This was worth the wait.
I'm so glad there is cover art to help illustrate just how completely GABE this mug is - what happened to him as a child to make his the way he is?

So, my very first thought was how old is Cece in this episode- but it all became very clear by the end.

I like how Pam gives Erin the advice do the mature thing and that Jim sees an opportunity to do a prank thing - but with good reason.

With the super prank team to Erin's rescue it was bound to work - or was it. I was afraid the mug was going to be indestructible - glad that is actually wasn't but then when the replacement mug showed up I was thinking maybe it would've have been better had it been (serial killers versus teeth - maybe Jim was right) (this however is coming from a mom who has a jewelry box full of her children's teeth that are situated not far from the earrings I put on every day).

The kicker was Pam's prank on Jim -which he completely deserved - blaming a baby instead of having an adult conversation.

And as usually your network notes were as sharp as ever (lame pun but intended nonetheless)

Well done my friend.

Author's Response: Yeah, it's *very* telling how few Gabe fics there are and how many of them turn him into a criminal, but it truly is a perfect Gabe mug. The guy who constantly exposes his girlfriend to plotless horror movies in 100% going in for this.

Yeah... this was inspired a lot by the ultimate Gabe-Erin breakup, in which Pam gives Erin adult advice that backfires and Jim somewhat rudely opts out of the conversation... he's got reason to prank, but there's also more affection for Erin from Pam, I think.

I mean, this prank was well designed, they covered their tracks, but it *is* always a risk that it's a genuine cursed object. I for the record am with Jim 100%, but I think they're both pretty rough for Erin. And my mom saved all of our first lost teeth!

For the record: I am not 100% sure Pam is right about Jim lying about this, and it occurs to me now, it completely changes the meaning of the fic whether he is or not. Is this Jim *again* ducking an adult conversation? Or is this Pam doing the exact same thing Jim does? Neat.

The network notes are increasingly becoming self-owns, I'm afraid. The next cold open should actually be cold open-sized though!

Thank you, and thanks for taking the time to review!

Summary:

Jim missing Cece's recital is what makes Pam realize she's falling back into her old ways. She's accepting things she doesn't want to accept and not standing up for herself like she should. She decides she needs to find herself again before her and Jim can be happy.

See I knew you'd have my heart in pieces. You really got to the emotions Pam was struggling with in Season 9. She'd come so far and to be feeling neglected and "gulp" the way she had with Roy well as you say, love doesn't always take away the pain.

I could see Helene's reaction as a reflection of her own experiences but to be honest it was heartbreaking to hear her give that advice.

But not as much as when she told him to go back to Philly. This is going to be a bumpy ride I can see but I'm looking forward to the angst-fest.

Well that left me a little broken. Pam must really be afraid of what she is feeling and how she will react to keep herself from even talking to him. That's rough...anxious to see how and if they can resolve things.

The thing that really struck me here is that Jim, who once knew everything about her, was unaware of the change in the schedule, even after she'd told him. That shows how very far he strayed from the man he once was.

Back when it was about not trusting the solidness of their relationship, the right thing to do was to turn the car around (which has got me thinking of a song here my musical friend- can you name it?) but this time I wished he'd kept going.

The little bit with Dwight was uplifting but the vision of Pam crying in the empty office - how could you leave us like that?

You have done it again...taken a feeling, mixed it with music and through your added words painted a masterpiece that completely enrapt me.

there were so many bits I loved - I'd be better to write down what didn't affect me - as every word was beautiful.

Still I'll share the things that I highlighted in purple in my mind.

'...traversing the forest of difficulties that life had thrown at them' beautifully said but I also appreciated how you included the line about arguments - reminding us that even in early days after what they had come from they were still a real couple whose first fight didn't happen in season9 - there were likely plenty along the way - but their love would always prevail.

The line about his clothes - it hit me like Pam - that their chemistry overshadowed his fashion faux pas and her committed status leading her to forbidden thoughts too.

There was a kind of magic in the way they communicated without words - the section about that described that perfectly.

The whole dialogue when Jim found the mixtape just tickled me but it was the basketball scene that really was such a delight. As I read it here I saw the look of pride Pam gave Jim as he game started - you've done so well expounding on that look and adding dimension to that whole episode.

The line from when she looked at the yearbook (Roy kissed another guy...) brought such a smile to my face and was so Jim. And the line I've waited years for you - Oh how I love him and you for writing this line for him.

The return from Pratt - the lighting in that scene was something wasn't it - so perfect was your description of it but the way you wrote his support made her decision easier but yet still hers to make was perfectly placed. And how you described his smirk - umm lady.

The drive home, the rooftop and the talk of the stars and the whole bit after booze cruise were all inspired for their realism and dimension.

These lines:
"That I loved you just as much as you loved me."
"The dream that they had composed and written together had become faded and worn, the notes discordant."
"When she had reached her breaking point, when the opposite pull of their dreams had the wire between them so thin it was unraveling, he chose her. He would always choose her."

No words just ...

now I must also say I caught your little nods to the deleted scenes, death of Receptionitis 5, car paid off, and I feel like there was one more that I can't quite remember now ooh yes the speech on booze cruise.

Ok now that I practically wrote a chapter's worth in my review may I just say - I loved it and that song - as I mentioned it's one I see the scenes in my head for them from the very first notes. Right onto my playlist.

Thank you for sharing this.

Author's Response: I love that your highlighter is purple, I just want to say. ;) You hit on so many of my favorite parts and I love that you picked up on all the deleted scenes I tried to include as well as the song lyrics tied in. It's always rewarding when that happens because I spend so much mental energy on them.  Thank you so much for your lovely words and thoughtful review!

Finally got to read this bit of closure. .

*Something stirs in her brain, as memories swirl about this apartment and her time with Roy. She had been honest when she said it wasn't all bad. It just was a square peg in a round hole situation, and they had both gotten comfortable with the way they had haphazardly tried to wedge themselves together over the years as they grew older and the edges sharpened.* what a well written way to describe what seemed to have occurred long ago but she had blinders on and couldn't see they no longer fit (if they ever did),

Nice to see him acknowledge some of his shortcomings and her talents.

And I do appreciate that Jim knew enough that she needed to do this on her own, secure enough to let her and supportive enough to have Chinese and love waiting for her at home.

Nice job wrapping it up and on the whole thing.

Omg I’m just glad Pam stopped at destroying memories from inside the teapot and not the teapot itself. I think that might have completely done me in. But I guess this was one of the things she needed to do to start moving on.

You really captured the essence of what she was going through in this post-casino night / pre-the job world. Glad to see that she at least is trying to move on.

Always like to get a little hope at the end of my angst.

Every line here was poetry.

Date: May 31, 2021 Title: Chapter 2: Buried in Our Bones

I hope my review isn't too jumbled and incoherent because that's kind of what you did to me with this one -left me unable to make thoughts. In Virtus- the backstory you gave was just enough but getting into this sequel, you knew we would need more which you delivered. The lines when they got held up causing his life to tilt on its axis....enemy that was everywhere and hard to identify...explained this immediate shift in Jim from civilian to warrior...further elucidated by ...she needed to stay alive...

Finding Larissa back at the hotel - amazing how for a character we never really saw in the show I could just hear and see her panic and desperation at finding them. The foreshadowing of Tom, Marci and Vanessa being mentioned while at Brian's makes in so much more heartbreaking later to hear of Marci's fate (and Tom's for that matter).

It is the starkness with how Jim tells Pam to shoot anyone not him or Brian You don't hesitate. Do you understand?  and means it that illustrates just how cosmic the shift is, how instantly the world has gone from Before to After - 2 simple words that you've attached more meaning to than I thought ever possible through the rest of the words that fill out these pages.

I wasn't sure who Abby belonged to at first, then realized I didn't need to just when I got it. Family need not be actually related here. Bonds were stronger than blood.

The scene with his concern about her hair was much needed levity as was the bit in the car with Mike.

Oh and I'll say again the last scene was visceral and haunting and this is going to be some dark sh*t. But even though you might not guess it because I write mostly cotton candy - I am fascinated by dark. Bring it on - can't wait.

Author's Response:

Thank you for picking up on that change in Jim. It needed to be quick and fierce. It is one of the reasons he has kept them alive as long as he has. I mentioned the entire scene in the first Virtus, when Jim was explaining to Mike how he came to be the way he was with guns and fighting and so I wanted to pull that back here and elaborate more.

Tom's story will unfold more and I wanted to show that contrast of what might have happend to Jim if things had played out differently for him.

It's funny you mention not knowing who Abby belonged to and that all the children are sort of are raised by everyone and that is very insightful and true. She is Isabel and Brian's which is why Isabel said she would take her and Brian just automatically picked her up when he came in the room.

I LOVE that you are fascinated by the dark, because in case it wasn't clear by my writing of these two fics -- same. :) Thanks!

Summary: Convinced they'll be different than any other friends who have tried and failed, Jim and Pam upgrade their friendship to add a few benefits. No really, it'll be fine.

Set during the summer between seasons 2 and 3 this will be canon divergent in that Katy and more importantly, Casino Night never happened.

First off I adore Melissa Joan Hart. And now I kind of see her as Larissa only with broader shoulders and a slightly larger nose

Now as usual you had me laughing with the disclaimer. No actually, from the title but because of that I was expecting something a little sillier where this was so much more. Seems our Halperts got more Sophisticated in their brand of humor, sass and subversion as each came along where tom and Pete are kind of silly but Larissa is now right sinister, but Jim is not only used to it but would give it back if he didn’t adore her so much.

I felt bad for both Pam and Karen here but felt good for us because this was so fun to read and left me wanting more. So don’t leave us hanging too long.

Ps have to add that you 100 nailed Jim here in that he hadn’t yet brought Karen around and wasn’t happy to have it forced upon him. Plus Pam already knew his sister says a lot.

Hope you are busy writing. Want more!

Author's Response: Iiiiiiiiiinteresting. I had Rita Volk down as Larissa, for reasons passing understanding, but Melissa Joan Hart just makes too much sense. I don't know, she's basically supposed to be John Krasinski in a wig, it's hard to think of who might be able to do that justice.

Yeah, the title is actually super misleading, so I hope people appreciated the gag - it definitely just gets darker from here. (Also, I totally forgot to mention this to Dernhelm... but I think there's particular voices that fit well with these disclaimers, and for some reason Stanley's is one of them.)

That is 100% the intention with the Halpert children, by the way - they get smarter, sassier and more difficult to defeat in reverse order of age. I think Jim knows Larissa means well (and you'll notice the one she *intentionally* tortures is Pam), and also she's his favorite.

Yeah, rough one for Pam. Even rougher for Karen, particularly in light of what's coming.

Oh, yeah. And Larissa knowing all that is definitely significant... as is her pre-existing relationship with Pam. (This is roughly set in the same universe as Real Friends, I think?)

No one idea when this one will be updated - I know exactly what the third chapter is and the second chapter is a mess. But hopefully soon?

Ok so I did not see that twist coming and while I feel bad that Karen is stuck there my heart is breaking for Pam.

Ok this - I promise, you’ll be getting free drinks off Michael Scott stories for the rest of your life.” Is a great line and so true

The clown reference really good one too as is the formaldehyde perfume lady. Of course Phllys would be the one to ask and then comfort poor Pam.

Yup - the last line. Karen saw it here if only she had on the show.

Oh and once again the disclaimer was too funny and a perfect example of how she gets beat up in fic or thrown into a porno. Now will these all be from the Karen POV because I'm so on board for that (but open to other tertiary characters too.. I also appreciate a good outside POV

Author's Response: I'm glad the twist worked. And I will restrain comment on Pam, but you never know... maybe this just gets her to her Beach Games moment faster?

It very much is. And I'm sure even in canon, Karen took advantage of it.

Yeah, I very much had Branch Closing shipper-on-board Phyllis in mind here.

Well... she found out eventually. But it raises some interesting questions as to how much her perception of Jim was shaped by why she THOUGHT he left Scranton.

See, now I'm rethinking that, and I want to be clear I have enjoyed many a fic in which Karen gets trashed and intend no shot at anyone here. But yes, these will mostly be from Karen's POV.

Good job with the rest too. Is she starting to realize how wrong the man who can’t make a phone call for *their* wedding is?

Hope so.

Author's Response:

See I didn't even think that it could be canon too, Roy not understanding Voldemort reference. He was sort of an ignorant one for sure. Interesting response from Pam's mom...with what she might already know but I see from your response to another review there may be more to come on that.

But I can also see it as Helene's wedding probably had a parallel similarity in the way it wasn't maybe everything she had always dreamed it would be but "good enough" and I liked how her pep talk was centered around the family they built and not so much about the love between her and her husband ... that seems about right knowing where there marriage winds up.

Glad Pam still has her doubts. Listen to them Pam.

Author's Response:

Thank you Maxine for picking up on that. I am from India, and that particular part about marriage centered around "Family" is something which has been very important element in our culture. This unfortunately, has been reason of many unhappy marriages but also have strengthened many weak bonds.

Either way, it may not be the best approach to look at marriage, without focusing on individuals involved in the relationship. Pam is getting there I am sure, thanks for sticking with her through this.

First off Happy Father's Day to you. In true Warrior fashion, on your day you have given us a gift with the story. I got all the feels reading it. Pam has really started to become so much like her husband in her Jim-like gestures. Arranging for Betsy and Gerald to come visit was a wonderful surprise for Jim and for us readers.

The exchange with the Astros jersey and the Phillies tee felt very real and in character for both of the men (and we barely even know Gerald but I just see this from him). And that's a good dad, letting his kid be his own person and not forcing his team on him and more than that supporting his support of the team he wants to follow.

The various scenes were all lovely and easy to picture. I haven't been to a Dave and Busters in forever, but I can remember how much fun it was to take the kids (and play games myself if I'm being honest - I've always been one to partake in the fun too) and enjoyed seeing they had their private time at end.

It was a nice way to mark the year - year and a half really - that we've all just lived through - and you've hit on a lot of the ordeals that we've had to adapt to over that time. But you always nailed that feeling of excitement being out again at things like ball games and indoor play spaces and seeing family and being able to hug them with confidence and love.

Well done on all fronts. Thanks for taking time to write and share this lovely piece.

Author's Response: Thanks Max. It was fun to bring this one to life. Espeically in light of the last year and a half or so. All of Pam's surprises were a lot of fun to bring in too. Glad you liked them all. Thanks as ever for the detailed review.

Summary:

'His mother would probably scold him with how often he tends to eavesdrop, but that doesn’t stop him from doing it anyway. He had to be observant in order to survive his two older brothers and the trait followed him to adulthood. Plus, if he was honest, he liked being able to find things out about strangers he would likely never see again. Learning secrets, finding out information, listening to arguments. There was nothing he could do with the stuff he heard, but he enjoyed knowing that the people surrounding him had their own lives just like he did.'

Of course there would be angst over miscommunication but with the resolution all was good in the world of Pam and Jim. The little nod to the alternate universe of this story that is the real universe of what we know was like a perfect little wink too.

Ha ha Aly.

Great minds think alike - don't know if you've had a chance to read the last chapter (Best Laid Plans of Mice and Salesmen) of my Another First Date - but you absolutely should if you haven't. A different approach to a similar gag...but you can say I'm a fan of the trick.

I can totally picture Pam's coy smile here too.

Fun stuff.

Author's Response: I havent gotten the chance to yet but I definitely will!! Cant believe I apparently did a very similar thing by accident lol! Thanks for the review, Max!

Oh I've rewound on that scene just to take another look - and not just for research.

What a sweet retelling and love that there's another Jim gesture around the corner with a trip to NY.

I do declare this was very sweet. But I really like the ending. I fully see Erin doing research like that for her character and then sharing with Pam. And I appreciate that you left it to our imagination and yet we fully know why he’s thanking Michael.

Nice job and very fitting to your pen name.
