Super late to this party...

I’ve loved The Office for a few years now & have dabbled in fic for other fandoms. Deep in another rewatch, I thought there’s got to be some amazing fic out there for arguably one of the greatest shows of all time & here I am - potentially attempting to devour the MTT archive in its entirety?

If I manage to stop reading for long enough, I may attempt to add a few ideas of my own. Time will tell.

Edit May 19: Understandably, I've fallen head over heels with this archive and all that it offers. I've started a Fic Rec Friday thread on Twitter, where I enthuse about the many stories that have brought me joy. So, I'm just putting it out there if you'd like to stop by and have a look. I'm also super open if you have any suggestions that you think should be added/are must reads...

I don’t even have words. I love this so much. The whole concept that Jim would face one his biggest fears head on because it paled to watching Pam get married. This is quite possibly the best twist on his Australia trip to ever exist.

Also, P.S. are Australian taxis known for being sketchy? Is that a thing? Like where do we sit on a scale to me almost getting murdered in a Russian “cab”?

Oh I love this beginning! It’s so very perfect for a Christmas story, a little bit of whimsy, but also a perfect blend of reality.

Spending Christmas with your partner’s family - even when you know them beforehand is always daunting!
“Pam was taken aback by the hurricane of hugs and greetings, and then — by the ebb-tide of complete disinterest.” Oof. This is so very real.

The list of reasons that Pam gives for not creating the decorations breaks my heart. It’s fitting of her relationship with Roy. It makes all the sense in the world that those are the reasons that stop her.

“little anchors keeping the most precious memories” This is beautiful.

“that was just a thin layer of shiny glass.
Inside, she was hollow.” Damn Dernhelm, this is such a great analogy.

This whole thing is so very, very lovely! I love the whole premise of it so very much. Pam and homemade ornaments is something I didn’t know I needed, but now I can’t imagine Christmas without out it.

Author's Response: Oh, Jenna, your review made me smile, thank you so much for your kind words! And I'm glad you like the idea and the story :)

Oh stop. That mulled wine story/crockpot gift is adorable.

“Like a ham?” I —

“Rope daddy” Oh My God BT. I knew what to expect, but like I still wasn’t expecting it directly to spill from Pam’s lips. And I certainly wasn’t expecting it to be in such a sweet and funny moment!

“Better throw that wire away so you don’t get any funny ideas.” The foreshadowing. The way you’re a literal genius, BT.

“Don’t you threaten me with a good time.” Perfect line is so very perfect.

Does the sequel drop on New Year’s? Please?

BT, this was so damn great. Your blend of humor, steam and fun was right in that sweet spot as always. You are a gift to this group & this story is a spectacular bonus.

Summary: Pam has to grapple with the price of fame and the worst moments of her marriage just to finish her Christmas shopping.

The whole teapot exchange? Please. It’s too good. It brought an actual smile to my face.
I love this premise & context, because let’s face it, I am that girl who would be buying a mass produced teapot from Target if at all resembled *the* teapot, you know.

“The problem is, the world’s gotten very familiar with what she looks like trying not to react to things.” Oh. This makes so much sense.

Wow. You built this so well. All of Pam’s interactions and encounters at the mall made her stress about her incidental fame so very palpable. You really shaped it all for Jim’s rather grand gesture to be all the more meaningful. The edge of humor was just perfectly balanced throughout too.
This was truly lovely.

Author's Response: Yeah, I know what you mean. This was a really fun but also very odd fic to write. I felt like I was taking some hard shots at myself here. (I've mentioned this elsewhere, but I'd hate to see this Pam's reaction to MTT.) Thank you so much! This was a challenge to make seem not contrived and not like Pam is just rattling off a think piece, and I'm really glad you feel like it all came together naturally. I'm pumped you liked this one! Thanks for taking the time to read and review.

Summary:

Pam needs very little time to know how she feels about Jim and what she needs to do to fix the mistake she just made. But things never go as planned for these two, do they?

This is my first ever writing. Feedback is greatly appreciated!

Welcome to MTT! This is a really lovely start! I love this emotional journey - that Pam feels she is grieving for the impact this could have on her relationship with Roy only to come to the realization that it’s actually about Jim.
This line in particular I thought was great: “ And, there it is- dawning understanding of what she's previously only allowed herself to know in fragmented portions- she loves him”

There’s something about her simultaneously writing a letter to Jim & a to do list that I kind of adore. And to photocopy the letter so that she can agonize over it later is so very perfect. Boy, how I wish I’d done that with some things I’ve sent in my life!

Author's Response: Oh my goodness! Thank you! I feel so encouraged by your review. I’m glad to be here!

Sometimes it takes me a day or two before I’m really ready to read something that you’ve written because I know even before I open it that it’s going to haunt my soul in all the best ways. I know that I’m going to need a moment to properly process it & let the beauty of it sink in & that I can’t just do that on the fly. This is one of those moments...

“all of them bypassing his higher brain and settling themselves in his soul” This. For the love of all things holy, this is already killing me dead.

Oh. He’s not going to shower because of the fingerprints SHE left ALL over him. Are you kidding me? Look. I’m just going to copy the whole thing into here because it’s all already so damn good.

“it passed for a moderately priced knock-off” How is this Jim’s whole I have no future here, but it the most spectacular prose?!

Ugh. You are making me long for travel. I want to be in Europe, or at the very least planning my next trip to Europe...

“I can definitely imagine.” Oh yeah, that’s right in the feels.

A Parisian terrace. The perfection.

“the city around them sighed in relief at another love story reaching its natural end.” Okay, but this is a little bit a love letter to Paris & I am 100% on board.

“It was the first time since the Gala that he hadn’t kissed her goodbye.” This sentence hits hard.

The paragraph where Jim notes the subtle differences in Karen is so, so good. It’s so true too, how attractive a person is is all so relative to how fondly you feel about them. I adore that Pam is the standard for Jim now.

Oh good. A “hey” “hi” I can be totally chill about that. I’m not losing all my shit over how good it is and that it leads into a declaration of love at all. I’m fine. So fine.

Bored. Girl. What a way to kick us off. You really do come back stronger than a 90s trend.

Author's Response:

Oh, Jenna.

Your first paragraph is going to be printed and framed, as we like to say. ;) So beautiful. I can't begin to tell you what your encouragement and support means to me. Thank you so much!

“zero best friends” fuck me up right out of the gate why don’t you, BT.

“a double serving” kind of respect that she’s not just straight out drinking from the bottle - way to ease into the self-destructive behavior.

...and there we go... The progression is just perfect. I hate that she goes to pick up Roy & I hate that I understand exactly why she does it.

“she squeezed her hands over her ears and screwed her eyes shut and made herself remember” Oh. Your mind, BT. This is absolutely perfect and of course this is where she’d be at. I love this image, if it hurts then it’s real.

Why is it bottle fifteen that’s destroying me the most?

“the feeling of coming back to something you knew really well, even if it didn’t feel like coming home” Just capture Roy & Pam’s S3 reunion perfectly in one sentence why don’t you...

Pam buying the ice bucket is just such a brilliant metaphor with how she’s finally getting it all together with the boldness & courage & coal walk. It’s very Fancy New Beesly & I am living.

I swear to god that ending has me halfway to my fridge to crack open the bottle of champagne I’ve been saving for a special occasion so I can toast to your genius. I’m not kidding.

The way you wove the lyrics through the whole thing. Are you Taylor?! Please confirm.

This is so, so great!

H O L Y G O D A G
I don’t think any other story has ever had my heart in my throat so completely. This was incredibly well written & totally gutting.
Somehow in the midst of it, there were still hints of humor & such perfect characterization - I lost my mind at: “even if there was way too much tape” because it was a completely brilliant line.

You captured the reality of the situation so unnervingly well. I don’t think I’ve ever hated Roy so deeply as this section: “And besides. He’s mentioned tolerating a few of her quirks, too.”
This version of him is truly the worst.
This version of Jim though? He is everything that is good & pure in this world & I love him so damn much.

Everything about this was just SO well done. Do you think that making me cry is cool?

I find the common theme with most fluff is that it lacks depth & girl your writing always plunges the very depths of my soul. To simply call it fluff just doesn’t seem to do it justice. I’m not sure what the most fitting term would be, but as far as I’m concerned, you are in a genre all of your own (& it’s the best one that there is).

“and struggled to mentally place him back in the neatly contained partition of her mind where she kept him”
I love a Pam that quietly admits to knowing that there was more going on with Jim than she wanted to openly acknowledge.

“the pull of his gravity drew her in against her will”
So. Much. Chemistry. The same chemistry we see on the screen also leaps off the page when you write the words.

“and times when the pains of stretching and growing had become too much”
This is what I genuinely love about Season 9 & this line. Long term relationships take work. You always paint that is such an achingly beautiful way.

“The planet continued on its path around the sun and time pressed forward with heartless disinterest in their fragile breaths between the markers”
This. Honestly this. How is everything you write this profound? And when are you dropping some sort of philosophical poetry book because I would 1000% be here for it.

Author's Response:

Listen. I know I've told you this numerous times but I really, really love your reviews. And *especially* right now, I want to read them again and again so thank you. They truly remind me that someone out there likes what I put out into the universe and that the whole damn thing is worth it.

Thank you as always, JB! <3

We’re one scene in & yes, this is the emotional rollercoaster I signed up for.
From the humor of brilliant one liners like this: “I am...going to pretend to ignore that response,"
To the bittersweet musings on their days, well day really, being marked in Scranton.
And the steady perfection of a moment in a park & then this: “The birds had stopped singing.”
Amazing.

“for safety and something else” oh my god this line just resonates. I love that this is the beginning, but is essentially the thread tying them altogether on the Farm also.

I adore these flashbacks. It’s Pam & Jim before everything they overcome has strengthened them in this whole new way. It’s such great writing to show them as still themselves, true to the show, but also true to the characters that they become in this world.

I am so thrilled to have another story from this universe brightening our lives once again!

Author's Response: I'm SO gald all of these lines landed well. I really wanted to show the contrast of Before and After and how everything can change so quickly and I hope that was shown in this first chapter. :) Thanks Lady!

Summary: Convinced they'll be different than any other friends who have tried and failed, Jim and Pam upgrade their friendship to add a few benefits. No really, it'll be fine.

“Tab D fits into Slot C.” Perfect line is perfect.
“If either of them had been expecting fireworks, there weren’t any” Speak for themselves. Some of us… It’s so much better this way though. Oh yeah, it’s definitely better this way, because now we get this second kiss.
