She sits on her couch with a cup of tea and stares at the 16-inch miniature Christmas tree on the small folding table beneath her windowsill.
She’d decided not to invest too much in the holidays this year since she’d be spending them at her parents’ house.
She reaches out and tries to straighten the small silver star atop the tree, to no avail, and has to set her three-quarters full mug down to brace herself as her eyes sting with the familiar threat of tears.
She wants to decorate for someone.
I can’t.
Absence and longing make her tired.
