How Not To by agian18 Rated: M [Reviews - 112] 99
Summary:

Meeting in an unusual place in life, a broken Jim and Pam try their best to put the pieces of their lives back together while not falling apart and back down the hole that they're trying to help one another out of.

Based on the song "How Not To" by Dan + Shay, because do I *ever* write something that *isn't* based on a song?

AG I gasped at the end of this, honestly. I didn’t see it coming at all and I loved it.

I’m like. So proud of them! The character growth that we’ve seen throughout this story is incredible. And it stays in line with what we know from the show and just the fundamentals of how they’re written canonically. So it’s really like these two friends that I know and love that do this hard thing and are doing a great job!

Loved the IMs. LOVED the prank. Loved the history with Ryan and the darts and just how enamored Jim is, you wrote that SO well, but honestly that’s literally every word that you type so I’m not surprised.

Ugh. Perfection.

Summary:

A brief snapshot of Pam and Jim's first date after "The Job", completely based on the lyrics of the Taylor Swift song "Begin Again".

I am leaving a review so you have another one even though you know all my thoughts because I bombarded you with them against your will. This is perfection. Imagine me clapping my hands like Kelly but instead of “fashion show” I’m going “Farmer Jim! Farmer Jim! Farmer Jim at lunch! (And all the time)”

Reviewer: BigTuna Signed 1

Soooo good. I’m not even mad about the Jan/Jim hookup, because I can absolutely picture young hot farmer Jim being sucked in by her older feminine wiles and it like, somehow, makes him kind of hotter? I don’t know, it makes me think of that Garth Brooks song about how she had a need to feel the thunder.

Anyway this was perfect and so are you, and take all the time you need bb we will be here!

Author's Response: OMG. I love that I spent days trying to figure out how I would be able to defend the Jan thing and why it works in this story and you're just like, "hey, remember that one Garth Brooks song?" and you 100% nailed it. That's exactly it, and it's going to be the reasoning I use if anyone tries to give me grief over it, lol. I'm so glad you're still enjoying this story! :)

Catching up and just have to leave a review that says I LOVE the way Jim handled that intrusive lady! People absolutely do want to touch kids or stomachs and it’s just so weird. I am so happy to see that addresses and shut down! Great job!

Author's Response: Thank you. Papa Bear Jim is fun to bring out from time to time.

These are so cute! I love the detailing of daily life. And I love the inclusion of a rabbit! That’s a pet I feel like I don’t often see in stories. If these are inspired by real life, you sound like a great dad. Can’t wait to read more!

Author's Response: Aww thanks BT. Yes they are inspired by real life. I was going a little stir crazy back then so it was fun to create something kind of silly. I'm glad you're enjoying this.

...does that sinus tapping thing work? Am I really about to take some advice from Dwight?

That aside, I just really love seeing slices of life for my favorite couple. Even when it’s split up, like just seeing Jim’s day through the status updates and seeing more of Pam as she navigates unfamiliar terrain. Her self evaluation made me proud of her! I might steal that for use in my own life. And you wrote Dwight really well! I always love when he says something and it takes them a minute before they go “oh, that’s actually pretty helpful!” Great work as always. Now I’m off to read more of another story written by you!

Author's Response:

Medically speaking, I honestly have no idea if sinus tapping like that works. However I feel it's got that feeling of folksy wisdom along with a hint of alternative medicine that would appeal to Dwight. And hey if it works for you, feel free. Same goes for the self evaluation. Glad you liked how I wrote Dwight too. It's also fun to show him as more than just a punching bag for Jim and Pam's pranks. He does care about people in his own Dwight-ish way.

Glad you liked the rest of the chapter. It's fun to write Pam as still learning and growing. Thanks for the review. Hope you enjoy whatever other story you're off too. I completed and created several during your sabatical.

This. Is. Adorable. For a minute I was like “why is Helene being so nice?” And then I remembered that the Helene that doesn’t like Jim is in “Silver Wings” and not this story! I love that Jim got serious about something that really is important to Pam and that we got to see a slice of something he loves equally as much. I see some parallels between Jim and Superman 😉 great work as always!

Author's Response: Thank you. Kinda fun that I could confuse you like that. It was fun to write Jim fixing his gaff with the Finer Things Club, and what better way to do that than with a comic book? Jim and Superman are both arc-type characters so yeah, of course there would be parallels between them. Thanks for adding in your own literary contributions to this review and MTT.

Finally got caught up! So sorry to have been late to the game with finishing this one. It was just so cute! I say this in every review I leave on slice of life type stories, but I really do love slice of life type stories! The little moments that happen off camera that we don’t get to see. And you write them so well! I always love reading your work, warrior. Now off to catch up on Silver Wings!

Author's Response: I always love getting reviews from you BT. Thank you so much. I'm very glad you liked this. I had a lot of fun bringing it together so I'm glad people enjoyed reading it too.

This is just so lovely. A perfect reimagining of season 3, with fancy new Beesly and the hesitation and fear of jumping back in and them finding their way back to other with out the horrible angst of Jim and Karen. Just the right amount of angst. I love the metaphors—so beautifully written! All in all this was just wonderful. Brb, off to binge everything you’ve written now!

Author's Response: Oh BT, thank you! Way to make my day. I’m glad you didn’t get too tired of all the metaphors - I was worried they were wearing a little (or a lot) thin by the end of this.

If you’re off to read the rest, start with the earlier ones. I feel like I peaked early and my oldest stuff may just be my favorite stuff...

Just binged this whole story and have to say I love it so much. It is exceptionally written, all the longing and quiet (and sometimes not as quiet) angst as a proper Regency story. You’ve given all the characters roles that suit them so well, and I have enjoyed so much seeing how each of them slot in. I can’t wait to read more!

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for your review! It means a lot to me and I'm glad you like this story.

Aw! I’m so exited for their date! Can’t wait to read what happens! And good for Jim for calling them out, and I love the way you wrote David!

Author's Response:

AAH! Thank you! (didnt realize i got another review lol goes to show how observant i am!) Thanks, I figured David has gotten closer with Jim since working for corporate, and probably knows what happened. On top of that, since Karen IS his executive assistant, may have seen her change since the divorce.

Sweet Anna and her JTT reference, the looks into the future and how well you wrote the scene with future Jim, it was all so lovely. It gave me all the best warm Christmas feelings. Going on my re-read list for sure!

I love this so much. High school and college aged AUs are my jam (lol) and you write young Pam so well! She really reads like a 16 year old and I totally identify with her struggles. I’m so interested to see more of James and to see how Roy plays into it! Great work!

Ugh all the red flags already, like how Pam’s art remind Roy of lame cartoons. Good for her for drawing him as a “lame cartoon” though! You do such a good job conveying the high school experience. I’m sure there will be more angst (there was plenty in my high school days) but I can’t wait to read!

I relate to this so much.
