Super late to this party...

I’ve loved The Office for a few years now & have dabbled in fic for other fandoms. Deep in another rewatch, I thought there’s got to be some amazing fic out there for arguably one of the greatest shows of all time & here I am - potentially attempting to devour the MTT archive in its entirety?

If I manage to stop reading for long enough, I may attempt to add a few ideas of my own. Time will tell.

Edit May 19: Understandably, I've fallen head over heels with this archive and all that it offers. I've started a Fic Rec Friday thread on Twitter, where I enthuse about the many stories that have brought me joy. So, I'm just putting it out there if you'd like to stop by and have a look. I'm also super open if you have any suggestions that you think should be added/are must reads...

This story is fun! I was a little worried the one day of difference would spell angst, but I’m glad to find this delightful banter instead!

Author's Response: Thanks! I can't promise no angst, but I am a mostly angst-avoidant fic writer so...expect my usual on that.

Oh Pam. The line about fairytales & then Grimm's - such an apt comparison to Pam’s relationship with Roy. This chapter was far too real. The part where Izzy said she was too good for him & she internally brushed her off is so, so Pam. Your Pam is so spot on.

Author's Response: Thank you...I was really trying to get into that era of Pam's head, so it's great to her it actually worked.

Boy oh boy, I feel like Jim learning of Roy’s existence is going to come with even more disappointment than canon. I love that he’s this smitten already. It’s sweet. I can’t wait to see what happens when they actually meet!

Author's Response: Yeah...it's gonna be a whole thing. I promise a happy ending though ;)

Well, this was just adorable. I love a flustered Pam. Jim is delightfully Jim. It’s nice to see his dynamic with Dwight remain very much the same despite the delay in starting.

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm enjoying writing the initial meeting as flustered; I hope you like flustered Jim as much as flustered Pam, because there will be heavy doses of both.

That line about Michael actually saying wink, wink, etc was delightful & so, so Michael.
Ah Kelly, if anyone can make an entrance...
Not that any version of Roy is particularly great, but somehow you manage to write the least likable versions of Roy in existence - he’s the absolute worst. He doesn’t even have to be in the chapter for it be obvious what a tool he is... Ugh.
I’m hoping things look up for this version of Pam and Jim sooner than canon...

Author's Response:

Thank you! I'm always convinced that I'll mess Michael up so I only put in little bits of him, so I'm delighted to hear this one seemed in character!

And yes...I kind of hate Roy, as is probably obvious, but still, "least likable versions in existence" is a high compliment. I'm gonna keep that one close to my heart.

I’m with Kelly, she should date him! The touching, the delightful awkwardness. How can two people have so much damn chemistry?! It’s jumping off the page...

Author's Response: Thank you! I really appreciate hearing this.

That assessment of Michael is so, so spot on. Jim is onto it. I can picture him showing the information video just like that. Also, the playing around on the forklift. It feels lifted from an episode in the best way possible.
I’m going to be honest, this chapter has far too much Roy and not enough not-Roy. I’m looking forward to chapters with less Roy. Seriously though, I can picture an initial meeting between Jim and Roy going down just like this...

Author's Response: Thank you! Michael is a challenge for me to write, so I'm beyond happy this worked for you. I do agree about the Roy-ratio, but hey, in order to get rid of him I have to include him first. I promise this will go where everyone expects and wants, even if it takes a little time...and a little more Roy than we might prefer.

I feel like this industrial spies thing is essentially Pam and Jim’s first prank together & I love that Pam set it up, & somehow Dwight’s name is involved. It’s so, so good.

Author's Response: That was my plan, so I'm glad this is how it's coming across to you! Thank you!

I feel like Jim is going to grow to dislike Roy far, far more as he continues to delve into what makes Pam tick...

Author's Response: I think it'll be pretty quick, don't you? Thanks for the review!

Reviewer: JennaBennett Signed

It was kind of unexpected that their “prank” would turn into a legitimate-ish sale. Jim’s really finding his way in sales by the seems of it - although, it’s all about who you know I suppose... It’s nice to see Darryl and Jim hitting it off too. Pam is delightfully awkward.
All the Roy stuff at the beginning... That relationship is so doomed. Even without Jim, it’s just not going to last...

Author's Response: This is the first step in the dominos of change, that Jim starts with an actual real sale, and a slightly different dynamic with Pam as a result. Thanks for the feedback!

That description of Pam and her “calmness”/general apathy was wow. It feels so, so much like her character early on. A really wonderful way to explain her mindset. I like that Jim mixes it up a little for her - even if Pam finds it somewhat off putting.
Jim winning over everyone in the office was just generally adorable. The introduction of the air five was great inclusion/link to canon.

Author's Response: Thank you! I really appreciate the careful way you're reading the emotional beats of the story.

I’m so excited for this! I can’t wait to see what changed based on that one day of difference. That line suggesting the new person was relatively sane for having met Michael and then not coming in to take the job was great. I also loved that whole passage about Roy leaving her at the office. Pam’s slightly passive aggressive internal thoughts around that are just too real.

Congrats on the new job!

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm still debating what specific changes we'll see, but I promise they will be fundamentally long-lasting!

This was a whole lot of fun! I have to giggle, because I have a friend & her husband who every year on their anniversary try on their wedding clothes to see if they still fit & take a photo. I digress... I loved that them were still so them, best friends & a little bit silly. That last line was a truly fantastic way to cap off a great story.

Author's Response: Thank you! I had fun with this, especially because my wife and I used to go to Niagara and play minigolf, so this was like reliving a bit of my own past. Thanks for reading!

Summary:

I miss you, come back to me. I wish you'd come back to me. But nobody heard. And the world turned and the world turned and the world turned.

This was an emotional roller coaster. The imagery of Pam at the lake was achingly beautiful. Jim making things right was just perfect. Seems Niagara-y enough for me!

Oh this was just lovely. I thoroughly enjoyed the humor peppered throughout, i.e. men/man. All of Pam’s thought processes make a lot of sense. It’s kind of nice to see Pam reflect on a “truer” version of Roy in this chapter too. Interesting to see the comparisons to Jim being made.

Author's Response: Thank you! I try to get the humor right, but of course, no one could ever write these characters as well as the show's writers. I'm glad Pam seems to make sense for you here. I do worry that she is all over the place, but then, in this situation, I imagine it would be very confusing, so I hope that is coming across. Thanks again for reading and reviewing.  More on the way.

This was a delightfully fitting ending! Nice to see Jim and Angela reach an understanding. Also great to see things wrapped up with a declaration of love. This whole fic was lovely, thanks for sharing!

Author's Response: I'm so flattered you enjoyed this ending. Thanks so much for your continued encouragement of my writing.

If only it had been this easy in canon... And by easy, I mean with Roy so conveniently out of the picture this early on. Their conversation here is so painfully real considering how things really are in the show. And to have them so aware of it in a universe where they’re free of Roy? Just beautiful, in a totally bittersweet kind of way. Very much looking forward to seeing how you wrap this up.

Author's Response: I agree at how frustrating the canon Pam/Jim stuff could be. I think I've mentioned before, that fanfiction is my way of rectifying that in my own small way. So glad you enjoyed this. Thanks for reviewing.  I just posted the epilogue, and hope you check it out.

This was super sweet. I loved everything they said was just a little bit loaded and accidentally suggestive. It’s nice to see hints of Pam making comparisons between Roy and Jim, like Roy not being interested in museums & having kids. It’s also nice to see this done in way that doesn’t drip with bitterness towards Roy (as is often the way). Having him play into things as her deceased husband definitely puts a spin on how his character is presented. It continues to be an interesting twist that shapes everything through a slightly different lens.
Looking forward to getting Pam’s thoughts about taking that next step.

Author's Response: I really don't like writing angst, so I look to the characters' general good natures, assuming they are all decent and forgiving. I hope that isn't too Pollyannaish, but I can't seem to pull out of that mode, lol. Thanks for reviewing. More very soon!

Vincent may just be my favorite original character to ever exist... Cats are always a good judge of character.
It was nice to see Pam and Angela sort things out. I can definitely see Angela’s motivation being losing her friend (as opposed to her moral objection to Pam moving on too fast).
Of course Jim was a sweetheart about Pam breaking down during their intimate encounter. It’s lovely to see the better side of Jim shine through here - there’s definitely potential for a guy to take it to heart.
Great update, as always.

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm definitely a cat person myself, so it was fun adding Vincent Van Gogh the cat in the mix. As for Angela, she strikes me as so lonely, so afraid and isolated. I tried to humanize her a bit, so I'm glad you appreciated what I did here. And Jim...well I think he is about perfect (yes, he makes mistakes), but he is my ideal man, so I tend to always give him the benefit of the doubt. I hope you continue to enjoy this fic.

This was a super sweet first date. It’s nice to see the balance of Pam creating new memories, yet still acknowledging her history (without it being too uncomfortable). That said, running into the old friend of Roy’s was never going to be fun. I hope that Pam isn’t too regretful of jumping into things with Jim as a bit of reflex to that slightly awkward interaction. I shudder to think how Angela will respond once she realizes that Pam and Jim have kicked things up a notch...

Author's Response: Sorry I have been late in responding to this review. Thanks so much!

I love Angela in this. Yes, she’s a bit much & way too invested in Pam’s love life, but it’s great. I can definitely see her filling the role of overprotective (albeit slightly overbearing) friend. It was great to see an update!

Author's Response: Thank you! I have a love/hate relationship with Angela. I think Pam does too. Next chapter, I'll clue you in on what happened between them in the bathroom, lol. Hope to see you back here for that.

I like this premise - it’s a little different & definitely sets up their early days in another tone. That said, there was still plenty of early Pam and Jim banter which was lovely. Although, my favorite inclusion is without a doubt Vincent & Pam’s friendship with Angela. Looking forward to seeing where you go next! Welcome to MTT!

Author's Response: Thanks so much! I hope you continue to enjoy this.

This was all kinds of sweet. I love an instantly smitten Jim and that’s definitely who we have here. I’m surprised he has noticed the wedding band with all the quality time, but it’ll be all the more bittersweet (at least momentarily) when he does. I love that pranking Dwight is a lovely icebreaker in their budding friendship (or more). Your Dwight is exactly who I expect early/pre-series Dwight to be. It’s fun to see his dynamic with Jim developing. Looking forward to more!

Author's Response: Thank you! And one of my favorite parts about seasons 1 and 2 is how obvious it is (to the viewers) how in love Jim is. I hope you continue to like what I do. More very soon!

This was a fun update. I love this version of nana Scott. Dare I say, she’s a lot nicer than the canon version... Nice to see Pam & Jim leaning into their attraction a little more. The way you write the tension between them is palpable. It’s so, so great.

Author's Response: Thanks so much for the great review! I'm glad the tension is coming across as I intended. I'm working very hard :) More on the way...

I loved the kind person parallel! It was also very sweet to see Pam’s softness towards Dwight - their friendship is always one of my favorite things. I’m glad the ring has finally been seen & you didn’t draw out the angst too much. A really lovely update. Looking forward to more.

Author's Response: Thank you! I'm really not big on angst, usually, and I ALWAYS write happy endings. I love Pam and Dwight's relationship too. I'm so happy you enjoyed this chapter. And I just posted chapter 4. I hope you get the chance to check it out.
