This is amazing! It's so unpretentious. Like you're not always reaching for metaphors that aren't there, or elaborating on emotions so much that the dialogue disappears. But it's not too chatty either. I mean, so far it's a little dry, but like I said, I like that. It's not overwrought, and it shouldn't be, because the show is definitely not. And I'm sure that slightly less minimalistic things are just around the corner. Can't wait! As it is it's pretty close to perfect. Thanks for writing! :)

Author's Response: Thanks a lot for this review, because that's definitely what I'm going for in my writing.  Nothing turns me off more than a fic that tries to be too poetic and emotional.  I'm often afraid I overcompensate and end up with really boring stories where nothing really happens, but I hope at least it's a refreshing change from the usual stuff.  Which, don't get me wrong, can often be great in fics, but I agree with you that the show is not overwrought and I try to reflect that in my writing.  It's not always successful, but that is my goal!  Thanks again for the review :)

Summary: In science, the term "observer effect" refers to changes that the act of observing will make on the phenomenon being observed.

Dammit, I know how the Philadelphia Story ends and if this story is parallel to that story in every way then I better stop waiting with bated breath for the next installment because even with your writing as good as it is, I don't think I could take Ryan getting the girl in the end. That said, I'm a fan of everything else. Really high quality writing--not overwrought, which is pretty much the MO of fanfic, and I love overwrought angst sometimes but it's nice to read a story that seems a little more . . . adult I guess, or semi-pro. Maybe even real pro, who knows. I'm not a professional book reviewer or anything. Anyway, here's hoping Ryan's not going to get as lucky as CK Dexter Haven did. I know Cary Grant, and Ryan's no Cary Grant. Also, I love Jim, even though he's so far pretty one note in this. (I'm sure it's deliberate--that's not a criticism, by the way.) Oh, and one more thing--I like how you put the pedestal parallel in here. That was one of my favorite parts of TPS--the part about K. Hepburn being on a pedestal and how putting people on a pedestal is just another way of marginalizing them. Alright, sorry this is so rambling. I have really enjoyed your story so far and I'm hopeful that its end won't be as sad for Jim as it seems like it might be.

Author's Response: Thank you!

Summary: It all started with his mostly ignored birthday and a lesson on how to do the Shopping Cart. (Toby/Kelly).

That was awesome! I'm awestruck! Thanks for writing Kelly like a human, for once. She's more than the sum of her awesomes and totallys, and writers (probably because she's hardly ever the focus of stories) hardly ever get that. Your Kelly sounded more like Mindy sounds in the "things I bought that I love" blog. (Which makes her seem really real to me since the Kelly character is an exaggerated version of Mindy and arguably her shopping blog is an exaggerated version of that side of her too.)

Your Toby was also right on. Sadder and older and higher brow than Kelly but not mean or judgmental at all.

And I love that you showed how smug and snide Jim can occasionally be towards Kelly without making him so condescending that you can't stand him. Also the bar conversation definitely redeemed him.

I appreciated the way that you focused on dialogue and action without getting too caught up in overwrought inner monologue type stuff. The timeline flowed nicely and seemed natural too. I feel like there wasn't any excess here.

Anyway, it's clear that I really liked everything, I'll stop. Thanks for posting! More would be very welcome.

Author's Response: Wow. Thank you so, so much. I\'m so glad you enjoyed it. I love writing Toby and Kelly and am very happy that you think I was able to do Kelly justice. And I\'ll post the sequel within a week or so. It\'s even longer than this fic.

Summary:

A collection of moments in Jim and Pam's new life together. Because even though we rarely get to see it outside the office, it has to be amazing. (Even if there are some not-so-amazing times.)

General spoilers for S2-S5.

Amazing! Anytime an author finds a way to perfectly mix the angsty past and the mostly fluffy present it's...well, pretty perfect. Really interesting idea. I've never seen the card addressed like this. I hope there's lots more where this came from.

Also, I don't think anybody's mentioned this, but it's christen, not christian. For using things the first time. Unless I'm missing that that's some Jim/Pam in-joke, I think you meant christen (re: the bed). Anyway, kudos, that tiny typo didn't detract from the story at all, it was beautiful. And lately, maybe because of the minimal angst on the show, I haven't been moved by Office fanfic in a long time.

Author's Response: Oh wow, thank you so much corposant. Aaaand an even bigger thank you for pointing out that typo, it annoyed the grammar nazi in me to notice that as well.. but I'm glad it didn't deter from the story for you. And I really appreciate your kind words, so thanks again. :)
