Oh yeah, that first trimester is SUCH a bitch.  Thank goodness happier times are ahead for poor Jim.  Significant others around the world can sympathize, I'm sure.

Love this, Colette!  I cannot wait for more!!

Author's Response: So pleased you think Pam's mood here rings true - and that I'm not the only one with less than happy bunny memories of those early months. I'm cooking up some more right now - so stay tuned. And much thanks again, kells!

Yay! New Colette?  A Happy New Year, indeed!

Of course Jim wants a baby.  I totally see Jim as a family guy, and of course your characterizations are spot on, as always!

So exited...reading on now....

Author's Response: Why thank you, kells! And I agree - I think Jim wants the whole nine yards with Pam. In fact, he waited so long, make that ten yards!

First of all, I've had some wine.  So feel free to disregard this entire review.

Awww...Jim is being such a good hubby here.  So supportive of mommy-to-be.  Don't worry, Jim, Pam will be feeling better soon. :)

I can only imagine the comments from Michael....And, it's true that common sense has nothing to do with Pam's thinking at the moment.

I know this is for a later chapter, but remind me sometime to tell you about my comedy sketch.  It's called, "Sex During the Ninth Month of Pregnancy" and I used to have my workmates howling when I performed it for them.  LOL.

Can't wait for the "M" rated stuff.  Cuz' I know how well you write it for these two.  cough!ThatNightcough!

Author's Response: Sorry, EH...not going to disregard this, wine or no wine ;-) Would love to hear about your sketch - 3rd trimester will be the 4th chapter, so it could be good research material, lol. Writing Michael is really fun - and Jim...well, he'll be rewarded for being such a mensch. Promise. Thanks again! (And hope the next chapter doesn't disappoint - think That Night, but replace the angst with estrogen ;-)

Oh, Pam, 1st trimester is just mind-numbing the first time through!  I remember I could tell I was pregnant because I couldn't stand to wear a bra at all.  Nice timing, huh?

And your hormones are literally poisoning you, making you nauseous, right when all the books are telling you how important it is to eat well.  ARGH!

And poor Jim -- look but don't touch.  I hope the next trimester is better to him *wink*

Author's Response: Yeah, those first couple of months are a beautiful thing, aren't they? I was so queasy with my first that I actually lost weight...but made up for it later (and then some.) Well, glad this seems real to you, and thanks Lisa (oh, and not to worry about Jim - I'm well into the next chapter and he's faring much, much better.)

This is such a cute story.  It brings back some old memories of my pregnancies.  I'm really enjoying it.

Author's Response: Pleased to hear it, khan2stooges...oddly, this last chapter brought back memories of mine too, minus Jim, of course. Thanks so much!

Love this!  I can so see this playing out (especially Michael and Dwight--ha!)

Can't wait for more!

Author's Response: So happy you thought the Michael and Dwight stuff worked - they're too much fun to write. Thanks much JRAddict!

I'm such a sucker for baby fics so loving this story, but it makes me a bit uneasy too. I hope Pam starts to find some happiness in her situation.

Author's Response: Hang in there - once those second semester hormones kick in, she'll find lots of good things. Thanks for reading and reviewing, juteux!

This is lovely.  I also enjoyed the Joni Mitchell at the end.  She's a wonderful inspiration.

Looking forward to Pam bulking up!

Author's Response: So glad the Joni ref made sense to you...she is an endless source, isn't she? Thanks so much for your generous review, Beeswax!

Normally I don't comment on too many pregnancy fics (simply cuz I can't relate), but i loved the closing line of this one: He felt like an island beneath her, the current breaking all around them. Just beautiful :)

Author's Response: Well, this is a first for both of us then - I've had Pam incidentally pregnant in fics once or twice, but this is my first real pregnancy fic...hopefully, it will go in a slightly unique direction in upcoming chapters ;-) Anyway, glad that line struck you and thanks so much for reviewing, CashBasket!

So many things to love - especially non-begging Jim. ;)   I'm trying to find the right words - a real problem for me lately as you know. :( - and all I can think of is that this is simply soft and dreamy.  Honestly.  That's the way it seems to me - like the words float around you as you read.

Or maybe it's that I'm hopped up on anti-histimines. ;)

Either way you know I love it - and you for sharing it with us.

Author's Response: I'll take soft and dreamy - with or without the meds ;-) Glad this is working for you, and that Jim doesn't appear to be begging...that would not be pretty. Thanks for everything, you..and feel better!

"For a moment, the way his eyes went soft and watery made her forget all her reasons why not."

Collette, you write such heartwarming stories that are always a delight to read.  The line above was just beautiful.

Author's Response: Well, thank you kaystar. Happy - and flattered - you feel that way!

Things I love about this story (so far):

  1. There's more to come!
  2. It's rated "M"!
  3. You're writing it!
  4. It starts with Joni Mitchell - you know how to kick me in the nostalgia-bone
  5. General Patton
  6. "Here goes nothing"
  7. Jim whispering "okay" into her hair
  8. "piece of portentous plastic"
  9. James Danger Halpert, Jr.
  10. She whispered in his ear right then (because a moment like that should be marked): love you. I love you. I love you. His reply was just her own murmured name, and that marked it too. She’d clung to him and they’d stayed locked together for a very long time, even for them, past the ringing alarm, until the room was filled with light.

What a perfect way to start the new year!!  So excited to read what's coming next, Colette.

Author's Response: Glad you liked that passage - wanted to 'mark' the moment, but in a quiet way. Re: Joni - I'm not usually one to name fics for songs (and can I go anymore un-hipster with my choice, lol?) but I've always loved that one and though it's about a v. different situation (unplanned teen preg, hello) I think it gets at something everyone feels in this circumstance - sort of a bittersweet mix of hope/anxiety/magic/not really being ready, etc. And that particular line just seemed right for that intangible thing between the two of them, especially now. So, I hope it makes sense here. (When you write these things, so much is in your own head, you never know.) And about it being 'M' - like I said, there are fics that deal with the sexuality of 'getting' knocked-up, but I haven't seen many that really focus on it once the tyke's in the oven. And, I know it's not just me who didn't turn into Carol Brady post conception ;-) Anyway, before I write you a whole new chapter here, I'll stop at saying thanks, Sweetpea! I'm psyched that you're psyched.

So. good.  Seriously.  Pam's hesitation and Jim's enthusiasm are very realistic, I think.  And the plastic markers and the lovely baby-making moment...and, well, a wonderful start.  Looking forward to more.

Author's Response: And more ye shall receive ;-) Pleased this seems realistic. Want to do a slightly more intimate look at the whole preggers thing, not so much about the baby but the dynamic between them while it's in the oven - hope I can pull it off. Thanks so much, bitterpill!

Ok, did Santa forward my Christmas list to you? Colette writing about Jim and Pam having a baby....that just might be my dream come true. No pressure, but this is my favorite new thing and it's not even on the second chapter yet.

Making a baby with General Patton...fabulous.

Author's Response: Yay! But, I think this will stop short of an actual baby (that's your forte, my friend!) Lots of pregnancy ups/downs to come though - and why does that sound like a big TWSS? So glad this is working for you, LoveFool...more soon!

Excellent, another "Mr. and Mrs. Halpert Pregnancy" fic.  So great.  I like how she's so ambivalent at first, then feels guilty about her reluctance, then finally tosses the pills and says "To hell with it!"  Probably the best way to decide, since nobody's ever totally ready for kids.  It's either that or get drunk and forget whatever barrier device you normally use.  Whatevs.  Looking foward to the first trimester - oh fun!

Author's Response: So pleased her ambivalence/mixed emotions rang true for you EH...the 1st trimester won't be easy (is it ever?) but hang in there, cause in the second...well, let's just say that Jim's patience will be well rewarded ;-) Never understood the idea that once pregnant, a girl morphs into Donna Reed - estrogen is heady stuff, as I recall - if you catch my drift, lol.  Thanks so much for reading/reviewing!

Colette baby fic? Sign me up! I love what you've done here with Pam's state of mind. Having a baby is scary stuff (not that I would know, but even thinking about it scares me!) But I also loved this:

This would make them irrevocable. And that was the one thing she was sure she wanted. Without condition, without looking back. The alternative was unbearable.

I am getting to that age where some of my friends and acquaintances are starting to have babies, and this totally nailed why I feel happy yet feel a little trepidation for them. They still have to do so many things! Ahh! But I guess if they've found their Jim...more power to them. Anyways, can't wait to see where you go with this one.

Author's Response: Well, I don't know if this will actually be a baby fic, in that it will probably end before the bambino makes an appearance...but it will be a preggers fic, so I hope that suffices, lol. And hell yeah, it's scary stuff - even if you've found your Jim, lol. Thanks so much and stay tuned, supergirlsudz!

Yes! Sane people freak out a bit at the idea of another living being coming along and depending totally upon them.  And who wouldn't change their mind on an hourly basis about that?

I love the little detail about little pieces of plastic marking the mileposts along the way.

Looking forward to a Colette fic with plot!  What's that like  ;o)

Author's Response: Ha! A plot...yeah, my last few fics have definitely dispensed with that little literary convention, lol. Can't say this will be a particularly complicated one, but it will involve steamy pregnancy shenanigans, so there's that ;-) Thanks so much, Lisa...oh, and stay tuned for the Venus of W., my friend ;-)

Love this so much--but then I knew I would love it as soon as I saw your name, Colette.  It's like buying new music by an artist you love without even having to listen to it first to be sure.  I hope that makes sense : )  So excited to read more.

Author's Response: It does make sense, and it's also incredibly flattering. Hopefully will have chapter 2 for you tomorrow. Thanks so much, NanReg!

Outstanding.  Always great to see some new Colette.  I particularly loved this:

Regardless of how positively the discussion began, inevitably everything she’d never done would swirl through the air between them. She’d never finished school; never driven a convertible; never learned to use a potter’s wheel. She’d never been to Paris.

I will definitely be excited to see exactly where you go with this.   Happy New Year to you.
