Super late to this party...

I’ve loved The Office for a few years now & have dabbled in fic for other fandoms. Deep in another rewatch, I thought there’s got to be some amazing fic out there for arguably one of the greatest shows of all time & here I am - potentially attempting to devour the MTT archive in its entirety?

If I manage to stop reading for long enough, I may attempt to add a few ideas of my own. Time will tell.

Edit May 19: Understandably, I've fallen head over heels with this archive and all that it offers. I've started a Fic Rec Friday thread on Twitter, where I enthuse about the many stories that have brought me joy. So, I'm just putting it out there if you'd like to stop by and have a look. I'm also super open if you have any suggestions that you think should be added/are must reads...

Welcome to MTT! I’ve been slow to jump onboard with this fic - mostly because I’m a little scared of anything set in Season 9. I have such a love/hate dynamic with Season 9... I love that it’s so very real and that’s what a marriage is sometimes, but also all the angst drains my soul...

Your writing is really lovely. I think you’re doing characters like Nellie, Erin and Pete a lot of justice with this story.
There’s a nice blend of humor sprinkled throughout too. “ Andy proceeds to make it weird.” This line made me chuckle.
I’m interested to see how you really diverge things from canon.

Author's Response:

Glad you're enjoying it so far!

Trust me, with the canon S9, I get it.  There's some plots and a lot of jokes I felt like they did really well, but wow is it a tough watch.  I myself love the Halpert conflict *in concept*, because I like that they're not painted as this amazing fantasy love story, it's a real relationship.  However, like I've mentioned, their lack of communication is what annoys me.  It felt like such a regression from how they were the previous 5 seasons; just because they have trouble communicating doesn't mean they wouldn't make an attempt.  And yeah, there will be conflict in this, but nothing that's unresolved.

I actually really like writing those three in particular a lot.  Erin is one of my favorites and I like both Nellie and Pete, I just didn't think the show knew what to do with them.  I want to do more with Clark, but there aren't a lot of plots dedicated to him yet, though I know that'll change with "The Whale".  The biggest canon divergence will begin in "Lice".

And I'm really glad you like my writing style!  I'm very not used to prose so this proved to be a bit of a challenge.

Thanks for the welcome, and the review!

I really like this idea of Karen being super pragmatic & enjoying Christmas, but not really being swept away by the magic of it all.
Oh. The connection with what Karen has said to Pam and with Jim rejecting her gift. Oof. That hurts. Poor Pam.

“She placed them around the teapot like moons around a planet” This is such a beautiful image. It’s so, so heartbreaking that it all loses meaning without Jim.

“She’d burn it later.” Damn.

I don’t even have the words to describe how haunting it is for Pam to consider breaking the teapot. I love the comparison to an alcoholic returning to the bottle and I can understand why she feels that breaking it is the right thing to do. Even so, it hurts. It hurts so bad.
Much like Pam, I love that teapot and everything it stands for.

Oh boy. Talk about a misunderstanding. Karen has put this whole taking gifts back thing into her head and now Jim has shown up asking for a gift and she assumes the worst.
She’s so brave. I love that she gives him such a strong no.

‘It means everything,’ YES. So good.
Pam telling him he can’t. Oh my god. So brave.

‘Well… I’m trying to turn ‘can’t’ into ‘can’, I guess,’ Is this my new favorite line of anything ever? I think so.

I’m so, so glad the teapot remains intact!

Author's Response:

Oh, Jenna, thank you so much for such an amazing review! I'm glad you liked the story, and I truly appreciate your feedback. I have the same feelings for the teapot as you, and breaking it would be... too much.

I'm a weak woman, I guess :)

Oh, this is such a fun set up! I can’t say I’ve ever read anything like it before, I love a good twist.
You had me a little worried in the first part with Katy making the briefest of cameos, but then the focus shifted to Steve and now I’m so very excited to see where you go with this - especially so early on in canon. A really unique premise...

Author's Response: Thank you! Katy will reappear, if only because this is an S1 fic and so we will touch on Hot Girl, but this is not a Katy-centric fic I assure you. I hope you enjoy!

“Pam was game for a prank, and smart, and funny, and…where was he going with this?” Oh Jim. This is pretty perfect for early on Jim, just smitten (without too much of the angst dragging him down).
This is such great build up...

Author's Response: Thank you! I hope the payoff is also pleasing!

Pam realizing she needed to turn on the camera without additional prompting was so very lovely. Steve was great - it’s really fun to see it all play out this way, with Jim as almost active participant.

Author's Response: Thank you! And thanks for the feedback on Steve--since he's 90% OC (only shows up in this one scene in the original), I'm worried about him fitting in...

Oh Michael. Not recognizing someone he’s done a play with has to make his list of lows.

“his type was very specifically one person.” This a great line. So very true when it comes to Jim (I’m overlooking the fact he actually dated Katy in canon because nope, this is a better narrative).

Aww, well that’s the sweetest twist ever! I am so here for Jim setting up Katy and Steve.

Author's Response:

It just still felt pretty Michael for me to have him forget her because, well, he didn't really pay attention to her as a person in the show, so...

And thank you! I'm always glad to provide heartwarming moments that open the way for more JAM...

Oh you’re setting up for such a lovely payoff when this little Katy misunderstanding is all cleared up! Jim is at his supportive friend best here. It’s always incredibly gratifying to see Pam call things off with Roy and this is no exception.

Author's Response: Thank you! I hope you enjoy the next chapter, and agree that the payoff is worth it!

This is a wonderful repurposing of it’s a date. I love the moment of clarification & Pam’s face dropping only to fix it so very quickly - thank goodness!

The imagery of Jim six inches off the ground is so very lovely. It made me smile.

“And here I thought I was being incredibly obvious about my crush on my hot new coworker.” Oh, this exchange is just delightful.

Pam continuing the bit with Steve is just perfect.
Nice way to tie it all together at the end too!

Author's Response: Thank you so much, especially for noticing the circular bits of the fic (I love bringing things back around).

“Their lives were so entangled and intertwined, that it was difficult to decipher what was love and what was routine and comfort.” This. Yes. This cuts right at the heart of Pam and Roy...

Oh, it’s such a sad comparison to have Mark immediately mute the game and give his full attention to Jim. Lovely for Jim, but so very sad for Pam.

Welcome back! I’m looking forward to seeing where you go with this.

I really liked your Roy during the break up. He felt about the right amount of angry coupled with actually caring about Pam. I like when his character is written with a little more depth than just villain/asshole.

“Hearing another girl call him by his last name so playfully again was slightly jarring.” Ugh. I imagine so. Jarring is a nice description of it.

Author's Response: Yeah, Roy has always been a complicated character for me. I mean, yeah, he sucks. But there has to be a reason Pam was with him so long. I don’t imagine she would have called everything off and have it be easy for either of them. Thanks for your review! :)

“the rest of the day continued to make her slowly shrink into the sweater her mom had made her” This is such a great way of describing how Pam would be feeling during The Merger.

Oh. Wow. Okay. I can’t believe you’re giving me Pride & Prejudice feels on top of JAM feels. All. The. Feels. I love it so much.

Author's Response: Jim Halpert and Mr. Darcy are definitely on my list when it comes to the fictional character “Who Would You Do”? So how could I not put them in a chapter together?! ;) Thank you!

“Yeah, he really knows his way around a pair of beets.” This was such a fun exchange!

After the angsty build up, this fluff is super sweet. I love that he came back to kiss her. What a lovely way to end this!

Author's Response: Thank you for reading and reviewing!! I’m glad you liked the ending. :)

Summary:

Two months after her husband dies, Pam receives a gift from him that helps her in more ways than she could ever imagine. Now it’s four years later and she’s finally ready to start dating again, but just like everything else in her life, it gets a little messy.

AU based off of The Guardian by Nicholas Sparks. If you’ve read the book, this plotline will be pretty similar while still incorporating characters/references/small plotlines of The Office as well as possibly my own little twists.

I’m a little scared to read this because anything Nicholas Sparks is guaranteed to make me sob, but I am ready to be hurt again.

Mark?! Well, that’s already a twist.

Okay, this is sad as all hell, but I kind of love that it’s Christmas? This feels a little like a Hallmark movie and I love it.
The puppy is only increasing the Christmas movie vibe and I am so, so here for it.

Author's Response: RIP Mark. It was going to be Danny, but he will be involved in another way. But I needed Jam to be endgame, so I couldn't have Jim be the one she was married to, for obvious reasons. And yess, this beginning is definitely hallmark-esque. Unfortunately it doesn't stay that way come next chapter, but for now we can stay in our little Christmas bubble.

Back into the dating pool with Toby. Oof. “Turns out, one date with Toby was one too many for her.” Oh this cracked me up a whole lot. Toby’s not so bad, but after a beloved husband, dating him would not feel like a step up.

Wow. What a dating history - Alan, Brian, Roy. I like how you’re blending canon elements with this world. It’s a little the same, but totally different all at once.

“Mark introduced Pam to his best friend Jim, Jim’s brother Danny, and Danny’s wife Karen.” Oh. Oh. Okay. I wondered how/where Jim would fit in! Danny & Karen is a bonus.

“Jim is… well… he isn’t very subtle about his feelings towards her” This feels a lot like canon - poor Jim in the friend zone...

I love Jim and Danny as brothers! And aunt Jo! This is making me wish I’d read the book... partly because I’m dying to know what’s coming!

Jim trying to get information from his brother is SO cute.
“You gotta take a chance on something, sometime, Jim” Yes please.

““To be honest, I was a little worried about you the whole time. I thought you were going to strain your neck with how far you were craning it in order to listen in.” Oh Aly, this is perfect. So, so fun. I love Pam and Jo’s dynamic in this.

Aly! Way to leave us on a cliffhanger!
I can’t make sense of Roy here, I have no idea if he’s genuine or not. He really seems to be a bit of a mystery... Pam’s mixed feelings aren’t helping.
I feel for Jim though! I hope he finds some courage!

I’m with Jim - Roy is giving me a bad feeling too, & it’s not just because he’s dating Pam (although, maybe it mostly is...)

“Cobra is a guy with leather jackets who rides motorcycles and occasionally breaks the law. Ryan is a guy who works in an office and still lives with his mom.” This had me cackling. How perfect.

“But if I were you, I’d make it a good one, and I wouldn’t waste too much time coming up with it” This is the most brotherly advice ever - just make it good & make it quick, with no actual ideas. Oh boy...

This version of Roy gives off such a weird vibe. I have no clue what his deal is yet, but I know I don’t like it... Jim’s conversation with Daryl was all sorts of ominous too.
Dwight is a delight! Of course it needs to be perfectly centered.
For a second there you had me going & I thought Jim had really taken Kelly on a date...

Ooooh, finally some Roy backstory. That’s not at all what I expected his motivation to be... It garners some sympathy, but at the same time, he’s still giving off a super weird/creepy vibe so I can’t feel all that sorry for him...

“I won’t stop thinking of you.” There’s that creepy vibe again.

“It was gradual, like a sunrise, growing warmer and brighter as the minutes passed, and the next thing he knew it was morning and everything felt brand new.” This line is absolute perfection. I love it so much.

Big yes to those thoughts about starting to see Jim in more of a relationship sort of light!
