Your last line is perfect! It reminds me of when Jan asked the cameraman if he had a light (Boys and Girls?).

Nice type-A Jan here - trying to get to the bottom of things, keep things exciting, get professional help, etc. Her voice really comes across well in #s 3 and 5. Great work!

Author's Response:

Jan does "on the edge" like no one else on the show!  Since you've pegged her as a type-A personality, now I'm imagining her with her little 3x5 cards, listing the Plan of Action for her marriage to Gould.

Thanks for reviewing!

Summary: It takes a full week before her new apartment even starts to look like home, and longer before it starts to feel like home. Set in the limbo between seasons 2 and 3.

Very nice - I like the changes you made, and your additions do a great jobs of clarifying the timeframe. Also, I like what you added at the end that gives us the link between sad/scared Pam and content/not-scared Pam. I forgot to mention it before, but I really like that you have Pam neglecting to use drawing as an outlet.

Author's Response: Yay!  I'm so glad you like it.  You were definitely right about the time frame - I confused myself when I went back and reread it.  And lack of outlet - I think that for a while, you just have to sit in it and wait for the worst of it to pass, and even things she enjoys doing would have just sucked.  Because, you know, she was not ok.  Anyway, thanks :)

Oh, Erin. This may be my favorite of all you've written. From the big things, like the hushed, tactile atmosphere you create, to the little things, like not using the same word twice in a paragraph... it's just brilliantly written.

Amazing: an ear pinned to his heart... locusts and sirens and neighborhood dogs... the tips of her fingers finding the spaces between all of his ribs...

Keep writing forever, please :)

Good awkward small-talk. I got a really good feel for Pam's frustration in her 2-word replies. These two are definitely like a copier that keeps jamming - nice premise!

Author's Response: Yep, sadly, they are like a copier.  Thanks for taking time to comment!

Like paperclips or torn pieces of paper, but not.

Nice. I like the atmosphere you set up at the beginning here. I found it resolves a touch too quickly for me, but your imagery, as always, is beautiful.

What I don't understand is why you don't have more reviews!

"...it's completely inappropriate, and incestuous."

Hee, spoken exactly like Michael, as though the incest was an afterthought.  I love his description of Jan's behavior!

Author's Response:

Totally.

I wrote this back before I really had a clear picture of Michael and Jan's shall we say - dynamic?  I think it's sort of the way I wrote it here - and sort of sick and twisted and S&M-y.

Now there's an idea for a fic. ;)

Yes! Michael's love of Harry Potter.  You know he devours each book.  Eeeee, he probably writes HP fanfic :/

Author's Response: YES!   OMG.  Can you even imagine???   All those pairings.  The slash.  Michael's brain would explode.

I would love to hear Michael say "brethren" on the show.  So formal :)

Is this still a 5-chapter story?

Author's Response:

Shan when I saw you were reading this I almost had a panic attack.  OK - that's being dramatic.  It was more like "Oh shit.  She's going to find out it isn't finished."  LOL!

I'm working on the ending now.  It's still coming sooooooooooo slooooooooooooowly...but I'll get there eventually so stay tuned!

Your second paragraph really brings across the fine line Pam may have been walking there -- can she take anything he's just said at face value, or is he just tipsy/euphoric/post-breakup upset? The next paragraph reinforces the uncertainty before thee fourth gives us the relief of a corner turned, a path chosen.

Extremely insightful, as always :)

I like this because it incorporates everything that we now know Pam is capable of, without having to live through season 3 to get there!  :)

Seriously, though, I especially love the beginning with Pam trying out her new self to a mirror fogged up enough that she still doesn't quite have to own what she's doing.  Before I got to the end -- and Pam moved from fantasy to reality -- I had this thought: wouldn't it have been interesting if her initial reaction to Jim on the subsequent Casino Night had been disorientation, as though she suddenly couldn't remember whether her fantasy had been just fantasy.

Again, terrific insight and dialogue.  At the end, Jim seems on the verge of a horrific realization - he and Katy could make the same mistake and think it was the right thing to do.  Awesome chapter.

Again, just perfectly rendered.  I always feel like I'm in capable hands when I open a chapter of yours.  Have you ever considered writing a novel? Just curious...

Author's Response: Thanks so much for that, nomadshan!  Yes, I'm working on a couple of things, but I love Office stories for a change of pace, and also because the characters are sort of pre-built, so you can use it as a bit of a sandbox to try out things.

Reviewer: nomadshan Signed 10

Yeah, just lovely.  Again, I so envy your pacing.  Will try to take notes :)

I particularly liked the subtle contrast of the daytime scene to the others.  Your prose let my mind fill in sounds and colors that made the scenes seem (as they did to Jim) as though they happened on different days -- traffic noise and fountain spray versus the almost womb-like insularity of Jim and Pam.

Did that sound gross? (she asks the pregnant lady)

Well, all that to say thanks for another beautiful chapter.  Best of luck with all of the life changes you're getting to experience now.  When you feel like writing again, it will be that much richer.  :)

Author's Response:

Thank you, nomadshan!   Hee hee, "womb-like"... no, I am now immune to being disgusted by any talk of wombs.

Thank you for pointing out the contrast between the scene in New York and the moments in Pam's living room.  I tend to try to write what I "see" in my head, and I think the reason the New York section had such a different feel was that the "camera" (if you will) was pulled back to the distance between two people who are breaking up in a public place, while the other scenes were from a much more intimate vantage point, where details are too close to be in clear focus.  In other words, the effect you mention was a happy accident.  That gives me something to think about, which is very helpful.

"No, it isn't," she agrees.

I feel like that unseen moment you've created was when Pam stopped selling herself short.

Thanks for a great fic! Congrats on your new baby, too :)

(p.s. We were in Mexico for Christmas, and an Alaska Airlines plane landed that was painted with Disney characters - it said, "We're going to Disney World!" on the side.  All I could think was, Now there's a plane load of disappointed kids!)

Author's Response:

Thanks!!   It did - so much so I couldn't bear to look at it too much before I posted.  OBVIOUSLY.   It's prettier now - if you'd care to reread.

OUCH.  Poor kiddies!
