I was around this site many years ago, during seasons 4 and 5, and then went on an unexpected hiatus for several years. I'm back and better than ever! Finished up one WIP ("Sociology 101") and might finish another if inspiration strikes. For now, working on new material and enjoying being back!

You: “Next chapter will be a bit more angsty!”

Me, having missed this story when it was first being updated because I am a trash person who abandoned MTT for no good reason at all: “oh, okay, if what has been written already isn’t getting to the higher end of the angst meter then am I fully prepared for what’s next?”

You: *writes this chapter*

God, DC. This whole thing, the exploration of them exploring how they feel, before he tells her and after he leaves and while she’s breaking him? It is so genius and perfect. I love the symmetry in these chapters, how alike they are in their feelings without knowing it. I LOVED the yogurt story and had to go back and reread about her moving her computer because she WANTED TO SEE WHAT CHANGE WAS LIKE. Oh, my god. Murder me.

And I loved that at the beginning she was still processing things with Roy. Even when it’s not right, it’s so so hard to end a relationship like that, and it takes time and effort to unpack how you feel and sort those feelings away. You addressed it so beautifully.

I love this. I hate that I was gone when it was first published and I hate that my first act upon logging back in wasn’t to go and read all of your work (and Coley, and AG, and JB, and all of my other favorites, if you guys could just not be so good and prolific and also if you could pay me money to read all your fic so I didn’t have to waste time with a job, that’d be great ty) but I am so glad I had so much of this one to read today. Excellent work, but no surprise there. Cannot wait to see how you end it.

Coming back after a reread to make sure I leave you a review, because you deserve it! The whole arc of this story is so fun and I really love how you made them have some days that weren’t as great, because I think that’s a very realistic portrayal of a relationship that’s going without intimacy for a while. You’re so good, Coley! The sexy stuff was HOT and the candy debate was hilarious and in character for everyone, and I loved Pam’s retelling of the Dundies night. And you were definitely right, they’re one of the greats.

Summary: “Karen, I don’t even have his phone number. It’s been four years since we last saw each other. When we broke up.” Pam emphasizes this last part as if Karen needs the reminder of her best friend’s personal history. “It’s not like… Look, I’m not going to fall in love with him again.”

I’ve been sitting here at the kitchen table with a bowl of half eaten and now cold oatmeal processing how I feel after having not only reread the entirety of what you’ve previously posted of this story, but now something new. And I just-you know, right? That your writing is akin to spellcasting in that it puts the reader in a trace so that all they can do is keep reading, keep feeling the ache of “they love each other, they want this so bad, but they’re both so scared and hurt” and keep feeling the joy of “they’re finding each other again! They’re being honest!” And keep feeling the joy and love and heart that they all (and I mean everybody in this story, not just the main characters) have, because YOU have put them there. God. Incredible. You have to know that, and if you don’t, I’ll tell you forever.

This update was such a perfect turning point. All the stuff from Jo, the way they’re tiptoeing around opening up more about what they want and who they are to each other, the JOB omg. I can’t wait to see what else you do in this universe, how you have greased the cogs of the story and now are about to set them turning. No pressure or rush but like, I need the next chapter yesterday.

Okay so I missed this when it first was being published because I had dropped off the face of the earth, and oh my god. I am so so glad the shoutbox was going nonstop about HMOH because man. This is SO GOOD so far and like, everything I didn’t know I needed? But I had to stop in my read to leave a review for this specific moment because it is genius and witty and I love it so much.

“More like competent underachievers who need someone to take a chance on them so they don’t have to—” she shrugs for effect, as though she is trying to think up a terrible fate, “— sell paper for their first five years out of college.”

Amazing.

Reviewer: BigTuna Signed 1
Date: May 28, 2020 Title: Chapter 11: Nothing is as it has been and I miss your face like hell

Okay so obviously I binged this and there are just so many things that honestly make this one of the best fics I’ve read and takes me back to that heart wrenching feeling of “oh my god they hurt each other so much” to “oh my godddd they love each other so much!” that is present in the best of fics and is usually accompanied by a slow burn and just. Ugh.

So because I am not anywhere near as eloquent as you I cannot begin to put my thoughts into orderly fashion so instead I present a list about why this is so amazing.

-the fleshing out of these characters that get a throwaway mention in a way that feels real and true and makes sense
-the way both Jim and Pam changed (for the better or worse) and made decisions that reflected their mental state, again, in a way that feels very real and true and not forced. Bad boy womanizer hotshot Jim (or whatever we want to call him) makes sense and isn’t just bad boy for no reason. His decisions make sense for the characterization you’ve presented, and the characterization feels true to the source material and really shows how someone’s situation and surroundings can drastically change their behavior. For Pam, too.
-Pam’s friendship with Karen! I love it so much. It really feels natural and Karen is made into a character that fits into what we know of her but not in a way that makes her out to be too much of a bitchy hard ass. Does that make sense?
-just your turn of phrase and the language you use is just so lovely.
-the flashbacks are an excellent storytelling device and I love how as the story progressed we saw more and more of what informed them and shaped them into the people they are present day
-also I just really love that you closed the Scranton branch and sent them all on their way as individuals
-the dynamic between Jim and Bill was so well written and believable and it made sense, as opposed to “no you can’t marry my daughter for reasons” it was “nah that ain’t it fam, for reasons that are misinformed but good to me as her father”
-the way you wrote their arguments
-Jo!!!
-the way his and Hannah’s marriage progressed and dissolved
-the way they got to know each other again
-DANNY’S APPEARANCE
-her putting on that CN dress oh my god my heart
-the steamy stuff but you already knew you were good at that

This is SO LONG and there’s STILL MORE but honestly I just don’t know if I can give enough accolades? This fic makes me feel old school feels and I love it and hate you for doing this to me but also love you for blessing me with it. Ugh. So good. Never stop.

Honestly I’d read an entire Dwangela fic if you wrote it, this was written so well. I liked how it was dialogue in the context of our favorite couple. It’s a new and interesting way to frame things! So not to put more on your plate but if you want to write an entire fic like this for us I’d be way happy. 😉

And I don’t even care that it’s a Christmas story and I’m not reading it at Christmas time, so keep those updates coming when you can! (After you open your island so I can come sell pears, ofc)

A Will They or Won't They AU with Pam and Jim as next door neighbors.

“Pam, come on. Don’t do that.” The sound of his bare feet on the wooden floor following behind kept me in motion through the dining room, looking under chairs for my sandals. I summoned everything I had in me not to look at him in his currently half-dressed state.

“Don’t do what? Jim, I’m fine. Really.”

I’m just in love with you and you only want to be friendly neighbors. And, also, since I’m being honest with myself, my body is not loving the unsated high of being as aroused as I just felt with your hands on me like that.

Okay I’m catching up on all that I’ve missed in my absence and I usually just binge and then write all my thoughts at the end but I just had to stop here and tell you how much I am LOVING this. You write it so so so well. The nuggets of history peppered throughout give the story so much life and you capture the best and most romantic parts of this time period so well. Of course with the opening chapter and it being wartime I know it won’t all be sunshine and roses, but I can’t wait to keep reading! Excellent work, warrior!

Author's Response: Thanks BT. I was kinda hoping you'd find your way to this one eventually. I remember having a lot of fun writing that chapter. Not just with writing it, but also doing the research to find out what movies and music was around back then. I'm glad you're enjoying it so far. Looking forward to hearing what you have to say about the rest.

Pausing again in my read of this to say how much I love the way you work events from the show into this story. Ryan asking Pam out, the 27 seconds. It’s all so perfect. I’m really loving this!

Author's Response: Thanks again BT. It's been a lot of as well as challenging to work in show moments. Sometimes it can work like how the show had it, other times it's fun to change it up. Glad you're still enjoying the story.

Finally caught up and I just love this so much! I am so so impressed with the level of detail and amount of research you’ve put into this! It is no easy task to be historically accurate and you make it seem so seamless and effortless. Great great job.

Something else I love is how you’re putting in all these extra elements that we kind of see in the show, but fleshing them out a bit. I like how we see what’s going on with Pam’s parents and we meet more of Jim’s friends/family in a way that makes sense. Your characterizations are spot on, too. I just truly love everything about this. I know it is probably a beast to tackle when you sit down to update it, but I am waiting on pins and needles for the next chapter!

Author's Response: Thanks BT. I've very glad all the hours pouring over Wikipedia, Youtube, and the book I bought filled with first hand accounts from 8th Air Force flight crews proved worth it to you. Honestly it's a bit distracting at times because I'll pull something up for a quick fact check and windup down some weird internet rabbit hole.

Thanks for the notes about characterization. I'm trying to keep everyone mostly in character despite the different time setting. Some details will change, but hopefully the core of everyone will remain constant. Very glad to have you here.

This chapter was soooo good. It was tense and scary and real but had the right amount of romance abs longing. You write each character so well and I truly love how you’ve incorporated some throw away characters into this story and given them life. You’re just so good! I can’t wait to read more, but don’t beat yourself up if it takes a while to update! You have an important job and a family and it’s crazy times and nobody knows how to deal and sometimes writing takes a back seat. Your faithful readers aren’t going anywhere!

Author's Response: Awww, BT thank you. For your support of this story as well as for the personal touches. It's very appreciated. I'm glad you enjoyed this chapter so much. It's been a long time to get to this point so I'm glad everything's lived up to any expectations.

Just read these most recent three chapters and there’s no way I’m going to remember everything I loved because there was SO MUCH! But I will try!
-you captured and kept my attention during the ball game, which is not easily accomplished when describing sports!
-the way everyone worked together to get Angela to fall asleep made me laugh out loud
-the letter! Their code!
-the way you write the dog fights is SO GOOD! I can picture it all so clearly in my head, like a documentary or movie
-everyone’s voice is spot on
-yeah, TAKE THAT RYAN number one how dare you
-Tim! Gareth! Omg! So perfect!

Just excellent writing all around. This story is absolutely one of my favorites and I’ll read it over and over. Great job (but let’s be real you knew that already!)

Author's Response: BT thank you for this review. I first read it during a VERY long night at work, so it helped decrease some of the stress of the night. I'm so very glad you've been enjoying everything.

The baseball's been fun to write for me too. Sounds like watching tons of sports movies has paid off.

The team causing Angela to fall asleep was a favorite part too. There's no way she would let them out to the bar so they needed to get creative. Likewise with the code in the letters. Just because Jim and Pam aren't face to face doesn't mean I'm going to let them stop bantering to each other.

I'm really glad the dog fights have come across well. I don't know how many times I've read the Star Wars X-Wing books. Lots of dogfights in there which is what I'm using as inspiration for writing out dog fights. Also like sports movies, I've watched a ton of WWII and fighter pilot movies and documentaries. So I'm really glad it's coming across well.

Glad the characters are still staying true as well. Considering the wide cast to work with, at times it can get tricky.

Yeah, Ryan may get a few jabs in, but like in canon, Jim always comes out on top.

They're in the UK, how could I not include the UK Office cast? It was just to good an opportunity to let slip by.

Thank you so very much of the continued support for this story. It really does make me glad to hear you're enjoying it so much. I hope I continue to keep the standards up.

Damn, I did not expect this chapter to end that way! I am anxious to see what happens with Helene and the rest of the family. Hopefully she comes to her senses. Another great chapter, warrior!

Author's Response: Thanks BT. I hesitated to end the chapter like this. But it's in canon that Pam's parents split up, so that's part of it. Honestly I'm not sure how it's going to pan out myself. Thanks as always for the review.

I’m like. So proud of them! The character growth that we’ve seen throughout this story is incredible. And it stays in line with what we know from the show and just the fundamentals of how they’re written canonically. So it’s really like these two friends that I know and love that do this hard thing and are doing a great job!

Loved the IMs. LOVED the prank. Loved the history with Ryan and the darts and just how enamored Jim is, you wrote that SO well, but honestly that’s literally every word that you type so I’m not surprised.
