I already told you how much I love this, but seriously.  No, really.  I LOVE THIS.

The first one is so sad, and so realistic in that her father doesn't show up until it's already over and she tells him she loves him even though she doesn't know how she really feels about him... oh, oh.  If someone thought she was a super-clingy kind of person, this background would explain it perfectly.  She's not going to want to wait for someone to come to her -- she's going to follow them and hang on while she can (like with Jim).

And OH LORD, number three makes me choke up a little because that is SO HOW IT IS.  And Karen not being upset because it's not her getting married but because she's losing-but-not-losing her sister is just completely bittersweet and wonderful.  The scene with the two of them in the bathroom is such a perfect way to show us the kind of relationship they have.

And the Jim/Karen section is so beautifully written, the way Jim can't (what is with Jim and Pam and being so I can't about things?) and the way she says it gently so as not to break him (oh, oh). Also, 'burns' is a fabulous replacement, my dear.  Awesome job with that bit -- I think it really conveys what Karen's feeling to the reader.

The ending is just SO FANTASTIC, with the whole loving other people and both of them being there just to have something when they can't have what they really want.  It's all just a mess, there at the end, but it's so lovely and incredibly written and just-- you know.  Just ridiculously good.

Also, I know I say 'oh' a lot and don't really explain what I mean, but a lot of the time (especially in this story), I can't think of anything to say to express how much a certain section touched me, so.  Just imagine a tone of awe in my voice, and the 'ohs' might make a little more sense. :)

Author's Response:

Hee!  I'm glad you like the replacement.  You were so right in telling me to change that.

All of your "ohs" (I counted five) made perfect sense and they really make me feel good about this story!  Thank you again for betaing (whatever) this and thank you so, so much for reviewing, too!

When you tell me your plan, a giggle laced through your words, I have to work hard to concentrate...

So I'm reviewing this as I go along, basically because I'm having a bit of an OH MY GOD moment.

I've heard tell of what an awesome writer you are, but I hadn't really read anything by you (or so I thought) so I decided to give this a try (not only because of everything I've heard about you but also because it is such a gorgeous title).  Then, lo and behold, I realized that you were the one who wrote there's nothing on my horizon except everything and now you've written this and my brain has exploded, just a little.  NO WONDER EVERYONE IS CRAZY ABOUT YOUR WORK.  When you come up with lines like there would be no weekends (those blank stretches where they don't exist together), it's pretty obvious that you're an incredibly talented writer.  Because OH, I love that line.

And Pam, oh Pam, the part where she goes home and doesn't call him or email him or write him, and then she can't draw either because it's like she's got nothing left... seriously.  That's such a subtle, perfect way of saying how she feels without having to say, "And now Pam is sad because she is lonely without Jim."

And the end, with like one of them struck a match and started the whole thing over again, just GUH.  This is so beautiful, and I love the way you've structured it because every sentence is important and fabulously written... oh man.  Just-- just... incredible work.  Really.

Author's Response:

Ha, I wasn't thinking way back when I set up my account here, and on LJ, so it gets confusing when people refer to me as CNR instead of Bennie.  I don't do well with internet handles, I guess. :)

Sorry I made your brain explode!  I'm so glad that you liked this (and there's nothing on my horizon...) and this is, I think, one of the most thoughtful and detailed reviews I've ever received.  You have picked up on absolutely everything I was trying to get across, and then some.  I'm so glad you liked the structure, too, because this is the second time I've used it and I didn't want to seem redundant, or something.  Just...thank you.  (And, you know, you're a pretty amazing writer yourself. :))

Fantastic job with this.  I love it!

Oh, Dwangela.  They are my newest love. <3

You've written them so well and I love how this whole thing is just entirely dialogue -- it's a different writing style, but I think it worked out really great.  And Angela being the only one able to withstand the evil forces of sexuality from the stripper, haha.  And asking if Dwight thought the stripper was pretty!  Rather reminiscent of Ryan and Kelly, and oh so cute.  Thanks for this. :)

Author's Response: Thank you! Your comments are always so encouraging; I really appreciate you taking the time to point out what you like. This piece was a challenge- the style really came out of me being so worried about not getting their voices right that I decided to focus on just their voices. It wouldn't work for a longer piece, but it was fun to do somethign different. I love them, too.

Overall, I really liked this.  There were a lot of parts I thought you did so well, like the lead up to Roy and Pam having sex, and how it wasn't supposed to be tearful because she wasn't supposed to be emotional about anything right then, and the way she stayed because he obviously still wants her and she's lonely enough that she wants someone warm and familiar to wrap around herself... all those parts were SO lovely, and so the Pam we're seeing these days.

However -- and I'm so freaking afraid of doing this because I've never really tried to give anyone constructive criticism before other than while beta'ing and I really, really don't want you to think I didn't enjoy this because I definitely did --  there were a few parts I thought could have been better.  You mentioned on the TWoP forums concerns about things being OOC, and that was one of the things I noticed here.  Not that it was an insanely obvious thing or anything like that, and I do think you did a nice job with Pam's characterization, but something about Roy didn't feel right to me.  It's very possible that it's just my own interpretation of his character, but I don't think he's really changed that much from who he used to be.  I'm not sure I can really believe that they would have had a heart-to-heart chat in the morning, and I really don't think he would have urged her to fight for Jim.  He might grudgingly say something like, "Do what you want," but I don't think he'd really be rooting for her to get together with Jim.  Also, I don't think Roy would have been at all surprised to hear that she was in love with him.  I mean, maybe a little, since he's not really privy to all the stuff we know, like the kiss and the confession and everything, but I really think that he had some sense of what was going on all this time between them.  He was jealous of Jim a few times -- or not jealous, but, like, possessive of Pam when Jim was around -- so I don't think it would shock him to hear that his possessive feelings were grounded in something that was really happening, and not just in his imagination.

This is all SO based on my own speculations, but I wanted to let you know what I thought since you were concerned about the very thing I picked up on.  I still honestly, really, really liked this, and I think you did a great job on it.  I hope you're not upset or angry about what I had to say here, because it really wasn't a major thing.  I enjoyed this a lot. :)

Author's Response:

Wow, thanks so much! No, this review was awesome. It's good to know if you thought the characterization was off and why, but that you still really liked the story! This is how I interpreted things in my head before I'd even read anyone's opinions about the episode last night, and then when I did read what others said, and people were saying how Roy's change seemed like such a facade, and that he's still the same person, but trying to make it seem like he's changed just to get Pam back, I realized that's probably true. In my head, I'd thought that some of it seemed fake, but maybe he did change a little, and his time away from Pam made him realize that if he couldn't give her what she needed, then he'd want her to be with someone who could. But I can see now that maybe he hasn't changed at all and wouldn't be in that mindset at all.
But I don't know about him being clued into her feelings for Jim. To me, he'd always seemed so oblivious, like on "Casino Night" when he told Jim to "keep an eye on her." I mean, if Roy thought there was any feelings between the two of them, I don't think he would have said anything to Jim like that while he was leaving. But that's just my interpretation.

Anyway, thanks again for the awesome feedback! It helps a lot!

This is too, too good.  Even though Angela isn't actually part of the action in this, the way you've characterized her is perfect, and I love the line about Toby picturing her wearing something snug, dark, and severe.  You've done fabulously with Toby as well.  I think it's great the way you talked about how he's not into internet porn or dirty magazines -- he does seem much more the type to take something from his everyday life and use that instead, and the fact that it's Angela just... oh.  Perfect.  She is the sharp, strong contrast to his mopey, sad self.  I love it.  This is completely wonderful.

And the ending!  With Dwight!  Just too funny and fabulous.  Thanks for this!

Author's Response:

This is very much inspired by my husband's swoony love of sexy/severe Angela -- I have seen the scene of Angela in her tight black skirt from The Convention many, many times.  ;)

Oh, wow.  This is such an insightful look into Meredith's background.  I loved the part about sharing pencils and pens because it's so intimate and secret, and I loved the part about being able to tell Jim wants to be the one to moan into Pam's hair.  You've just done such a lovely job fleshing out Meredith's character and talking about the whole Jim/Pam situation from an outsider's perspective -- this is great.  Thanks so much!

Author's Response: Thank you very much. I was hoping the chewed-pencil thing wouldn't come across as icky.

This is just beautifully written.  So, so many good lines, and the anticipation Pam feels when she's waiting for a reply to her email is absolutely exquisite and delicious and YES.  And yay for Pam, finally, finally making a move and being bold, and yay for you for making it all believable and in-character.

Even though ALL of it was lovely, I think the second and third parts were my favorites.  They were just... delicate, and subtle, and poetic, and meaningful, and GOOD.  I love how you have Pam recognizing the symbolism of her desk and her job, and even if she doesn't think it says anything about her, I think it does, and it's just gorgeous that you make her aware of the connection.

Beautiful job.  This is lovely.

This is absolutely lovely, as all of your wonderfully character-driven pieces are.  I just can't understand how you think of things that seem so random -- like here, with the dancing and scoliosis -- that just seem to fit so, so perfectly with the character and their previous/current situations... beautiful.  I love that Bob seems to know that she wants to go dancing -- that seems like the kind of thing he'd do/the kind of couple they'd be.

Lovely, lovely job.

Beautiful prelude to West -- or, at least, that's how I see it. :)

As always, your writing basically hits me straight in the gut because it is so honest and realistic and evocative and wonderful and have I mentioned how much I love the way you use your dashes?  They add realism, of course, especially in dialogue, but I love them more particularly because they're used to kind of lead the reader forward, but then stop, like this is something too profound for words, but you know what I mean.

Just lovely.

Beautiful.  Absolutely, completely.

So, so many good, quotable lines in here, like he inhales like he might be breathing her in and if he keeps all the random pieces of her he's collected over the years hidden in the back of a drawer, he doesn't have to admit what it means.  I love the feel of this, because it's still hopeful with the way she doesn't mention Roy and the way they act like they're almost together.  Awesome dialogue, too, by the way -- witty and quick and very them.  Lovely ending.  Beautiful job.  I love this.

Perfectly them, as I would expect from you, and the ending is just completely killer and almost like it's showing that Karen knows what's going to happen but she's deluding herself into believing what they have is everything and it's going to stay that way.  Love the lines about the orange juice and the comics -- even with so few spoken lines, you always manage to characterize Jim wonderfully.

This is lovely.  I love the parallel between Roy's inability and Jim's ability to admit when something hurts -- that's a great way to show just one way that they're different, one way that makes a huge difference in their "rightness" for Pam.  And Jim, oh Jim, hiding his face so she couldn't see where Roy had hit him, and not blaming Pam at all, and just... Jim.  Yes, yes, yes.

My favorite line:  It's the kind that's not full of things unsaid, but full of questions with half-answers and almost-truths.  It feels like progress, maybe, from where they used to be.

Gorgeous job!  This is fabulous.

Author's Response:

Thank you so much!  ♥  I don't know why, but that difference between Jim and Roy has always stuck out to me.  I know it's supposed to, but for some reason it's so much more significant than the "Jim is so funny" thing.  It's obvious he's sensitive and like to talk about things, even though he does tend to hide.

This is lovely.  I love the tension you create throughout the day while everyone's waiting for Jim to come back, with Dwight actually working quietly and Pam being unable to concentrate on anything, even her drawing (and for some reason, the idea of Pam drawing the edge of her keyboard is a really powerful image to me, maybe because... I don't even know.  It's her job, and her artistic talent, and her nervousness all rolled into one and just- like I said, I don't know why).

You've got some awesome images in here too, besides the sketch of the keyboard, like the moon-shaped indents in her sandwich bag, and the way Jim's just suddenly there when she looks up... fabulous.  There's something really quietly powerful about this piece.

My favorite line: ...and the friction almost hurts on her raw lips but she refuses to care, because maybe that's the way it's supposed to be, maybe things have to be raw and open and painful sometimes.  GORGEOUS.

This is a seriously wonderful piece.  I have a lot of love for it.

Author's Response:

Your review just made my day. =D! It's nice to see somebody respond to the little things I try and shuffle into my pieces. The keyboard thing was like "...YES." for me, because I went through a few options with that (another mug, Michael's somber face, the door) and settled on the keyboard.

Thank you. Authors love it when a reviewer takes this much time and care - thanks so much.

This is so, so hilariously Kevin that it's hard to comprehend.  My favorite line was probably the one that you used as your summary -- what a great phrase.  I loved your descriptions of the different ways Kevin eats M&Ms, and all the repetition of the number three.  As for the Jim/Kevin, it's fabulous because it's understated and easy and just... not so dramatic and dark and heavy.

Love this.  You are my hero.

Author's Response:

Thank you!  I'm so glad you mentioned the fact that it's not dramatic...I find that most slash (even though this is technically -ish) is always angsty and whatnot, because you need that...element of desperation to make the slashy interaction believable, you know?  But with Kevin and Jim...it just doesn't fit.  I love them and I love you and I really wish I had M&Ms right now.  (random)

I don't think I've been anyone's hero before...I feel like Kevin trapping the bat!

My favorite line: And he hears it before he feels it, the way bone against bone really does sound like someone knocking at the front door, how his neck actually cracks and he thinks, "I hope I don't die" like an afterthought.

Just brilliant and gorgeous and wonderful.  Amazing job!  Off to read the rest...

Beautiful use of an extended metaphor (or whatever you want to call it).  Love the last line, and the whole discussion about recklessness and precaution and persistence -- the point is clear that they're talking about something other than what they're talking about, but it's still subtle somehow.  I didn't feel banged over the head by it, which I attribute to your massively large amount of talent.

I think one of the things I love most about your writing is the vividness with which you convey the scene and the emotion -- They both sit there and let the sound ring until it's gone being my favorite example from this particular piece.  Well, that and your dialogue, because it's always perfectly phrased and poignant.

Vending machine/breakroom love!  Twix bars are amaaaaazing, and then you go and add them into this whole thing, with Jim and Pam and conversations about picking at scabs like there's something to find underneath... you are fabulous.  I don't know how else to say it.

SO SO SO HOT.

Seriously, with the almost-fully-clothed-ness, and the against the door, and the thigh on the seam of her jeans, just-- yeah.  YES.

I'm slightly incoherent.  This is completely, completely fabulous.  WELL DONE.

Author's Response:

Thank you, I appreciate the comment.  Yeah, I seem to have a thing about sex-through-clothes  ;)

I think you've done a really fabulous job with this -- I love the parallels you drawn between Jan and Pam, and considering how short this is, it's really rich and full and, frankly, impressive.  Lots and lots of fabulous lines, like she only nods, lips curling and this is where regret ends and it's a nice secret and she swirls it in her mouth in the break room, because leaving is final and she can take that chance (once).

Really, really nice job.  This is definitely different from a lot of things I've seen/read, but it a really great way.  I enjoyed this so much.

Author's Response: wow thanks so much, glad you liked it!

Hilarious!  I love all the names -- the Tempinator, Dunderman, etc.  Those are completely brilliant.  There's something about this that is very Dwight, probably because of the way he insists on calling them his 'spectacles' and knowing/understanding/believing he's off to save the world.  I thought you were going to go with, 'and then he woke up blah blah,' but this was almost better -- Dwight really does think of himself as some form of a hero (though not quite as high up as Hiro from Heroes).

Really great job with this.  Such a fun read.

Gorgeous imagery.  Everything about this is content and warm and happy and so, so full of the something that makes what they have exactly what it is.  Love the beginning and the ending, and line about finding the spaces between his ribs with her fingertips.  Lovely.
