Co Admins
First of all- make sure you read the previous news item!

Second! I've added in all the people who offered to co admin as follows-

Morning Angel
Pixel
Shannanagin

You guys will be overseeing four categories, Canon, Prequel, Future and General.

Nomadshan
Swestworld
xoxoxo

You guys will be overseeing four categories also, Missing Moments, Post Episode, AU, and Other Pairings.

I will leave it up to you guys to come to a conclusion how you want attack the whole quality control issue, but I think the best way might just be to rely on the ratings from yourselves, and act accordingly.

Our first challenge was issued, and we already have two fantastic responses aleady, so check them out!!

I created a 'Violence/Injury' warning partially for that reason. Is a warning enough?
- nomadshan on July 12, 2006 06:31 pm
In any case, I think we should have a clause in the guidelines that requires a Mature rating for any story with violence or injury, 'cause even if it's Pam nursing Jim's busted lip (Basketball), the mention of blood might squick someone out.
- nomadshan on July 12, 2006 07:00 pm
swetsworld, I'm totally with you. Honestly, I think this is a topic that rarely works in fanfic, but I don't think excluding it completely is necessarily something we want to do, because someone might succeed in tackling it in sensible and sensitive manner. I think a Violence/Injury warning is a good idea, nomadshan.
- Morning Angel on July 12, 2006 07:30 pm
Yes, I guess that's fine. I just have a visceral reaction when I see that stuff, so don't ask me to admin on that section! I know it's not fair to exclude stuff, and the story that prompted my suggestion is actually a well written story. I don't mean to be a rule setter or anything - really I swear I don't. I was just reacting to stuff that made me feel really icky!
- Pixel on July 12, 2006 08:28 pm
Oh, thank you Pixel for bringing something up about violent abusive Roy. It makes me feel icky too. I think my biggest problem is when characters are completely out of character and abusive Roy seems out of character to me. But maybe that's just a personal preference.
- shannanagin on July 12, 2006 09:26 pm
But the Violence/Injury warning is a good idea.
- shannanagin on July 12, 2006 09:27 pm
wow there was an *explosion*[/john] of members/fics while i was asleep! yay.

i kind of agree with the violence thing, i often find it hard to get through a fic if they've gone doen the roy is violent road. but is suppose if it's well written, excluding it would be like excluding slash from other pairings. maybe we could poll it, because everyone might feel the same way.

also, with the non jim/pam canon pairings, i kind of imagined they would go in the other pairings category, or we could create them their own sub categories under general. cause they're not quite general, but not quite bizarro other pairings, and i don't know if they should be put in the main group of categories we've got set up for jim and pam fic.
- sicokitty on July 12, 2006 10:14 pm
I was thinking whether the "canon" header for a category was a little confusing. As we had discussed it, my understanding is that we wanted stories that would be taking place during actual events that occurred during an episode. But I was thinking it might become confused for scenes that could reasonably occur at this point between Jim & Pam as we see them on the show. So should we maybe modify the label? Are we all on the same wavelength in terms of what it means?
- Morning Angel on July 12, 2006 11:01 pm
I took Canon to mean something that doesn't really change the events of the show as we know them. It would maybe include a fic about Jim's inner monologue during the Booze Cruise. But I'm not sure about events that "could reasonably occur." Would that go under the Missin Moments Category?
- shannanagin on July 12, 2006 11:10 pm
Yea I had a similar worry about this category last night, when i was re-categorising a couple fics that were in the gen cat. It was a perfect inner monologue from casino night, but then the last couple lines were a conclusion the author drew about what would happen next. I wasn't sure if that went from Canon to AU. Maybe the category should be called inner monologue or something, because that's the only kind of fic i can see happening in a canon sense, but if the author has drawn a different conclusion about what happens next, and with casino night, we just don't know what happens next, it slips into AU a bit.
- sicokitty on July 12, 2006 11:24 pm
Maybe it would be better to have an Inner Monologue category. It's seems like a lot of this fics in the Canon section walk a fine line between Missing Moments, Inner Monologue and Speculation. I don't know if maybe we should change it up a little?
- shannanagin on July 12, 2006 11:35 pm
Canon keeps confusing me. And, do Pam/Jim belong in general at all?

Oh, and also, how do we use the featured thing? Is that something that you decide, sicokitty? Is it like a "story of the week" or something?
- Pixel on July 12, 2006 11:44 pm
Also - can we have a section to put the responses to challenges as well? I'd like to see that as a category so that I can just click over and see specifically which stories came from challenges, even if they fit into other categories.
- Pixel on July 12, 2006 11:46 pm
Pixel - if you click on Challenges (at the top), then on a particular challenge listed, it'll show you the stories associated with that challenge.
- nomadshan on July 12, 2006 11:50 pm
I tried that. It doesn't work for me. It says I'm not allowed to access that.
- Pixel on July 12, 2006 11:54 pm
I'd encourage everyone to keep thinking of the categories as the "when" and let the genres answer the "what" (like inner monologues). Of course the Other Pairings category doesn't follow the "when" rule, but I think that was so that those story could be separated early.
- nomadshan on July 12, 2006 11:54 pm
See though, it doesn't for me. When I click on a challenge name, it says that I'm not allowed to access this function so I can't see what stories were published in response. Don't know if I'm the only one with this problem.
- Morning Angel on July 12, 2006 11:55 pm
That's weird. Even if I log out, and click on it, it brings up the three challenges issued so far. When I clicked on Confined Spaces, it brought up three fics.
- nomadshan on July 12, 2006 11:57 pm
I see your point, nomadshan, but the problem is that if we want to make it as easy as possible for authors to classify their stories (and don't want to create more work for ourselves!), we might need to rethink that category because I have a feeling we'll end up with a lot of stories in canon that don't really belong there.
- Morning Angel on July 12, 2006 11:57 pm
Or we could just make it General Jim/Pam...just in case there are other canon genres that i haven't thought of. Or do away with the category all together. The inner monologues really could be considered a missing moment almost, because even though we see the scene, what goes on in the characters heads is news to us. Then we could probably add in Other Pairings- Canon. That might work. I would have to re read everything in canon first though, to see where else they would fit.

If the story is Pam/Jim romantic, then no, it shouldn't go in general, it should go in the appropriate Pam/Jim category. General is more focused at ensemble fics. The featured thing can be activated by any of the admins if they wish to feature the story, but for whatever reason, the featured block is not working on this skin at the moment, so we'll have to leave that for now until I get it fixed. And yea, i'd like to see it work as a story of the week kind of thing. Re the challenges, what nomadshan said. I thought about giving them a cat too, but then realised they're all nicely sorted already under the challenges tab. So long as the author remembers to respond to the challenge, and not add it like a regular submission, that should work fine as it is.
- sicokitty on July 12, 2006 11:58 pm
That is weird about the challenges. I can access them fine, even logged out.
- sicokitty on July 13, 2006 12:01 am
I'm not authorized either. :(
- xoxoxo on July 13, 2006 12:03 am
I can access it when I'm logged out, but not when I'm logged in. So bizarre.
- Morning Angel on July 13, 2006 12:08 am
ok try again for me.
- sicokitty on July 13, 2006 12:09 am
Logged out? Works fine. Logged in? NOPE.
