already said she isn’t the type of girl who will want to be planning parties constantly and quitting her job.

Now obviously, Danny doesn’t think much of Jim; which is problematic time and time again for Pam’s boyfriends. At least, he doesn’t think much of Jim in terms of his ability to steal his girl; he definitely sees him as a threat when it comes to the Californias, which is why he’s mocking him and trying to make him look stupid.

I must admit, I was surprised that Angela was so civil to Pam. Perhaps she’s also feeling the effects of her partner-to-be, which is why she wants to investigate. And of course, Pam will join her, because she wants to use it as an excuse to spend time with Jim (or stalking him).

Also, will we ever find out about the accident? Is that why Jim and Pam drifted apart? Is that why he left? Is this going to be like what happened in college(minus the sex, because they were, like, thirteen in this story)?

Well done as always.

Running out of jellybeans,
BlindManCassidy

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! And yes haha, I think I may have done a slight character assassination on Danny...but they didn't develop him that much on the show, so I figure I've got free rein. And yep, Angela bonding with Pam may be directly linked to their respective feelings for Dwight and Jim :D

More will be revealed about the accident! But I will say that it's not directly linked to why Jim and Pam drifted apart - I didn't mean for there to be any big mystery there, he just moved to Austin when they were still relatively young, and they fell out of touch. (With maybe a bit of teenage angst about Roy etc via the letters in between). But I wasn't planning to give them an epic love story/extreme drama at thirteen, lol. I'm saving that for now...

Thanks so much, as always, for your lovely feedback :)

Oh, I love how regularly you publish updates! I think I have a new addiction now :)
It's so sad to watch how wrong things between Pam and Jim have gone (I suspect that 'the accident' might have had something to do with that... yes? no? don't tell!). Perhaps Pam has all the reasons not to trust Jim (she can't read his POV, ca she?), but it still hurts. Also, Jim's ankle thoughts... what did he say? 'It's just too hot'? Riiiight. (love this line, btw!)
And I'm excited to see that Pam and Angela are up too! Thank you :)

Author's Response:

Thanks so much! So, I will say (which I don’t think is a spoiler) - Jim and Pam did just fall out of touch after he moved to Austin. In my head it was sort of just a result of them growing up / leading different lives, and not having a chance to progress beyond childhood friends before he left. So there’s no big mystery there. But: more will be revealed about the accident...

And yes haha, I wanted a Pam/Angela team up for a change. Thanks so much for reviewing! :)

Damn, Basscop. Jim’s screwed it up already??

I can’t say that I wasn’t expecting Jim to royally screw things up. Pam, too. Even in 1960, they can’t just get out what they want to say. I shouldn’t be surprised.

However, I *am* a little surprised by the bitterness between them. I suppose that can be chalked up to the two of them going out of touch and having their friendship fizzle, but I didn’t think they’d be so bitter. But it’s not like they’re outright rude - they seem to be testing the boundaries and figuring out who’s to blame for fizzling.

Obviously, Jim makes friends with the two richest people - Robert and Susan - and obviously Danny sees him as a threat. But I wasn’t expecting Pam to be quite so upset with him, although I can’t blame her. Now she thinks he’s using her, thanks to Dwight and Jim’s notorious uselessness at explaining how he really feels.

As for Pam - she’s got to know why Danny is marrying her. It’s not for love, it’s for the goddamn oil. Shouldn’t that bother her? Or maybe she’s bothered more than she’s letting on, which is why she was so cold to Jim when he asked? Except Jim was totally crossing a line when he’d asked, so I’d probably be upset too-

Damn, there’s so much going on. And damn, I feel bad for asking but how long is this going to be because my stone soul cannot take much more angst-

Regardless, I know you’ll tie it all together somehow, in some way that makes exact sense, and regardless, you know I’ll keep reading even if it tortures me.

BlindManCassidy

Author's Response: Haha, I thought it might be better to get the Jim screw-ups out of the way sooner...? I promise they're not going to be this consistently useless. So in my head some of the bitterness on Pam's side is coming more from her general situation than with Jim specifically - and nervousness about whether he's the same as when they were kids, especially with how unhappy/out of place she feels with everything else in her life now. I really am going to try not to pile as much angst into this one though, lol. Thanks so much for reading and reviewing! :)

Not a fan of Danny here. But then again I'm usually not a fan of Danny. He just seems to slick. Treating Pam like a trophy not like a partner. Calling her scatter-brained. Barely asking if she's okay after the wine celler and then seeming to focus more on the material side of things or how she could impact him rather than really caring about her. Espeically with the info that Pam's land has oil. Just seems sleezy to me.

Geez Dwight, could you be a little less Dwight-ish for like ever? This feels very much like early seasons Dwight. A Dwight that is very hard, goes full bore on things. He hasn't had his hard edges rounded off by Jim constantly taking him down a few pegs. Feels like he needs that.

Jim and Pam are just full of all sorts of tension. They have history that makes this story really interesting. It really feels like the spark they had as kids is still there. However it's been a bit smothered by time, distance, and circumstance. So there in the wine celler it feels like they want to blow some oxygen on that spark, but as always, something gets in the way. Another misunderstanding, another time they don't let the other one explain themselves. Nice chapter.

Author's Response:

Thanks very much! Yeah - I am also not a huge fan of Danny. To be fair, I might've made him worse in this fic. But he didn't call Pam back, so...

And yes, Dwight does need that lol. It's good for him. So I did think that I was going to try not to make this fic another never-ending series of Jim and Pam not communicating with each other. But I may not totally succeed.  Thanks so much for reviewing! :)

I read it and have so many questions (I keep them to myself for now, but I'm sure you'll give all the answers when the right time comes). For the record: the way Pam was thinking that she didn't know Jim anymore and how they were catching up with each other lives (and how it ended! ugh, Dwight...) have already made a few cracks on my heart, but I don't want you to stop!
Oh, and I LOVE how you included canon moment's into this new world: Angela's slap, 'engaged ain't married,' Costa Rica...

Oh dear. I fear that I already know what might lie in store for poor Pam and Jim.

I had committed myself to not looking at your stories for a while, since I was writing my own. Then you published the first chapter of the men’s perspectives on Pam, and I was hooked. Same with the women on Jim.

And now, it appears that I’m hooked on this. But - you can’t blame me! Jim and Pam as childhood best friends who are reunited when Pam is engaged? 60s? Journalist Jim? I mean - what am I supposed to do?

If it is not apparent already, I enjoyed the first chapter. It is a nice introduction to the new versions of Jim and Pam, and I am intrigued already and interested to see how they are expanded further.
