Wow. You really delivered, missy. Or should I say, Jim did.

Please tell me your eye doctor does NOT do this to you

Ha! And this too: C it is. Funny and sexy as a sexilicious thing. Now, all I want to know is does Jim offer these services as a private tutor? And can you post part II like yesterday?

Author's Response: Hmmm. Jim as a sex tutor! There\'s an AU fic if ever I heard one... Anyway, thanks so much for your review. I love when I get specifics ;-)

If reviews are like chocolate cake...then this story deserves multiple slices ;-) Smut that's just about the mechanics of boinking doesn't do much for me - but smut that's about some emotional truth, like this...well, that's a whole 'nother thing. This was deliciously chocolatey and touching too. And this line is one of the sexiest Smut!Jim has ever uttered: “I want it together.” Well done, and calorie-free!

Author's Response: Thanks, as always, Colette. Your opinion means tons to me. I\'m glad it rang the bells of emotional truth (and gave you a calorie-free dessert!). I agree with you that smut about mechanics (and smut with too many technical or naughty body part words) doesn\'t do much for me either. There\'s something to be said for subtlety, right? Anyway, thanks so much for your review!

...her voice like a slow river

If you just wrote that one phrase, I'd have loved this. This captures that solitary, still of the night feeling so well, when being that in love is as awful as it is wonderful (it sends a surge of something akin to despair through him.) Like how you use his hyper-awareness of the sounds/forces of nature around him as a metaphor for his vulnerability and fear, just below the surface (the mystery of where they’re headed - perfect.) And his inability to tell her rings so true  - I'd love to think that he doesn't need to, that she already knows. Beautiful.

May this start a trend of post-DP fics! This line was hot as fresh-baked smutcake: Take off those stockings, hmm? In fact, this whole story was scrumptious...Jim for dessert? Worth every damn calorie, babe (sorry,  had to do it ;-)

Author's Response: Well, colette, I was just trying to jump start the fanfic engine with this, so if I succeeded, that's great.  Glad you enjoyed my admittedly, mild form of smutcake.  I usually struggle trying to write fic, but this one flowed pretty easily from my brain to the laptop, so I posted it quickly before I could have second thoughts.  Glad it worked!

It only took me 3 days to finish it (stupid work) but here's a little Post-Dinner Party action. Fluffy and short, just the way I like it.

So glad to see some post-DP fics! This captures their playful tone that evening (as if he'd ever really up and leave her there - I think you have it exactly right here about that.) And love him using that ridiculous song to put the moves on her. Delicious and funny and a great way to start my morning!

I'll say what I always say when writers ask if they should continue: if you think you should, for the story you want to tell. (How's that for an annoying answer?) Having said that, do I want to know more about Jim's...uh, college education? Damn right I do. God is in the details, and the one about the dryer buzzer going off, in the gf's parents' basement, is so perfectly high school (and the Maytag line is great - so Jim.) This is - as usual - delicious and believable. Yay you!

Author's Response: You are a wise, wise woman, Colette! Diplomatic and yet not afraid to share your own needs or desires ;-) Glad you liked the buzzer and the Maytag. That line just seemed very Jim to me. Thanks as always for your awesome reviews. Seriously.

Not sure this was intentional, but I loved that Pam used manganese blue as the hue of the lost period (cheap, synthetic, without real vibrance) and cobalt (the real stuff) to represent the depth of her love/joy at being with him. Very appropriate. Okay, will stop my pigment geeking now.

This line is all kinds of gorgeous and erotic and full of  palpable emotion: I press my tongue to him, thinking, stay.  And this was such a lovely resonant detail too (love how you subtly worked in the ref to CN via color, without 'explaining' it): This is no temporary sky blue that can shift and turn gray, no periwinkle blue that can fade and vanish into the night.

What a quietly magical scene. Glad to see you back ;-)

Author's Response:

Yeah, uh..yeah!  I totally meant to do that, Colette!  What a happy little accident that turned out to be!  You know, I figured someone here would really know what they were talking about and I was hoping that just picking the colors that felt right would work out (kind of like picking the horse based on the jockey's silks).  I hesitated on using the periwinkle blue because it's so obvious, but I figured that I wasn't beating anyone over the head with CN angst, so it seemed to be okay.

Man, it was an ugly fight to the finish with this, but I was determined not to scrap another half-written fic because it didn't feel right or was just plain old dumb.  Thank you for this.  Words of praise and encouragement from you mean so much.

Author's Response:

If only they all came this easy, Colette!  (how's that for a setup?)  Honestly, I'm cracking up now thinking of myself typing away this morning on the couch, bed head, mean teacher glasses, in my robe, having coffee and laughing like the giant dork that I am.  If there were cameras around, I'd be the female Creed.

But...but...what if the sky falls, Colette?  Just putting it out there. ;-)

For me, a brief moment like this that evokes something big and complex can be more powerful than a multi-chapter involved plot. You captured Pam's limbo at that point  - starting to realize she felt more than she should for a friend, yet having no idea what to do with that. I also like how you made it clear that whatever she was doing with Jim (they talked about nothing – like usual) was no more exciting than with Roy - it just felt right. It was a great day just cause he was there, even doing ordinary things like going to Duane Reade. Nice small bittersweet touches like him waiting to make sure she's safe (lots to think about there) and ending with her nighttime rituals - that's really what scared her, isn't it? Letting go of the known. Very nicely done, as usual!

Author's Response: thank you colette! i saw this as a small, quiet moment, meant to speak volumes about the hurricane in pam's mind - and i'm glad you agree.  i think her precarious situation is so interesting because of what you talk about here, that she has to figure out how to proceed with what she feels and understands.  in this moment and for many after she stays still - until casino night.  thanks for your feedback!

Summary: So I've always had this odd fascination with what a Jim/Pam argument looks like now that they're a couple. So at the end of last week's episode (Night Out) I thought it might be a good time to explore that...although I'm such a sap for them I'm unable to leave them mad at each other for too long...so here goes nuthin.'

This: Jim, saying he didn't know was a lot better than Jim not saying anything at all was perfect, cause that's how Jim would come to terms with his job-issues...in small increments with Pam's encouragement, not in some big dramatic epiphany. (I like your Halpert clan a lot more than the one we've seen on the show, btw.) Happy Pesach indeed, Pam you lucky shiksa goddess, you ;-)

Author's Response: i must say - i am kind of surprised that folks are digging this fic!  i really wrote it for NanReg, but i'm happy that i am spreading some holiday cheer.  i don't think i am going to use ben and tate any longer (even though i abhor the creation of jim's annoying brothers), since i try to stay canon if at all possible, but i will miss them.

Oh, wow Emily. This really resonated with me - love how you portrayed the complexity of her feelings without overworking it. They're so vivid via subtle details, not lengthy explanations. And such great details - her thoughts about sticking Jim with a pin, her memory of Roy and the umbrella, so many more. And that last bit was especially lovely - the city heat and rain are so tactilely rendered that I could just see/feel her running down the street (and hooray for Fort Greene!) Then the simple reality of him obliterating all the doubts/fears that sort of metasticized in his absence...and them proposing to each other and...okay, clearly it effected me, lol. This is one of those fics that I read and think, dang - wish I'd thought of that!

Author's Response:

colette - thanks so much for the feedback.  you know i love hearing from you.

i had a great time writing this, getting into pam's head, and letting feelings of confusion and love and conflict wash all over me.  us?  i think the most romantic things happen in the rain or in the heat, that's how i've always written, and it's probably repetitive but oh well :)

the proposal!  you know, i'm kind of in a fight with jim.  he practically lives with pam, he's had a ring for almost a whole year.  what the hell is his problem??? propose!  you don't need fireworks!  i get what he's going for, and i think i understand why, but i can see pam thinking he's a little silly.  and especially with 3 months on her own under her belt, i can see her wanting to do things a little differently.  hence, proposing.

"This is one of those fics that I read and think, dang - wish I'd thought of that!"

First, I'm so impressed that you even attempted poetry here (you're braver than I, lol!) And even more so that what you made is so delicate and true.

...and no matter what that beautiful boy says or
promises, the threat of losing him presses like blades
through her insides.

So evocative. Referring to him as 'that beautiful boy' is especially poignant for some reason...and apt for her bittersweet awareness of how he feels about her. I also really liked the analogy of her inability to 'draw'  the negative space around him.

And yes, that last line is lovely and better yet - just enough.

Author's Response: I definitely don\'t deserve such high praise, but your review made me ridiculously happy :D. I was definitely apprehensive about the format I posted it in - maybe it would read better as straight prose?

Much though I liked Jim being secure and mature enough not to go neanderthal on Toby's sorry ass, I really liked him being a bit jealous and prickly about it when they're alone. Lots of great, sexy, funny banter - loved Jim asking about the sluts (somehow that word always cracks me up) checking him out - how he's so oblivious to his own hot-itude. So, win-win-win (jealousy - arguing - naked Jim)...what's not to like? Yum.

Btw, I think you have one too many 'againsts' in this phrase (though it might just be my overheated synapses confusing me ;-): with his cock against hard against her.

Author's Response: prickly is EXACTLY the right way to say it! colette ftw! i think it's one of the conversations that happens late at night between two people, with no one else around, and that's when one lets it all out - even if it's ugly.  i'm glad you liked the banter!  jim being oblivious to his "hot-itude" is really based upon jkras in two occasions: (1) during an on-set interview with that awful kristin dos santos, when jenna teased him about being shirtless in "license to wed." he was so cute and modest and embarrassed!  (2) some early interview w/jenna.  she says something like, he has no idea how cute he is!  look at him!  and he responded with loads of embarrassment. gotta love it.

I love how subtle but laden the language is here. So many beautifully phrased, simple details that imply so much about what they're feeling, like: the positioning is awkward and she has to lean over a bit to even reach his hand or but suddenly her face is hovering above him or finally - and absolutely gorgeously:  the words coming out in a cloud. And the final two words kind of say everything. Hopeful, but not tied up in a neat little package.

I like how you wove the motif of the charms through this. Also, how vivid you made the awkward tension in that elevator ride and then Jim's painful ambivalence in the scene with Karen on the floor - this is so well put: The only thing Karen’s still wearing is her necklace. She’d daintily removed her watch, even; it was the only thing she’d done gently this entire time. The whale tail dangled in front of his face, almost mocking him.Ouch. Very apt - especially that last line. Nicely done.

This has a really lovely natural feel to it. I also like the 2nd person voice - always makes a story feel so immediate, but it's hard to do well, and I think you pull it off with finesse here. Love him thinking he's a 'polite idiot,' his deliciously awkward impromptu proposal, and of course racing back with the ring. Also like the bit about him looking up artists on Wiki - very sweet and believable Jim-ish detail.

Finally got a chance to read this - and it was just what the doc ordered after a rotten morning at work. Totally delightful - funny and tender without being schmoopy and very true to character. All the little details, from Pam's new clothes, to the CD's, to Jim saying the prayers, to her mom calling that first morning...and about twenty more. And especially like how straight forward your writing is here - really lets the wit and heart come through in a very natural way.  Looking forward to month 3.

Author's Response: Fact: In an early version of this story, the seductive pink bathtub duck was named Colette. I am not kidding. That being said, can I have your autograph? :) Your compliments mean a lot. Thank you. When you posted \"One Down, Ten to Go\" shortly after I put the first part of this up, my heart stopped. I was feeling very tail between my legs for a moment there...

Summary:

He laughs inwardly at how familiar this feels. This feeling of racing back to her and running to her to show her that he’s here, and to ask her something that will forever change the landscape of their relationship.

Oh my, kells...I love how you've taken this single moment and made it so full and powerful. Jim's urgency to do it NOW (forever change the landscape of their relationship - perfect.) Also, ignoring people yelling when he double parks is such a great detail.  And like how quiet, but utterly resolved the ending is. Hooray for understatement and hooray for this lovely piece!

Author's Response:

Colette I love how you notice the little details...and being a New Yorker yourself I bet you're no stranger to the frustration that is the double parker, lol.  It's been a while since I've lived in Manhattan, but some things stick with you.

I really was going for urgency here.  Like, Jim decided it HAD to be now and he couldn't wait until he did it.  Sort of like The Job.  He made up his mind, and that was it.  I was nervous that I didn't really convey that since it was a pretty short little number, so I'm glad to read that it came across that way for you.  Thanks for the wonderful review!!

'Darling I love you, but give me Park Avenue...' Bonus points if you work in Mr. Haney or Arnold Ziffle next time;-)

Really enjoyed this - liked Pam struggling with the 'tax deductible' issues of her adventure, Jim's surprise/anger/hurt at her attitude, their fight - all very real and true to character. Throw in a nekkid slithering, striding Jim and you're golden, lol. Thanks for this.

Author's Response: Sometimes the most random things pop into my head and that\'s where Green Acres came from. Nice to know people still remember it. I\'m glad this came off as real; I couldn\'t help wondering about these details and how it might affect them. And nekkid Jim is always fun, isn\'t it. :D I\'m glad you liked it! Thanks for reading.
