Summary: Feature

Beth the waitress returns!

A series of stand alone, slice of life, one-shots in Pam and Jim's life, all tied together with the thread that runs through them; they all end with dinner at Christopher's, where (in my headcanon) they had their first date.

The first and the last chapter NOW COMPLETE work in tandem, but everything in between is its own story if you want to pop in for one whose title strikes your fancy.

These last two chapters are incredibly emotional for entirely different reasons and you handle that range of emotions so well.

There is so much angst in this part of their story but that’s what makes it richer and more realistic. You do such a great job at capturing her feelings of frustration and doubts and uncertainty. Wonderful updates!

Author's Response:

Many Thanks. I used to be nervous about writing anything angsty. It is a boost of confidence to hear it comes across when I do. I agree it keeps it real to write this part of the story as well.

Thanks again. NExt one wraps it all up!

(Sorry I’m just getting to review this)

What a sweet ending to this story and I love the twist. Such a cute evolution of their story from first date to the next generation of first date.

Also, I would like to thank you for the visual of Jim in a towel and then it dropping. It was something I didn’t know I needed.

Great job with this story! And congratulations on another fantastic accomplishment. :)

Congratulations on your first story. Writing can be an absolutely terrifying endeavor but thankfully this is a very friendly place and everyone is tremendously encouraging.

This is such an interesting but realistic take! I love the idea of children seeing their parents on tv and especially through the eyes of an adult. Great start!

Author's Response:

Thank you!  Always nerve-wracking writing for a new fandom, especially one as established as this. Glad you enjoyed it. :)

This is really well done, Max! You have a real handle on all the little underlying issues they were having in season 9 and the pain Jim felt at seeing the lid in the trash was palpable.

"There was nothing left for him at Dunder Mifflin, aside from her. But they were married, had a family. He no longer needed to stay in a dead-end job just to be near her." - I think this is a very real thing that gets glossed over often. He *only* stayed at that job for her, and he was capable of so much more.

"Despite all her growth since he’d met her, she still had trouble looking at change as a positive thing." - This. I think seeing how big his 'little startup' was spooked her and she just wanted to keep the status quo after that first visit.

"How it seemed like everything they’d built up for themselves was crumbling as he borrowed bricks from the bedrock to build something she had no part in." - perfectly said.

"Last night, over dinner, the words finally spilled out, expelling from her body, dropping onto the pristine white table cloth like oil stains that might never come out." - Lovely!

Author's Response:

There is nothing I enjoy more in a review that hearing what stood out to the reader so you can imagine I am so touched by this review. And coming from you even more so since I am in awe by your writing and insights...even your review is a treasure to read.

Thank you also for the words of the encouragement as this story sparked - it really did give me the courage to go for it.

I am really glad I ran with this and that you are in agreement there was so much more to the story that wasn't addressed.

Thanks again for it all.

This is such an insightful take of all of the complicated and nuanced emotions both of them were feeling at that time. Marriage is work, even the best of marriages, and I think you perfectly captured that here. I really loved the journal entry too! Fabulous job.

Author's Response:

I struggled through that journal entry, searching for Pam's voice and what she might be thinking back on. I'm so pleased you mentioned it. I feel like maybe I got close.

Writing this story had me rewatching my wedding video and thinking back on everything from then until now. We agree on that - marriage only works when you work at it. But the rewards are so worth it.

Thanks again for reading and sharing what you thought. Always a thrill to get reviews.

Thanks so much. This one was straight out of my heart...I've very much been like Pam lately. However I will share the Return to Schrute Farms fic notecard has been sitting around for quite some time...along with bits of the conversation in that part. But it was the sentimental part I felt really rounded this one out.

Love that you picked out the gold mention - it wouldn't be a M. Abbott original without a little flash of metallic.

Why in the world would anyone kick you off the site for this? It was adorable. I loved getting a little insight into Penny’s love life and I think it is totally appropriate that she was involved with a rock star.

The twist at the end with David Wallace was perfectly done and you set it up so well. This was super cute, Max!

Author's Response:

Aww well thanks - tongue and cheek comment but I guess it was the far-fetched ending - but now that I think about it much more far-fetched things happened on the show, but also since it was was so random.

But I'm glad you enjoyed it. Penny's delusional rock star boyfriend was the plot device to get her to where she might cross paths with DW or cross paths with someone who might cross paths - ala his kid's drum teacher. Glad you liked the set up and the glimpse into Penny.

This is such an interesting premise for season 3 and I love the dreams. I’ve always appreciated the use of dreams as literary device to examine fears and for foreshadowing and I love your use of them here.

“But mostly it hadn’t cleansed him of the taste of her lips, lips that he should never have sampled because as they say, a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

The harm of that small taste was like a poison that entered his body and set up camp, refusing to leave even so many months later.” Love this whole section but imagery is fantastic.

I’m looking forward to see where you take this story!

Author's Response:

Yes, this will be a bit different. You'll still recognize some tropes and the characters will hopefully still feel true but this story is not what what we saw on the show.

As I mentioned I have always been fascinated by dreams and was inspired by the song lyrics but the use of dreams to really explore ideas and feelings is open and freeing (am I making sense?).

You were not the only one who pointed out that line - and yeah it was one of my favorites too.

I'm excited you'll be along on the journey  - your thoughts always mean a lot to me.

I'm slowly but surely working through your updates. ;)

"For her it was the start of something, for him it was just a way to numb him from everything he’d learned that day.

He’d gone long enough without a romantic connection both mentally and physically and while she’d never be Pam, she could be just the thing to help him rebound. He knew he could continue to let her be his antiseptic, let her temporarily block the pain for as long as they were both employed in the same town but did he want to be that guy? A who made promises with his body he had no intention of keeping." - This is exactly how I believe he saw the entire origin of their relationship but wonderfully articulated here. She was a distraction that turned into a relationship out of sheer apathy. And while his integrity wanted to try and make it more because he knew his feelings didn't match hers, the truth was, as you postulated, it was never more than the shallowness of its beginnings.

I, too, love writing Jim drunk and I love how you wrote him here. He's adorable. And oh what a way to end it. You can almost hear Pam's mind racing with the misunderstood information.

Great chapter!

Author's Response:

So great to get your reviews and know you are with me on the Karen/Jim thing. Not the first time (Katy) he went for something he really didn't want, felt obligated to give it a go, and was basically going through motions.

The drunk part was really fun - glad you enjoyed.

This is great how you are filling in the back story to the Jan conversation, the Pam phone call. It's so well done.

Okay, so I'm loving this Matthew guy. Besides the obvious weirdness of the whole Brian storyline on the show, I've always thought they would be friends with these people that they worked with for years behind the cameras. They had to have. And this original character is great.

I also really like how you're are making Josh out to be a real villain!

Author's Response:

I had fun expanding on the characters - and giving Josh a more villianous streak.

This order of this story was what made it tricky but I always enjoy episodes of shows where we start in the future and then go back to see how we got there so I gave it a shot - a lot harder than I thought.

Thanks for reading and reviewing - I do really appreciate it.

I’m FINALLY getting caught up with everything and this story was one of the first. So sorry!

Also, I’m not sure how much advice I give beyond “hey that sounds great!” but I’ll take it!

So I think Michael is actually a pretty tricky character to write and you seem to do such a great job at nailing his voice. This whole opening scene is no exception and I can absolutely see him doing all these things.

I love that you mentioned Faulkner and using it to insult Roy is just an added bonus.

I also think it is quite clever how you are setting this up. It’s very believable, which I feel was not easy to accomplish. Can’t wait to keep reading!

Author's Response:

Never underestimate what a little support can do. Even just being able to bounce ideas off my friends and having them to be excited for me is a big boost.

Thanks for the vote of confidence with my Michael writing. There will be a lot of him in this story and getting him right is crucial. Don't know what it says that I can get in his head so well, but I'll take it.

Love to stick it to that ignorant buffoon.

I’m so intrigued at how they are going to get out of this! It was such a well written chapter that the end snuck up on me.

Excellent use of Gaussian, by the way.

The entire sequence of them traveling was so well done and the imagery so vivid that I could see everything so clearly in my mind. Great chapter!

Author's Response:

You know how certain scenes come to you - and are written before everything else...and the everything else gets filled in around it? That was the time traveling sequence so I'm tickled you noticed it and could see it.

Time travel does create a lot of limitations but half the fun here is getting them out of it (the other half is the hard part).

Thank you again for such high praise - really does mean so much.
