Bio:

Wife, mother (of children, not dragons, generally). Hopeless romantic, massive JAM shipper.

Also present on FanFiction.Net under the same name, where I wrote a fair number of stories for Bones, which for over ten years was the TV love of my life. Until now.

I’m still fairly new to The (US) Office, but as a Brit, I was really into the UK version and wasn’t too sure about this upstart US reboot, even with Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant’s input. I’d seen a few episodes over the years, knew vaguely about the Jim/Pam storyline and that there was chemistry, but not really clicked on how good it was, and as for the rest, the little I’d seen? Well, Craig Robinson is Doug Judy in B99 to me, Rashida Jones - Ann Perkins in Parks and Rec; and I didn’t even know that Ellie Kemper and Ed Helms had been in it for several seasons, let alone James Spader and CATHERINE TATE?!  Then I binge-watched it all the way through early in UK lockdown in Spring  2020 and suddenly it all clicked, and I fell hard for JAM. Really hard.

I’ve now watched some episodes several times, but I’m following via the Office Ladies podcast, so I’m really getting into the detail of the show itself as well as the love story.

In real life I have my own Jim (although his name isn’t Jim and he doesn’t work in paper, but he is lovely), two teenagers, a naughty Beagle and a cheeky Jack Russell. I work in the IT Industry.

You nailed this AGAIN. This was PERFECT! It is literally like watching an episode in my head. Are you sure you're not Mindy Kaling?

Author's Response: Thank you so much! That is incredibly kind of you to say haha, I think that might be the best compliment. Although I'm not sure I could write Michael for a sustained period of time lol, some of the things he comes out with on the show I don't think would even occur to me...

Yep. Ryan is a douche. And you've captured him accurately. He remains a douche after your writing. :D

Awwwww, you wrote Toby so well too. He is sweet and quite awkward and I could imagine those thoughts going through his head like that.

I was filled with trepidation and excitement that this chapter was coming (and figured would be the last.) I think in some respects Jim might have been one of the hardest to write because he is so "normal"? I think you got him, got them so well. You captured Jim and Pam's vulnerabilities and that X-factor that makes us love them together so much. Beautifully done. I laughed at your Stanley comment, too.

Looking forward to the Jim equivalent next! Are you going to include Katy and Karen (and I'm curious, much as I hated her, about Cathy, too!)

Author's Response:

Thank you so much! Yeah, I did actually find Jim's the hardest to write - also because he knows Pam so well that I had to try to think of some genuinely insightful things about her (unlike with some of the other characters, lol). Although my inspiration for writing this whole thing did come from their exchange in season 9 about whether there was anything they didn't know about each other any more.

I am definitely planning to do Katy and Karen! I don't know about Cathy, though. Partially because I'm not sure they fleshed her character out beyond 'has the hots for Jim' enough for me to find a lot to write about...and I also think there are other female characters that find Jim attractive that might be more fun to write. But I'll have a think!

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave feedback on this - it's been great to read, and I've really appreciated it! :)

Summary: Feature

Beth the waitress returns!

A series of stand alone, slice of life, one-shots in Pam and Jim's life, all tied together with the thread that runs through them; they all end with dinner at Christopher's, where (in my headcanon) they had their first date.

The first and the last chapter NOW COMPLETE work in tandem, but everything in between is its own story if you want to pop in for one whose title strikes your fancy.

GREAT chapter, Max!

I remember the days of morning sickness, fun, fun, fun. As ever, nailed it. This was so entertaining, and look at you with the hint of the steam - I'm shocked, SHOCKED I tell you! ;)

Such a great story and you know that Beth needs another follow-up story when this is done!

Author's Response:

Hey lady.

I completely space on responding to this set of reviews.

SO glad you liked it - yeah morning sickness not fun- but at least with Jim they can be funny.

The remedy they discovered was also fun especially after their dry spell - glad you like my steam puffs.

Thanks lady for always hitting me up with a review. Glad you are enjoying Beth. PS I am loaning her out for use in other fics...

Oh, I enjoyed this!

I liked what you did with Beth, Phyllis and Bob (I have to stop myself typing that as Bob Vance, Vance Refrigeration.)

I think you captured Jim's insecurities about Pam's friendship with Alex perfectly. And I think Jim would be right to be nervous, he recognises Alex's interest and you captured that beautifully.

There is a lot to love about this chapter, but what I loved most is what you did with them to get rid of the clown painting is totally in character, feels like it would have been canon and even something that might have been in a deleted scene from that episode (if The Office was on HBO, obviously.)

Author's Response:

I'm so glad you did. In case you didn't know that clown shows up again in garage sale episode so there is confirmation it came down. And I love to make up the back stories to those little throwaway things others may not even really think about. It was just a matter of figuring out how to get it down and as the idea came so did the idea to make it a stand-in for some unspoken thing that was still out there following him overhearing Alex.

Phyllis and Bob Vance, Vance Refr. - they are the other clowns the title refers to, and are just a hoot to write. But her heart is just so big too.

Thanks for all your great reviews always and your support.

“As the sun painted the sky with metallic specs of copper and fire and cast its radiance over the landscape in the distance, he felt something shift within him. He knew before then he was in love but it was in that moment that he could taste eternity with her, know their souls would be tied to each other forevermore.”

Absolutely beautiful, Max. I loved that description but I also love how you filled in the blanks of post- that non-proposal. Absolutely fits with canon and it feels so natural. Poor Beth though, she must have been really thrown!

Author's Response:

You know the reference that was from - and I almost thought I wouldn't be able to describe it differently than I had before - especially within this story, which I felt was a little more lighthearted than the original. I'm really pleased you felt it too.

Yeah, we knew they must have discussed waiting and I had to imagine not only that but Pam must have just about figured it out, that he had been on the verge of asking. But I also felt after that she would be expecting it even more which would lesson the magic and element of surprise. Hard as it might of been for her to tell him to wait - I figured she might.

I really wanted to share the few other ways I thought were fun, if a bit corny, but isn't that Jim? But because this is a canon-complaint story I had to present them as more ways he didn't get to propose.

Poor Beth, I think more than it being about the win she was excited to see her favorite couple get engaged in her presence and as we know now she won't.

Thanks for your review - always makes my day...and your story recommendation  - I enjoyed that one too and felt very in tune with that writer.

Oh Max, oh my heart! That was beautiful, but what I really loved about this was the little details you put in, like tiny flecks of paint building into a picture where one can see it all. And it didn't need explicit smut (not that I'm not partial to a little of that, it has its place),but that second section was some of the most erotic writing I have read in a while. Superb work.

Author's Response:

You are too kind and I am so thrilled you enjoyed this. I had been really nervous about writing about their "first time" but knew somehow it had to be in my narrative somehow. I'm so glad you appreciated how I depicted it and the details that made it even more magical experience for them.

I'm so glad to have you reading and reviewing - it's just like sharing my vision with a good friend.

Cheers!

Ooooh this is nice, Max! Just woke up and this is the first thing I read today, something very wholesome but also one can sense the romance building quietly in the background. Will patiently wait for what’s next!

Author's Response:

Thank you grc. A little fluffy fun for Valentine's but do remember it's Pam and Jim and they work at Dundler Mifflin Scranton so anything goes before they get to Christopher's at night for their dates.

Who knows what could happen and since I'm not sure myself this will be fun.

Thanks for reading and reviewing - it's a treat to get them, better than Valentine's chocolate.

Yep, this is bang on. The walls are going to crumble soon... one can tell that Karen kept telling herself the same thing over and over in the hope it would solidify. It didn't, and that's visible even the night before they had their corporate interviews.

Author's Response:

Thank you for your comment :)

Yeah, I am sure there was lot of assurance she gave herself like a mantra to cope with the storm happening right in front of her. It's interesting how we don't even realize other's needs in our own need to cling with them.

Reviewer: grc73 Signed 1

I love seeing this from the Karen perspective. As viewers and (for the most part) JAM shippers, we had a 'whole lens' view of what was going on with a vested interest in a particular outcome. Showing this from Karen's viewpoint, we get this *other* perspective from someone stumbling into their world and lives seeing it as someone with a different interest. That is bought into sharp relief in this chapter - Karen questioning Pam's motives, their history. This is just so excellent.

Author's Response: Thank you for saying that. I am so glad you liked my take on Karen's point of view. Yes, as someone rooting for Jam , I never cared for how Karen felt and had to go through before these two got together. I think, a part of me, sort of starting sympathizing with her during writing my first story and here is what I got. You are really kind and your feedback has been wonderful. Hope you likes the last one too :)

I think this is really good and I like the humanisation of Karen here. I am a huge JAM shipper but I always had sympathy for Karen, she was really a defensive instrument for Jim to protect himself from his feelings. That never felt fair and she deserved better (I’m glad she had happy off-screen happy-ever-after with Dan the Dermatologist and that we got to see a little of that later on. Looking forward to reading more.

Author's Response:

Aww I know. I was glad too that she got her happy ending, no hard feelings right.

I am so glad you liked my take on Karen. I never meant to make it sound like I am siding with her but to reflect on what happened to her while we were and still rooting for our favorite pair :)
