Okay, y'all got away with it this time. But I feel like you're still not taking the risk of antimatter storms seriously, PAM. JUST A HUNCH.

Jim having casually prepared Pam's coffee! Heart eyes.

I would actually love a side adventure of Jim’s efforts to make small talk with prairie dogs.

Hmmmmm. Tough call here. I think I'm going with the water moon on the grounds of it being very unlikely that life would develop in the same way in the same planet from the star as in our solar system. Too coincidental. Maybe here, the moon is the earth, abandoned after they flooded the world by melting the ice caps... (3)

‘There are Sbarros in Houston!’” LOL MICHAEL.

"You couldn't land me in a thousand years." LOL DWIGHT. Really, the entire concept of Dwight and Jim still being Dwight and Jim while they explore another planet in search of extraterrestrial life on camera is pretty fantastic.
“Professor for the exposition and then action hero for entire the rest of the movie because grading and writing papers doesn’t exist.” BOOM! ROASTED.

Love Jim and Pam's banter as they prepare for the New York meeting. And this scene in the hotel room is so sweet. It's cute that they're still so awkward around each other even after having conquered the far reaches of outer space together. (Pam's story about touching the art feels too real.)

And the conclusion is wonderful. Truly, love is the greatest of all the adventures we can have. (2)

This is a stunning set of images... this well-developed and totally abandoned alien city. Bizarre and eerie. I don't blame Pam and Jim for being freaked out by it.

Jim might trust Pam's judgment less if he knew her advice got EVERYBODY KILLED in another universe. But I'm glad he's being suspicious. This whole scenario is deeply unsettling.

Found myself wanting to know more about the time contraction here, and what possibilities it opens up.

Jim definitely proving his worth to the expedition in this chapter, although this seems a mite more challenging than PRAIRIE DOGS. This is actually a pretty sweet testimonial to the value of each member of the expedition in its way.

The idea that the aliens are trying to flee TO Earth, rather than invading, is a really fun twist you don't see much in sci fi. Strong choice.

Michael looks very concerned. “But they can’t stay in our houses, right? Because of the Third Amendment?” HA.

And a VERY sweet moment with Jim and Pam at the end. (2)

Well, I'm glad Pam is in good spirits about this. Especially since her idea would have KILLED US ALL.

Fascinating seeing this alien world for the first time, and contemplating first (or second) contact from the perspective of a UFO pilot rather than a planet dweller. One would have to be nervous about a species that seems so technologically advanced, especially not knowing what exactly they intended to communicate.

That being said, we're here to meet the aliens. So let's go meet some aliens. Adventure is out there! (2)

Hmmm. So. This was not a particularly successful first journey. I blame Pam. I *thought* she wasn't being careful enough about the antimatter.

I love that you're working in a thoughtful meditation about science and religion in here, just in time for them to do some firsthand research on life after death. And this death scene is actually really sweetly written, them embracing in their last moments. You've got a strong sense of how Jim and Pam might contemplate The End together. (1)

SPACE!Pranks! Funny, but kind of dangerous, guys.

The description from Jim on the observation deck is strong. Well written.

Pam seems very casual about antimatter in a way that makes me extremely nervous. On the other hand, she's adorable and Michael is a goofball. So on to Capron we go! (1)

I love the idea of Michael being about to engage in interstellar travel and still being fascinated by magic tricks, and Bud feeling the need to reassure Jim and Pam about his skills. He... does not necessarily seem like the kind of person you want to go on a long journey in an enclosed space with unless you have to.

“I take offense that you don’t trust me. After all, we just met thirty hours ago, and I am operating heavy machinery that I have never used before.” Oh, Jim, you charming bastard. And this is a clever callback to Jim’s driving lessons!

Not to put too fine a point on it, Jimbo - but you should really be exhibiting more curiosity about the antimatter storms considering how worried everyone is about them. *shrugs* and also time contraction. Feels like that might come up again. Just sayin".

The spinning of the ship to recreate Earth's gravity was a nice scientific detail, as was Jim taking the opportunity to screw with Dwight.

Lol at Pam's cosmology joke. I can just picture that conversation with Space!Kelly.

Hmmm. Going with Chapter Three on the first try because Jim may understand antimatter now but I don't, and it sounds dangerous.

TWO SEPARATE MTT STORIES with a U of C connection! It's a good year for the Maroons.

There's a lot of fun foundation laid here. I thought you did well making it clear why they'd bring Jim along in spite of his lack of space experience. Looking forward to seeing the mystery of the symbols play out.

The interspecies communication idea is fascinating - makes me want to take The Zoologist's Guide to the Galaxy off my to be read shelf....

Love this very distinctive intro of Michael and his dynamic with Dwight, and Jim’s instant attraction to Pam.

Tpb omg. First of all, “Not a bad flight.” Im gonna die. And then how freaking encouraging Jim has been of Pam and how much they love each other and THE HOT TUB SCENE. And then Pam getting a job offer from NASA. Theres too much for me to process but I loved every second of it.

This is incredibly impressive and so much fun to read. My first ending was the black hole and it was enormously comforting to be able to go right back and try again (and more importantly it is all so we'll written that I WANTED to keep going back to see how the story could be changed).

Aw! What a sweet ending. I can't believe I got a good ending on my first try! Loved all the little touches that called back to the show. I laughed out loud at the Sebring! Great job, this was a massive undertaking and I'm super impressed!

Author's Response: Ah thank you so much BT! The Sebring is one of my favorite parts, haha. I'm so happy you gave this a read!

They DIED??? They got sucked into a black hole and DIED?!? I didnt sign up for this. Wheres my refund??

For real though, as heartbreaking as this was, it was also so good. The uncertainty with Jim, the nervousness with Pam, the panic and acceptance at the end as they hug each other. Excuse me while I cry.

Author's Response: I'm sorry for killing them! Does it help if I tell you that this was easier for me to write than normal angst? No?

There's me thinking, "Oh yeah Cathers, you've definitely reviewed at least one chapter of this awesomeness"; but no, I had not. So rectifying this by saying that not only did I do EVERY PATH but I MAPPED EVERY PATH! On a piece of paper and everything (which you know as I sent you a pic in my scrawlly writing).

So this officially declares my undying love for this story. The fact that it's brilliant fun, and has much of the JAM loving are almost beside the point (although I did mark those endings on the mapping with hearts.)

This is a triumph.

Author's Response: I love how much you love this story, grc. It makes my heart soar with the eagle's nest. Truly, I'm amazed and honored that you mapped it all out!

*“Wow, those are amazing!” Michael says. “I always thought that if we encountered aliens, they would look like some sort of monster, like something with the body of a walrus with the head of a sea lion. Or something with the body of an egret with the head of a meerkat. Or just… the head of a monkey, with the antlers of a reindeer, with, ah… the body of a porcupine.”

“You done?” you ask him.*

Hahah extra points for working this in, wow

*Pam sits up straighter in her chair. “Um… I don’t know the answer to that, actually. I don’t know the biological components that would allow for that.” She looks at your, briefly out of the corner of her eye. “I’d have to ask an anthropologist.”

The reporter shrugs, undeterred. “Dr. Halpert?”

You look at Pam, whose face is straight ahead, eyes twinkling, lips pressed together as she tries not to laugh. “I don’t know,” you say, not taking your eyes off her. “Antimatter storms aren’t in my field of research. I’d have to ask a cosmologist.”*

OMG get a room, guys! Oh wait... THEY ARE

I want to be mad at you, but the way this ending is written is too good to be mad. I loved their conversation about God and the prank on Dwight too.

On to the next one! Hopefully involving less dying!
