I enjoyed this enormously. So beautifully written (I adore Jane Austen), interesting plot, and the characters were absolutely recognizable. Regency Jam kicks butt.

I loved this so much! Their love is so patient and you wrote this so beautifully! 🖤
Author's Response: Thank you so much, Saturn! I'm glad you liked it :)

I like the resolution with Jim's parents - they're not so much fully on board as they're just sort of accepting they can't help it and minimizing the damage. And the twist that their marriage ends up being what gets Michael and Holly together is clever (along with having some nice echoes in canon). I'm VERY happy you've chosen to give Ryan the worst possible comeuppance - having to rely on Kelly.
Nice work with this!

Ah! A quite nice way to wrap it all up - I love the touch of circling back to their first meeting. And so it all comes down to a classic case of missed messages and miscommunication, cleared up at last and allowing our darlings to move forward! Nice.
Author's Response: Thank you! I like it when stories finish the way they started, and I'm glad you like it too!

I love the way you've handled the Jan-Ryan conflict bursting out into the open (and that she ends up with Hunter), and the overheard conversation between Holly and Pam seems very genre-appropriate. Also nice to see Jim looking out for Holly here!
Author's Response: Thank you! I was worried a little about keeping this conflict and resolution realistic, and I'm glad that it worked for you!

I kinda love that a not particularly nice prank leads to both Angela and Dwight getting married and Pam and Jim getting a little bit closer to confronting what's between them.
Author's Response: Thank you! I didn't like this evolved, mean Jim either, so I decided to punish him that way :)
Date: October 07, 2020 04:24 pm Title: Chapter 11
I like Kelly taking on this poor servant girl as a project - makes her a likable character and it's a good twist on her canon emphasis on making over Pam. Still very suspicious of what Ryan and she are up to. (Although I feel like you're dropping hints that he's worried about what Jan might be doing with HIS inheritance.)
This was not where I expected to see the Beach Games speech come in! Although obviously in this AU this seems like a far more appropriate way for Pam to communicate some with Jim. (Really, though, again - an Austen novel AU just fits so well with their canonical communication issues.)
Hmmmm. Grace note at the end or not, I'm still not sold on new Jim. I don't quite know what to make of this Karen yet... she's snobby for sure, but I'm waiting to see some sign of how she really feels about Jim (and if she knows about Pam).
Author's Response: Thank you! Perhaps, that is what I like in Austen novels the most — people couldn't say directly what they want or what they think about but used some kind of code language for communication. Not that effective as a direct speech, but so much elegant...

I don't know what Ryan's up to, but I don't like it.
Lot of different pieces being moved around here - maybe Pam/Toby? Maybe a confrontation between Pam and the harder, darker Jim? Is there perhaps some money that's supposed to have flown Pam's way that Ryan's trying to get his hands on? You've managed to keep a lot of plot points well juggled here.
Author's Response: Thank you! I'm glad that I was able to keep an intrigue!
Date: October 07, 2020 03:30 pm Title: Chapter 9
I like this chapter a lot - Holly's observations on the idle rich are entertaining and her commentary gives her a good roll to play, and you've also done well to give Pam a scene between Jim and Karen to witness that fairly causes her pain while letting the reader know that Jim is a ways away from truly letting her go.
Author's Response: Thank you! I like the idea of Pam having female friends a lot — and I guess I wanted to make her a little less lonely and sad here. And I enjoyed adding a scene of Toby arriving and revealing Pam's name...

I've often thought that we really should've gotten more of a taste of the Michael-Jan relationship in canon. You have convinced me otherwise. Poor Michael! Although really, in this case, I feel like the Lady Levinson has more of an excuse - it's not like she can strike out on her own as an independent woman. I am pleased that you're bringing Holly into this - holds out some hope for Michael after all.
Oh, poor Pam. Dark days ahead before the light, I'm afraid.
Author's Response: Sadly, but even a title wouldn't give a woman independence, so, I guess, Lady Levinson just tried to keep the level of comfort she'd accustomed to (but yes, her methods are questionable).

It's interesting - the break in communication between Pam and Jim becomes a lot easier to fathom in this AU. Flip side: Pam goes through even more and pain and loneliness without Jim, and without even the idea that she's finally moving forward in other areas of her life as comfort. Poor Pam.
Author's Response:
To be honest, I still don't get why Pam and Jim in canon didn't find a way to communicate during that summer. And I'm still mad about that.
And placing them in the Regency era with its strict rules about writing letters justified that miscommunication a little.

You've done a really good job using Office canon to explore sexual and class divides and social expectations in a way the show often avoids diving into. Also: OUCH. COME BACK MR. HALPERT.
(Also, it's totally Dwight and Angela who Meredith saw.)
Author's Response: I can confirm now that Meredith saw them indeed!
Date: October 07, 2020 02:54 pm Title: Chapter 5
Ah, you made Austen-era Dundies! Cute! Meredith as the innkeeper is inspired, as is the "Chi"valrous "Li"on and bringing in dancing as a theme. I just find this version of Jim and Pam very harming.
Author's Response: Yay! I'm glad you liked it and that you spotted the Chili's joke :)

I really like the ways you've found to have Jim and Pam pranking Dwight and Michael, and the different route he's taken to being supportive of her art - plus, the fact that this support actually brings her closer to marrying Roy is solid, organic conflict creation.
(That book actually sounds very much up show-Dwight's alley - although he'd definitely get in trouble when Angela found and tried to read it, assuming it was a religious novel.)
Author's Response: Thank you! But I hope Dwight wouldn't have many troubles with that book — judging by the prejudice against Catholics in that time England, Angela (if she tried to read it) would just confirm her worst suspicions against them.

This is a fun use of Dwight, and the class element in Pam's story is a really interesting twist on canon.
Date: October 07, 2020 02:36 pm Title: Chapter 2
Michael as a buffoonish but benevolent lord of the manor and Pam as his long suffering housekeeper really works for me. And I like seeing Pam-Jim banter rendered in Austen-era language. (The note about Philadelphia was a nice touch!)
Author's Response: Thank you! It was fun to search for as many common things between 'The Office' and the Austen universe, and I was excited to learn about Aunt Philadelphia and add this joke :)
Date: October 07, 2020 02:28 pm Title: Chapter 1
Interested to see where you go with this - feels like some good choices being made here, with Pam's fundamental loneliness and passivity being recreated by the mores of the society she lives in.

Dernhelm, this story, like all your writing, is wonderful! I felt so lucky that I got to be the first to read it.
You blended Jane Austen and The Office seamlessly throughout this story. This epilogue was also a perfect nod to Austen - I loved Jim’s parents and their response to Pam’s lack of fortune. So very typical. The line about having other more ambitious children was perfect.
It was also wonderful how Ryan’s plan backfired and Michael found happiness with Holly.
I’m so sad to have this story end, but you wrapped it up so well!
Thank you for writing this! I wish I still had jellybeans to give!

Well that was lovely as ever. I'm glad you made this, and that you saw it through. How delightful (and 300 pounds; how rich the Beeslys truly are). A catch indeed, and a great story.

A sweet ending for a sweet story--I'm late to the party, but I had such a blast reading this perfect merging of Regency and Jam. Thanks for an amazing story!

I've somehow missed all of your updates on this wonderful story, but finished reading it today a
You did such a great job wrapping up each conflict and incorporating the words and attitudes of the characters.
I have to say that the letter scene and Mr. Halpert riding back to meet with Pamela was my favorite part of all.
You had a lot going on in this story (The Office, Persuasion, P&P and your own original content) and it was wonderful!
Thanks for writing!

Interesting take on Jim's parents. Usually they're seen as very pro-Pam. Granted it's a different time and place here but it's a unique kind of change. Love that Jim and Pam just don't care about anything and go ahead with a short engagement and wedding After all the time apart it's a great contrast that's a joy to envision.
Nice to get wrap-ups on all the other characters as well. Lots of tied off ends and all that.
Lovely writing throughout this story It's been a lot of fun to picture the familiar characters in this time and place. Well done.
