His question seemed just as focused as his gaze had been a moment earlier. She kept her eyes on the table as she answered so she wouldn't have to see his reaction.

"Um, yeah. Well, I mean, I'm engaged, so, yeah."

"Oh."

"Yeah."

"Really? I mean. I didn't see a ring or anything..." he trailed off, and she realized with a start that maybe this hadn't just been a casual kind of friendship lunch for him.

"Oh, no. I know. I... I probably should've said something."
