New categories taking effect today
We will be retagging stories today using the new, simpler category system seen at the bottom of this page.

If you re-cat your own story before we get to it, make sure that you select both a primary category (Jim and Pam, or Other) AND a subcategory, so that both are visible on your story's description page. Keep this in mind for all new submissions as well.

We're taking these steps to simplify categorization, and to make it easier for you to find the fics you want to read. We hope it's helpful in both ways.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me through my profile page, or use the Contact Us link above.

ETA: Retagging is complete. Please check your stories to ensure they are tagged as you would tag them yourself. Please note that the definition given for Alternate Universe has changed. The biggest grey area as far as tagging goes involves the ensemble pieces. Any ensemble piece with significant Jim-Pam interaction has been tagged "Jim and Pam" so that readers looking for that can find it easily. If you would prefer that your ensemble piece were categorized as "Other", please feel free to do so.

Great job! This will make it easy to navigate.

I have a question, is adding them to the upper level cat and the subcat, actually adding them to the archive twice? I only ask cause the original submission rules with the software suggest against doing that. Oh and freaking awesome job guys!
- sicokitty on July 14, 2006 08:36 pm
actually i don't think it really matters. i think it messes up the story counts a little, but i much presef the organisation of seeing them on the main cat page and then narrowing it down when selecting a sub cat.

If you go to admin, then categories, you can reset the story count - I did that when i was finished.
- nomadshan on July 14, 2006 08:40 pm
ohh nice. i wondered what that did. i just moved the categories up to the side bar, so they're more accesible.

So here's why I asked everyone to cat + sub-cat their stories: I made test story, and clicked on Jim and Pam, but instead of selecting that cat, I then selected the sub-cat Future. I was curious to see if the story would come up in a search for Jim and Pam stories, and it did not, even though it was tagged in a sub-cat of J+P. Make sense? If we do it this way, we should alter the story submission guidelines, so folks don't feel they're being told two different things.

Oh yeah, I love having the cats in the sidebar!
- nomadshan on July 14, 2006 08:49 pm
ooh ok, i didn't realise that it did that. makes perfect sense. but it looks much better either way.

Hello. I have a comment about the star rating system. How the hell does that work? Why can't we see more than a certain number of stars? If a story has one rating and it's 10 stars, shouldn't 10 show up? And also, I love the new organization and drop down menus, but is it even possible to add a drop down to sort it by star rating? So that I can have my list in order of highest rated to lowest rated?
- Pixel on July 15, 2006 12:45 am
I think you get half as many stars for the number (6 = 3 stars, 9 = 4.5 stars, etc).
- nomadshan on July 15, 2006 01:11 am
Oh, wow. I got a lot of stars. Here I was thinking that people were saying nice things, and then giving me only 5 stars. I'm over being sad now!
- Pixel on July 15, 2006 01:20 am
it's rate 1-10, but it translates to a graphical 5 star rating, so that there is room for half star calculations as well. so a 5 would be 2 and a half stars. maybe i can find a way to change it from the numbering to actually saying 2 1/2 Stars.
- sicokitty on July 15, 2006 01:22 am
i actually thought there was a highest rated area in the tens, but there isn't. i'm sure there is probably an addon that can make it do that though. i really need to get on to my host though, because i don't have direct access to the database tables to be able to edit the software.
- sicokitty on July 15, 2006 01:24 am
No biggie. Nobody else has asked, so apparently I'm the only one who didn't know how it worked. I'm fine with it. And I guess I have to wade through everything anyway in order to co-admin, so I don't need the list to be in order of star-rating.
- Pixel on July 15, 2006 01:35 am
Pixel, I found out that the sort by highest rating is on the newest build- they don't have a stable release yet, but hopefully it shouldn't be too far off.

It looks good, guys!
