Yay for links and pictures (and maps!) - you are a writer after my own heart!!

Still going great, Susan - can't wait for the date!!

Author's Response: Thanks, Moxie!  Credit where it's due, I've always enjoyed the extras you include in your stories and I was, of course, inspired by your wonderful example.  You're the best!  :-)

Oh, God - you know I was pretty certain I was getting sick of seeing post-Job fics everywhere, but this - I love this. Perfect characterisation, especially Jim's thought process - he was tired of waiting was brilliant, because that's exactly the reason Jim went back to Pam immediately - there's about four, five years of pining between them? And that's more than enough. I love it.

And also, that map? The most amazing thing ever. Heart-shaped Pam saying I want you here just got me a little more in love with Beesly - and I'm pretty full of love [TWSS] already. I adored the drawing, too. :P

OK, I have to read this again. Can't wait for an update!

Author's Response: Thank you so much for your awesome review!   I'm so glad that you're enjoying the story. I've really had a blast writing it.  Yay for Pam Beesly love!  She's the best. :-)

Thanks again for your great review. I sincerely appreciate it. :-)

Excellent! I cannot wait for more.

He looked in the mirror again. Bullshit. He was done waiting.

That line really struck me, because it's true. He's done, he's through waiting, and I think that confused a few people in the finale. Why would he go straight from Karen to Pam? Well, he realized Karen was totally wrong, and Pam was the only thing that was ever right. He'd wasted enough time being without her, and he isn't going to waste anymore. So it's really awesome how you nailed that logic in three sentences. :)

Author's Response:

Thank you so much for that kind review.  When I was writing this part I was thinking about the scene in "When Harry Met Sally" when Harry says, "...when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible."  Jim just can't help himself.

Thanks for reading!

Love the story so far.  I like the inner monologues and theinteractions between the characters!  I don't know how I missed Jim's "smile" post-it for so long, so thanks for that little factoid and the map was very cute...very Pam

 Hope to read more soon!

Author's Response: Thank you so much for your kind review.  Jim's smile sticky note broke my heart when I first saw GWH. You think Jim has moved on and then, guh.  That sticky note.  Such an awesome detail and insight into Jim's state of mind back then.

Thanks for reading!

Oh my god. Do you even know how happy reading about Pam's map made me? Much less seeing that you'd drawn it out complete with Jim and Pam stick figures!!

I'm loving the story so far! Can't wait for the next update!

Author's Response:

Thank you, I'm so glad that you enjoyed the map!  I'm glad that it was something Pam drew fast because I can't manage more than stick figures. :-)

Thanks for reading!

Great story. I really liked the conversation between Karen and Jim. I like Karen and I do think deep down she knows the feelings Jim has for Pam. I think it was a very realistic conversation between them.

Author's Response: I like Karen too.  I think she was in a very tough spot because Jim (to my knowledge) was never completely honest with her. This was just my way of working it out in my head.  I hope next season that Karen gets the send off she deserves.

Thanks for reading!

Squee!  That detail with the map was great.  I really like how colloquially (sp?) you write; and that you have Jim recognize his internal monologue.

Author's Response: Aw, secondrink! Squee back at you. :-)  Thanks for your thoughtful review.  My own little fanwank on Jim (TWSS) is that when he's making those adorable Jim-faces, his mind is working overtime.  Thanks for reading!

Ok, seriously I've been reading fics at this site for ages and I just registered today just so I could comment on THIS story. I love the dialouge between the two-- it's very natural and I can NOT get enough first date fics, but the thing that really got me were your end notes. The map to Pam's drawing was TOO CUTE (read: AMAZING) and added just the perfect touch of personality to the story. More please! :)

Author's Response: CallofDuty! That is such an incredible compliment - thank YOU so much for reading, and commenting. I sincerely appreciate it.   I hope you enjoy the rest of the story.

I'm really enjoying this story so far: the voices ring perfectly true, and it all feels very real. And I loved the map to Pam's apartment!

Author's Response: Thank you Inanna3!  I'm so glad you're enjoying the story. (and the map!) :-)

I really liked that this seemed to be a mature version of the breakup.  No screaming and yelling or 'you bastard' thrown in there.  It just seemed like they both knew it was inevitable.  Good job.

Author's Response: Thank you!  That is exactly the feeling I was going for in the break up.  Not too much drama, just finally facing the facts.

Thank you for reading!

Good job! Your characterization is good, and I think Karen would react pretty much that way. (She was pretty matter-of-fact in mine, too. lol) I can't wait to see more, now that you've gotten the beginner's nerves out of the way. I can't wait for Jim to get back to Scranton and Pam. :)

Author's Response: Thank you so much for your kind comments.  I had been avoiding reading first date fic because I didn't want my story to be overly influenced by everyone else's stories.  Now that the majority of this story is written, I'm looking forward to reading through what I missed.  Yours is first on my list!

Thanks for reading!

Fantastic.  I like to think this is how Jim would have handled the breakup with Karen.

Pam was his home.  With Karen he was just a tourist.  This paragraph was very well written, explains the difference in the two relationships perfectly.

Eagerly anticipating more of your story.

Author's Response: Thank you so much!  You response is exactly how I'd hoped that paragraph would come across.  :-)

This is really well written.  You have written Karen very well, giving her perhaps more depth than GD has (yet).  I am really looking forward to the rest of this story.

Author's Response: Wow! Thank you for your kind comments, that is a huge compliment.  I have faith that in September we will see Karen get the send off that she deserves. *fingers crossed*

Thanks again -- you're awesome!

Wow!  First fic?  I'm impressed.  The pressure is on now because you know that all your subsequent stories have to be better than this one, right?  Of course I'm kidding, but I'm seriously looking forward to more chapters, and when this is done, more fics from you.  Thanks for posting.

Author's Response: Keds are you me? Hee! Because that is exactly what I was thinking. Readers have been incredible kind, but now the pressure is on, eh? :-)  I will do my best.

wow - I would not have guessed this was your first fic, Susan - good characterizations!  I can't wait until he gets back to Pam.  Post soon!

Author's Response: Oh, Moxie, thank you so much!  I am such a huge fan of your writing, you have no idea how much I appreciate your encouragement.  How'd you get to be so awesome? :-)

Jim is hurrying home. He'll be there as soon as my beta gets back from vacation. ;)

Wow, this was an awesome first fic chapter!  Actually, it was an awesome chapter, period. I liked your version of the breakup - no theatrics or big surprises, more of a resigned "what is, is".  And I loved Karen's thoughts - "She knew from the moment she cornered Pam in the lunchroom that her time with Jim was limited. She understood that Jim was a gift she couldn't keep because he was never completely hers to begin with."  I'm glad that you wrote it so Karen kept her dignity and that they were able to part so civilly. Can't wait to read more.

Author's Response: Thank you so much for your kind comments!  It seemed to me that Karen put the bulk of her work into her relationship with Jim at the beginning. You know that whole five nights of talking thing. I think she's suspected for a while that things were not great, and that she was just coasting along, so I didn't feel like Jim's decision was a huge surprise to her.  After her weekend in NYC, and seeing that she did have a life outside of Scranton, I think Karen would have ended things with Jim anyway.

Thanks for reading!

First fic or 50th - this is really good. Love Karen's portrayal - how she's disappointed/hurt, yet quickly able to regroup and take care of herself. How she admits she's known it all along. (Cutting her losses was very apt and a good call back to the gambling metaphors they've used, beginning with CN.) Also, great sense of Jim's state of mind - this observation was perfect: He wasn't damaged. Just conflicted. This plays out almost exactly how I've imagined the end of their relationship.  Really nicely and cleanly written. Well done.

Author's Response: If I can just get the fangirl squee out of the way, I just have to say that I am a huge fan of your writing so I really appreciate your thoughtful critique.

Karen Filipelli is a fascinating character to me.  She is obviously a very bright, self-possessed person. That is, until she hits the Scranton city limits.  In The Job, I loved how she has a life in NYC that wasn't limited to following Jim around.

I hope the writers give Karen the send-off she deserves.

Thanks again for your comments!
