OH MY GOD THIS HURT. Pam sitting there, watching those painful 27 seconds hurt ME as much as it probably hurt her! Ouch!!

I love that Randall knew their codeword and revealed himself to Pam! I’m happy he’s on their side and not…you know… 😂

Roy! A cheater! I am SHOCKED to my core!

"Recollections of times Roy made her feel small and insignificant lined her mind like sharp-edged formations of angry violets, shocking indigos and gangrene olive hues, whereas thoughts of fun times with Jim seemed just as vivid but more like splashes of paint that in their haphazardness screamed of the playfulness and optimism he seemed to always have for her."

Have I mentioned how much I adore all this Pam-as-an-artist imagery? Because I do.

"Every relationship had them and it was only because she was not in a romantic one with Jim that his colors seemed brighter, that the abstracts she associated with him had fewer of those harsh edges."

Oh yikes. This actually made me think of s9 and now I have a sad.

Loved that we got to see the source of the paintings at her art show! Interesting to note, does this affect season 3 though? Will Michael put the painting up? How much of this is actually undone/ undoes what happens later? Ugh, time travel. ugh.

!!PINK PAMTHER!!

*Still, the slip that read I owe Pam Beesly for this absolutely stunning and awe-inspiring painting of art, was worth more to her than gold.*

I felt this deep in my soul as a writer. Words like this are all it takes.

Please, I beg of you, write a fic where Pam takes Michael to Michael's. Please.

Author's Response:

Sarcasm?

Well she is an artist - no matter what she calls herself.

I am so into time travel but even if it were possible I would never want to - there's too much risk - even the most tiny changes can majorly shift everything else. -as we see here.

YES- it's words like this and I thank you graciously for yours.

Michael at Michael's would be fun - maybe I'll put it up in plot bunnies. (can't tackle it myself)

“There were the rare instances where the ghost of an inner tiger would claw her way out to growl for her own desires, but even after the loudest roar, her stripes could still not change.”

This is a great sentence and really captures that struggle of someone not in a healthy and balanced relationship.

Oh, Pam. You just want to gently push her to get her to connect the dots! You are doing a great job of conveying that mental back and forth and making it extremely frustrating for the reader (which is definitely a good thing)

“The warehouse, he said was like an amusement park, especially without Darryl there to tell him what he could and couldn’t touch. Pam had to wonder what kind of messes her fianc? and the rest of the crew were finding when they got in each morning and how long it would take before they reported the curious break-ins where nothing was stolen but things were strangely out of place or, knowing Michael, potentially broken.”

This made me laugh. I can only imagine. Lol.

“And so back into the vault they went.” Uuuuugh Pam!

Author's Response:

Uuuugh Pam is right. Pam is so not in a healthy relationship. And I hope it is coming across that she slowly is seeing it but still fighting it internally because not only would that would mean having to change, but also risking everything she "invested" in for so long.

I really appreciate the reviews. ALways loving hearing from you so thanks.

"Or could it be more than that?"

Nice.

I still feel there is a breadcrumb trail of hints you are leaving us by spending time on each of these scenes and I can't wait to see where you take us with them. In this chapter, there are even more clues: the doctor's appointment, the white couch, the artwork, and her shift from impressionism. It may be only me and you may have no intention of doing that but it is fun to try and predict.

I'm curious to see if Michael has been behaving himself!

Author's Response:

Oh there are a ton of breadcrumbs, Gretel.

It will be a while, but all will be explained. Meanwhile I hope fun the speculation is fun.

Thanks for all the reviews.

“It was a look she knew was familiar, a facial quality she’d seen on someone else, somewhere else, quite recently in fact, only she couldn’t place whose face it was that she’d seen that same glow of love, probably on television, the character or show, she couldn’t think of in the moment, especially with her time jump still messing with her memories.”

Love this!

I really appreciate this pattern developing of hints and things to notice later that will pay off: book/library, song/music, etc. I can also tell you have done some research with this one.

Great job!

Author's Response:

Lots of pay-offs to come here - circularity is one of the devices (not sure if it is a device or structure or what) I love to utilize, and as you know, read in other fics - so I'm tickled you are noticing.

Also yes, this one took some googling. And I listened to a lot of Elvis during this time.

“If she were honest, most of the time the new knowledge filled her with an overwhelming happiness, a reassurance the bond she shared with him was not one-sided, and a stirring in her body as she more than once woke up in the middle of the night having dreamt about kissing him on the boat, by his desk at the office, and in the bed she sat on when she discovered his yearbook at the party he threw some weeks back before the holidays.”

Yessss. Her inner dialogue her was fabulous.

“But this woman, he could swear it was Pam, sensed it when that almost electric stirring he felt whenever she was near began to buzz through his body.”

This was so good and this close call was *chef’s kiss* perfect.

Great chapter!

Author's Response:

Funny, this chapter had been a filler chapter in the first draft and through a whole bunch of rewrites and layering it grew to be one that had a lot of important pieces and one I was proud of.

That you appreciated the inner dialogue and this close call made me even prouder. Thanks for the validating review. Always love to hear your thoughts.

I think one of my favorite things about this story is the close calls. Super clever using Dwight’s concussion for one in this chapter. You also did a great job at writing what that day might seem like inside a concussed Dwight’s mind.

You also use these fabulous little Freudian slips of thinking about Jim instead of Roy. That is such a spot on interpretation of season 2 Pam especially the one at the end about her missing Jim. Oh, Pam…

Author's Response:

The near misses are fun - as are the ways things done while traveling in time - will shift the original timeline. Time travel stories are fascinating in this way - so glad you are enjoying these elements.

Goddammit, Pam.

I really liked what you did with the earrings, making them a sort of metaphor for her relationship with Roy, losing one then finding it again, because it's true... leading right up to the wedding was probably when she was pretty happy with him for the most part. Worst timing possible for Jim.

*But now, what she'd tasted again over the last few days was not sitting right in her system. Even just the little nibble of doing things she loved was an overindulgence she couldn't digest properly after years of being starved.*

Ooh, this is lovely.

*When seven days earlier, what she heard made her weak and dizzy and unable to focus, after she regained her equilibrium, she found herself flattered, validated, and for the fraction of the second she allowed herself to feel so, happier than she’d been in a while, perhaps even more than both times she lived through Roy choosing a date for her to be married.*

This is spot on what she felt, and then hearing him say he was over it probably just crushed her, ugh

*"Michael, this trip was more than enough travel for us this year. And I'm already using all my vacation days with going away next week and then my wedding and honeymoon."*

Okay this has always bugged me because Pam says she used up all her vacation days in January (but never specified she was saving any for the honeymoon!) I guess we are to assume she was including those? I like how you addressed it here, though.

Great chapter, even though we all want to shake Pam.

Author's Response:

Right - wake up damnit.

But I'm glad you agree - And I feel like Pam is a big sign person - and she would read much more into finding it than there was - and not see the forest for the trees there too.

You and I think alike in so many ways - yeah the vacation day thing was kinda like 'huh' to me too? But figure this was a quick trip and the honeymoon would have had to have been short...more to come with that (and I almost gave away a future plot point so I'm going to close out this thank you before I say too much).

Tons of introspection here for sure. Thing is, she still has about another week. Yes it seems like she's taken a huge step back from where she had gotten to in regards to her thoughts of Jim and Roy. Finding the long lost earring would seem like the natural cause of that. But I'm also still not counting her all the way out. Even if it was only brief, she did let her thoughts and feelings about Jim out of that vault and methinks it's not going to be so easy to shut them away again. Even if she is trying to what with the return of the earring. Roy never noticed she stopped wearing them. Jim at least noticed the change losing them inspired and she remembered that too. Jim remembers the small things. Roy doesn't. After a week of thinking about that I don't think it'll be easy to just shut that all down.

This also feels like we're at another crossroads. She's heading back to her home, but she'll again be by herself. What will she make of her space with all these new thoughts and feelings she's been having? Really curious to find out that's for sure. It may be S2 Pam who has yet to grow the courage she has near the end of S3, but S2 Pam still did have some fire to her from time to time. Telling Roy off the night of the Dundies. Not leaving with Roy when they were reading Michael's screenplay. Correcting Roy that they're not dating, she's his fianc?. Now there's caveats to all those examples of course. Point is she's had moments of courage before. She's just spent a week deep in thought and building more courage. Could be this new crossroads she's poised at could end up being the road less taken and thus makes all the difference.

Author's Response:

I'm always so excited to see what you've got for me in the reviews and you always have a great/spot on take on things.

Yes, I hope it came across that she stood up for herself sometimes but knew to pick her battles - for the sake of not always fighting- but yeah, I agree she does have it in her, it's just a matter of her learning how to let it out without it making a mess of her relationship - hmmm maybe that has a lot to do with the partner she'd chosen - but Pam needs to figure some stuff out too.

Anyway, I'm hoping you like where it's going.

Thanks always for the insightful read and review.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO(deep breath)OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Come ON, Pam!

On the other hand, I 100% buy this of her as a character. She's uncomfortable with change, so naturally she's looking for signs that things should stay the same, and interpreting what happens to her accordingly - even when she could easily interpret the same set of facts as demanding the need for change. And her recognition that some of the issue is her not standing up for herself and letting him make the decisions still feels like progress if you really want to see progress. It feels like you're making a case for the necessity of Pam's growth in Season 3 to allow them to move forward, that it has to more than just her running to Jim, that it has to be also her learning to trust herself. The line about how she couldn't or wouldn't leave Roy feels very telling.

"Even just the little nibble of doing things she loved was an overindulgence she couldn't digest properly after years of being starved." Good line, but also, oh, Pam...

Feels sad that we're losing out on some of these moments in canon... certainly the ice skating's going to be a different feel for Pam now after this moment. But then who knows how things will be by Michael's birthday?

How did I know there was going to be a real Sandals Grenada?

"Between the kitchen, the ladies’ room that became his temporary bedroom, the warehouse playground and the means to wash up, he had all the luxuries of home, but with none of the rules set upon him when he was a guest in someone else’s place." PLEASE tell me we're going to get to see the aftermath of one of Michael's nights at the office at some point.

Also, I'd like to see the Jim-as-proto-Elvis/Michael as the Colonel AU now. And also a Michael staying with Pam AU, which feels like a full story on its own.

Author's Response:

Yeah, that was my reaction too as I wrote it, but that's what I saw as her response to finding that, plus it was good for the story.

Hmm growth, are you on to something?

Because it's me  - plus I wanted to be bombarded with ads for Sandals all over my social media.

Well let's just say we can't leave this story without some scenes at Dunder Mifflin.

Yeah, those could be fun...but I was picturing the pompadour like hairstyle Jim sports in later seasons when he finally discovers a comb. Could that be what Pam was drawing? when he starts using a bit of product and gets that lift to the front.

But an Elvis-inspired rejected cold open - I'd like to see that!

As always thank you for the animated and in depth review.

Feels like a good continuation of some of the other thoughts Pam has had going on. At least she's able to admit to herself that there is more than one man in her life now. She still seems to be clinging onto the life she thinks she wants with Roy, but more and more the thought of Jim is becoming stronger.

"But if it's no longer what you want, why would you keep it?" Loved that Pam is the one to pose that question and also Gabby's response. It seems like just the kind of reply one gives in order to help someone further along their journey of figuring things out for themselves. Try to beat someone over the head with the truth and you run the risk of them putting up shields and denying everything. Guide them to finding out the truth for themself and they'll be more likely to accept it.

Also I'll be you had a ton of fun going back to research some of your old NYC haunts. I really got the feeling that it's so detailed due to the fact you've been there which adds a great element to this section.

Author's Response:

yes, I loved writing the city section as I felt like I was there again, and have taken that same route up Madison to come back down 5th. Rode many an elevator up to a doctor or office and to my home everyday and its always a little awkward in the small shared space.

Small indulgence of this chapter but got some things accomplished too which you seem to have noticed.

Remind me to tell you a funny story about St. Patrick's sometime. But I love that Pam is in full on "Jim is Kevin Bacon" mode.

"The cost of New York parking was more per hour than what she'd paid for the entire outfit she had on" - is it a critique of New York? Or of Pam? But I'm glad she's at least acknowledging that there always seems to be plenty of money for the things that *Roy* wants.

Hmmmm. Paying some attention to the couple that got between them in the elevator. Maybe they're just rude... but it *is* a time travel story, and that is an odd moment...

I *feel* the awkwardness of having drifted off and coming back in to realize you've missed something important. I'm with you, Pam.

The sense that Pam is mainly nice to Angela because she doesn't like the idea of anyone disliking her is a good connection. As are the many things pulling on her here.

Love a little growth moment from Pam to close this one out.

Ah, well. Probably better for your privacy anyways to confuse the alogorithim.

Author's Response:

Do tell! Always enjoy a good story.

As for the cost of parking, well Pam is wearing mostly clothes from her go-bag but.... the line was part hyperbole and part error on my part (the way it reads her whole outfit would have to cost about $25 and so I edited the line - thanks for bringing it to my attention). But yeah, the point is Pam is cost-conscious while saving for a wedding and Roy spends like he's Rockefeller but only on things that he wants.

Pam seems to be getting closer to seeing things more clearly, doesn't she? But she's still teetering. And who knows what lies ahead to set her one way or another. Stay tuned.

Thanks as always.

Love the way you tied in St. James with her thoughts about another James...

*Pam knew how uncomfortable it made her when she thought someone didn’t like her. It was why she continued to be nice to Angela, not because she cared so much to have her as a friend but because she needed Angela to not dislike her, even if Pam didn’t even like her and hated feeling judged by her condescending looks and snarky comments.*

This is a good read on Pam's attitude towards Angela.

*Who knew the Jets and Sharks were not just athletic teams*

I enjoy this mention because the fact that Jim knows a West Side Story reference is such an odd detail, nice to see it included.

Pam's introspection is really interesting, I also believe she was more aware of her own feelings for Jim than she let on to anyone (sometimes including herself) so getting to see her thought process here feels really on point, the way she might weigh it all in her mind. Also, love that you're leaning heavily into the gambling references i.e. CN... people are so focused on the risk Jim took they don't tend to think about what a gamble it would be for Pam as well.

*Or could it be more than that?*

We see you. ;)

Pam having a bit of an epiphany about Roy and the white couch is surprising, I'm truly curious as to where exactly her newfound revelations will lead her (in a way that stays canon compliant!)

I get what you're doing with her deciding not to go see the impressionist paintings but I have to admit it sort of broke my heart a little.

Still enjoying the heck out of this tale but I'm eager to get to that climax!

Author's Response:

I loved the scene where Jim's snapping behind Michael during the fight - and love that you got the little nod to it.

Not sure she quite consciously equated the white couch and Roy - but glad you did.

“…and murmured something Pam couldn’t quite make out but sounded a bit like didn’t happen yet Gabrielle.” This line though has me SO intrigued!!!! Looking forward to the next chapter and hopefully finding out more!!!

Ok so there are so many things to think about here. More and more I'm getting the sense that Gabby is something like Pam's guardian angel. It seems to all be lining up perfectly. A motherly kind of tone that's easy to talk to. Being able to talk right to the heart of some of Pam's internal struggles. And that whispered line of "it didn't happen yet." Clearly there's something more than meets the eye.

This felt like a bit more of a push in how Pam's thoughts are going. The choice of song lyrics there at the start, Gabby quoting Pam's lines of beauty in ordinary things. Also interesting to see how Pam remembers meeting Roy vs. Jim. It seemed like with Roy she just kind of agreed to go out with him because he asked, not because there was any real attraction to him. High school Roy may have been nice, but I don't get the sense high school Pam was crushing on him, hoping he would notice her and ask her out or anything like that. With Jim though, it's clear she felt the instant spark she's so often heard about. Likewise in her reflections about what she and Roy have in common she has to stretch for something and when she does verbalize it, it's still spun a bit. Pam, think about that! The guy you're about to marry and you don't even really do anything together. Also it's usually stuff he likes. Not anything you like.

In the meantime there's Jim who does share common interest, takes the time to notice you, makes you smile and laugh and be seen.

Then of course the way Gabby describes her break-up with Charlie and getting together with Randall. How many more signs do you really need Pam? Like I said, it felt like a bigger push in this chapter and it should be really interesting to see where it goes.

Also I think there may also be something with Future Pam grabbing those pencils. Remains to be seen for sure. It feels like things are starting to ramp up a bit too. Can't wait to see where we go.

Author's Response:

Thank you for your review. It was fun to go back in the decades for the songs - the 70s are rich with Jam tunes.

Without saying too much (I know I will read other reviews others might too and want to keep things under wraps for them and keep you on your toes slightly also) bigger pushes now and ahead, lots of symbolism, double-meaning lines, shifted events and also red herrings. But with over a week to go before the reunification date I've got to fill it with something.

Many thanks again friend!
