OK - those last 2 lines killed me. Such a beautifully sad story and then those 2 heartbreaking lines.
Author's Response: Thanks. I was hesitant to use it, but I think it works. I guess you could say it was a cruel way for her to depart, but that's how it ends.

Wow. So sad, and yet so very accurate to how life can be sometimes.
I LOVED this statement:
"The closure they both wanted -- no, needed -- is striking in its finality. It’s almost unreal. But their time passed them by."
Haven't we all felt that before...whew.
Really nice job with this, so simple, so sad, and yet so true in its message.
