A great story.  Jim and Pam as parents of Pam's sister's baby is just too cute.  The story is well written, extremely dramatic, but also has many sweet family scenes throughout.

I love the imagery of how Jim's favourite memory of Pam was her bathed in light.  Its so beautiful, it reads like a film- I could very much picture it in my head.

Author's Response: Do you remember that photo of JF, standing in a kitchen, with only a blanket draped around her? That's the image. So pleased you thought it felt like a film - that's a great compliment. Thanks so much, StarryDreamer! (So much fun to find new reviews for old fics too!)

I love, love, LOVE your internal monologue stuff.  I must be a glutton for angst, cause I totally eat it up.  Your writing is so visual and the characters' "voices" so perfect that I can see them literally in my head having these conflicts.  Glad I found another winner!!

Summary:

This is essentially my take on the "unseen" challenge. I've written a couple of these, and I originally thought I'd do one for every episode, but I'm thinking that's too ambitious for me -- especially when someone else has already done it so perfectly. But for what it's worth....

Here I am again- writing before I've finished reading the story.  Just as I'm about to call it a night, I think I (subconciously) picked the perfect chapter to end the night with.  The inclusion of Jim's mother was perfect (don't worry!) and the book- I can't believe this book exists.  The lines you selected are beautiful and fit so exactly into the story.  And Jim's notation... sublime.  I know you seem to have an aversion to angst-filled chapters, but I love them.  It just seems real to me considering the place Jim/Pam are at in season 2.

I also think I've just added another book to my summer reading list ;-)

About 2 chapters ago I realized that the reason you had Jim/Pam kiss while one was drunk was to lead up to Casino Night.  And now Pam saying that she thought they were "just drunk" in show makes sense within the context of your story as well.  I think my fanfiction and show realities are starting to blur lmao.  But maybe I should be thanking you for that...
Did you write this story, pre- or post-Casino Night?  Because if you wrote it BEFORE Casino Night the kissing throughout was ingenious.
Great chapter as always, but by now you should be fully aware of the extent of my fangirl status.

Author's Response:

In answer to your question - I actually wrote the whole thing after Casino Night but before the season premiere, so I didn't know about the "Maybe we're just drunk" connection.  And actually, I'd never thought of it before until you pointed it out - weird!

And hey, you can totally be my fangirl; I love the feedback!  :O)

“I’m yours.” She loved saying the words. “I don’t care how far away you are – Stamford, Alaska, New Zealand – wherever.  You’re just….it.”

Le sigh. Even though this wasn't how things ended in the show- its still fits just as perfectly.  And I'll gladly suspend my belief. Download Chantal Kreviazuk's "Time"- it was what I was listening to while reading this chapter and I couldn't believe how perfectly it fit with your story.

So I was refreshing MTT and this popped up as one of the random stories of the moment. It must have initally been missed by me.  I swear this "fallout" from the kiss is just brilliant.  Hysterical Pam is just so perfectly written by you.  I completely agree that she would be just beside herself, unable to figure out what to do next. It makes complete sense that she wouldn't just rush into things with Jim (and she didn't, did she?) But what stilled my heart was when she told Jim that things were going to be awful for a while... and they were weren't they?  But in a different way.  Regardless you never seize to amaze me with who perfectly you capture the characterisation of Jim and Pam. Brava!

This storry is so sweet.  I agree with you- I think its a reasonable assumption to make that Jim would have been in love previously.  And I absolutely love how you managed to incorporate her into the story.  The ending couldn't have been more beautiful. Amazing!

Author's Response: Wow, this is an old one...hadn't thought about it in ages and just went back and skimmed it myself. I think it was like my 3rd story ever and between that and the time it was written (last summer,) it just seems so hopeful. Also only time I ever used a non-canon character...glad you thought she worked - I recall being a bit uneasy about that. I think I was just really craving some Jim-back story at that point - happy you agree it makes sense for him to have been in love once before. Anyway, before this becomes a novella...I'll just say thanks, StarryDreamer, for your lovely review.

Author's Response: Well, not consciously a series, but there definitely are some recurrent elements that seem to pop up in my stories...kind of my Office universe and welcome to it, I guess! I had been waiting until Spring Break rolled around so that I could devote the time to reading this story from start to finish. As luck would have it mother nature blew in and prevented me from going to work, thus giving me a day off to enjoy and appreciate this work of art.  My favourite scene in the entire story was Pam calling Jim telling him to come back.  My heart literally just jumped at that scene.  It said so many things in so little words.  I liked that you made Jim & Pam realistic, but sexual beings. *blush*  Some of those scenes...

Fantastic piece of work.  But I almost felt that it ended perfectly yet could continue... it was weird.  Anyway, you should be immensely proud of yourself.  Your story is amazing.

I like the flipping from the past to the present to the future.  And the ending- amazing!  The ending was perfect.  So poignant.

Author's Response: How incredibly flattering that you're digging these older stories out! So glad you like the ending (the final line actually drove the entire story) and the inverted/non-linear structure.  Have to say, this story is still very close to my heart. Obviously written before S3, hence out of sync with what actually happened...so happy it has some resonance for you anyway. Thanks StarryDreamer - much appreciate the review.

This picks up pre-merger and is spoiler free, a bit AU as well.  I began this back in October (maybe even September), and obviously the show has deviated quite a bit from what I speculated here.

This begins with angst, but there is a great deal of fluff, steam, smut, and silly...for several, several chapters.  My idea was to go beyond the happy ending, so to speak.

Seriously this line made me sigh.  Wow.
And the whole meeting in the chapel before the wedding bit?  In one of the rare instances I actually pictured Jim.  Weirdly enough, this rarely happens when I actually picture the characters in my head- so to see Jim talking to Pam really made me swoon (and means that it was damn good description.

Author's Response:

Ooh, I'm glad that moment rang true for you -- like I said, totally stole it from my own experience, and of all our wedding photos, that moment in the chapel (we were both totally unaware that the photographer was off snapping pictures) is one of my favorites.

girl7- I'm sure I've said this before, but I'm going to say it again: your fanfic gives me unrealistic notions about romance!  (this is not a bad thing... I think....)  I love that Jim is so sweet and caring and always thinking of ways to demonstrate his love for Pam (yikes, I actually typed "me" instead of Pam... shows you where MY head is at!) I can always trust that your stories will end perfectly- thanks for another great, romance-filled chapter.

Author's Response:

Not a bad thing - another translation for unrealistic romantic notions would be that you'll never settle.  (See how I turned that around?) I actually felt a bit guilty when I was writing this, because I could not for the life of me come up with any kind of grand gesture for Jim to make -- I caught myself thinking that I'd probably make someone a sucky boyfriend.  (That statement was wrong for many, many reasons.)

Anyway, thanks again, my friend, for all the copious feedback!

Okay Michael was so Michael, but that nameplate was just the perfect gift.  And all the Jam love from the relatives had ME wisping.  These fictional characters make me seem too hormonal and give me a false sense of romance ;-)  but I'm okay with that!

Author's Response: Oh, thanks so much!  I was worried that the two Halpert family speeches would be too sentimental or over the top (though in my defense, I got much of the same at my rehearsal dinner, so....).  But yeah, I love writing silly Michael and sappy sweet Jim and Pam.  :o) Thank you so much for reviewing!  (And for being such a vocal supporter, too.)

Author's Response:

I'm really glad that you're finding it compelling even beyond the "happy ending," so to speak.  I've mentioned before that I find it incredibly problematic that most fiction (not fanfiction) ends with the ostensible resoultion (i.e. couple gets together/engaged/wed).  I really wanted to follow it through beyond that for at least a few chapters.

Thanks again for reviewing!

Duuuude.  Why did you make me feel sorry for Karen?  *grumbles* tsk tsk.  Karen should=EVVVVIL (redrum! redrum!) ;-)
Count me in the bandwagon that is crushing on Jonathon (soooo Scott Foley to me too- what was Jennifer Garner thinking when she cheated on him???) But in that previous chapter with Jon and Pam- I was very nervous. Very, very nervous.  It really seemed like they were going to have a "moment" (but then I always remind myself who's story I'm reading and I'm comforted).  Still have a long way to go in this story (30+ chapters! Oy vey! Lots of Spring Break reading ahead of me) But wanted to pop in and let you know that I'm reading and enjoying...

Author's Response:

Eee, I'm so glad!  Yeah, Scott Foley is one of my big crushes, and while Jonathan is admittedly a bit of a Mary Sue (I think that's what they call it)...well, people seem to respond to him well, so I'll keep him coming (*cough*, stifling a TWSS) - though I'm making more of an effort to render him more realistic and less like a guy who sits around waiting for Jim to call him.  :o)

The weird thing about this story is that I really wasn't sure that it worked - and then so many people expressed an interest in it that I had to keep going.  I have enjoyed taking Pam and Jim beyond the happy ending - partly because I loathe the traditional ending at the wedding type story (am suspicious of such stories, actually - not in the fanfic realm, but beyond).  But it's also because I believe these two could be just as enjoyable as a couple, settled, happy....

Re: The Pam/Jonathan tension - the drama queen in me was really dying to make that happen, but ultimately I knew it'd just be a rotten thing for both of them to do.  So I left it at a hint.  :o)  Seriously, though, I love the idea of Pam feeling an instant connection with Jonathan just because he's Jim's brother; I think it'd be really sweet in many ways, you know?  (And don't think I wasn't tearing my hair out that J.J. Abrams directed - the creator of Felicity, launcher of Scott Foley's career - so, so close....)

As always, thanks for the review - glad you're enjoying this lumbering epic!

Aw!  So sweet!  I know you've decided to head back to school to work on a literature/writing degree- but seriously your writing is very fluid and very reminiscent of chick-lit or romance novels (in some more MA cases ;-) You should consider piling together a manuscript of a story and see what happens.  The realization came to me at the point in this story when you hadn't revealed what Pam's note to Jim (in the folder) had said until the end- leaving the perfect set up for the next chapter- and I hadn't noticed until that point!  That, my dear, is the sign of a talented writer.
